  • Obasanjo, Saraki, Sambo, Aregbesola, El-Rufa’i, others condole with Shagari’s family

    MORE eminent Nigerians  yesterday  condoled with the family of late ex-President Shehu Shagari.

    They include former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki,  ex-Vice President Namadi Sambo, former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima and Kaduna State Governor Nasiru el-Rufa’i have

    They described him as an epitome of personal integrity, commitment, forbearance, forgiveness and faith in God.

    Obasanjo, Saraki, Sambo, el-Rufa’i and Shettima spoke in their condolence remarks at the residence of the late Shagari.

    Aregbesola expressed his condolences in a statement by his spokesman Mr. Sola Fasure.

    Obasanjo was led to the Sama Road, Sokoto family house of the late Second Republic President by Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal after arriving through the Sadiq Abubakar III International Airport, Sokoto at about 9a.m.

    The former president, who was received by Shagari’s eldest son, Muhammadu Bala Shagari, said the late elder statesman was a man of simplicity, faith in God and commitment to the fatherland.

    Obasanjo, while noting his days in service and closeness to the late Shagari when they were both Federal Commissioners of Works and Finance in Gen. Yakubu Gowon’s cabinet, said the late Shagari was an honest, transparent and committed Nigerian.

    Obasanjo recalled how the late Shagari expressed surprise when the mantle of leadership was handed to him in 1979 by a military head of state, who happened to be himself.

    The junior Shagari thanked the former President for the condolence visit and appreciated his closeness to late Shagari.

    He noted that Obasanjo was the man, who assisted their late father to have a house of his own in Abuja.

    “Sir, I must say that of our family members of nine children to late Shagari, none of us, if not of recent that two have such property in Abuja. We are living his life style too.”

    He ushered the former President in to condole with the widows.

    Saraki has said Nigerians should learn from the sense of humour, wisdom and patriotism of late former President Shehu Shagari.

    According to Saraki, he was a true and reliable democrat. If we hold on to that, our democracy will be more strong and promising. He stood for the development of Nigeria as a nation.

    Saraki who visited the family of the former President  yesterday afternoon whom he regarded a father and close associate of his late father, described the death as a great loss to Nigeria.

    He said Shagari lived a worthy and trusted life for the development of the country.

    “He lived a humble life to the fullest with exemplary sense of commitment and dedication to service”, he pointed out.”

    Saraki was in company of the PDP National Chairman, Uche Secondus, Sen. Sani Yariman Bakura, Alhaji Tanimu Turaki, Ataahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa among others led by Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.

    Aregbesola said yesterday that he received with much sadness the news of the passage of the first democratically elected president.

    The former Osun State governor said he, however, accepted the news of Shagari’s exit with total submission to the will of Allah, describing it as an irreparable loss to the country.

    He described the former President as a complete gentleman and a devout Muslim through his life.

    He said the deceased could hardly hurt a fly, but found himself among political hawks during his tenure as President.

    Aregbesola noted that the late Shagari was a compassionate person, a patriot, believer in project Nigeria and its unity, which was evident in the slogan of his party – One Nation, One Destiny, One Country.

    Aregbesola noted that Shagari’s demise closed the chapter of the vibrant and colourful presidential gladiators of the Second Republic democratic experience.

    Sambo urged Nigerians to emulate the worthy legacies and principles of the deceased, whom he described as a father.

    Praying for the deceased, Sambo urged other Nigerians to emulate Shagari.

    Also, el-Rufa’i described the late former president as a symbol of respect and humility.

    “We heard a lot about him in our youthful days as students in Barewa College, Zaria on his good leadership virtues,” he said.

    Welcoming them, Shagari’s son expressed gratitude to Allah for the remarks on his late father, whom he described as an uncommon symbol of good relations across the country.

    To Shettima, the late Shagari was a shining example for his unequalled democratic legacies as a unifying factor for Nigeria’s prosperity.

    According to him, “he would be remembered for his humility, selfless service and good governance as a true democrat.”

    More sympathisers also visited and registered their condolences to the family.

  • Fans, colleagues condole with D’banj over son’s death

    Condolences have been pouring for popular singer, Daniel Oyebanjo, aka D’banj, over the death of his son, Daniel Oyebanjo III.

    The singer had confirmed the death of his son on Sunday night on his Instagram page.

    Sharing a black picture, he wrote @iambangalee, “Trying times but my God is always and forever faithful.”

    Daniel, who celebrated his first birthday in May, reportedly drowned in the family pool.

    Following confirmation of the sad news, condolences began to pour in from celebrities and fans alike replicating the black picture shared by the bereaved D’banj.

    Former label mate and producer, Don Jazzy wrote, “Just heard the worst news in a long time.”

    Singer Bank W wrote @bankywellington, “Sending prayers up for @iambangalee, his wife and their entire family. This is a nightmare. Heart wrenching news. May God strengthen and comfort y’all in this absolutely terrible time in Jesus name.”

    Music diva and Mavin First Lady, Tiwa Savage also wrote; “I was just holding you last month celebrating your birthday. I am in shock, my heart is broken. This is unbearable.”

    Another former label mate, Dr Sid said, “The Lord is your strength my brother.”

    Others including Big Brother Naija 2018 alumni, Alex, Tobi Bakre, singer Dija and actress, Tonto Dikeh have also expressed their condolences.

    Meanwhile, fans of the singer have taken to social media to mourn with him.

    @Ify_love tweeted, “the worst news. Couldn’t possibly imagine what they are going through.”

    @felyxxx01 wrote, “This is really sad. Such a lovely kid. My condolences to Dbanj and his wife.”

    Meanwhile, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Edgal Imohimi, on behalf of officers and men of Lagos State Police Command, commiserated with the family of the entertainer on the death of his one-year-old son.

    In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer Lagos, CSP Chike Oti, Imohimi said that the entire Command shares in their pain at this period of their grief.

    Although a delegation from the Command, led by the Divisional Police Officer, Ikoyi Division, CSP Mustapha N’Abba, who were at the Ikoyi home of the Oyebanjos on a condolence visit did not meet anyone at home, they were urged to formally report the circumstances that led to the unfortunate death of little Daniel to the police when the mourning period is over.

    Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson, has described Mrs Awolowo’s death as unfortunate, noting that, she passed on at a time, she was just getting ready to celebrate her 100th birthday.

    “On behalf of the Government and good people of Bayelsa State, I, sincerely, commiserate with the immediate and extended families on the death of Mama, who was the matriarch of the great Awolowo family. It is unfortunate that Mama died at a time when she was just getting ready to celebrate her 100th birthday”.

    The Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Prof. Isaac Folorunso Adewole, said she was an upright Nigerian with an impeccable and immaculate character, worthy of emulation.

    Quoting the words of Victor Hugo, the VC said: “It is nothing to die, it is frightful not to live”; for Mama Awolowo, she came, she fought and she conquered.

    Prof. Adewole said she has lived and done her  best, “she is irreplaceable. She will forever live on in our memories.”

    The National Union of Textile Garments and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria, NUTGTWN, has said Nigeria has lost a role model.

    In a statement in Kaduna, its Secretary General, Comrade Issa Aremu, said: “Mama HID Awolowo lived to the end on her sweat and hard work NOT on corruption and stolen public wealth.

    “Both Mama and Papa Awolowo respected dignity of labour for Nigeria, Africa and humanity.  Africa has indeed lost a role model for womenhood, family, humility, hard work and love of “inestimable value”.

  • Ortom, Akume condole with el-Rufai

    Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, early yesterday in Kaduna paid a condolence visit to his Kaduna State counterpart, Nasir El-Rufai, following the recent loss of his foster father, Alhaji Yahaya Hamza.

    All Progressives Congress (APC) leader in Benue State and the Senator representing Benue North West, Senator Dr George Akume, led the condolence delegation.

    Governor Ortom stated that an earlier scheduled visit could not hold due to unforeseen circumstances.

    He described the death of a loved one at whatever age as painful but urged his colleague to take solace in the fact that the deceased lived a life of committed service to his fatherland, adding that all must one day return to the creator.

    Senator Akume, who stated that he knew the late Alhaji Hamza at the Federal Ministry of Education, described him as a humble and unassuming man.

    In his response, Governor El-Rufai said he would always remember his cousin who adopted him at the age of eight when he lost his father as a kind-hearted and accomplished educationist.

    The deceased was once Secretary to the Kaduna State Government and Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Education.

    He died at the age of 82.

    Glo Premier League side, Heartland have expressed their heartfelt condolences to match day 1 opponents Kano Pillars.

    The Nigerian champions were on Thursday involved in an armed robbery on the outskirts of Abuja on their way to the Imo state capital, Owerri, for the season’s opener at Heartland today at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri.

    Heartland top shot, Okechukwu Ibe said the news of the unfortunate incident jolted every member of the Heartland family as they were keenly expecting the Pyramid City side in Owerri for the match day 1 clash cracker.

    The Heartland boss also prayed for the quick recovery of all those injured in the mindless attack.

    “May God help all the injured to recover and may such never happen again to any team in Nigeria,” said Ibe to supersport.com.

    Jonathan, wife condole with Sambo over brother’s death

    President Goodluck Jonathan and First Lady Dame Patience yesterday led some top government officials to condole with Vice-President Namadi Sambo over the death of his brother, Yusuf.

    Yusuf, who was a pilot, died early yesterday in a ghastly motor accident on the Abuja Airport Road.

    At the time of the accident, the Vice-President was away in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania representing Jonathan at the country’s golden jubilee anniversary.

    He returned to Nigeria yesterday and headed to the National Mosque where a brief funeral service was conducted in honour of the deceased.

    The deceased remains were later interred at a cemetery in Abuja.

    Jonathan described the circumstances of the deceased’s death as saddening. He said yesterday was one of the saddest days in Nigeria.

    He said: “We are all mere mortals. All of us are from the earth, we must all go back to the earth. We do not know the timing of this journey all of us must make. This world is a place where we come to play our different roles. He left too early. Maybe he left when the ovation is loudest. He left at a time we needed him most. But there is nothing we can do.”

    Sambo said the deceased, who was his immediate younger brother, was one of the most experienced pilots in the country. He thanked the President for leading government officials to condole with him.

    Senate President, David Mark, yesterday commiserated with Vice President Namadi Sambo and his family over the untimely death of his younger brother, Captain Sabo Sambo, in a motor accident.

    Mark in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Paul Mumeh, in Abuja, regretted that the nation has lost one of her best pilots and officers of very high repute.

    He prayed the Almighty Allah to grant the deceased eternal rest and the deceased family the fortitude to bear the loss.

    Wikki condole Kaduna Utd over Lato’s death

    The chairman of Wikki Tourists FC of Bauchi, Suleiman Abdullahi Chindo has expressed sympathy with the management of Kaduna United and the family of coach Saleh Lato.

    The late Lato died over the weekend and Chindo said the news of his death came as a shock to him.

    The Wikki boss described Lato as a very religious, committed, dedicated, hardworking, and truthful. He said he was a man who does not want to fail in any responsibility assigned to him.

    Chindo said in a message of condolence signed by the club’s secretary Tijjani Ahmed Suleiman, that: “Coach Lato has contributed greatly to the development of football in Nigeria as a player and as a coach. His death really touched the chairman because he was his play mate and they were very close.”

    He said the late Lato died at a time when his services were most needed particularly at this time when NFF is doing everything humanly possible to rebuild the Nigerian image in football and giving Nigerian coaches the opportunity to prove their worth.

    While praying for his departed soul, Chindo prayed to God to give his family and the management of Kaduna United FC the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

    The condolence message also expressed concern and deep sorrow over the death of a former captain of the senior national team Albert Onyeawuna and five players of Nigeria Nationwide league side Bakoji FC of Kaduna all over the festive period.

    Warri Wolves condole with Shooting

    Warri Wolves have sympathised with 3SC over the death of their striker Moses Ogaga who died on Wednesday after a protracted illness in Ibadan.

    Ogaga played for Jigawa Golden Stars and Kano Pillars before a switch to the Oluyole Warriors where he was until his untimely death.

    The Seasiders’ media officer, Moses Etu revealed to SportingLife that it was with rude shock and deep feeling that they received the death of the enterprising player whose budding career had been cut short by the cold hands of death.

    He prayed that God gave the parents of the deceased the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss and that 3SC should take heart as it is appointed unto all humans to die at certain periods of their lives.

    “He was a young budding player with so much promise. He could have gone ahead to play for Warri Wolves or any other top club in Nigeria and outside the country. Warri Wolves mourn him and we appeal to 3SC and the family of the deceased to take heart as God in his infinite mercy is always willing to listen to their cries for help,” Etu said.

    Meanwhile, Warri Wolves have stated that there won’t be any hiding place for Akwa United who visit the Warri Township Stadium on Saturday in Glo Premier League Matchday 36 tie.

    Etu stressed that the Seasiders would be aiming to add to the woes of the Uyo boys in their own bid to get a place on the continent.

    Wolves are fifth on the log with 52 points from 35 matches while Akwa United are 19th with 44 points from same number of matches.

  • Makinde, Kalu, Sosan, Belgore, Dabiri condole with Lagos governor

    Methodist Church Prelate Dr. Sunday Makinde, ex-Abia State Governor Orji Uzor Kalu, former Lagos State Deputy Governor Sarah Sosan and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in Kwara State, Dele Belgore, have condoled with Governor Babatunde Fashola on the death of his father, Pa Ademola Fashola.

    Also, House of Representatives members Abike Dabiri, Lanre Odubote and former Lagos State Polytechnic Rector, Mr. Olawumi Gasper, commiserated with him.

    Lagos State Commissioner for Housing, Bosun Jeje and Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Lateef Raji, thanked the Almighty Allah for the life of the deceased. They prayed for the repose of his soul.

    Dabiri said: “He was a great father, who put his children on the path of hard work. He brought them up to have faith in God. He was a father to many of us, giving us words of wisdom and advice. No doubt, he died a fulfilled man. May his soul rest in peace.”

    Kalu, in a statement by his media aide, Oyekunle Oyewumi, said Fashola would miss his father’s advice. He prayed for the repose of his soul.

    Gasper, an engineer, said Lagos State enjoyed the greatest gift from the deceased through the performance of his son as a model governor held in high esteem nationwide.

    He said the professional status and public acts of Governor Fashola attested to his fine upbringing by a disciplined father, who did not spare the rod to spoil the child.

    Gasper added: “The death of Pa Fashola is a great loss to many of us in Lagos State. He is being mourned for his good work as a father, a mentor and a role model. Many parents pray to be like him because he lived a fulfilled life and was survived by good children, who have affected the society in a positive manner.”

    Mrs. Sosan said: “We have lost a true, honest, steadfast, committed and an elder statesman worthy of respect.”

    Belgore (SAN) sympathised with his learned friend, Governor Fashola (SAN), urging him to seek solace that his father did not depart without a memorial.

    He said his success as a governor translated into success for the deceased in his old age.

    Belgore added: “Pa Fashola’s life is worthy of celebration. I pray for the repose of his soul.”
