    Protests mar Kwara PDP congress

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) state congress in Kwara state was characterized with protests by aggrieved party members.

While a group wanted the incumbent executive of the party led by Akogun Iyiola Oyedepo to return unopposed, another group preferred voting to elect new leadership for the party.

The situation led to unnecessary delay in accreditation of delegates.

The irreconcilable differences led to non accreditation of delegates of delegates from Kwara central zone in the exercise that lasted till wee hours of Wednesday.

Disenchanted members of the party led by Senator Ayinla Folorunsho, vowed to resist affirmation being introduced by the incumbent state executive committee of the party.

They accused the state chairman of the party, Iyiola Oyedepo, of a plan to scuttle the process of injecting new blood into the executive of the party with his insistence affirmation instead of congress as directed by the national body of the party.

Addressing reporters Wednesday in Ilorin, Folorunsho warned that angry members of the party would not allow the congress to hold provided the incumbent executive insisted on affirmation.

He threatened that in the event that the state executive failed to conduct the congress, members of the party would be left with no option than to convey its grievances to the national headquarters of the party.

He said that “there is supposed to be PDP congress, and that is what is going on. But there is a mixture of things. The present executive wants to do affirmation. We members of the PDP want a congress. It is the congress that the national leadership of the party asked us to do, and all along, the state chairman has been saying that there would be no congress, that they are going to do affirmation. We members of the party are not going to allow affirmation but congress.
“It was the national body that announced that all states except Kogi, Edo and Ondo, all the rest including FCT must go for congresses.”

Also speaking, another member of the party, Dr Abdulganiyu Abdulbaki, said the current executive of the party wanted to perpetuate its impunity while members would not allow such to recur.

He called for the dissolution of the current executive of the party to pave the way for the emergence of new people with fresh ideas.

Abdulbaki also warned that things would not go down well with members of the party if the duly recognised list was not used at the congress.

Meanwhile, the state police command said it has arrested nine persons for alleged public disturbance during the congress.

  • Confusion as Anambra PDP holds parallel congresses

Confusion as Anambra PDP holds parallel congresses

It was confusion galore Tuesday at the marble Arch Hotels in Awka, Anambra state, when the faction of the people’s Democratic party PDP held its state congress.

But the other faction led by Chief Chris Uba at the Emmaus house was well organized without any form of rancour.

However, notable absentees during the exercise Tuesday were former Governor of the state, Chief Peter Obi and national publicity secretary of the party, Chief Olisa Metuh.

The confusion began at the hotel when one of the candidates presented a court order to the chairman of the group’s congress committee chairman, Hon Ladi Edun, disqualifying his opponents Mr Ngozi Agudosi and Emeka Small from the race.

Other positions were done by voice vote except the chairman, which returned Prince Ken Emeakayi as the chairman.

The marble arch congress was attended by some PDP chieftains such as Senators Andy Uba, Stella Oduah, the national Assembly lawmakers and other members

However, the congress conducted at the Emmaus house was attended by Senator Annie Okonkwo, Chief Chris Uba, Senator Ugochuwu Uba, former minister of transport, Prince John Emeka and state house of Assembly members.

The congress was conducted by Alhaji Abubarka Mallam( Shettima gwandu) with other members.

The Nation gathered that the PDP congress committee sent to the state divided itself to conduct the exercise

Speaking with reporters Tuesday after the congress, the chairman of the committee, Abubarka Mallam said they conducted the congress based on the constitution and guidelines of the PDP

For Annie Okonkwo and Prince John Emeka, there was no other committee except the one headed by Shettima Gwandu

After the congress, the chairman of the committee, declared Chief Ejike Oguebego as newly elected chairman, while, Edun declared Emeakayi winner of the congress also.

In their separate speeches, Oguebego and Emeakayi thanked members of their party for electing them, promising not to disappoint them.

Also, the two committee chairmen claimed being the authentic group sent to the state by the National leadership of the PDP.

  • Uba brothers, Oduah battle for Anambra PDP congress

As the Anambra State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) holds its state congress tomorrow, Chief Chris Uba and his elder brother, Senator Andy Uba, appeared to have renewed their battle for the control of the party.

Also, the senator representing Anambra North, Stella Oduah, is among the party’s top players in the quest to produce the state chairman in tomorrow’s congress.

It was gathered yesterday in Awka, the state capital, that PDP’s national body recognised the ward and local government congresses organised by the Chief Ejike Oguebego leadership.

The state congress will take place at the spacious Emmaus House in Awka with the chieftains battle-ready to produce the party’s executives.

PDP’s national body recently dissolved the executives in 33 states except in three others.

But the party’s crisis has not abated as two different committees monitored the congresses in the state during the ward and council congresses.

It was gathered that Alhaji Abubakar Mallam (Shettima Gwandu) was detailed for the Oguebego-led party’s congress in the state while Ladi Edun said he was posted by the party to Anambra State during the ward congress.

During the ward congress, there were no forms of fracas, as it used to be in the state because of factions.

Speaking with our reporter yesterday in Awka on the party’s preparedness, Oguebego said PDP members were ready to elect their executives.

He said the party’s Administrative Secretary was carrying everybody along.

The party’s big wigs, like Chief Chris Uba, his siblings – Senators Ugochukwu and Andy – were said to have arrived in the state ahead of the state congress.

Also, Oduah, who was Aviation Minister under former President Goodluck Jonathan; her successor in the ministry, Chief Osita Chidoka; a chieftain, Annie Okonkwo, among others, were also said to have arrived in the state.

Controversy mars PDP congress in Imo

•Udenwa, Ihedioha, Uzodinma battle for party’s structure

The ward congress of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State was marred yesterday by violence and controversy.

Loyalists of the various party leaders engaged in a shootout at the party’s secretariat in Owerri, the state capital, while the chairman of the congress and Abia State Deputy Governor Ude Okochukwu and other high-ranking members of the party escaped to a popular hotel, where the results were allegedly written.

The hotel, which is located near the Government House, was manned by heavily armed policemen, while PDP senators and other party leaders were in a closed-door meeting with Okochukwu.

The congress, which held across the country on Saturday, was postponed in the state to reconcile the warring factions.

It was learnt that the party’s faithful, who had gathered for the congress, were disappointed after waiting till evening without the electoral officials or materials.

A former governor, Chief Achike Udenwa, and former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha, were among those who waited at their wards to participate in the congress.

  • Edo PDP congresses: Youths mob three PDP leaders

Edo PDP congresses: Youths mob three PDP leaders

Former Chief Whip of the Nigeria Senate, Senator Roland Owie and two other leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party in Edo State were Friday mobbed and harassed by youths.

Senator Owie was raised high up and lifted out of the venue of a stakeholders meeting of the party ahead of Saturday’s Ward congresses.

Others harassed were Samson Esemuede and another simply identified Ijesurobo.

It took the intervention of a governorship candidate, Matthew Iduoriyekemwen before Senator Owie was allowed entry into the meeting venue.

Iduoriyekemwen locked the door and insisted that nobody would be allowed in if Senator Owie is refused entry.

The meeting however commenced at about 6pm .

Dr. Carol Ojugboh who addressed the meeting urged the Edo PDP leaders to work together if they want to defeat Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

Ojugboh noted that Governor Oshiomhole was not somebody to be underestimated in election matters.

He promised that the ward congresses would be free and fair and assured that election materials would be distributed early.

  • Southern Nigeria Peoples’ Congress meeting in Akure: The grapes are sour

A senior citizen in Ekiti State, Chief Deji Fasuan, criticises members of the Southern Nigeria Peoples’ Congress’ position on President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-graft war.

I was amused to see the report and picture of the nebulous body called Southern Nigeria Peoples’ Congress in some national papers of 26th August, 2015.  This fire brigade, self–serving organization exposes much of the Nigerian character; when we are having things our way we laugh and relax.  When things are slipping- by, we cry foul.  Going by the screaming headlines reporting the outcome of the meeting – “Anti-graft war, lopsided appointment; Gbonigi, Ekwueme, Clark, others slam Buhari,” the Conferees deserve some pity.

The crux of their grouse are political and senior management appointments hitherto made by the Buhari administration, observing that these appointments have not being fair (to whom they did not tell us), and asking Buhari to respect the configuration of the Nigerian polity.  Pray, when did the concept of Southern Nigeria Assembly start?

Obviously many things escaped the knowledge or memory of the participants especially those from the South West.  Have we, in the West, forgotten so easily our misfortune of the last five years when the federal government administered the country as if our Region was not part of it?

I have written on two occasion drawing attention of Nigerians to the apparent imbalance if not outright discrimination in the appointments to first and secondary levels of political positions and most importantly to executive and management positions in the MDAs especially the Agencies.  I told Nigerians that vital government positions in these sectors were lopsided in favour of the South South and South East.  I even posted the figures as follows – South South  and South East.  I even posted the figures as follows – South South and South East and 70% North  Central, North West and North East about 25 to 27% and South West just about 2%.  Was    there a Southern Assembly called to pontificate on this during those unfortunate years? Did anybody in the Northern zone gang together to accuse the South South and South East of foisting themselves on the Nigerian nation? Where were these do-gooders in Akure when the almighty Ayim Pius Ayim stood like a rock of Gibraltar against Yoruba interest? Are our Yoruba leaders aware that public service  appointments notably in the Ministry of Power and its agencies and indeed many other MDAs were still being rushed almost hours before the new administration took over? Did the Federal Character Commission blink an eye to these infractions? There are many more questions to answer.

Looking at the photograph in one of the papers of 26th August 2015, I observed that Bishop Gbonigi is a “fish out of water”.  A fish rightly belongs to water, but when it is on dry ground it becomes and uncomfortable being indeed!  The revered Bishop known for transparency and total commitment to equity and fairness shares very little with the likes of Edwin Clark, the super godfather of the last administration and all it’s stood for.  A pontiff of no mean order, he bestrew the Nigerian political administrative and economic firmament for close to 5 years. A colossus who shared fundamentals of life with Asari Dokubo including resource control and power conscription, he did not let go throughout the last 5 years. Most politicians of the South South and the South East regularly echoed these positions. One may asked, what is their grouse today? Indeed the grapes are sour!

Reading through the information contained in the write up, there are familiar names like Dr. Kunle Olajide, Chief Bode Ajewole, Chief Ebenezer Babatola and Prof. Olu Agbi, among others. For obvious reasons I don’t want to make any remark about these, but sufficient to say that the situation in Nigeria deserves a deep study. As for Kunle, my close associate and collaborator in Ekiti State, I wish he was not drafted to such a forum. Now to talk the fact, how many appointments has Buhari made to start making the inappropriate accusation of lopsidedness or unfairness?

I don’t remember in all my years when ‘Southern Nigerian Assembly’ took a sustainable position regarding the administration of Nigerian nation state. The involvement of the Ondo State Governor is not surprising. It is pursuance of his new found love – struggling for leadership in Nigeria. While I wish him goodluck in this legitimate pursuit, I want to remind the aggressive governor that he is a Westerner, a Yoruba man before he becomes anything or everything later.

I remember in the late 50’s and early 60’s that on the rare occasion that Azikiwe and Awolowo struck a deal on how to confront what they called the ‘Feudal North,’ the joint position usually changed barely 24 hours after the misguided accord. This was usually because the leader from the Eastern Region would not opt for collaboration with what was yesterday a feudal North, ‘in the national interest.’ Was Awolowo naïve all this time? At first he was trusting and later on he stood his ground for principles which he followed faithfully throughout his political career.  In fairness to Azikiwe, he was more pragmatic and realistic to know that Nigeria can never be ruled successfully with political affiliations horizontally but vertically.

The last five years taught us a lasting lesson. The Nigerian nation is a collection of nationalities and therefore of interests. Its administration must reflect this for us to survive and to male a mark on the continent.

  • Anambra PDP holds congress amidst protest

Anambra PDP holds congress amidst protest

The congresses of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) kicked off Tuesday amidst protest, as the party’s big wigs were absent from the exercise.

Though, some members trooped out in Umuokpu Awka, Otolo Nnewi, Ukpo in the three different local government areas in the state, some of the major stakeholders of the party boycotted the exercise.

The five-man congress committee panel of the PDP was led by Mr. Ike Abonyi, with Bolarinwa Oluwaseun, Hon Mahmoud Bichi, Nuah Babatunde as members, while Barr Ugo Uyawunne is the secretary.

However, some of the stakeholders of the party, led by comrade Tony Nwoye, Governorship candidate of the party in the state, told reporters Tuesday that if the National Working Committee (NWC) fails to shift the congress for at least five days, that they would explore other options.

Surrounded by over 50 stakeholders of the party while briefing the reporters, Nwoye, said 98 percent of PDP members in the state were not aware of the exercise, because of the public holidays, and that those aspiring for positions in the state party did not purchase forms.

According to him, “we challenge them to show us where they have published the names of those to conduct the congress as stipulates by the PDP guidelines.

“Our members should be set for the next line of action within few days, if this impunity by some members of the party is not reversed, our Senators in the party were not aware of what is going on in the state, the acting National chairman of the party, Uche Secondus had been notified.”

Nwoye, stated that it was an anathema for the publicity secretary of the party to sign an announcement for congress of the party, adding that it was the duty of the organising secretary.

“There is no congress going on anywhere in the state, Metuh has written names of his stooges because, he wants to become National organising secretary of the party in November, 2015.”

Others who equally spoke in that vein included, former deputy speaker of the state Assembly, Rt Hon Kelue Molokwu, former secretary to the state government, Hon Osy Ezenwa among others.

Nwoye, further said that the former vice president, Dr Alex Ekwueme would be notified on the decision of the stakeholders as it concerns the congress, being the founder of PDP in Nigeria.

“We do not want to give ultimatum to NWC, but the stakeholders will be meeting six hourly waiting for the final decision of the party, before we take our final decision on our next move in the next few days.”

However, the leader of the five-man congress committee of PDP, Mr. Ike Abonyi told reporters after visiting some centres in some of the words, that they were satisfied with the turnout of PDP members, adding that it had shown that Anambra was PDP state.

He said it was preparatory for the 2017 Governorship elections in the state, adding that the party was determined to take Anambra back to PDP.

Abonyi, further commended the party members for the peaceful manner the congresses had gone in ward 7, Umuokpu in Awka South Council Area, Otolo Nnewi ward 1 in Nnewi North Council Area, and Ukpo ward 1 in Dunukofia Council Area.

On the crisis and boycott of the congress by some stakeholders, Abonyi said that NWC approved the congress, adding that anybody who failed to participate should channel his or her grievances to the three man appeal committee of PDP or National Executive Council (NEC) of (PDP).

Following the way the congress was going in the state; former chairman of the party, Prince Ken Emeakayi, recontesting for the position is likely to emerge as the new chairman.

Meanwhile, the PDP congress was boycotted by the party’s big wigs including Senators Uche Ekwunife, Stella Oduah, Andy Uba, Chief Chris Uba, Chief Ifeanyi Ubah, Prince Arthur Ezeh, Sir Emeka Offor, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, Senator Joy Emodi, and Senator Ben Ndi Obi among others.

  • Anambra PDP congress holds

    Anambra PDP congress holds

The is tension as the ward, local government and state congresses of the Peoples Democratic Party in Anambra State begins today.

Various factions have emerged and this may likely thwart the exercise.

Stakeholders are accusing the National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, of fanning the renewed crisis by trying to impose the former chairman, Prince Ken Emeakayi.

In a statement in Awka, the stakeholders urged the National Working Committee (NWC) to postpone the congress to allow interested candidates obtain their forms.

They agreed that Option A4 should be used to allow for a credible election.

“We will resist any kangaroo congress through writing of lists and submitting same as that has been the bane of party progress in the state,” the group said.

But another group, led by Metuh, is accusing the All Progressives Congress (APC) of using the protesters to destabilise PDP in the state.

Addressing reporters at the weekend in Awka, Emeakayi said the PDP big wigs were pretending to be party members while they worked for the APC. He maintained that there was no crisis in the PDP, adding that the party was ready for today’s congress.

  • AFRIMA boss in S/A for AU congress

AFRIMA boss in S/A for AU congress

The Executive Producer of the All Africa Music Award (AFRIMA), Mike Dada will today,  speak to the community of musicians and enthusiasts, at the 4th Pan Africa Cultural Congress (PACC4) holding at the popular Sandton International Convention Centre, Johannesburg, South Africa.

The three-day event, which will be addressing the ‘Unity in Cultural Diversity for Africa’s Development’ as its theme, will have several speakers across Africa.

Mr. Dada will be presenting a paper on the AFRIMA Project, titled, ‘Creative Economy: From Policy to Practice’.

For AFRIMA, the congress is coming at the right time, as Dada and his team are preparing for its second edition of the award scheme, slated for November.

Having opened the 2015 edition to music entry submissions which will close on July 20, AFRIMA began a familiarisation tour of African musician communities around Africa in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, last month, where it also unveiled the agenda for this year’s programmes of event, in conjunction with the AUC. The South African congress platform is coming after the second leg of that familiarisation tour which held last week in Kampala, Uganda.

The purpose of the PACC4, according to the AUC, is to provide a platform for cultural experts, policy makers, private sector, civil society organizations working in the art, tourism and culture sector to take stock of the challenges and record good practices on harnessing cultural diversity to enhance policy development on the theme.

Expected at the event are Heads Of State and Ministers of Culture, Youth and Tourism as well as cultural enthusiasts.

The 4th Pan-Africa Cultural Congress is being organised in collaboration with the Department of Arts and Culture of the Republic of South Africa as part of the Africa Month Celebrations, which is aimed to foster the African Renaissance vision as encapsulated in the charter for African Cultural Renaissance and the African Union agenda for 2063.

The vision is similar, as AFRIMA, on the other hand, is driven by its mission of producing an international platform to celebrate the cultural heritage and values of Africa by rewarding up and coming as well as established talent and creating sustainable growth of the African music industry as a contributor to national and continental economies.

Excited by the invitation, Dada said: “I feel honoured by this opportunity to share with and address the Pan African Cultural Congress on the mission of AFRIMA of achieving a desired Africa where poverty is reduced and a new positive narrative is built through the instrumentality of music and creativity. This will only go a long way to spur us work harder in taking the AFRIMA project beyond Africa.”

He added that “AFRIMA is a continental music awards project that is conceptualised to reward music talents of Africa and also stimulate conversations on how the African music industry can contribute to the economies of African countries and create jobs towards reducing poverty on the continent.”
