Community Shield opens new football season on Gotv

The 2025/26 season officially starts tomorrow as Crystal Palace and Liverpool meet at Wembley for the FA Community Shield. The match will be aired live on GOtv at 3 PM.

Since 1974, Wembley Stadium has served as the traditional home of the Community Shield. While often perceived as a glorified friendly, the match provides a competitive stage to test summer signings and mark the start of new campaigns. Palace earned their place as FA Cup winners, while Liverpool are in it as Premier League champions.

Liverpool under Arne Slot, who has reshaped the squad over summer with key signings like Hugo Ekitike Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz, Though they lost stars such as Trent Alexander-Arnold and the late Diogo Jota, their revamped side looks to continue the momentum from last season’s title-winning form.

Crystal Palace, competing for the Shield for the first time, earned their debut through a remarkable FA Cup victory over Manchester City, the club’s first major trophy. Managed by Oliver Glasner, Palace have the opportunity to test their preparation for the new season.

While the Shield may not be the most prestigious trophy, it can signal intent. For Liverpool, it is an early statement of leadership and form. For Palace, it is a chance to continue their historic rise and seize momentum.

The Match kicks off at 3pm, tomorrow, 10 August, exclusively on GOtv SuperSport EPL.

What to know about Man City vs United Community Shield clash

The Community Shield clash between Manchester United and Manchester City today at 3 pm at the Wembley Stadium promises to be a thrilling showdown between two of English football’s fiercest rivals.

Both teams are fresh off memorable seasons, adding to the excitement of this highly anticipated Manchester derby.

Man City and Man United are set to face off at Wembley in the Community Shield, just 11 weeks after their FA Cup final clash.

    Head to Head

This marks the eighth occasion in Community Shield history where the match is a rematch of the previous season’s FA Cup final. Notable examples include fixtures such as Manchester United vs. Aston Villa in 1957, Manchester United vs. Liverpool in 1977, Everton vs. Manchester United in 1985, and Arsenal vs. Chelsea in 2017.

Interestingly, in the last eight Community Shield encounters between the league champions and the FA Cup winners, the FA Cup winners have emerged victorious seven times. The only exception was Manchester City’s 2-0 win over Chelsea in 2018. This trend could bode well for Erik ten Hag’s side, following their 2-1 victory over City in the FA Cup final in May.

Manchester City is making its fourth consecutive appearance in the Community Shield this year. However, they’ve not won any of the last three editions, having been defeated by Leicester City in 2021, Liverpool in 2022, and Arsenal in 2023. The only other team to have lost the Shield four times in a row is Manchester United, who experienced this from 1998 to 2001.

Manchester United, on the other hand, has a storied history in the competition, with 21 titles to their name, including shared victories. They’ve triumphed in their last four Community Shield appearances, with their most recent win coming in 2016 under José Mourinho.

This will be the third Community Shield meeting between the two Manchester clubs. United won both previous encounters, 1-0 in 1956 and 3-2 in 2011.

    Unavailable players

With the recent sale of Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid, Pep Guardiola provided an update on the availability of other key Manchester City players — Rodri, Phil Foden, Kyle Walker, and John Stones.

“We try to give them as much rest as possible,” Guardiola explained. “We would like more time, but it is what it is. The England players and Rodri will come back next week. What’s next? Training sessions, step by step, and rotation to keep the players fresh.”

    New signings debut?

With Yoro sidelined due to injury, Joshua Zirkzee will be looking to make his Manchester United debut at the national stadium, just three-and-a-half weeks after joining from Bologna.
