  • College pioneer graduates counselled on conduct

Pioneer graduands of the Divine Blessing Bible College and Seminary (DBBCS) of the Cherubim and Seraphim Movement Church, Alagbado, Lagos, have been reminded of their role as ambassadors of the college.

They are, therefore, urged to carry themselves with poise.

The institution’s Rector Mrs. Olufunmilayo Odeyinka, gave the advice during the maiden graduation of 30 students of the institution, which held at the church main auditorium.

Presenting scrolls graduands for the awards of Certificate in Theology , Odeyinkacongratulated the recipients on choosing the right path to serve God.

“To achieve great success as ministers of God, you need to be diligent in your daily Bible study and research, live the word of God to the letter, as well as pursue continuous self-improvement,” Odeyinka said.

Mrs Odeyinka, urged the graduands to be loyal stewards of Jesus Christ, saying they should be active in evangelism and soul winning, and focused on doing God’s will.

The Grand Patron of the college Mr. Remi Awode, recalled how the institution was established last year to offer sound understanding of the scripture, which according to him, is the sword of the spirit needed in populating God’s kingdom.

“Excellence in academic cannot be achieved without paying for it, Awode said, adding: “This you have done and today we are celebrating you after the rigorous experience and toiling.’’

Awode praised the teaching and non-teaching workers for what he described as their efforts in providing knowledge and skills required in ensuring that institution produced its first fruits.

The high points of the ceremony was the presentation of certificates, prizes to the best graduand, and gifts to some lecturers for their efficient service delivery.

In his graduation message, the Dean of Academics, C.A.C. Bible College and Seminary, Idimu, Lagos Pastor Shallom Olayinka, described the pioneer set as ‘eagles being released to spread the gospel.’

“As a mouthpiece of Jesus Christ, you should be careful about the way you use your life and spend your time, because a new role is a calling, which you should not do in your own way, but in the light of truth,” Olayinka advised.

    ‘INEC ‘ll conduct credible poll’

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the  police yesterdaysaid that adequate logistic and security arrangements have been put in place for prospective voters to exercise their civic duties.

The assurance, according to Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Pres, Prof. Mahmud Yakubu,  was given at the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security meeting held at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Oyekanmi in statement said: “The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chris Ezike,s said about 22,603 policemen will be deployed for the election. This is aside from several officers to be contributed by other security agencies.

“The Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr. Sam Olumekun, said the total number of registered voters in the state at the moment stood at 1,925,105. According to him, the state has 18 local governments areas, six of which are riverine in nature. The state has 192 Wards, 2,627 Polling Units and 4,011 Voting points.”

Prof. Yakubu, who chaired the meeting, commended the Police for putting a robust security arrangement in place. “If we can implement what you have on paper and presented to us at this meeting,” he observed, “then we can all look forward to a successful outing in Edo.”

In accordance with Section 46 of the Electoral Act (as amended), the public was served with the notice of the election on June 1, while the notice of polls was published on August 27. The distribution of the old Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) was done simultaneously with the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise between June 22 and 26, while distribution is continuing at the local government offices. • ‘Jega may not conduct credible polls’

‘Jega may not conduct credible polls’

THE Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), Lagos State chapter has said that the Chairman, of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, may not conduct  free and fair elections in 2015.

The group made this known in a press statement signed by its Chairman, Hon. Akionla Obadia, following the assessment of the  Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) distribution in 11 local governments.

“What borders us is the lacklustre performance of the INEC, knowing well that Lagos is one of the most populous states, based on population registration. Therefore, they ought to have prepared for this important exercise. For the INEC to have come with kids gloves to face the enormous population of Lagos State is a disaster.

“A visit to Mushin, Ajeromi Ifelodun, Badagry and Ikeja local governments as a text case is a clear manifestation of the INEC’s unpreparedness for a free and fair election in 2015.”

Obadia lamented that the commission  has been caught in the web, adding that it has to  convince Nigerians that it is not backing  Dr Jonathan’s hidden agenda.

He added:  “We are confident that 2015 will roll out God’s agenda for Nigeria but INEC should not start complicating issues.

We, the CNPP in Lagos State therefore, appeal to the management of INEC to retrace their steps now and remember that Nigeria is larger than any minacious agenda.”

  • ‘Conduct Niger council polls now’

    ‘Conduct Niger council polls now’

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger State has condemned the inauguration of caretaker committees in the 25 local government areas.

In a statement yesterday by its Publicity Secretary, Jonathan Vatsa, the APC said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was “afraid” to conduct council elections.

It said the appointment of caretaker committees was not only “unconstitutional, but a naked show of impunity, a trademark that has become the identity of the PDP”.

The statement reads: “We view the excuse given by Governor Muazu Aliyu that the 2015 general elections are close as untenable and unacceptable. What is the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC) doing that it cannot conduct the election now? The councils have a three-year term, why should NSIEC abandon its constitutional responsibility? The electoral body, like the PDP government, has failed the people.”

APC likened the inauguration to “a jamboree”, saying it was a of the state’s scarce resources in the face of many unmet needs of the masses.

“Aliyu is afraid of holding local government elections for fear of defeat, hence the appointment of unconstitutional caretaker committees to continue to do his bidding and rig the 2015 general elections, but the chief servant should be told that he will meet his political waterloo at the polls, as the people have realised that the last seven-and-a-half years have been deceitful.

“APC is ready for local government elections and we demand that NSIEC conducts elections in the 274 wards and 25 local governments NOW.”

  • Conduct Bureau directs Fayemi, others to declare assets

Conduct Bureau directs Fayemi, others to declare assets

Director, Code of Conduct Bureau in Ekiti State, Mr. Akinfolarin Feyisola,  has directed Governor Kayode Fayemi to declare his “end of tenure assets” unfailingly before the expiration of his tenure.

Feyisola, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, said the directive also affected the outgoing deputy governor and other political office-holders.

He said all the affected public officers had been duly informed.

The bureau chief said it was mandatory for every political office-holderto declare their assets when coming and leaving office.

He added that defaulters would be dragged before the Code of Conduct Tribunal for contravening the law.

According to him, some of the officers had started collecting the assets declaration forms after receiving the reminder of the constitutional provision.

The director said the current closure of all courts in the state was a challenge for those who had filled their forms, but have nowhere to swear affidavit or do other court processes.

Feyisola advised those who are yet to collect or complete their assets forms to do so immediately, while awaiting the re-opening of the courts.

  • ‘INEC should conduct credible poll’

    ‘INEC should conduct credible poll’

Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Chief Tunde Temionu spoke with reporters on preparations by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the Osun State governorship election and how to ensure a credible poll.

WHAT is the chance of Governor Aregbesola in the governorship election?

If performance is the the main issue, then, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola  has no problem.  He has the support of the grassroots and the elite in Osun. Bu,t if it is going to be another election based on high-tech rigging, then, one must be very careful because it is not possible to be smarter than the person who laid ambush for you. So, if the election is free and fair, unlike what we witnessed in Ekiti, Aregbesola’s chance is bright.

It is commonplace for students or workers to ask for more incentives by way of protests or strikes. It is also an indication that the system is not static. Apart from likely political instigation, the students and workers in Osun State cannot honestly compare their present welfare situation with what Ogbeni Aregbesola inherited. His education reform is in the overall interest of the state. The school merger system, with three principals and a coordinating principal, is strictly for administrative purpose, and not  inspired by religion. It is only subjective critics who would never see anything good in his government.

They said that he brought contractors from Lagos. Lagos contractors are in all the state capitals.   Osun is not an exception. You will remember that Aregesola was the Lagos State Commissioner for Works and a political player, whose  leadership remains an enviable inspiration in Alimosho town and a symbol of leadership in Lagos State. So, most of his visitors from Lagos came for political consultations, not contracts.

After Osun, attention will shift to other Southwest states, especially Lagos…

First of all, I wish all the aspirants in the region the best of luck. And I also want to remind them that two persons cannot simultaneously occupy a vacant position. I also believe that ,as Nigerians, all the aspirants are eligible to aspire. In this circumstance therefore, destiny has a very important role to play. For example, Nigerians voted for MKO Abiola to become our President, but God said no. That should be enough lesson for us. Human beings conduct primaries, but God picks a governorship candidate.

These aspirants must accept the decision of the party and its leadership. The party’s governorship tickets is not meant for disloyal members. One thing that I am very sure of is that there will be party primaries. And that is where  aspirants will test their popularity at the party level. So, aspirants who have all it takes to win the primaries need not panic and should trust the ability of the party leadership to conduct free and fair primaries.

Some aspirants are spitting fire, saying that, if they are not given the  ticket, hell will be let loose.  What is your comment?

It is not possible for primaries to simultaneously favour all the aspirants. But, it is possible for some people or a mole to have won the contract to destroy the APC in Lagos State. Evidently, apart from Mr. Akinwumi Ambode and Mr. Tunde Fowler, other aspirants are beneficiaries of the party. They had one time or another enjoyed the blessing and support of the party leadership. By virtue of their positions, they are all leaders of the party. And as men of honour and stakeholders, who are fully aware that the party does not belong to one person or a group of persons, they are like people living in glass houses, who must not throw stones. Although you cannot take human beings for granted, they are all party loyalists and positive people who are not supposed to be thinking only of what the party can do for them, but what they also can do for the party.  I know some of them to an extent. Subjectively, by all standards, they are all qualified to be governor. For instance, I know Dr. Tola Kasali to be a reliable party builder in the East Senatorial District. No matter how smooth or rough the political situation might be, he can never be a party to the destruction of the APC. He loves the party. We both worked together with other senatorial leaders to nurture the party in the East for the past four years. Moreover, this is not his first attempt. Whichever way it happens this time, as a good Muslim, he will accept the will of Allah. He is not a violent person. I wish him well.

Dr. Leke Pitan is a self-satisfied person. He has never been identified with political violence or thuggery. As an elitist politician, it will take him only a short while to completely blend with the grassroots. Thereafter, the sky is his limit. Like other aspirants who have benefited from the party’s leadership style, all things being equal, he has the right to benefit again. But one thing I am sure of is, his medical consulting room cannot disappoint him. A good contestant must be propelled by variable outcomes. Should the worst happen, he is magnanimous enough to think of the other side of the coin. Moreover, clinical exigencies will not give him time for an unproductive project against the party.

    What about other aspirants?

The Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Adeyemi Ikuforiji, is a seasoned politician and the number three citizen of this state. By virtue of his position, he is a member of the party’s  apex caucus in the state. Should there be the need for the caucus to take a decision on any pending matter in the state, including the governorship race, he would certainly be a part of such a decision. He has that edge over other aspirants.

As an astute leader and principal stakeholder, his continuous and positive contributions to the political growth of the party in Lagos East will remain indelible in the senatorial archives. In a similar vein, his leadership qualities and administrative values are reflected in the state legislative accomplishment. As a pathfinder, and a lucky politician, he was the first Speaker to have contested elections in a sequence, from the east, and the west senatorial districts. That was seen as a special dispensation, not an imposition.

His administration also established the first Assembly Commission in Lagos State. All of these are clear proof of a builder. Notwithstanding, all of these notable achievements could not have been possible without the support of the party leadership. Above all, with all of these progressive inputs of his, and all he has gained from the party’s leadership style, he cannot destroy the house he built because of any odd reason.

Senator Bariyu Gbenga Asafa is a gentleman to the core. His constituency projects and support for the grassroots were an additional value to the achievement of the leadership of Lagos East. Destiny catapulted him as former permanent secretary of Lands to the political arena and he became the serving senator of the district.

The Commissioner for Works, Dr. Kadir Obafemi Hamzat, is another man that I have respect for. Although he is not a loud politician, he has a solid progressive political background.  The fact that his father, a  commissioner in Alhaji Jakande’s cabinet, and who is now the Oba Mufutau Hamzat, the Olu of Afoowa-Shagade, Ogun State, is also one of the most reliable pillars of APC in Lagos State.

Ambode is a special stuff. His financial expertise and technocracy add value to his eligibility. His twenty seven years as a professional accountant and his civil service career were grassroots oriented. So, by virtue of his job, he has been a non-registered practising politician for many years.  But, now that he is formally registered to practise politics, his political sophistication and broad grassroots coordination skills have taken aback those who did not see him as a politician before now, and made him formidable, and a challenge to his opponents.

  • Ekiti Assembly directs SIEC to conduct referendum on LCDAs’ creation

Ekiti State House of Assembly has directed the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) to conduct a referendum on the creation of 18 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).

At its plenary in Ado-Ekiti, it also sent the bill on the creation of the councils to its ad-hoc committee for further legislative action.

The motion was moved by the House Majority Leader Churchill Adedipe and seconded by Ogundele Folorunso.

Adedipe said the move to subject the LCDAs’ creation to a referendum was to be fair to all sides.

Ajibola Samuel, the only Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member in the House representing Ekiti East Constituency II, raised an objection to further discussion on the Councils’ creation because the matter was before the courts, citing Order 54 section 5 of the House Standing Order.

Deputy Speaker Orisalade Adetunji and Hon Ayodeji Odu said the House was unaware of any court case on the issue. The Speaker, Dr Adewale Omirin, agreed with the submissions of the two lawmakers and the motion was unanimously approved by members of the House.

The people of Igogo-Ekiti in Moba Local Government Area of Ekiti State were at the Assembly yesterday to oppose campaigns to  move the headquarters of the proposed Ero Local Council Development Area (LCDA) from the town.

The delegation led by the monarch of the town, Oba Sunday Adewumi, met with the Speaker.

According to the community, the government committee on LCDAs’ creation led by Justice Akin Ajakaye was right for choosing the town as the Ero headquarters.

The people of Ikun and Erinmope last week opposed the location of the headquartres in Igogo, saying the town did not request for the creation of Ero Local Government. With Onigogo at the parley were the Obasaoye of Isaoye, Oba Moses Bamisaye and Alaaye of Aaye Oja, Oba Samuel Olatoye, who also  supported the choice of Igogo as the headquarters of the proposed LCDA.

Oba Adewumi said the position of Oba James Aina, the Obaleo of Erinmope, that his town was the better choice being traditionally superior to Igogo and that the town had a first class traditional ruler was not a part of the conditions for the LCDAs’ creation Committee.

  • It’s a very irresponsible conduct, says  Fashola

It’s a very irresponsible conduct, says  Fashola

Governor  Babatunde Fashola  took  exception to the soldiers’ violence. He was disappointed that the soldiers who are paid from  public funds   could descend on buses that Lagosians are already complaining are inadequate to meet their  transportation needs.

The state Government,he said ,only recently  completed the rehabilitation of a  police barracks destroyed by soldiers in 2006. He said he would wait for formal report from the Brigade Commander  to enable the state government  take a decision on the development.

He said:”there is an allegation that someone who was not supposed to be on the BRT route was on it. As far I know, if something happens to you while you are conducting an unlawful act it is  a criminal offence.

“ But it is really disappointing  that public servants, and that is what soldiers are, paid with tax payer’s money, will act in a manner that is being  suggested.

“I am waiting for the  official report to let me know who played what role and what happened. And whether the Brigade Commander has been able to identify the people who committed the offence. If it turns out to be true, it will be a very irresponsible conduct, to put it very mildly.

“In 2006  soldiers stormed   the Area C Police Station. We have just managed to reconstruct it. If buses that citizens are complaining are  not enough are set ablaze, I do not know how setting ablaze buses recompense any injury that one may have suffered. I do not know how damaging public property is the restitution for  any injury that may have come. For now, the only thing that I can say to you is that when I get the full fact, I will address the residents, to let them know what happened and what the state action will be.

“I have been in touch with the Brigade commander, who assured  me  that he was managing the situation. Nothing I have here is verified, I am waiting for a  formal report before we can ventilate a position”.

  • ACF to Fed Govt: don’t allow Odimegwu to conduct 2016 census

ACF to Fed Govt: don’t allow Odimegwu to conduct 2016 census

The pan-northern socio-political organisation, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), yesterday urged the Federal Government not to allow the Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Chief Festus Odimegwu, to conduct the 2016 national census.

In a communiqué at the end of its National Working Committee (NWC) meeting in Kaduna, the forum said it was unacceptable for anybody to say past census figures were manipulated to favour the North.

Odimegwu was recently quoted as saying that the 2006 census figures were cooked up to favour the North, a statement that has drawn widespread criticisms and a query from the Federal Government.

The ACF communiqué, by its National Publicity Secretary, Anthony Sani, said: “The meeting noted with delight the query the Federal Government has issued Odimegwu for discrediting past census figures, considering the sensitive nature of the exercise not only in Nigeria but across the globe.

“While the ACF is not opposed to an improvement of management practices which could bring about acceptable census needed for planning of socio-economic and political development of the country, but submit that all past census exercises were manipulated in favour of a section of the country to the chagrin of the other sections may be understood but not acceptable.

“That is why the ACF appeals to the Federal Government to reconsider its decision to allow the 2016 census under the watch of Odimegwu, for obvious reasons.”

  • Commissioner counsels students on good conduct

Commissioner counsels students on good conduct

Indigenes of Ogun State in higher institutions of learning have been admonished to let the spirit of ‘omoluabi’ be their guiding principle wherever they find themselves.

In addition, they were enjoined to refrain from all acts that could tarnish the image of both their families and the state in general.

Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Barrister Segun Odubela gave the charge while receiving an award of “OSAN icon of nation building” from Oduduwa Student’s Association of Nigeria ‘OSAN’ in his office in Abeokuta.

The Commissioner, who noted that most vices now ravaging the country are usually perpetrated by the youths, advised the students to always remember the homes they left behind and be mindful of the company they keep. He added that the state government will continue to support students of the state in institutions of higher learning.

“Your welfare will remain sacrosanct in the life of the present administration. Governor Amosun holds education in high esteem. He will continue to do all that are necessary to make life worth while for you,” Odubela said.

Earlier in his address, the secretary general of OSAN, comrade Ayano Adeola described the commissioner as a distinguished leader whose contribution to the educational development in Ogun State cannot be over emphasised.

“It is gratifying to note that the sincere and nationalistic disposition of our amiable recipient in delivering his mandate to improve qualitative education, service delivery in the education sector, enlightenment, commitment, effectiveness, dedication, leadership and genuine service delivery for all has further endeared you to us,” he said

Meanwhile, Odubela has commended authorities of public secondary schools in the state for contributing to the smooth conduct of the second term unified examination ended recently.

The commissioner gave the commendation while performing symbolic presentation of results sheets to pupils attending public secondary schools in Abeokuta.

The commissioner, who noted that the unified examination has come to stay, urged parents and guardians to always monitor their wards, especially during the holidays.
