  • Mountain Top varsity holds music concert

An assortment of music was performed during the Gospel Musical Concert of the Mountain Top University last Saturday.

The programme, held at the university’s campus on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, featured music rendered in Jazz, Afro beat, orchestra styles and instrumentals by various choirs, dance, acapella, and guitar groups.

Dr Daniel Olukoya, General Overseer of the Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministry (MFM), which owns the university, sponsored the programme.

Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Elijah Ayolabi, said the variety night programme was organised for the students to get entertained in Christ.

“It is a kind of gathering with  spiritual impartation. It is an opportunity for them to get excited in line with the will of God, get connected and also lifted up in the spirit,” he said.

Pastor Paul Momoh, Coordinator of Abundant Grace, one of the choir groups, said music had its own power of transforming lives, which could be used to draw the youth closer to God.

He noted that Nigerian music had evolved and greatly impacts the youth; therefore, there was a need for morals and spiritual sense of belonging to be inculcated in the youth.

He said through training of students in gospel music, the value of Christ who sacrificed himself for the redemption of sins can be well appreciated and lives transformed.

A member of Asaph Choir, Chinasa Okafor, decried the lyrics of some of the Nigerian music

‘’Though Nigerian music has advanced over time but I still don’t get the grip of the meaningless lyrics in our songs today. Do we have to use vulgar words to further corrupt the minds of the listeners rather than impact positively? At times you listen to songs making rounds and you question their moral values,’’ she said.

IT was a night to remember for fun seekers last Monday, barely 24 hours to the Valentine Day celebration, as they were treated to electrifying stage performances to usher the people into the mood of celebration.

It was more than music during the concert which took place at Agip Hall, MUSON Centre, Lagos as MTN Foundation Alumni enlivened the atmosphere with beautiful melodious sound of string and wind instruments, classical music, opera and contemporary Nigerian tune that left the audience asking for more.

The valentine concert featured different music genres from jazz, funk, blues, upbeat folklores and string instruments.

The participants who thought they had seen it all were again wowed with a scintillating drama dance performance by the MUSON scholars.

  • Sunny Ade @ 70: How Juju singer rocked own concert

Sunny Ade @ 70: How Juju singer rocked own concert

    •Singer’s guiter sold for N5.2m

It was a unique assignment for Juju music maestro, who performed with unusual emotion at the grand concert to mark his 70th birthday celebrations, which began weeks before September 22, 2016; the day he hit the septuagenarian age.
The concert held on Sunday, at the Temple Balmoral Marquee, Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Although his fans trooped in in their hundreds to witness the show, the singer could be said to have played his part in celebrating himself – overwhelmed in his own sound, as he hit the chord of his guitar like it was going to be his last.
KSA had joined other singers at the show to perform for himself, spending close to one and half hour, non-stop, for his first action which began around 1: am on Monday. And when he re-appeared for his second session, his energy on stage and dexterity on the instrument did not wane at all, and this lasted till the wee hours of the day.
His offerings for the night were his classics, which still had their appeals on both young and old. Although several guest artistes had climbed the stage before him, the concert was planned for him to perform last – the big masquerade, as they say, does take the last bow – KSA was the star of his own show.
In his typical humble manner, the veteran artiste paused during a performance to pay obeisance to all, saying; “If I die today, you all have celebrated me already.”
The show, put together by The Temple Company and tagged ‘Sunny on Sunday’, was also attended by socialites and prominent members of the society like Aliko Dangote, Femi Otedola and Babatunde Raji Fashola.
The event was also attended by veteran singers Onyeka Onwenu, Sir Shina Peters and visiting Congolese performer Awilo Longomba, as well as younger artistes like Don Jazzy, Waje, Iyanya, Niniola, Terry Apala, Tiwa Savage, DJ Jimmy Jatt, Toke Makinwa, Omawumi, Funke Akindele, Lolo and Darey Art Alade among others.
The audience was equally thrilled by the performances of Niniola, Terry Apala, Omawumi, Darey and Onwenu, who was joined by KSA as she rendered their 1989 duet entitled “Wait For Me” to laud applause.
Awilo Longomba too was joined on stage by the celebrant. Although a notable dancer himself, the moment for him was for the KSA’s kind of dance.
When it was the turn of Sir Shina Peters, the singer eulogized the celebrant whom he described as a father, before dishing out his popular hits, including the anthem called “Shinamania”.
One of the side attractions at the event was the auction of KSA’s vintage fender guitar, designed by Nigerian visual artist Victor Ehikhamenor. The bid which began with N9m eventually closed with N52.1m. The guitar was auctioned by Dr. Jogun Onabanjo, Certified Auctioneer and Chief Executive of Onabanjo and Onabanjo & Co. winner of the bid is yet to be revealed.

  • Concert boosts school’s CSR drive

Despite the economic downturn, Mavizzion School, Magbon in Badagry, Lagos State, is getting a new classroom block thanks to Dansol Christian Mission (DCM), owners of Dansol Primary School and Dansol High School, Agidingbi.

The project, which has reached lintel level but needs up to N25 million to be completed, got a boost through a fundraising and gala concert by Church Christian Network Choir in collaboration with DCM and the Parents/Teachers Association of the schools.

The concert raised N1,235,500 from tickets sale (at N20,000 per table), would go towards completion of the project.

During the event the guests were treated to soul-lifting music by the CCN Choir and a mass choir made up of pupils of the school.

Mrs Adun Akinyemiju, President, DCM, said she was initially skeptical about agreeing to the concert considering the economic recession.  “I felt it would be insensitive,” she said. However, with the support of the choir director, Lanre Oyeneye, who offered all tickets sales for the project, and with parents contributing towards the project, she said she felt encouraged.

Mrs Akinyemiju said Dansol decided to adopt Mavizzion when it realised that the school, located in a highly-economically deprived area with no public schools, was offering quality Christian education at almost no cost.

However, because of the low fees the school charges, it cannot afford standard facilities, which DCM has stepped in to provide.

She said the pupils of Dansol are encouraged to support the project by helping to raise funds and visiting the school to help with the construction work.

“We have done quite a bit.  The children and friends of Dansol put something in regularly.  We need to teach our children to give. A school building is about life. It is where children are raised. The school is in a poor area and cannot raise funds from fees,” she said.

Mrs Mary Ike, who runs Mavizzion Primary School with her husband, Jonathan, said the school started in 1999 after she was directed by God to leave her bank job to reach out to the less privileged.  She said the school charges N6,000 per term.

“We started in 1999.  God trained me himself.  I was in my office in UBA when God told me to raise children for him,” she said.

She said the new school building would really boost teaching and learning in the school.

PTA Chairman of Dansol High School, Mrs Olubukola Ajoku, said parents decided to support the project after visiting the school.

“A PTA representative went to the school and saw the dilapidated building they were using.  I told the woman that even me that attended a public primary school it was not as bad.  The school wasn’t well built; they made the chairs themselves.  We decided that if our children have this comfort here at Dansol, we should do it for others,” she said.

CCN President, Oyeneye, said the choir got involved to help DCM complete the project.

“What we saw when we visited was highly emotional.  When we were in school, it wasn’t this bad,” he said.
