    Confederation is the solution

Former Governor of Ogun State, the late veteran Journalist Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo was a most vocal canvasser for a Confederation structure for Nigeria in those days. And in solid agreement with him were the likes of Elder statesman Chief Anthony Eromosele Enahoro, former Senate leader and Populist Dr Olusola Saraki, Chief Mbadiwe of the Timber and caliber fame, and Esaoke Orator the late Chief Bola Ige and several other distinguished as well as ordinary Nigerians who believed that the present wobbling structure was unwieldy and unsustainable.

The myriad of problems confronting the geopolitical space called Nigeria today could be traced to one single cause. It was a marriage that was not canvassed, not negotiated, not consented to that was the root, the father and mother of all the diseases that had plagued Nigeria since 1914. The diseases include consistently rigged Population Census, the basic fraudulent allocation of seats in the old federation, the fraudulent foundation of the country’s Military and the Police, and the inbuilt ingredients of sectional domination.

The listed diseases and their by-products gave birth to the military incursion in the country’s politics, coups and counter coups, avoidable tortuous and calamitous brutal war, the self-serving dubious balkanisation of the political space into unending states that have become a huge albatross on the financial resources of the country, the bigger fraud of 774 local governments, the collapse of the country’s infrastructure nation-wide, the plunder of the country’s huge assets including corporations like the Nigeria Airways, and the grinding poverty that has virtually consumed all the citizens of the land.

The diseases led to a complete loss of values and the humongous criminality that has enveloped the country. There is total distrust in the land. Fear, terrible fear of insecurity rules every heart and soul in the land. Horrible crimes like kidnapping for ransom and rituals, extremely violent and soulless robberies, highway gangsters, big frauds the likes that were never known in the land have all grown wings and have become alarmingly monstrous.

This is where we are as a country and as a people.

For trust and confidence to return to the land we have to go back to the drawing board. First and foremost is the need to seriously search our minds and then agree to continue to live together in a country called Nigeria. We must accept that the country is indivisible and indissoluble. It is after that all important agreement is freely entered into that we can open a chapter on how we want to live together.

We must secondly appreciate and respect our diversities in culture, tradition, religion, worldview, strengths and weaknesses and accept the cardinal principle that no culture is superior to another; no religion is superior to another and no individual or groups of individuals are superior to another group in a Union.

We should also be honest to admit that cost of governance in the dying Nigeria is nauseatingly outrageous. Our great leaders of the past when Nigeria ran a viable and peaceful Parliamentary system in a loose federation achieved numerous successes because they ran modest governments. The great Ahmadu Bello who successfully governed the North which now consists of 19 states plus Federal Capital Territory had less than 12 Ministers. He had only one Minister of Education. The balkanized North that succeeded his Administration now has 19 Ministers of Education! The same scenario goes for the great Nnamdi Azikiwe and Michael Okpara in the East and the Sage Obafemi Awolowo and Orator Samuel Akintola in the West.

Now we have motley of employees and political jobbers who drain the purse of the country by way of salaries, wages and emoluments. We do not need to enumerate the many areas of waste in our national governance structure which are well documented and well known to even a Vulcanizer next door.

What we should now do to douse the raging tension in the land is to first and foremost collapse the unviable states into SIX regions. Let each region be autonomous in all matters material. Each region should be free to decide how many states and how many local governments it can afford for the smooth and efficient running of their regions. Of course every region shall have its own Police and its own distinct Constitution.

The regions can then form a Confederation which will handle matters of External Defence and Security, National Currency and Fiscal Policy and Customs and Immigration. Every other matter is subject of each region’s decision. Transportation should be in the hands of both the Confederation and the regions.

The six regions will agree on Parliamentary form of government which is more transparent, less corrupt, and very accountable. The Head of the confederation shall be a Prime Minister while regions are governed by Premiers.

We must seriously prune down the cost of governance. The Confederal Union must be limited to 18 Ministers at the Centre, which are 3 per region. Details can be worked out by Constitutional Experts.

There is one big lamentation. Who will make this possible? The present crop of legislators in the country CANNOT make it. Unfortunately it was the Military that insidiously created our political mess since 1966; it encumbered the country with unviable states and local governments; imposed the seriously and irredeemably corrupt presidential system and created the huge disunity in the country. No civilian government has been able to create a state or alter political structure since creation of the Midwest in 1963.

    Who will bell the cat??

    •Giwa FC abandons game

Nasarawa United have qualified for CAF Confederation Cup following a 2-0 win over ten-man Giwa FC in the final match of the Glo Premier League match played at the Lafia Township Stadium on Sunday.

Nasarawa United thus secured the ticket ahead of Wikki Tourists FC of Bauchi who also defeated Kano Pillars 2-0 on superior goals deference.

Nasarawa United ended the season with 63 points with (+11) while Wikki Tourists secured 63 points with (+9).

Nasarawa United qualification was made possible due to Sunshine Stars’ failure to beat Enyimba FC in the final game on Sunday. Sunshine Stars were held to a scoreless draw at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos on Sunday.

The Akure Gunners needed to win the match to stand any chance of securing CAF Confederation Cup slot.

This is the second time the Nasarawa United will play in a continental tournament. The Lafia-based side played in the lucrative CAF Champions League in 2007 and almost got to the group stages of the competition.

Ugochukwu Leonard shot Nasarawa United into the lead in the 9th minute due to goalkeeper Olorunleke Ojo’s error. Phillip Auta compounded Giwa FC woes when he netted the second goal in what looks like a goal rush knowing full well that they needed more goals to achieve their dream.

Giwa FC player, Amos Gyang was sent off for slapping a ball boy while goalkeeper Olorunleke Ojo got his marching order for dissent.  Ojo was sent off for protesting Gyang’s card.

A ball boy was carried away from stadium in an ambulance after he was attacked by Amos Gyang .

The game was abandoned when Giwa FC staged a walk out after protesting the two red cards.

In a chat with SportingLife,Nasarawa United’s chairman, Isaac Danladi was full of praise for his players and technical crew as well as supporters of the club.

He said the club will wait for state government to announce the reward for the team’s qualification for continental football for the second time.

“This is exactly what happened in our game against Sharks. I hope LMC will give us our points like they did in the case of Sharks FC. It is too early to speculate what government will give the team. We are waiting for government.I congratulate our fans for their loyalty. I also thank our State Governor Umaru Al-Makura and Deputy Governor Silas Agara for their support to the team,” Danladi told SportingLife.

It was gathered that Nasarawa United supporters in their numbers in Lafia celebrated their team’s qualification for continental football into the wee hours of the day.

Baseball, Softball Confederation plead for Tokyo 2020 Games

The World Baseball and Softball Confederation (WBSC) said its forthcoming U-18 Baseball World Cup would help to unite the sport’s future stars ahead of Tokyo 2020 Games.

According to the `Insidethegames’, the tournament holding from August 28 to September 6 in Japan will feature top 12 teams likely to take part at the 2020 if the sport is included.

It noted that the WBSC claimed that baseball was the number one sport in Japan in terms of youth participation, infrastructure, media coverage and fan-following.

The statement said the event would give WBSC another opportunity to gauge public support in the country, ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Additional Event Programme Panel announcement, scheduled for September.

It said baseball and softball would be among the eight sports that presented their case for Olympic inclusion to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) panel in Japan earlier in the month.

The publication said the proposal was made by an 8- man delegation led by WBSC President, Riccardo Fraccari. According to the online portal, Fraccari said inclusion of baseball and softball will add more value to the Tokyo Games.

“Given our sport’s footprint in Japan and worldwide, WBSC hopes to show that staging baseball and softball in 2020 Olympics will be easily accommodated.

“The added value as well as the historic value would be a `home run’ for Tokyo 2020, the Olympic Movement and our sport,’’ it quoted Fraccari as saying.

The sport remains the favourite to win its case for inclusion after baseball was dropped from the Olympics after Beijing 2008 in China.

An unspecified number of sports will be proposed by Tokyo 2020 to the IOC in September, before a final decision at its Session in Rio de Janeiro in August 2016.

  • CONFEDERATION CUP Ticket sales ends May 15

CONFEDERATION CUP Ticket sales ends May 15

Nigerians and other fans wishing to watch Super Eagles and other teams in action when the Confederation Cup begins June 1 in Brazil, have just nine days left to acquire their tickets according to information dished out by world soccer ruling body FIFA.

The body confirmed that more than 588,178 tickets have been sold so far revealing that about 97% of the tickets have been purchased by Brazilians.

57,854 tickets according to the body have been sold to the general public for the opening match in Brasilia on June 15, Brazil v. Japan.

FIFA marketing director Thierry Weil however confirmed that 238,450 are still available for grabs. FIFA’s desire according to him is to “well exceed” the average capacity of 83% which was recorded for the Festival of Champions in 2005.

The Confederations Cup features four FIFA World Cup champions – Brazil, Italy, Spain and Uruguay – and continental champions Mexico, Japan, Nigeria and Tahiti.

The last remaining tickets will then be sold during the last-minute-sales phase both online via FIFA.com/ticketing and over the counter at one of the FIFA Venue Ticketing Centres in the six host cities, starting June 1.

Successful ticket buyers can collect their tickets at one of the ticketing centres from May 29, the day when FIFA unveils the design and special features of the Confederations Cup tickets.

“Due to delayed stadium deliveries, we are only now in the position to conduct the seat allocations in each of the venues,” said Thierry Weil.

“Yet we are very confident that we will break another record for the FIFA Confederations Cup, with the Brazilians providing the global TV audience with a glimpse of what kind of stadium atmosphere to expect in 2014: full stands and a great reception for all teams in return for football at its best on the pitch.”

Eagles campaigning in Group B alongside Tahiti, Spain and Uruguay will play their first match against Tahiti June 17 in Belo Horizonte.

  • Lobi Stars’ CAF Confederation ouster shocking-Adepoju

Lobi Stars’ CAF Confederation ouster shocking-Adepoju

Former Nigerian international and former general manager of 3SC FC of Ibadan, Mutiu Adepoju, has described the ouster of Lobi Stars of Markurdi from the ongoing CAF Confederation Cup as shocking.

Lobi Stars were defeated 7-1 in the return leg of the competition against Liga Muculmana of Mozambique on Friday in Maputo.

Adepoju said the goal margin did not depict the quality of a club like Lobi Stars. Lobi Stars won 3-1 in the first leg played at the Markurdi Stadium a fortnight ago.

“I am shocked at the goal margin; it’s not about losing or winning: but the score line is hard to believe for a club like Lobi, they are no pushovers in the league,” Adepoju said.

“Something must have gone terribly bad because it will be wrong to make assumptions, but one thing that is certain is that the fault is either from the team or from the officiating. It is sad, but whatever must have happened in Maputo, they could not withstand it,” Adepoju said.

Lobi is the first Nigerian club to be knocked out of the CAF Confederation Cup this season. The team is currently on the 12th position in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) with six points from four matches.
