Eubank, Benn set for September rematch

Chris Eubank and Conor Benn will battle it out again on September 20 after agreeing to a rematch to a contentious bout won by Eubank in April.

Over three decades on from when their fathers Chris Eubank Sr and Nigel Benn first fought, Eubank won by unanimous decision at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The same venue has been touted again to host the event, but promoter Eddie Hearn has suggested the 90,000 capacity Wembley as a possibility.

Hearn told Ring magazine: “Spurs is contracted – it’s a fantastic stadium and it worked extremely well the first time.

“Obviously, it was sold out and this fight’s even bigger, so you could possibly look at Wembley to increase the capacity.”

All three judges scored the contest 116-112, with neither man able to land the telling blow, as Benn suffered the first defeat of his professional career.

“Experience gained, lessons learned,” said Benn in a post on social media after the rematch was confirmed.

Eubank Sr defeated Nigel Benn in 1990 in a world middleweight title fight before a draw three years later.

The sons were scheduled to face each other in 2022 but the fight was cancelled because Benn failed two drugs tests.

Benn, who has denied intentional doping, was subsequently cleared to fight.

The long-awaited grudge match between Conor Benn and Chris Eubank Jr is set to finally take place in London in April after a delay of several years, it was announced.

What should have been an initial bout between the two British boxers in October 2022 was called off when Benn failed a voluntary drug test in fight week.

Benn’s two-year battle to clear his name saw his suspension lifted in November.

The 28-year-old took to Instagram on Wednesday to share photos of himself signing a contract with promoter Eddie Hearn and Saudi official Turki Alalshikh, along with the words: “Your Fate has been sealed! @chriseubankjr”.

Eubank Jr, 35, responded by posting the picture on his Instagram feed, with the message: “@conorbennofficial just signed his own death sentence.”

Benn will reportedly have to move up from welterweight to fight Eubank Jr, who has a professional record of 34 wins and three defeats, in what was previously billed as a “catchweight” fight.

Alalshikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia’s general entertainment authority, posted on X: “Eubank Jr vs. Benn done in April, London, by the name of (Fatal Fury City of the Wolves). Soon I will announce the day and the location.”

The bout has been promoted as a ‘second generation’ contest that saw the rivals’ fathers, Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank Sr, battle it out in two ferocious contests in the early 1990s.
