    Community laments abandoned road

The people of Isi-Uzo Local Government Area in Enugu State have cried out to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to complete the Ugwogo-Neke-Ikem Road started by the past administration of Sullivan Chime.

The road could not be completed by the previous administration and residents fear it might have been abandoned.

Residents of Ikem community, who spoke on the poor state of the road, also bemoaned the condition of the Ebenyi Bridge at Ikem-Uno, which they said has become a death trap.

They urged the new administration in the state to alleviate the suffering of motorists, the indigenes and other travellers on the road to connect neighbouring communities in Udenu Local Government Area, Benue and Ebonyi states.

A businessman at the local government headquarters, Ndubuisi Odo, lamented that his business across the Ebenyi River has since been paralysed as he finds it difficult crossing the dangerous bridge built by federal troops shortly after the end of the Civil War.

An auto panel beater at Ikem Junction across the river confessed that his business has been good since the bridge always wrecked vehicles, thus bringing their drivers to him for repairs.

A vulcanizer in the same location also told the same story of making brisk business from deflated tyres.

The traditional ruler of Ikem-Uno, Igwe Okechechukwu Ogbodo, while appreciating the effort of the past administration in constructing the road, pleaded with the new state administration to help complete the construction of the bridge and the remaining few meters of the road to join Nsukka-Nkalagu Road at Ukwumango.

The monarch disclosed that the hanging bridge was being maintained by community effort, especially by the late President General of the Ikem community, Greg Ugwueze, adding that since the demise of Ugwueze, condition of the bridge has worsened and became impassable.

Investigation from the state ministry of works indicated that the bridge was awarded at the cost of N350m to a contractor from Greyline Construction Company that constructed the 28km Ugwogo-Ikem road, yet the bridge remained uncompleted by the past administration.

It was also learnt that the contractor was not mobilized up to 20 percent of the contract sum, yet the contractor sourced for money to erect piles of the bridge with hope that the past administration would pay up before May 29 but that did not happen and the contractor was frustrated, hence the contractor’s withdrawal from site.

Another resident of Isi-Uzo LGA, Ugwu Ishingene from Neke, also lamented that even the tarred road from Ugwogo with shoulders and drains of the road have remained uncompleted and pleaded with the new administration of Ugwuanyi to come to the rescue of the Isi-Uzo communities affected by the predicament.

Monarch seeks ministerial slot for community

The Deji of Akure , Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladesulu has urged the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to make its “change” agenda be noticed in Akure, the Ondo State capital by appointing one of his subjects as a minister in its proposed cabinet.

The monarch spoke through the Asamo of Akure, High Chief Rotimi Olusanya when APC leaders in the state visited him in Akure.

Oba Aladesulu noted that the last time Akure community felt Federal Government’s presence in terms of political appointment was during the era of the Military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, when the Olu of Ilu-Abo, Chief Olu Falae was appointed as the Minister of Finance and Secretary to the Government of the Federation(SGF).

According to the traditional ruler, the people of Akure will support the government and ensure the sustenance of peace in the community.

The visit to his palace was led by the chairman of the state chairman of APC, Isaac Kekemeke with a promise that the party would support his reign for the development of Akure, the state capital.

He said the APC would work assiduously with Akure traditional council for the socio-economic development of the kingdom.

Kekemeke said: “Our leader, President Muhammadu Buhari is seen as a man of integrity by most world leaders. Now we want to change Nigeria, Ondo State and Akure and we know you too as a change agent.”

He described Oba Aladesulu as a man of integrity, stressing that APC members are for progress and development in all spheres of life.

His words: “Kabiyesi, we have many things in common to develop your domain. We know by next year, we will be working together because APC is forming the next government in Ondo State.

“We want to have a traditional rapport with the palace to have a common goal to develop Akure in particular and the entire state in general. Akure is vital to the development of the state.

“We have a great luck in having you as our monarch at a time we are preparing to take the mantle of leadership.”

Kekemeke called for peaceful co-existence among residents in Akure, saying “APC is committed to peace and progress of the ancient community.”

Another APC leader, Prince Olu Adegboro said the party was for transformation.

He lamented that Akure has been relegated to the background politically by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration in the state, promising the traditional ruler that the APC government would ensure that all glory of

    the ancient town is restored.

  • Traditional stool causes chaos in community

There is tension in Amanuke community in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State, with two groups struggling to install the town’s monarch.

Governor Willie Obiano had recognised Alphonsus Ezebilo and gave him a certificate and staff of office.

Addressing reporters yesterday in Awka, the President-General of the town, Mr. Paul Enemuo, said Ezebilo, an accountant, was nominated, screened and presented to the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, which also wrote the Department of State Service (DSS) for investigation.

These according to him, were done without any hitch until some persons offered the position to another person.

According to Enemuo, the DSS cleared Ezebilo, whose certificate of recognition has been signed by the governor.

His words: “The former monarch, Igwe W.O. Ezenwa, died in 2000 and the mourning period had since elapsed, hence the necessity for a new one.

“In compliance with the Constitution of Amanuke, we have painstakingly undertaken the exercise and the town endorsed Ozo Alphinsus Ezebilo as the Igwe–elect.

“The selection process started with a directive by the Central Executive Committee of the Amanuke Development Union on September 28, 2014, to Enuagu village, which is constitutionally entitled to produce the next Igwe, to present a qualified person.

“They presented Ozo Alphonsus Ezebilo and a chieftaincy committee was set up in compliance with Section 57 of our constitution. They screened and found him qualified in all respects”.

He described Dennis Ezebilo, a relation of Igwe Alphonsus Ezebilo, laying claim to the stool, as an impostor.

Another community leader, a former contender who withdrew from the race, Chikaodi Anara, said Dennis Ezebilo could not have been selected because his father is alive.

Anara said Dennis did not possess the minimum educational requirement for the throne, adding that every member of the Ezebilo family supported Alphonsus.

  • Community protest alleged military harassment

Leaders of Odimodi Community in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, have protested against alleged threat to the peace and security of the community and harassment of its 90 year old monarch by the leadership of the Nigeria Navy’s NNS Delta.

They accused the security agency of partisanship, meddling in the community’s internal affair and threatening the peace and security of the oil-producing Ijaw community.

The community’s displeasure was contained in a letter to the Commanding Officer, NNS Delta, Warri, Commodore Aliyu Sule, following the CO’s invitation to the nonagenarian clan head, Chief Yangaboy Angalabiri.

The letter, authored by Larry Ovwromoh & Associate, followed an invitation letter from the CO, threatening to take “action” against the monarch and leadership of the community, unless the monarch makes a long trip from Odimodi to appear before him in Warri and also allow a sacked leadership of the clan to remain in place.

Attempts to get the Navy’s reaction were abortive as the Base IO, Lt Tope Ogunaike, was unavailable. Commodore Sule was yet to return our reporter’s calls or respond to text message sent to his mobile phone since Friday.

  • Community counts its blessings

    Community counts its blessings

Once without any sign of growth, a community in Anambra State now boasts modern amenities. NWANOSIKE ONU reports on the transformation, which started barely seven
    years ago

There used to be little to celebrate in Nkerehi, a 120-year-old community in Anambra State nestling on its border with Abia. Its people had neither paved road nor healthy water nor electricity. The people quartered in Orumba South Local Government Area lived in the dark, if not in the past. There were, to be fair, only two noticeable industries: a stone quarry and traditional medicine.

That has changed. In 2008, they jettisoned their name, Nkerehi, and adopted another, Umuchukwu. The name-change was not without opposition. A few indigenes thought it wrong, almost a sacrilege, to throw away the name given by their forebears. Some youths took up arms, reportedly sponsored by some well-heeled folk. Shots were fired and a few lives were lost. The community’s traditional leader, Igwe Michael Ukaegbu was abducted but has since been released.

Things have changed. Over 70 respectable homes for widows have sprouted in the community. Anglican and Catholic worshippers also have decent auditoriums. There are computer-equipped schools, accommodation for civil defence personnel, a market, police station, post office, high court, a befitting palace for the king, even monasteries for those dedicated to Christian service. Umuchukwu also has two smooth road, built by former governor Peter Obi.

The community has Dr Godwin Maduka, a spine surgeon, to thanks for most of these facilities built by a foundation named after him.

Fifty-eight-year-old Johnson Ezeji said Dr Maduka, who lives abroad, is a godsend. “Only few [elements] in the community who are also abroad and do not come home, are against the progress this community is making through this our illustrious son,” he said.

“They opposed the change of name from Nkerehi to Umuchukwu; nobody knew whether it was that name that was impeding progress in this area, while the community became a laughingstock to other communities.”

“We are happy today because the name of the community was changed to Umuchukwu (God’s own land) to suit the revelation of God in the land; nobody knew the meaning of Nkerehi given to the place by our forefathers.”

Mr. Ikechukwu Omelazu, 48, a community leader, told The Nation that other communities are now yearning to have somebody like Maduka, adding that Umuchukwu has been blessed through him.

He urged the rich in the state to join forces and build their communities. “If the politicians…go to their communities to invest, Anambra State would soon be like Dubai.

At the burial of the community’s traditional Prime Minister, Chief Sylvanus Maduka, the Catholic Bishop of Awka, Most Rev Paulinus Ezeokafor urged Ndigbo to reduce their expenses at funerals and emulate people like Dr Maduka.

The burial of the late Prime Minister attracted the presence of former Governor Peter Obi, the state Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, his Deputy, Dr Nkem Okeke and Mr. Godwin Ezeemo, a philanthropist, among others.

Dr Maduka said, “I want to tell the people that this community is not cursed. I prayed God to give me the means to alleviate the sufferings of my people, and I thanked God He has given me small ammunition to fight poverty in this land.

“It was the desire to help the people at home after my education that made me to come up with a creative idea and I once more thank God again that it has started working in Anambra State.

“When I travelled out of the country, I vowed and prayed to God that I was going to fight poverty in the land. The first time I came home after many years, I cried because the people were looking sick. It was a town in decay without hope.”

    That is changing.

Parents lift community with household materials

Ajomo Community, Ketu, Lagos State bubbled with activities last week as   parents of the pupils of Explorer Montessori School, Opebi, donated many materials to the community. The parents, under the auspices Sow a Smile Charity Committee, donated educational, household materials, and food stuff to the children and parents of the community. They also gave health and educational counsels to them.

Chairman of the community, Chief Adesina Adekoya expressed his gratitude to the school’s act of kindness and called on other members of the society to assist them in their difficulties.

Dressed in their party attires, more than 80 children were lecturered on the dangers of smoking, alcoholism  and other health endangering habits as well as advised to complete their education diligently to fulfill their dreams.

One of the recipients, 10-year -old Kemute Obugara, who attends Idera school told The Nation about his excitement to have the received a school bag with educational materials inside it.

He said: “I am happy about this. Now I can change my old bag and use this one. I want more people from the society to do this for us, because it is not everybody that can afford the same things in life.”

Parents were not left out of the event as they received lectures on how to multiply their income and tame unruly children. They were also presented with mosquito nets, beverage and foodstuffs.

Mrs Rebecca Luka, was grateful and called on government to help the community by providing free education.

“It is not easy for us as ordinary traders to be feeding our children, sending them to school and take care of ourselves, so we would love the government to help us. We want government to at least give us free education. This act of kindness by this group has gone a long way to lift some of our worries. Now I can be sure my children are safe from mosquitoes with this mosquito net,” she said.

The community secretary, Mr Martins Donor, was happy and advised the members of the community to be cooperative and help one another.

Founder of the school, Yemi Salako, said: “Our aim is just to sow a seed that would bring a smile to the faces of children in our society. We encountered a whole lot of challenges. The major one was how to raise the funds. Up until three, four days ago, we were not even sure if we would have enough money. But in the last two days, we were overwhelmingly supported by parents and friends of the school.”

Some of the parents, Mrs Toyin Ogunsanya, Dr Nancy Umoren, Mrs Morayo Kolapo, Mrs Ifaturoti Oluwaronke spoke about their inspiration to be part of such an expedition: “If you have seen both lives, you would understand that wherever you are and whatever you are, thank God for it. It is not easy seeing people that have not even been able to eat in a day, not to talk of having two square meals. Just feeling a pinch of what they feel everyday would make you want to do more. We have been able to source for funds and God helped us make an impact on them. You do not need to save everyone, but if you are able to touch the life of just one person, that person can touch someone else and gradually, we would touch everyone.”

  • Community youth leader denies report

The Chairman of Oghareki youth in Oghara, Delta State, Mr. Favour Ededey, has dissociated himself from Niger Delta Report’s story on the  quarrel between the traditional ruler, HRM, Noble Oyibo Eshemitan, Oreki III and the community youth leadership.

The Oghareki community youth chairman, in a statement, confirmed that an alleged N200m oil royalties crisis had been looming in the community, but said that he did not grant any interview on the matter.

He said he would not contest what his co-chairman, Mr. Ejiro Efetoborem,  said in his interview with The Nation.

The crux of the matter is a government’s directive lifting ban on youth activities in the twin communities of Ogharafe and Ogharaeki.

The battle line is drawn between executive members of the subsisting youth organisations and the traditional institution.

The pre-ban leaders of the youth groups, want to continue in office following the lifting of the ban, but the traditional ruler (Ovie) of Oghara, Noble Oyibo Eshemitan, Oreki III, wants a new youth’s body elected based on new guidelines. The net effect of the monarch’s plan will see the removal of the executive and usher in a new group, a situation the subsisting youth group find intolerable.
