  • Conductor face phone theft charge

    The police yesterday arraigned a bus conductor, Daniel Annih, at an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a phone worth N5,000, belonging to a trader.

    Prosecutor Lucky Ihiehie said the complainant, Mulikatu Aderibigbe, reported the matter at the Ketu Police Station on December 3, at about 2:18pm.

    He said the complainant alleged that she dropped her phone in a friend’s shop at Ikosi, Ketu to charge.

    Ihiehie said the complainant alleged that the accused went into the shop on the pretext of buying bottled water and stole her phone.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate E. Kubeinje granted the accused N20,000 bail with one surety in the like sum.

    She adjourned till January 16.

    Truck driver, conductor escape lynching in Aba

    A truck driver and his conductor yesterday escaped being lynched by a mob after hitting a trader on the Aba-Owerri Road.

    The woman died in hospital.

    It was gathered that sympathisers took the woman to a private hospital, but she was rejected.

    According to sources, the situation would have degenerated into chaos, if not for  policemen and soldiers.

    The whereabouts of the driver and his conductor were unknown last night.

    An eyewitness, simply identified as Clement, said the deceased sold tomatoes at the Good Morning Market in Aba South.

    Clement said: “The accident happened around 5 am. The woman was trying to cross the road when the speeding trailer knocked her down. The driver ran away but sympathisers quickly rushed the woman to the hospital.”

    Unconfirmed reports said the driver and his assistant were taken to the Aba Command after police and soldiers calmed the situation.

    Police spokesman Geoffrey Ogbonna could not be reached for confirmation.

    Bus conductor bites off passenger’s lip

    A 25-year-old conductor, Tobi Ogunremi, who allegedly bit off a passenger’s lip and punched him on his face, was on Wednesday docked at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Ogunremi, who resides at No. 5, Idi-Orogbo St., Rabinyan, Ijoko, Lagos is facing a one-count charge of assault.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada, told court that the accused committed the offences on Dec.7 at Shyllon Junction, Ilupeju , a Lagos Suburb.
    Eruada said the accused physically assaulted Olowoye Adedayo, after he refused to give him his balance money and later threw it on the ground.

    “Adedayo sustained a mouth injury following the bite, as well as several punches he received from Ogunremi during an argument,” he told the court.

    Eruada said the offence contravened Section 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Magistrate, Mrs G.O. Anifowoshe, granted him bail in the sum of N20, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    He said the sureties should be gainfully employed and must show evidence of a two-year tax payment to the Lagos State Government, as part of the bail conditions.

    Anifowoshe adjourned the case until Jan. 17, 2018 for mention.

    Driver, conductor charged with stealing Seven-Up goods

    A driver employed by Seven-Up Bottling Company PLC yesterday appeared at an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for alleged theft of 10 pallets of the company’s products worth N1.6 million.

    The 34-year-old driver – Phillip Nwachukwu – was charged along his conductor, 28-year-old Isaac Samson.

    The accused persons live in Ikorodu, Lagos and are being tried for conspiracy and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Clifford Ogu, told the court that the employees committed the offences on September 25 in Oregun, Ikeja.

    He said the accused were asked to deliver the pallets to a customer.

    “The accused diverted the goods, but were caught at the point of selling them.

    “They were handed over to the police,” Ogu alleged.

    He said the offences contravened sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (revised).

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Taiwo Akanni, granted each of them N200,000 bail with two sureties.

    She adjourned the case till November 22 for mention.

  • Driver, conductor strip selves naked in Oyingbo

    A commercial driver and his conductor on Tuesday stripped themselves naked in order to protest their arrest by two policemen in Oyingbo in the Lagos Mainland Local Government Area of Lagos State.

    The driver, who committed a traffic offence, and the conductor, who had earlier abused the policemen, passionately begged the law-enforcement agents who insisted on taking them to their station.

    The onlookers and passers-by joined the two culprits in pleading with the policemen who vowed to make them suffer for their offences because, according to them, they had warned the driver and his conductor to desist from breaking traffic rules and using foul language when talking to them.

    When the offenders sensed that the policemen would not listen to their impassioned and tearful pleas and those of the onlookers and passers-by, they went berserk and removed their dresses.

    These actions provoked an uproar. While the commotion was on, the policemen and the culprits were being blamed for their actions by the people watching.

    Ultimately, one of the policemen said: “Lunatics, leave this place,” waving a hand towards some people.

    Boat conductor ‘kills’ passenger’s brother

    The police have launched a manhunt for a boat conductor, Kole Adebayo, over the death of Abiona Ajisefinni at Igbogun village in Lekki Local Council Development Area of Lagos State on February 15.

    Last Friday, the police arrested the community’s Baale, Adekunle Onileiyan, but granted him bail to enable him produce the suspect.

    It was gathered that Adebayo’s father, a boat operator, was billed to attend a meeting at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) Panti, Yaba, but did not show up.

    His absence was said to have prompted the arrest of the Baale who came to represent him.

    According to sources, Adebayo stabbed the deceased with a sharp object while working as a conductor aboard his father’s boat.

    It was gathered that the suspect had a disagreement with the late Ajisefinni’s sister, Abosede, who was a passenger on the boat.

    The Nation learnt that Adebayo plucked some bananas from the bunch Abosede bought in the market, leading to quarrel between them. It was learnt that the argument led to a fight when they got to shore.

    The late Ajisefinni, who came to the waterfront to assist his sister with her load, sighted them fighting and rushed to her defence.

    Having settled the quarrel and scolded Adebayo for fighting with a woman, the late Ajisefinni carried his sister’s load and headed home.

    But unknown to him, the still enraged Adebayo allegedly pursued him stabbed him from behind.

    Adebayo was said to have fled the community with a friend, Asumo Giwa after the attack.

    A relative of the deceased who gave his name as Ahmed, said: “There was disagreement over payment for the banana because the boat conductor was just eating the banana the woman had bought for sale. In the course of the argument, Abosede told the conductor that she has his age mates as younger brothers at home and that one of them was around to assist her.

    “Immediately, the boat conductor heard younger  brother, he approached  Abiona Samuel Ajisefinni (deceased), who was assisting his sister to carry some goods and stabbed him in the neck with a spear. The boat conductor is a village tout but he worked with his father that day.

    “The deceased was rushed to Akodo General Hospital but died while in transit. The murder case was reported at Akodo Police Station but later transferred to SCIID Panti, Lagos Mainland. We are just pleading with the police to ensure justice is done. Our son should not die in vain.”

    Conductor pushes Insurance firm worker to death after hitting his car

    An insurance firm worker lost his life at the weekend while trying to stop a commercial bus driver(popularly known as Danfo) driver collided with his car.

    The Nation learnt that the Danfo driver hit the man’s car around Obanikoro Bus Stop and refused to stop.

    The man, who drove a grey colour Camry car marked LSR 612 DX, chased him and caught with him around Onigbongbo Bus Stop near Maryland.

    After sighting him, the Danfo driver, who had stopped to drop passengers, engaged the reverse gear and was about fleeing when the man ran after the car.

    It was gathered that as he tried to get hold of the bus, the bus conductor pushed him and he fell off before another oncoming commercial hit him.

    He was said to have died on the spot.

    An official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said the remains of the man were taken away by his colleagues, who were called after the incident.

    “They (the deceased’s colleagues) came with a Toyota Hilux marked FGN/NSITF and assisted by two policemen to take the body away around 8:20 in the morning,” he said.

    According to Ola Taiwo, who posted the picture on the social media, “the victim was chasing a commercial bus popularly known as Danfo that bashed his car when he was hit and killed by another oncoming Danfo.

    “This man died this (Friday) morning at Onigbongbo bus stop Maryland, a Danfo brushed his car, and this man left his car, removes his shoes and ran after the Danfo.

    “He tries to hold the bus but the conductor push him away and another Danfo coming hit him and that was the end. Look at the man lying down and his car beside him.  He works in a nearby office.”

  • Driver, conductor mobbed in Edo

    A tipper driver and his conductor, whose identities could not be established last night, have been burnt to death by a mob after the duo allegedly crushed three persons at Osholo village in Estako East Local Government of Edo State.

    Among the three victims was an expectant mother.

    Eyewitnesses said the tipper was heading towards Weppa community when it ran into a crowd, killing the three persons and injuring others.

    The witnesses said the driver and his conductor attempted to take the injured to a nearby hospital and carry the dead when residents mobbed them.

    The driver and the conductor were killed and thrown into their tipper, which the mob set ablaze.

    Peeved by the action of Osholo residents, people from Weppa, where the driver and conductor hail from, invaded Osholo and set some houses ablaze.

    Intervention by security agencies prevented the crisis from degenerating into a communal clash.

    Police Commissioner Chris Ejike, who confirmed the incident, said five persons died in the incident.

    He said a police team was drafted to the area to stop further destruction of property.

    Ejike described the killing of the driver and conductor as barbaric, adding that investigation into the incident was on.

  • Bus conductor remanded for alleged murder

    In Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos has remanded a 25-year old bus conductor, Idris Rilwan, for allegedly killing one Egunjobi Rotimi, 34.

    The defendant was said to have conspired with others to commit the offence. He was said to have shot Rotimi dead

    The incident occurred on February 16 during a fight between Rilwan and Rotimi at Abule-Oba Costain.

    The charge reads.”That you Idris Rilwan and others now at large on February 16 at about 11pm at Costain area of Lagos in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire to commit felony to wit murder and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 231 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

    “That you Idris Rilwan did unlawfully kill one Egunjobi Rotimi, 34, by shooting him with a gun and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos.”

    Prosecuting police Inspector Cousin Adam prayed the court to remand the defendant in prison custody pending legal advice from the office of Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

    The defence counsel, Mr Saka Bello, applied for the withdrawal of the charge against his client for want of “proper investigation”.

    Magistrate Nurudeen Layeni ordered that the defendant be remanded in Ikoyi prison pending legal advice from DPP’s office. He adjourned the matter to April 7.

  • Conductor remanded over alleged murder

    An Ebute Meta Cheif Magistrate’s  Court has remanded a 25-year-old conductor, Idris Rilwan,   alleged to have killed  one Egunjobi Rotimi, 34.

    The defendant, a native of Lagos, was said to have conspired with others now at large to unlawfully murder the deceased by shooting him with a gun.

    The incident was reported to have happened on 16th of February in the late hours during a fight between Idris’ version and the deceased at Abuleoba Constain.

    During the course of investigation, he was arrested and arraigned in court on a two-count charge of conspiracy and murder.

    The charge sheet reads.” That you ‘Idris Rilwan ‘m’ and others now at large, on the 16th day of February, 2015, at about 2300hrs, at Costain area of Lagos, in the Lagos magisterial district, did conspire amongst yourselves to commit felony to wit murder and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 231 of the criminal law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.

    “That you, Idris Rilwan ‘m’ and others now at large , on the same time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district did unlawfully kill one Egunjobi Rotimi ‘m’ aged 34 years by shooting him with a gun and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 221 of the criminal law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.”

    The prosecuting police, Inspector Cousin Adam, filed an application that the defendant be remanded in prisom custody pending legal advice from the office of the Directorate of Police Prosecution.

    The defence cousel, Mr Saka Bello, applied for the withdrawal of the charges against his client. He explained that the court should use its discretion, that proper investigation was not done.

    The presiding magistrate, Mr Nurudeen Layeni, ordered that the  defendant be remanded in Ikoyi prisons pending legal advice from DPP office and adjourned the case till 7th of April
