As a consequence of digital migration, it is clear that the number of households that require decoders will grow considerably.

Deputy CEO of TVC, Mr Lemi Olalemi, said, “While 100,000 might seem small when compared to the nationwide need, every little bit that can be done at this stage matters. The actions of TVC in making this bold step brings to the forefront the critical need to keep consumers aware of the implications of digital migration and make them aware that they have a choice in their selection of a pay-tv provider”.  He further said; “TVC is committed to transitioning Nigerians to digital TV with the distribution of CONSAT decoders.”

CEO of CONSAT, Mayo Okunola, said; “we are excited about the opportunity to work with TVC to distribute our set top boxes throughout Nigeria. It forms part of our strategy to contribute to Nigeria’s digital migration process by the provision of affordable digital television for everyone”. • To provide over 10 free channels for subscribers

To deepen the competition in the pay-TV market through cutting-edge content offering and better experience, a Nigerian-grown and owned business, Continental Satellite Limited, has unveiled a pay-TV brand, CONSAT. The market  has Dstv, StarTimes, Daarsat as players.

But the Chief Executive Officer, Continental Satellite Limited, Mr. Mayokun Okunola, while unveiling the CONSAT at a media parley in Lagos on Tuesday, said CONSAT was coming into the country to herald true pay-TV experience as countries migrate from analogue to digital broadcasting next year.

“Continental Satellite Limited, established in 2012, is a privately owned digital satellite television company with its headquarters in Lagos, Nigeria. The company launches the newest entrant into the pay-tv satellite service market in Nigeria under the brand name, CONSAT. As one of the most important entrants into the pay-TV market in Africa, CONSAT offers an affordable price and high quality channels for the rapidly growing, choice conscious African family homes. CONSAT aims to be the platform of choice by providing over 10 free channels for local and international content enabling customers to stay informed and be entertained,” says Okunola.

CONSAT offers MPEG4 digital compression technology broadcasting of over 50 channels with a view to reach over 100 channels in 2015. It also offers over 10 quality channels to the viewer’s even if their subscription lapses.

Okunola affirmed that the company is focused on ensuring the growth of the Nigerian entertainment industry by delivering the best in Nigerian culture, music, entertainment and lifestyle to a worldwide audience.

“We have invested in a telenovela channel through a third-party partner for the women who love novela entertainment. Our channels also include international news channels, home grown entertainment, State TV channels, and terrestrial channels,” he explained.

He said pay-TV will offer the middle-income, choice-conscious Nigeria family a new option that respect their desire for better content, quality pictures and true pay-TV experience.

To ensure that Nigeria’s pay-TV subscribers enjoy value for their money, Okunola noted that content is key. “Content is key to this industry. Our investment cannot be fully maximised if new providers are not able to air compelling and relevant content. It would be an unfair start. There is a prevalence of exclusivity that is steering this industry in the wrong direction.  These issues need to be discussed by the stakeholders; regulators and other content providers in the industry so that we can find an amicable solution. We need a fair start.”

CONSAT subscription price of N4000 is very competitive such that entertainment-loving Nigerian families can have access to it.

CONSAT provides Direct To Home (DTH) digital multi-channel television services to subscribers with access to multiple programming that transmits directly to subscribers’ homes or businesses via high-powered satellites.

CONSAT channels include News, Entertainment, Lifestyle, Sports, Movies, Music, Kids, Religion and indigenous channels.  The platform is home to some of the world’s most popular brands, including SKY News, FOX, Nickelodeon, MTV and Extreme Sports.

CONSAT will introduce new channel brands into the market that showcase the favorite programmes that viewers want to watch. The platform also plans to build and offer CONSAT branded channels with yet to be revealed unique proposition and world-class content.

“Nigerian’s have come to expect diversity in terms of what they watch and listen to. We are a nation that attracts the attention of people around the world; content providers like us are expected to provide the best in information and entertainment content that showcases why Nigeria is so important to the world. CONSAT will definitely resonate with viewers, especially working professionals seeking international exposure,” he said.

CONSAT management team brings forth a vast wealth of experience from the telecommunications and broadcasting industry that is invaluable to satellite services business.

High hopes as CONSAT launches in Lagos

In what could prove to be the battle for digital television service in Nigeria, Continental Satellite Limited (CSL) yesterday launched a new Pay-TV platform under the brand name, CONSAT.

The new entrant into the satellite television services will provide world class content at a fair price for Nigerians to facilitate true digital experience as Nigeria prepares to migrate from analog to digital broadcasting in 2015.

In a colourful ceremony to mark the launch of the product into the market, the Chief Executive Officer of CSL, Mayokun Okunola said CONSAT will become the satellite of choice for middle and low income earners in Nigeria. “We are operating from Nigeria, we have the cutting edge technology, we are affordable and we provide compelling content for our viewers,” he said.

Okunola said the age of a single company monopoly over digital television dictating what the viewers should see is over. He maintained that CONSAT will give Nigerians a choice and “value for investment” while also projecting Africa to the outside world positively.

“Monopoly is not going to be sustainable; Nigerians should have a choice of what they want to watch and where they want to watch it. Yesterday when Nigeria played, majority watched from viewing centers. But with CONSAT, you will soon be able to watch sports not hinged on only one provider.” He also hinted that CONSAT may bid for the exclusive rights to air the prestigious English Premier League. “We are improving everyday and adding more to our channels, we want to make a difference in the lives of the average Nigerian and we are not ruling out that option,” he added.

The Chief Executive Officer who has over 17 years experience in telecoms and satellite television warned competitors not to under estimate the new platform. “Don’t under estimate us, we cover the 36 states of Nigeria and offer compelling and exclusive national and international channels including 10 free channels which you can see when your subscription runs out. We are the platform of choice and we are just starting,” he declared.

CONSAT is starting with 55 channels which cut across News, Music, Sports, Religion, Documentary and Movies. According to Okunola, the platform is focused on increasing the number of channels available to 70 before the end of the year and over 100 channels by 2015.

“ We have invested in a telenovela channel through a third-party partner for the women who love novella entertainment. Our channels also include international news, home grown entertainment, State TV and terrestrial channels,” he said.

Reacting to why subscribers who are already on a particular PAY- TV platform should move to CONSAT, Okunola said content is key. He said the huge investment in the company will not be fully maximized if CONSAT does not air compelling and relevant content. Also reacting, the Director of Content, Addy Awofisayo said CONSAT is working with content providers to ensure that relevant African contents are provided for subscribers.

“Our content providers are very passionate, we plan on developing our own content. It is our mandate to air contents from Nigeria and take it across the world, we will continue to invest in content,” she said.

Also, the Chief Operating Officer of Continental Broadcasting Services, (CBS) a Sister Company to CONSAT, Mr. Lemi Olalemi said the debut of CONSAT has changed the dynamics of digital broadcasting in Nigeria.

“CONSAT is fully Nigerian owned and we are giving Africa a voice and telling the Nigerian story to the world. If you look at what other platforms are providing in news, it is directed either to the Middle-East, Europe or the United States. In CONSAT, you have TVC which is broadcasting through African eyes; soon there will be TVC, Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo. CONSAT gives you more value for money,” he said.

But more importantly, CONSAT said it has a role to play as Nigeria migrates from analog to digital broadcasting in 2015. “We feel strongly that we have a role to play in digital migration, when it begins in Nigeria. We want to offer a choice to the middle and low income earners in Nigeria,” Okunola said.

Also echoing this position, music producer and ace broadcaster, Kenny Ogungbe said the digital market has been thrown open. “According to statistics, there are 40 million television sets in Nigeria and DSTV has only three million subscribers. So what CONSAT is offering is a chance to join the digital platform so that instead of having a decrease in the number of television viewers, we will have an increase. There will be 70 million television sets, the future has opened, the migration has started,” he said.

For subscribers willing to take advantage of the new platform, CONSAT decoder comes at a discounted price of N14,999 with a two month free subscription and free installation.
