  • Boroffice condoles with Owo indigenes over Olowo’s demise

    The lawmaker representing Ondo North senatorial district, Prof. Ajayi Boroffice has condoled the people of Owo kingdom over the demise of Olowo of Owo, Oba Folagbade Olateru Olagbegi.

    In a press statement signed by his press secretary, Kayode Fakuyi, Boroffice described the demise of the monarch as huge loss to humanity.

    It said; “On behalf of my family and the people of Ondo North senatorial district, I commiserate with the Olagbegi Royal family, the Olowo-In-Council and the people of Owo kingdom over the demise of Olowo of Owo, Oba Folagbade Olateru Olagbegi.

    “During his reign, Owo Kingdom experienced significant development. His contributions to the growth and stability of his Kingdom and beyond are immeasurable.

    “Kabiyesi was a cosmopolitan monarch, respected educationalist, bridge builder, lover of peace and community leader. Kabiyesi will be sorely missed.”

    Manchester United, British High Commission offer condolences over death of Nigerian fans

    Manchester United and the British High Commission have sent their sympathies after Nigerian football fans were electrocuted while watching Manchester United play on Thursday night.

    The police confirmed that  seven  fans were killed while watching the Europa League game between United and Anderlecht in Calabar.

    United sent their condolences, tweeting: “Our thoughts go out to the United fans, their friends and families affected by the tragedy in Calabar, Nigeria, yesterday (Thursday).”

    Police said a cable had fallen on the crowd at a viewing centre, after a problem with the centre’s electrical transformer.

    “Around 10 pm, we were called that an incident had happened, so immediately, our men went there,” the police said in a statement.

    “Until this morning, we have about seven persons dead. We have 10 that have been admitted in hospital and another one in intensive care.

    “According to the information we gathered, the high tension electric cable that was very close to the viewing centre fell on the building.”

    A witness said  he had been one of the first to escape after realising there was a problem.

    He said: “I was sitting at the front seats when I saw the reflection from the transformer.

    “I was the first person to run outside. Everybody was running to go out from the door.”

    The British High Commission in Nigeria said: “Our deepest sympathy for the loss of lives in Calabar during a Europa League football match between Manchester United and Anderlecht.”

    Electricity firm probes incident

    The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) yesterday  commiserated with families and friends of the victims of Thursday’s electrocution  at a football viewing centre in Calabar.

    Mr Kingsley Achife, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the company, sympathised with those who sustained injuries during the incident.

    He expressed regret  over the incident, saying the affected feeder had been isolated to ensure that lives and property are secured in the area.

    An investigation team, according to him, has been constituted with a view to finding out the remote and immediate causes of the accident.

    “Our heartfelt condolences go to the bereaved families. May God give the families the courage to bear the loss,” he said in a statement signed by the Head, Corporate communications of PHEDC,Mr. John Onyi.

    He asked  residents of the area to remain calm, law abiding and accord the investigation team the necessary support.

    Achife commended the law enforcement agencies that responded quickly and ensured that that the victims were taken to the hospital.

    He urged electricity consumers to always adhere to safety rules by not erecting any structure under high tension lines.

    Condolences for murdered woman preacher

    The chairman of Bwari area council, Musa Dikko has visited the family of late Eunice Elisha, a deaconess at the Divine Touch Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, who was murdered while preaching at the Pipeline area of Kubwa.

    Speaking during the visit, the chairman of the council, stated that although, he had visited the family earlier on, he decided to pay another visit, together with the security team of the council, so as to reintegrate the team’s determination in bringing the perpetrators to justice.

    “I was here with some security personnel’s under the directive of the Minister of FCT, Bello Mohammed. The council security team and I, are here again to condole with the family over what happened.

    “We condemned in totality the barbaric act. Nobody is happy about it and I promise you that we will get those who committed this evil act,” he said.

    While condoling with the family of the deceased, Dikko revealed that the council have taken serious security measures, in order to further protect the lives and property of people in the council.

    “I want to assure every body of the council that the government and security agents are not sleeping until this is solved. We have also met with traditional and religious leaders in the council, because they have a big role to play,” he said.

    Responding, the husband of the murdered woman, Pastor Olawale Elisha expressed gratitude to the chairman for his visit, adding that the overwhelming support of people have brought peace for the family.

    “Bwari area council is my home. I have lived here for quite some time and my wife was well known. She was called Madam Bazango. She was well loved. The chief of this area came to condole with us too.

    “Many people, including Muslims were here crying. She died as a martyr. As it is God’s will for her to die like this, I give God the praise. I pray that her death will preach to us to maximise our day here on earth and to surrender to God.

    “Let her death preach love to us. I know and believe that we are not alone. When you know that people are supporting you, you have peace. I pray God help us to fulfil our destiny,” she said.

    Also speaking, the new DPO of Kubwa, Fatima Gimbi promised the Elisha’s family that the security forces were doing everything it could to see that the perpetrators were brought to book.

    Buhari consoles Adefuye’s wife, family

    President Muhammadu Buhari has described the late Nigerian Ambassador to the United States as a patriot whose contributions to the interest of Nigeria were considerable.

    In a statement issued on Sunday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, President Buhari said he was shocked by the death of the diplomat.

    Buhari, who spoke on telephone on Saturday with the wife of the late envoy, who is still in the United States, recalled that the late Ambassador Adefuye had contributed immensely to making his official engagement in the United States of America fruitful and successful.

    He noted that Mr. Adefuye was in attendance at all his engagements during the July official visit to the U.S.

    President Buhari maintained that he was proud to encounter such an ardently patriotic diplomat, who put higher national interest above partisan loyalty.

    He called on Nigerian leaders to emulate his fine virtues.

    He prayed to God to grant the deceased eternal rest in peace, and give his family the fortitude to bear the great and irreparable loss of a noted public officer.
