  • Ikpeazu, Okorocha confirm death of Fulani herdsmen

Abia and Imo states’ governors Okezie Ikpeazu and Rochas Okorocha yesterday said some Fulani herdsmen were killed by kidnappers operating on the border between the two states.

The governor addressed reporters at the end of their joint security meeting at the Government House in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.

They expressed their readiness to combat kidnapping at their borders.

The meeting, which was attended by heads of security agencies from both states, including the Commander of 14 Brigade at Ohafia, Brig.-Gen. Lawrence Fejokwu; the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) for Zone 9, Yerima Fyarah and the Chairman of Southeast Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Eberechi Dick,

deliberated on the security situation in both states.

The Department of State Services (DSS) had accused the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) of killing the herdsmen, a claim the organisation vehemently denied and confirmed by the two governors.

Ikpeazu said the spate of kidnappings across the border of the sister-states was worrisome.

The governor noted that it was while committing the criminal activity that the herdsmen were killed.

He said: “We condemn the spate of kidnappings here, especially in relation to the five Fulani herdsmen abducted and murdered by criminals.”

Ikpeazu said the joint security meeting mapped out effective strategy to curb criminality in the two states, adding that criminals would no longer be allowed to attack in Imo and run to Abia, or vice versa.

The governor said security agencies in both states had been directed to destroy the forest at the border where the kidnappers used as their base.

Okorocha said he was in Abia with his team to see how both state governments could flush out criminals, who had been terrorising the residents.

The governor said the killing of the herdsmen had no ethnic colouration because it was not a direct attack on any ethnic group but the consequences of a criminal activity.

He noted that apart from the bodies of the five herdsmen, which were discovered in shallow graves, two other bodies of Igbo ethnic nationality were also found in some graves.

Okorocha said the border between the sister states were porous, adding that they had declared a joint security operation, which would extend to Enugu and Rivers states by involving the governors of those states.

The governor said he agreed with Ikpeazu that the homes of confirmed kidnappers would be demolished and their property recovered to put the criminals out of business.

He said: “The forest, where the kidnappers use as their operational base, must be dismantled urgently. This is how evil forest story starts; that’s how Sambisa started.”

  • Nigeria wait on CAF to confirm 2015 AYC ticket

Nigeria wait on CAF to confirm 2015 AYC ticket

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will wait on a final verdict from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to know if they have qualified for the 2015 AYC in Senegal.

The Flying Eagles walked over Lesotho in Kaduna on Saturday after the Southern African country failed to show up for the final AYC qualifier first leg.

Lesotho had expressed concerns over the outbreak of Ebola virus disease in Nigeria. The Nigeria U-20s will no longer break their training camp in Abuja until a final notice is received from CAF, according to team secretary Aliyu Auwal Ibrahim.

The team have, therefore, returned to Abuja from Kaduna, where Saturday’s match was to have been played.

CAF are expected to take a final decision on this match based on the reports of the match commissioner from Benin Republic and referees from Senegal, who were all in Kaduna.

The 2015 AYC will be staged by Senegal from March 8 with the top four teams winning berths to the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand.

  • NBBF/DStv confirm payment of All-Stars prize money

NBBF/DStv confirm payment of All-Stars prize money

The Nigeria Basketball Federation, NBBF and DStv, sponsors of the men’s Dstv Premier Basketball League have announced the payment of all prizes to players who participated in the All-Stars game decided September last year in Lagos .

According to a top official of the federation, the prize money was paid into the GTB Savings Account of the All-Stars Atlantic Coach, Ogoh Odaudu while that for winners in the Savannah Conference was paid into the Unity Bank account of the coach, Sani Ahmed.

The total prize money, the federation stated, amounted to N1,886,330 out of which N1 million went to the Atlantic All-Stars team while the Savannah Conference team got N500,000. The MVP got N250,000 while the rest went into other sundry payments including transport allowances.

In a statement released yesterday, the NBBF/DStv said that the delay in the payment was regrettable but was not done on purpose, stressing that the delay was caused by a hitch in the paper works with DStv and partly by some of the players who submitted air ticket stubs that had discrepancies which needed to be sorted out

“We have no doubt that DStv is determined to help basketball grow in Nigeria and therefore should be supported in achieving this goal,” the NBBF stated, adding that players should always see dialogue as the best option at resolving issues rather than going to the press.

On the issue of payment of musicians who entertained at the event, the NBBF disclosed that it was not responsible for their payment as insinuated in some quarters as it promised that plans have been concluded for a hitch free Pre-season on February 28 and the season’s opener on March 7, 2014.

Ghanaian defensive midfielder Seidu Abuu is back and playing with Dolphins again after some time out at the end of last football season.

Abuu left the club briefly at the end of the 2011/12 football season but returned to the fold during the week 9 transfer window which lasted for one week.

Other players who joined up with the team in the week 9 window are Osita Echendu who was also with the club in the 2011/12 window and Baker Ebimaowei who joined up from Nembe City.

Abuu has already played three games for the club since his return but says his most difficult match was last season in the CAF Champions League against Cotton Sport Garoua.

Fenerbahce confirm Yobo for Viktoria Plzen tie

Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo has been included in Fenerbahce’s 19-man squad for today’s Europa League round of 16 tie at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium.

Yobo, who was not listed by the Stpehen Keshi for Nigeria’s upcoming 2014 World Cup qualifying match against Kenya’s Harambee Stars on the March 23 at the U.J.Esuene Stadium, will be facing Viktoria Plzen in empty stands after UEFA rejected Fenerbahce’s appeal against playing in an empty stadium today because fans delayed an earlier closed door match by parachuting in fireworks.

UEFA says its appeals panel also upheld a threat to expel Fenerbahce from one season of European club competition during a two-year probationary period.

Fans fired flares into Sukru Saracoglu Stadium when they were barred from the Turkish club’s 1-0 win against BATE Borisov in the second leg of the last-32 match.

UEFA had previously charged Fenerbahce over fan disturbances at two other matches this season.

  • Court orders Army Chief to confirm sentence

Justice Uche Agomoh of the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, yesterday ordered the Chief of Army Staff to confirm the sentence of Adeosun Kazeem or release him from custody before April 29.

Justice Agomoh made the order sequel to a charge by Kazeem against the Army for sentencing him to 15 years imprisonment without confirmation.

Kazeem, a soldier attached to 82 Division, Bori Camp, Port Harcourt was reportedly found guilty of manslaughter after an orderly room trial and was sentenced three years ago.

The confirmation of his prison terms is yet to be released, despite his continuous incarceration in military custody.

In his affidavit presented in the court, through his lawyer, Ikenna Oba, Kazeem said the failure to confirm his sentence has infringed on his right to appeal the orderly room judgment.

He also noted that his continuous stay in the military custody for three years without his jail confirmation negates the provision of Section 148 (1) of the Armed Forces Act, which provides that “if an accused stays in custody for 60 days without confirmation, he should be released unconditionally pending whenever they are ready to renew.

“My client has been sentenced in the past three years without confirmation of his sentence, if he continues to remain in custody without confirmation his fundamental right has been infringed upon.”

However the defence counsel, Patrick Agada, objected, saying that his confirmation would soon be released.

He argued that the accused has already been sentenced for 15 years out of which he has served three years, adding that he has not served longer than he was sentenced.”

The judge adjourned the case till April 29 for ruling but said: “I wish to hear that the applicant has either been released or confirmed in the next adjourned date.”
