The event, which will take place at the Central Primary School, Amandugba, in Isu Local Government Area on March 30, is expected to be attended by many dignitaries.

The donor, who is also the Managing Director of One Skill Charity Foundation, noted that the concept behind the centre is to empower and train youths with quality skills to enable them to be gainfully employed and employers of labour.

Uzoagba added that the gesture, which would begin with Amandugba community in Isu Local Government Area, would be extended to other communities in other local government areas in Imo State and Nigeria.

The businessman, who said he had not received any financial assistance from anybody for his philanthropic efforts, added that he was not doing them for politics and has no intention of joining politics soon.

He enjoined the people, especially the youths, to see the centre as his little contribution to their well-being, which he urged them to reciprocate by also giving out to others when they must have secured jobs in future.

Uzoagba, who described the youths as the leaders of tomorrow, added that his foundation will provide hundreds of them in batches with skills on how to make bread, hairdressing and barbing, plumbing, electrical fittings and others.

“Right now, we have constructed a skill acquisition free school that will be going round the local governments starting from here to all parts of Nigeria, if God permits me. We have bought the land for the centre and spent over N2 million in constructing the mobile school.

“We shall soon construct the second mobile school in another local government in Imo State so that we can reach out to more youths with quality time and training,” he said.

Uzoagba said the school will take off in September, this year.

The couple came calling in the community unannounced last Christmas with clothes, shoes, bags and money for the people in the spirit of the season.

Since 2012, the 33-year-old and his 30-year-old wife have given out over 43,000 exercise books, including pens, pencils and school supplies to the children in the community and surrounding villages.

Before getting here, we gave out 13 bags of these items to Christian faithful at Redeemed Churches in Aguda, Surulere and many bags to Dustbin Village in Okoafor, Ikotun, Isolo area, Lagos. In another Lagos church, we gave out bags to people to start business with the items. At an Anglican Church in Owerri, we gave out 10 bags to the members.”

    One dead in Customs/community clash

One person died at yesterday’s clash between men of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and residents of Babura in Jigawa State.

Reports said the deceased, Umaru Babban Mutum (60), argued with officials about a car he allegedly imported from Niger Republic.

The car was impounded at the entry point.

An eyewitness said one of the officers shot the driver in the leg. An infuriated Umaru challenged them, but he was also shot in the stomach.

    He died instantly.

Immediately news of Umaru’s death filtered into the community, about 500 angry residents burnt the five checkpoints operated by Customs. Four cars belonging to the officers were burnt.

According to the Chairman of Babura Local Government Area, Mohammed Ibrahim Zaki, residents went to the police station, threatening to burn the place, until the DPO convinced them that the officials are not in their custody.

The deceased has been buried according to Islamic rites.

Comptroller of the Jigawa/Kano Area Command could not be reached for comments.

Police spokesman Mrs. Isah Danbaba confirmed the incident, saying: “We are investigating the matter”.

Couple dies as suspected herdsmen attack community

A victim, allegedly attacked by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Abraka, Ethiope East Local Government of Delta State, has died of injuries.

The victim, Mrs. Patience Akpomiemie, who was attacked on her farm, died last weekend at Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH),Oghara.

The Nation learnt that the victim’s husband, Mr. Happy Akpomiemie, who was also allegedly attacked by suspected herdsmen, died on the spot. He was shot in the back.

It was gathered that the couple and son were shot while working on their farm.

The President-General of Abraka Development Union, Dr. Joseph Tedwins, condemned the violence wreaked on the community by suspected herdsmen, saying “we have lodged a complaint at the police station.”

He added: “We are mourning the deaths. The law forbids us to retaliate. We have lodged a complaint at the police station. The police commissioner has visited our community. The police are investigating the incident. No suspect has been arrested. It appears these people are operating guerilla warfare, they attack and disappear. No culprit has been nabbed. We keep losing our people. Our farm produce are destroyed and farms torched. The killings have continued again. Until the government decides to do something about it, it is going to be a difficult thing.

“As a community, we cannot take the law into our hands. We do not have any faith in the security agencies. The area commanders, most of the security agents that should take decision on this matter are of northern extraction. They pretend to be doing one thing or the other about the matter, but they are not doing anything. But if you raise your hand to slap or insult a Fulani man, the next minute they (police) will want to arrest everyone. This is the situation we find ourselves.”

Police spokesman Andrew Aniamaka said: “We have not arrested any suspect

“We have gone beyond making arrest. But never again will this happen in Abraka. We are working with other security agencies and stakeholders, including the traditional institutions, to solve the problem.

  • Police arraign suspects as community fears attacks

The Police have arraigned three men who allegedly attacked the executives of Aso Rock Community Development Association and their security guard, causing them bodily injuries.

Oni Ayotunde (34), Osemedwa Emmanuel (32) and Prince Ifeanyi Osemedua (35), said to be staff members of Pinkron Hotels, were arraigned at the Ejigbo Chief Magistrate’s Court on a five-count charge of assault and stealing.

The prosecutor, Simon Peter, said the defendants and five others now at large, on January 27, about 7pm at Aso Rock Street Gate, Bucknor, Ejigbo, unlawfully assaulted the securityman, Jubril Mohammed, by stabbing him with a broken bottle, thereby injuring his finger.

They were accused of conspiracy to commit felony and conducting themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace “by pushing Mohammed with broken bottles, sticks and shovels”.

The Police said Ayotunde, Emmanuel and Osemedua also unlawfully assaulted the association’s Chairman Mr Declan Umeokoro by stabbing him with a broken bottle as he tried to rescue Mohammed.

The alleged offences, the Police said, contravene sections 57, 173, 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.

The prosecution alleged that the defendants and the others at large stole N1.8million belonging to Aso Rock Community, contrary to Section 280 of the Criminal Laws of State 2015.

The community is afraid that there could be further attacks on the residents as some of the suspects are at large.

It petitioned Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Other Offences  chairman, urging him to intervene to forestall a breakdown of law and order in the estate.

The petition was signed by Umeokoro, the CDA Secretary Mr Emdee David, community task force Chairman Mr Ikechukwu Onuegbu, Legal Adviser Mr Fred Onyeka and Publicity Secretary Babatunde Fatai.

The executives said they were seated at their monthly meeting at the gatehouse of Aso Rock Street collecting monthly security dues when Mohammed, who was stationed at their third gate by Victory Close, ran towards them while being hotly pursued by about eight men brandishing weapons.

They said Ayotunde allegedly broke a bottle and stabbed Mohammed on his finger.

As Mohammed was about to be stabbed again, he took cover behind Umeokoro, who in an attempt to protect Mohammed, raised his hand and was also stabbed in his finger allegedly by Ayotunde.

The defendants allegedly scattered the chairs and tables and stole all the money, including N1.2million collected from residents towards buying a transformer, and N70,000, being security levies.

The complainants said Ayotunde and his accomplices took Mohammed into the premises of Pinkron Hotels Limited at 9, Graceland Avenue, Harmony CDA, Bucknor Estate, while beating him with dangerous weapons.

On what led to the attack, Onyeka said: “We closed our three gates as we usually do every last Saturday, including the gate near the hotel for three hours, from 7am in order to collect security levies.

“As demanded by the Lagos State government, we placed a securityman there. Before 8am, one Oni, a staff member of the hotel, demanded that our security man should open our gate.

“The hotel has multiple gates. They belong to another CDA and they have more than one gate that opens into Harmony CDA. They had no business in our CDA.

“It was a case of inexplicable provocation. The security man used his discretion and refused to open the gate. Oni mobilised seven other men and the pursued the security man to our meeting venue.”

The association said it feared further attacks.

“There is an uneasy calm in our CDA presently because the other five suspects who are staff of Pinkron Hotels which is located next door to our community are still roaming about freely and are a clear and present danger to the peace and security of our CDA.

“We hereby call on you, sir, to intervene in the interest of life, peace and security to effect the apprehension others whose presence near our community is a threat to life, peace and security. We urge you to use your good offices and intervene decisively to bring the remaining suspects to book,” the community pleaded.

Ayotunde, Emmanuel and Osemedua pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The hotel’s Manager, Mrs Esther Abba, said the hotel did not send anyone to carry out the alleged attack.

“Pinkron Hotels is a responsible corporate citizen. It didn’t send any of her staff to injure anyone,” she said.

The magistrate, I. K. Layemi, granted the defendants bail for N300,000 each with two sureties, who must present evidence of tax clearance and whose addresses must be verified.

The case was adjourned till March 14 for trial.

  • Community to Govt: give us fire service station

Community to Govt: give us fire service station

Residents of Ibassa Ijegun-Egba community in Oriade Local Community Development Area (LCDA), Lagos have urged the Lagos State Government to establish a fire service in their area.

They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos yesterday that the station was necessary in the face of incessant fire incidents from tank farms located in the area.

Ibassa Ijegun-Egba Youth Association Secretary Mr Sefiu Wakili, said such a station would be able to respond to fire incidents in the area promptly.

Wakili said: “The activities of tank farms and petroleum tankers are endangering our lives in the community because of incessant fire incidents associated with their businesses.

“In 2017, there was an occasion where petroleum tankers fell on the road and nearly caught fire.

“We expect that there should be an emergency fire station within our community that will speedily respond to such incidents.

“All the 12 farm tanks located in our community do not have fire-fighting equipment in case of fire outbreak.

“We are imploring the government of Lagos to build a fire service station in our community because our lives and properties are not safe here,” he said.

Mr Lamidi Olatunji, another resident of the area said they were jittery any time there was fire outbreak in tank farms within the area because there was no fire service station in the vicinity.

“On January 24, when Stallionaire Oil and Gas depot went on fire, everybody abandoned the community; some went to pick their children in school.

“If fire service men did not come on time, the whole community would have been in flames because the 12 tank farms are located beside one another. This is not the first time that oil depots here will burst into flams; it occurred twice in 2016.

“We are appealing to both the Federal and State Government to save us from incessant fire incidents from these tank farms by giving us a fire station of our own,” he said.

Mr Adagun Raheem said the community was ready to provide land where the station would be built, if approved by government.

According to Raheem, the fire station, when built, will give the residents rest of mind anytime there is outbreak of fire.

The community condemned a statement credited to a market leader that they would not support the siting of an Art Theatre in the area.

At a stakeholders’ meeting, a youth leader in the community, Ahmed Jimoh, said criminals use the market as a hide out.

He said: “Abule- Ijeha people are fed up with incessant attacks coming from that market and many of the shops are empty. Hoodlums use the place as their abode. The few traders there had on several occasions appealed to youths to help them dislodge the hoodlums and this often leads to brutal confrontation. It would be a big relieve for the residents if the market could be converted to a more productive venture.”

Baale of Abule ljesha Chief Kolawole Dawodu said the Arts Theatre would create employment, beautify and eradicate insecurity in the community.

The Chairman Community Royal Development Committee, Mr Adeboye Odunsi said the project will enhance the status of the area and create employment for the youths.

Yaba LCDA Chairman Kayode Adejare Omiyale said the project was initiated by his predecessors.

“Immediately I assumed office, I intensified consultations to actualise the project. • Suspected herdsmen kill one in Ondo community

Suspected herdsmen kill one in Ondo community

Suspected Fulani herdsmen have killed a woman on her farm in Arodoye community in Akure South Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The identity of the slain woman could not be established last night.

The attackers were said to have also destroyed several acres of farmland in the area.

The community’s farmers decried incessant invasion of their farms by herdsmen, saying they lost millions of naira each time the herdsmen reared their cattle on their farms.

The farmers said the suspected herdsmen destroyed farm produce, such as cassava, coco yams, yams, vegetables and set on fire a cocoa plantation.

Speaking on behalf of the farmers, Justice Micheal Omoyemi, traced the genesis of the invasion to December 2016 when the herdsmen harvested most of the farm produce during the Christmas/New Year break.

He said: “The herdsmen also returned last December, destroying over 5,000 heaps of cassava in my farm. They took the advantage of the break and brought their cattle and uprooted the cassava to feed their cows.

“We have reported the herdsmen to the security agents in the past and also to the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladelusi Aladetoyinbo, who promised to intervene.

“The herdsmen are determined to send the farmers out of the farm in the Southwest unless steps are taken by the concerned authorities; hence, it will degenerate into ethnic clashes in the Southwest. What they have destroyed in a twinkle of an eye is worth millions of naira.”

One of the farmers, Victory Oweh, said he lost over 10 acres of his farms to the herdsmen and their cows.

The farmer said the herdsmen also set his farm ablaze after destroying the crops.

He said: “We are just respecting the law of the land and trying not to take the law into our hands. We have been reporting them to security agents with no positive results.”

Oweh, who said he voluntarily resigned from office two years ago to embrace farming, regretted that the incessant invasion of his farm had defeated his mission.

He said: “I cannot imagine working all through the year and some herdsmen and their cattle just invaded our farms and wasted all our labour within one day.

“The Ondo State government should follow the steps taken by the Ekiti State government by enacting laws to curb the activities of the herdsmen in the state. We are calling on the state government and security agents before taking the laws into our hands.”

He said the suspected herdsmen killed another farmer, Patience Salami, on her farm some days ago, while no arrest was made by law enforcement agencies.

Justice Owoyemi said the farmers had petitioned Governor Olurotimi Akeredolu (SAN), security agencies and the Ministry of Agriculture about the incident.
