    Community celebrates unity, honours indigenes at 38th festival

    Residents and indigenes of Imota, Lagos State, have celebrated this year’s 38th Imota Ayayo Day.

    Olufoworesetie ll, Ranodu of Imota, Oba Ajibade Agoro, led sons and daughters at the grand finale.

    Cultural groups displayed their dances to the delight of visitors and dignitaries, including monarchs in Lagos State.

    Among attractions this year were displays by stilt walkers, and the launch of Omidan Asa, with the theme: “Embracing the essence of beauty, strength and cultural heritage.”

    This event, with Miss Imota Ayayo beauty pageant, was an opportunity to honour women in the community. Miss Temitope Adams, who represented Ajagunro quarters, was crowned the first Miss Imota Ayayo, winning the star prize of N150,000.

     Traditional games like Ayo Olopon, draughts and Koto brought people together, reminding them of the need to preserve cultural pastimes.

    A lecture: “The struggle for youth participation in politics and community development – lesson from Nigeria democratic process, gave participants insight into how the community can empower youths to take on leadership roles and contribute to development of the community.

    Siyan Oyeweso, pro-chancellor and chair of Obafemi Awolowo University Governing Council, in his guest leture, said “there should be an industrial hub cluster for youths interested in transforming their lives through skill acquisition.”

    He called for infrastructural development and skill acquisition, among others, as a way of addressing unemployment.

    Dr Olumide Metilelu, associate professor of Tourism and Hospitality at Lagos State University of Science and Technology said  “the participation of the people in this event is a testament to the unifying force of the community, fostering unity, pride and an appreciation for the cultural tapestry woven by the people of Imota.”

    At the event, some persons were inducted into Imota hall of fame. Among them were Dr Oladega Adebogun, owner of Caleb University, Imota; Alhaji Olalekan Saka-Jinadu; Alhaji Olalekan Lasisi; Ademuyiwa Ogunnowo; Alhaji Abdullateef Shoderu.

    Fuji maestro, Sule Malaika thrilledthe audience with his old song.

    Dignitaries at the event include, Babajimi Benson; Ogunleye Adetokunbo, Wasiu Agoro; Sen Tokunbo Abiru, Aro Abiodun.
