  • Akpabio condemns death of APC chief

Akwa Ibom State Governor Godswill Akpabio has condemned the death of a former Deputy Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Okon Uwah.

In a statement yesterday signed by the Commissioner of Information and Communications, Mr. Aniekan Umanah, Akpabio regretted that despite the peace accord on peaceful and violence-free elections signed by parties, some miscreants still trample upon the law.

The statement reads: “The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Dr. Godswill Akpabio, has learnt about the unfortunate incident leading to the death of Okon Uwah, a former Peoples Democratic Party stalwart, and former deputy speaker of the House of Assembly, who was an APC candidate for the Ukanafun.

“The governor and the state government condemn the dastardly, strange and cowardly occurrence.  Government regrets that, inspite of the accord on peaceful and violence-free elections signed by parties, some miscreants have decided to trample upon the law.  It bears stressing that no person’s political ambition is worth the blood of any citizen.

“It is, however, to be noted that following the directive of the governor, the security agencies had swung into action and some arrests have been made.  Besides, Governor Akpabio has further directed that a fullscale probe into the event of  Uwah’s death be carried out to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book, no matter their political leanings.

“The governor warns that violence and political thuggery of any kind will not be tolerated and reassures citizens of the preparedness of the government and security agencies to maintain law and order and protect the lives of citizens as well as ensure a peaceful and orderly conduct of the 2015 elections.

“Governor Akpabio commiserates with the bereaved family and assures them that the security agencies will unravel the cause of the tragedy and bring the culprits before the law.”

Ondo APC chieftains condemns attack on Buhari

A former Commissioner for Natural Resources in Ondo State and Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prince Solagbade Amodeni at the weekend urged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to stop attacking the personality of the former head of state, Gen Muhammadu Buhari.

Amodeni emphasised that the Nigerian Army is one of the institutions that invested heavily in education and training of its officers and could be rated highly among its peers worldwide.

According to him, discussing issues on the APC presidential candidate is ridiculous, stressing that best brains have always been paraded in the Army.

He said, the more the PDP members are casting aspersions on Buhari, the more Nigerians are accepting him as a person who can salvage the country from its doldrums.

The APC stalwart faulted President Jonathan for accusing past leaders of not funding the military, stressing that his predecessors used what they met on ground effectively rather than spending on frivolities.

Maheeda condemns Fed Govt’s plan to ban porn websites

Nigerian singer, Caroline Sam, aka Maheeda, has described as hypocrisy, the plan by the Federal Government to ban X-rated movies and porn websites in the country. The National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, on Sunday, said that the Federal Government is planning to introduce a law that will ban and block all porn websites in the country.

Reacting to the report, Maheeda opined that hypocrisy is the reason why government would be planning to carry out such exercise.

Why naija sabi suffer themselves? Watin them love them de pretend. Is it me or hypocrisy is part of naija culture? Well.. Abeg make den ban porn for naija, I no live there. It will only make me bigger! I go change my name to Maheeda Holland,” the self-acclaimed goddess of X tweeted.

  • Ekiti APC condemns assassination attempt on Rep

Ekiti APC condemns assassination attempt on Rep

The All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State has condemned assassination attempt on its House of Representatives member representing Ekiti South Federal Constituency 1,  Dr. Ifeoluwa Arowosoge in the early hours of Friday.

The unknown gunmen did not meet the federal lawmaker at home but kept asking for the whereabouts of the APC chieftain and mercilessly beat his wife, Oluwayemisi and other members of the family.

The police have described the incident as an armed robbery but the state chapter of the APC disagreed.

The party described the attempt “as one attack too many”.

ýIn a statement by the State Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun,  the Ekiti APC said it is worrisome that the latest incident is happening two weeks after the Speaker, Dr Adewale Omirin, narrowly escaped assassination in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital. The party called the attention of the Inspector General of Police to the alleged conspiratorial role of the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police on such attacks by always dismissing them as armed robbery attacks.

“When some suspected assassins laid siege to the house of the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Dr Adewale Omirin, two weeks ago, the Commissioner of Police who rescued the Speaker after a distress call to him at midnight later denied that such incident happened even when the Speaker himself confirmed the attempt on his life”, Olatubosun said.

  • APC chieftain condemns use of soldiers in elections

APC chieftain condemns use of soldiers in elections

A security consultant and chieftain of the All Progessives Congress (APC), Dipo Okeyomi, has described as over-kill the plan to use soldiers during the governorship election in Osun State.

Okeyomi said there is no need to militarise a civilian election when the country is not in a war situation whereby the electorate would need tight security to and from polling centres.

He, therefore, described the action as a danger to democracy and a temptation to the military authorities.

Okeyomi advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Federal Government to allow the electorate to decide their preferred candidates among the contestants, instead of pursuing what he called desperate politics.

“Nothing can be more desperate. That is what it is. And it is unfortunate that international community would be mocking us as unorganised country. How can a state election be such militarised? It is an attempt to deny the electorate their right to  troop out to vote for their choice candidates,” he noted.

The politician also said that his finding among the electorate in Osun State had shown him that the incumbent governor Rauf Aregbesola, is people’s choice, urging the Federal Government to respect the people’s right to express their preference as stipulated by the principle of democracy.

Okeyomi further stated that the physical transformation of Osun State by  the Aregbesola administration in the last four years informed the people’s readiness to give the governor a second term to complete many projects he is currently handling.

Parents of school children, he stressed, had never had it so comfortable with the free uniform and new buses the government has provided for them.

“These were done to encourage mass education without making the parents going through financial stress. Free diet for the basic school pupils has proved to be a success as well,” Okeyomi said.

He then warned the Federal Government to allow peace to reign during the election by instructing the soldiers and other security agencies to allow the electorate free access to polling booths to cast their vote without fear. He said failure to do this might be counter-productive because the people of Osun are passionate about the rate of development going on in the state.

“They should not underrate the feelings of these people. They are ready to use their vote to show appreciation to a governor who has brought change to their towns. So, denying them the opportunity would not be met with a smile,” he said.

  • NSCIA condemns ethno- religious violence

Secretary-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) Prof Ishaq Oloyede, has condemned the spate of religion and ethnic intolerance in the country.

He canvassed a holistic dialogue as a panacea to resolve the lingering crises.

Oloyede spoke at a Ramadan lecture organised by the Islamic Youth League of Nigeria (IYL) in Abuja.

Religions bodies, he said, should embrace one another as no religion preaches hatred and intolerance.

He called for the creation of desk gallery in the mosque where anyone from other religion can sit without coming in to mosque.

“Visitors should be allowed into the Mosque premises. Let him worship according to the doctrine of his religion while I will pray according to the doctrine of my religion. There should be no compulsion in the ways and manners one intends to worship his God,” he said.

Guest speaker, the Chief Imam of University of Ibadan Prof Abdul Rahman Oloyede, said violence has never been in the ethics of Islam to resolve issues.

He called for Interfaith Committee (IFC) or strengthening the National Inter Religious Council (NIREC) through legal means.

Quoting from the Quran and the Hadith (sayings of the Prophet), Oloyede said Muslims are bound to treat their neighbours with kindness regardless of their religion affiliations.

“The best form of Jihad (struggle) is for Muslims to convey the message of Islam to humanity by written/spoken words as well as by translating the Islamic teachings in individual and collective spheres of life. If a non-Muslim asks for help, you must help him. If he is sick, you must visit him. You don’t raise your building above his building without his permission and do not cause him grieve,” he said.

IYL Garki Division chairman, Dr Aliu Akano, said it is incumbent upon mankind to strive, through dialogue to promote peace in the society.

“These actions would strengthen confidence, reduce security challenges and allow peace to reign. This is because sincere, comprehensive, and balance dialogue lead to justice, equity, development, happiness and peace in a society,” he said.

  • APC condemns killing of Emir of Gwoza

The All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday condemned the killing of the Emir of Gwoza, Alhaji Idrissa Timta, by suspected Boko Haram gunmen. The party described the sect as the nation’s enemy, and not a group set up by some imaginary opposition parties or elite to bring down the President Goodluck Jonathan administration.

In a statement in Lagos, its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the killing of the Emir is the clearest indication yet that the Jonathan administration misdiagnosed the Boko Haram menace from the outset.

When the indiscriminate activities of Boko Haram insurgents are placed side by side with other facts: that the group started in 2002 when Olusegun Obasanjo was President and flared in 2009 when the late Umar Yar’Adua was President, one would realise how deceitful and diversionary it is for anyone to portray it as an attempt to make Nigeria ungovernable under Jonathan.

“Boko Haram is not a northern response to a southern presidency, as some would have us believe. Boko Haram is an enemy of Nigeria; whether Christians or Muslims, southerners or northerners, the lowly or the elite, the young or the old, the poor and the rich. They must be seen for what they are: fringe elements who happen to have linked up with other terror groups around the world to acquire training and weapons which they are now using to terrorise a whole nation.

“That Emirs, who are Muslims and symbols of power in the North, can be so dastardly attacked, with deadly consequences, should convince those who would rather engage in the blame game than fight the bandits that what the country faces is neither a strictly religious nor elite war, and make them to change their jaundiced mindset.

“If indeed Boko Haram was sponsored by the so-called northern elite against Jonathan, how come they are not even sparing the same elite? If indeed Boko Haram is sponsored by the North against Jonathan, why are their deadly attacks concentrated in the North, where they have killed thousands and destroyed facilities and infrastructure worth billions?

“Let us all see Boko Haram for what it is, and come together as a people to fight the insurgents, rather than engage in denial, blame game and finger-pointing that can only weaken our resolve as a nation to tackle this fringe group squarely,” APC said.

The party said the insurgency has festered because the government started off by not seeing it for what it is, thus losing valuable time to combat it, adding that when it started dawning on the government that the nation faces a serious problem, it responded by seeking to make political gains out of it.

‘’Those who saw Boko Haram, erroneously, as a political trump card have now suffered a boomerang, and today the Jonathan administration is seen globally as incompetent, clueless and rudderless largely because of its inept handling of the Boko Haram insurgency, especially the unfortunate abduction of innocent school girls which has lingered. This is what you get when you play politics with a serious national problem,” it said.

APC restated its demand for a national security conference, as different from a gathering of all parties, to help forge a common front against Boko Haram.

“We also reiterate our offer to join hands with the government in a non-partisan effort to battle the menace of Boko Haram, even though the government has yet to reach out to us since we made that offer,” the party said.

Also yesterday, Senate President David Mark, decried Timta’s murder.

Mark was quoted in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Paul Mumeh, in Abuja, as saying: “This unabating  bloodshed is senseless and needless.”

The Senate President also renewed his appeal to Boko Haram to listen to the voice of reason and drop its weapons in the interest of peace and unity.

Consoling the government and people of Borno State, he prayed that God would expose the perpetrators of the crime.

Mark also urged the security agencies not to be deterred by the challenges but to be strengthened more in the battle to defend the country.

  • Muslim leader condemns social vices

An Islamic leader and Secretary to Mushin Local Government, Lagos State, Hon. Yahya Olawale Ismail, has urged Muslims to refram from terrorism, adultery, fornication, corruption, gambling and homo-sexuality. These vices, he said were plaguing the nation today.

Olawale was the lecturer at the Annual Maulid Nabbiy, a programme organised by Mushin Council of Imams and Ullamau, in conjunction with the Mushin Muslim Community, which was held at the Mushin Central Mosque in Mushin Local Government Area of Lagos State. He spoke on “Islam and contemporary issues.”

He urged clerics to build mini-western and Arabic schools in their mosques. “Try your best to seek more knowledge in order to contribute to matters in the world,” he said.

The Chief Imam of Olorungbebe Central Mosque, Imam Tajudeen Yusuf led the reading from the Holy Quran while Chief Imam of Olorunsogo, Alhaji Abdul Fatai Abdl Kareem took the opening prayer.

The second lecturer, Fadilat Sheikh Soliu Hussein (As-Samodany) spoke on “Muhammad as the best of mankind.”

The programme also featured special prayers for the nation, which was led by the host, Chief Imam of Mushin Land, Fodilatu Sheikh Sulaimon Opeyemi Bukhari Olanijo.

Others present included: Wife of Senator Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon, Alhaja Rahmota Aderonke; Alhaji Monsurudeen Adeleye, who represented Hon. Bolaji Yusuf Ayinla, Member, Lagos State House of Assembly; First Lady of Mushin Local Government, Alhaja Rashidat Adepitan, and Alhaji Zunuraine Jumah Onimosa (Ilasa/Alafia Division).

  • Ogun APC condemns LP’s call for Amosun’s impeachment

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State has condemned the Labour Party’s (LP’s) call for Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s impeachment.

The LP made the call following the disagreement between the governor and Ogun APC members in the National Assembly.

In a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Sola Lawal, the APC said the disagreement was “a mere expression of differences in opinion among members of a vibrant political family.”

It said: “The development is a testimonial to the vibrancy and democratic credentials of a party, in which enlightened dissent is encouraged. Unlike the LP and others that are on a permanent life support, the APC has attained enviable heights in placing our state in the topmost echelon in civilised conduct.”

The party said the state has experienced peace and economic growth under its watch, which it said had been attested to by national and international financial authorities.

APC said: “The effects of the transformation agenda of the Amosun enigma in governance are so real and ubiquitous that even the blind can see them. Great roads have been built as never before; modern bridges have sprung up in a way never experienced; schools and hospitals now litter our domain and folks now sleep with both eyes closed.

“As is the case with all achievements, it is expected that Amosun’s would attract the envy of retrogressive characters .”

  • CJN condemns ill practices among lawyers

CJN condemns ill practices among lawyers

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Mariam Aloma Mukhtar, has decried the high rate lawyers breach professional ethics.

She said the nation’s Bar was populated by individuals with questionable characters.

The CJN said the efforts to reform the Judiciary would fail unless lawyers observe the ethics of the profession.

Justice Mukhtar spoke in Abuja when a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and Chairman, Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC), Joseph Daudu (SAN), visited her office to present copies of a document, titled: Directions and Rulings of the LPDC of the Body of Benchers from January to May 2013.

The CJN hailed Daudu for supporting the National Judicial Council (NJC) to sanitise and rid the Bench of bad eggs.

Justice Mukhtar said several petitions against lawyers were being sent to her office and that she had despatched same to the LPDC to handle.

She said some of the petitions were “thought-provoking and mind-boggling”.

The CJN urged Daudu and his committee to intensify efforts because of the increasing numbers of lawyers engaging in unwholesome practices.

“It seems the LPDC is assiduously competing with the NJC, as the two bodies are now running side-by-side to cleanse the Judiciary.

“I believe that, for the Judiciary to be reformed, lawyers must be disciplined. With the number of reports we are now receiving, you just have to work harder.

“Some petitions came to me which I sent to you, and some of them were quite thought provoking,” she said.

She described the LPDC’s report as “a very nice document which would be useful to many lawyers and judges including those of us at the Supreme Court since appeals against your decisions will lie at the apex court.

Justice Mukhtar said: “You have to bear with the pressure and hazards of the job, since you are sitting over the judgement of your colleagues.”

Daudu explained that at the time of his committee’s appointment, there were 51 pending cases, of which they had treated 42, with nine outstanding.

He said the NBA had instituted more cases against erring lawyers.
