  • Abia lawmaker’s medical outreach thrills constituents

The 2019 edition of Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejiocha’s free medical mission in conjunction with a United States-based non-governmental organisation, Living Hope Medical Center, has brought health relief to the people of Isiukwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency in Abia State.

For Hon. Onyejiocha, who represents the constituency at the House of Representatives, funds the outreach every year.

The exercise comes up in June and July, a time of heavy rains, but beneficiaries who come from within and outside Umunneochi/Isiukwuato area, defy the wetness and head to Isuochi, venue of the outreach.

This year’s edition, the only Abia female lawmaker in the 9th National Assembly, brought 41 medical professionals in different medical fields who deployed their expertise to render medical assistance to the people.

To make their job more convenient, Hon. Onyejiocha acquired land where she erected a more conducive structure for the medical team to carry out their operation unlike when they were using a government healthcare centre that could barely accommodate the team members.

The medical doctors took their time to listen to the patients. Nurses checked the blood pressure of patients while pharmacists handed over drugs to patients, and optometrists issued glasses to those in need of them.

The doctors were in various rooms carrying out open corrective surgery on a good number of patients.

Some of the patients who came with tears amidst hopelessness after being examined by the doctors who treated and prescribed drugs for them, left with joy.

Some of them who spoke to our reporter said that they were excited with the level of attention that they received from the medical personnel.

According to them, the month of June and July when the programme usually holds, is a time that they anxiously wait for especially at a time in the country when access to healthcare of such quality is meant for only the rich or privileged members of the society.

In an interview, Onyejiocha said, “The reason for the health mission is that health is wealth. A lot of people here are people who can’t afford medical treatment for themselves and so, as the member representing the area, this is one way of giving back to the people that I represent.

“This is my personal fund. Even before I became a member of House of Reps, I have been doing this. I have done it for over 14 years. It has nothing to do with my position as member of House of Representatives. It has a lot to do with my passion for my people. it has a lot to do with identifying with the need of the people that have kept sending me back to the National Assembly. It is not a constituency project. The building that you are seeing here comes from my personal fund.

“At the start, I was partnering with local doctors. But since I came in contact with Living Hope, they have done much more than what we did in the past. They have done more surgeries than the local doctors have done.

“I am impressed because the quality of service is there, the dedication is there and they are doing more complex surgeries wityh the team of experts that they came with than what the local doctors have been able to do in a two days medical mission. That is why I keep partnering with them after we took off for the first time.

“They know that I do it every June. Some have started booking surgery for next year. I pray that God will keep me alive and healthy so that I will be able to do it much better than what we have this year. I wish I could have more doctors to see everybody. I wish I could have more doctors to see everybody.

“I wish I could have more doctors to go into some areas that they can’t do here because the medical facilities that we have on ground here cannot take care of. My prayer is that maybe in time to come, that God will continue to heal my people so that they don’t need to go through all these and even if they do need, that we will be able to provide the kind of facilities that will be able to take care of them.

“I have sent most of the referrers to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu, Federal Medical Center (FMC) and other places. I also assure them that I am going to take care of their medical bills. If they had done it here, I am not sure that it will cost me any extra money.

“My constituents know how much that I value their well being and that was why when I moved into APC, they weren’t looking at the party, but the person who is representing them. I am the party that they know.”

On what future plans she has for the medical mission, the former House Committee Chairman on Aviation said “That plan would be, but we have to put a lot of things into consideration. If you take a cursory look at health facilities around the state, one would not help, but try to get it bigger, bring in more equipments, get in more qualified doctors and make it permanent so that even when the expatriates leave, the local doctors will keep doing what they can do and the ones they can’t, they can refer to bigger teaching hospital. That’s the plan, but it depends on how much money that I will be able to save to do that.”

On insinuations that she was doing the medical mission for political reasons, the lawmaker said “I have seen so many people here who didn’t vote for me in the last election because they have their loyalty to other political parties. Apart from members of the APC who are here to either get treated or to render assistance in one way or the other, I have seen members of the PDP, APGA and SDP coming to get screened and attended to by the medical team. Will I tell them to go? I won’t do that. They are members of Isiukwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency that I represent at the Federal House of Representatives and whatever that comes from me to the people should be shared across board.

“Everyone has the right to vote for any person of his or her choice. And I can’t deny him or her opportunity to get treated because the person didn’t vote for me. The people that I represent must be in good health regardless of the political party that they belonged to.

“What political point would I want to score or achieve after my election few months ago? If I want to score political point, shouldn’t I have done this last year at the heat of the campaign period?

“What political point would I want to score after my swearing-in and inauguration? This date was fixed from last year, many people won’t do that. They would have preferred having this kind of programme during the campaign to win the sympathy of would be voters.

“What political point have I been scoring over 13 years ago that I will score today? For me, everything I do has nothing to do with politics. I have tried to remove politics from representation because you can’t be representing people and then, you are politicking with their lives.

“What point would I score that somebody is sick and the person is just waiting for another June to be treated? There is no point here to score.

“Even in my foundation, I made it clear that it is about representing the people. It is about giving back to the people who have worked for us and so, if I want to do politics, I will go to the field and I will put banners.

“If I want to score political point, I would have organized a Press Conference even before takeoff. For me, representation is about a covenant with the people and God. When it comes to politics, we play politics. But I warn politicians, those who come and get votes from people and run away from their responsibilities, that a time will come when no matter how much that they pay, they won’t get the vote because it is about the people who have the passion to represent the people and not how much that you have amassed for yourself.”

On what she feels about her mom’s gesture to the constituents, Chisom Onyejiocha said “I feel that what she is doing is very inspiring. Our people are suffering; our politicians aren’t doing the job that they are supposed to be doing.

“I think that my mum is one of the few people that actually cares about her people. For her to be doing this free medical care every year shows the much that she loves her constituents. People are going through a lot of things and for them to be healthy, the privileged ones should regularly be doing this kind of thing.

“I am happy that the people who are here leave here better than they came, I am however sad because of the crowd here is overwhelming. I am sure that this is not going to end after my mum leaves office as the Isiukwuato/Umunneochi representative. We, the children have to assist her and carry on this medical mission till everyone is able to afford healthcare.”

The leader of the medical team, Dr. Sonny Acho, the founder/President Living Hope Medical Center, said, “The organisation is based in the United States of America and we have been in existence for thirty years. Every year, we embark on medical mission to help our people ease the stress and suffering that they are passing through over the years because of their inability of having access to quality medical healthcare.

“This is the twelfth year of Hon. Nkeiru Onyejiocha partnering with us; Living Hope Mission to help her with her passion and vision. We share the same passion and I have known her for a very long time. When we saw her heart and what she wants to do for her constituents, it was easy for me to persuade my organization to partner with her.

“We did surgeries for hernias to lymphoma to cataract among others.  The ophthalmologists are screening people and are giving glasses. We have 41 doctors and nurses and pharmacists among other medical professionals in different medical disciplines that came with me.

“At Isiukwuato, we amputated someone’s leg that is so horrible which if we didn’t do, the guy may not have last for a longtime.

“For thirty years, I have been doing this kind of thing for thirty years. One of the things that we were a big challenge for us is the roads, they are horrible. It is one of the things that frustrate me. if the government can do something to fix them, then it will be easy to access the area.

“To come from Isiukwuato to Isuochi that shouldn’t take more than thirty minutes will take you about two hours and it is frustrating.

“Some of the people are frustrated because they don’t have money to go to the doctor. We are their only hope. That is why you will see them fighting and struggling to go and see the doctor so that their situations can be taken care of.

“If we go and they weren’t attended to, it means that they are going to wait till the next year. People are dying needlessly here. A situation that a visit to the doctor will take care of or a situation that $20 could take care of in the US, you see people dying for it. If you go into the operating room, you will situations that are very horrible.

“We have a lady that has been carrying lymphoma for several years, but it was taken out by her visit to this place. The woman, I am sure may not afford to pay for the surgery elsewhere because the least it could cost her getting the stuff removed should be around N350, 000.

“Cataract that can cost around N180, 000 in average Nigeria hospital were removed in less than twenty-thirty minutes here for free.

”We also discovered that people have suffered a particular health condition for so many years maybe because they don’t where to go or that they know where to go, but don’t have the money to get treated.

“In this area, there are cases of hernias, waist pains and joint aches, malaria and eye related issues are mainly what we have been treating here.

“There are about two huge fibroid cases that if we start getting into it now, it will take about three-four hours to get done with loss of blood. So, we are encouraging them to go to the nearest hospital and see if it could be done. But we know why they run to us, they have tried the hospitals, but the money to do it might be their challenge. Unfortunately, we don’t have the time.

“We noticed that people are struggling with finances; they don’t have the money to go treat themselves. It hurts me to see that I am situations that they could have taken care of but because they don’t have the money to get treated, they have to wait for us to come.

“You see people dying of situations that they could have get tested and treated almost immediately, but because they don’t have the money, they won’t be able to treat such until they come to a medical mission as this and some of them come when the situation may have grown bigger than what a mission like this can take care of.

“What we do when we have such cases is to send the patient to government or private hospital where it could be taken care of and what we do in most cases is to use our personal funds to pay for the person’s medical bills.

“We hope to bring in more specialists in the next edition. Knowing what are dealing with now, we hope to bring more doctors that can handle some of these situations and hopefully, the facility here that Hon. Onyejiocha has put up will become more functional.

“I hope that by next year, the building must have been remodeled to accommodate the type of treatment that we want to cover by next year. we are equally building a state-of-the-art laboratory in Isiukwuato for people to go and investigate before they can be treated.

“The Health Center that we have been using in the past for this medical mission here in Isuochi has been a horrible place to be, but with the current facility that Hon. Onyejiocha has been able to put up, we can have three surgery beds and our target for next year is to have about five surgery beds.

“One of the things that we have also discovered here is that HIV is so high. As we have been doing surgery, we have been so careful because there are lots of sexually transmitted issues in this area.”

  • Constituents host Ogun APC deputy governorship candidate

The Ogun State deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mrs. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, has been hosted by residents of Ota Ward 3 and other wards in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area.

  • Payback time as constituents pick senatorial candidates

It is the season of “one good turn deserves another” for some senators, who are back in their constituencies to renew their mandate ahead of next year’s National Assembly election. The Nation report that the parties’ primaries afford constituents to call the shots.

The rescheduled primaries to pick the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidates in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will hold today, the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) said yesterday through a statement by APC Acting National Publicity Secretary Yekini Nabena.

Also yesterday, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) announced its senatorial candidates after the conduct of the party’s senate primaries in some states.

But despite Nabena’s announcement, two factions of the APC in Delta State held parallel primaries and produced different candidates.

Ahead of today’s primaries, the APC released a list of the aspirants it cleared to feature in the exercise, which it said would hold in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The names of some applicants who appeared before the Senate Screening Committee were not included on the list.

The APC National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole had said the party would apply rewarding system to encourage elective office holders for their loyalty to the party, especially, when it was hit by a gale of defection.

Emerhor, Omo-Agege emerged from parallel primaries

    • Nwaoboshi, Urhoghide, Momoh gets PDP Delta tickets

Olorogun O’tega Emerhor emerged the winner of the primary organised by a faction for the Delta Central Senatorial District, in Ughelli, Ughelli North Local Government Area.

The other primary, expected to favour incumbent Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, was still being held at the Police Camp in DCS, Udu Local Government Area was still being held as at the time of filing this report.

In Edo South and Edo North senatorial districts, Matthew Urhoghide, Abubakar Momoh emerged as the candidates of the PDP.

If he wins the election next year, Urhoghide, will returning to the Red Chamber to represent the Edo South zone. Momoh, a former House of Representatives member will be upgrading from his Federal Constituency to represent the North Senatorial Zone, should the lection favour him next year.

Urhoghide, who was the sole aspirant at Image Garden, Government Reservation Area, Benin City, venue of the primary, garnered 891 yes votes.

Incumbent Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, representing Delta North Senatorial District won the PDP primary with 506 votes. He was trailed by Ned Nwoko (453 votes) and Paul Osajie (216 votes).

Olujimi, Faseyi, Adewale get PDP tickets

    • Protests in APC office over mode of primary

Senate Minority Leader Mrs. Biodun Olujimi, Senator Duro Faseyi and a former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) General Secretary Obafemi Adewale got the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) tickets yesterday.

Senator Olujimi will be flying the party’s flag for the Ekiti South Senatorial District, Faseyi was returned unopposed to fly the PDP ticket in the Ekiti North Zone and Adewale, who was former Attorney-General and Justice Commissioner will represent the PDP in the Central district.

Mrs. Olujimi was elected by affirmation by delegates from all the six local government areas that make up the senatorial district at a primary conducted yesterday in Ikere-Ekiti.

Party leaders and delegates from Ekiti Southwest, Ikere, Ise/Orun, Emure, Gbonyin and Ekiti East local government areas elected Mrs. Olujimi by voice vote.

But protest yesterday rocks the Ekiti APC Secretariat over the mode of primary being proposed by the party to pick its National Assembly candidates.

Aggrieved supporters of some of the aspirants marched on the party secretariat on Ikere-Ekiti road in Ado Ekiti over modalities for the primaries.

They berated the APC state executive committee for adopting indirect primary and not direct primary to choose candidates.

The party secretariat was cordoned off by the police, prevented the protesters from gaining access.

The protest was carried out by supporters of Osinkolu and House of Representatives aspirants- Bimbo Daramola, Kayode Babade, Pastor Yemi Olayinka and Mrs. Toyin Ajakaye.

A one-time senator, who is seeking the Ekiti North senatorial ticket, Senator Ayo Arise, announced his withdrawal from the race, for lack of confidence in indirect primary.

Other aspirants, Cyril Fasuyi, Dr Olusegun Osinkolu, Senator Olubunmi Adetunmbi, Sir Kayode Otitoju, Femi Ajepe and Bamisaiye will today battle to clinch the zone’s senatorial ticket.

However, Arise said he would remain a loyal party member and that he would mobilise support for President Muhammadu Buhari’s victory at next year’s election.

The protesters accused the Paul Omotoso-led APC executive of compromising the yet-to-be conducted primary by adopting indirect option instead of the direct modality mandated by the Adams Oshiomhole-led NWC.

The leadership of the APC in Ekiti explained that its adoption of indirect mode of primary was not aimed at scheming out any contestant as being alleged in some quarters.

Its spokesman Ade Ajayi condemned what he called a violent protest staged with the backing of some national assembly aspirants.

Logistics forces Oyo APC to shift primaries

Logistics yesterday forced the Oyo chapter of the APC to shift the conduct of the National Assembly in designated centres by 24 hours.

It was learnt that materials for the election were still being expected last night from the APC National Headquarters in Abuja.

In the race for the three senatorial slots are Top Governor Abiola Ajimobi and Fola Akinosun (South); Senator Teslim Folarin; Temitope Olatoye Sugar, Local Government & Chieftaincy Commissioner Bimbo Kolade (Central). The aspirant for the North Senatorial zone, Fatai Buhari, has no challenger.

In the opposition PDP, a chieftain of the party in Oyo Central, Bisi Ilaka was declared unopposed. Former Deputy Governor Azeem Gbolarumi and a former Information Commissioner Bayo Lawal are jostling for the Oyo South ticket.

A former House of Representatives Majority Leader Mrs Mulikat Akande Adeola will slug it out with businessman, Salawudeen for Oyo North ticket in today’s election.

Ex-governor Suswam gets PDP ticket unopposed

Former Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam has been returned unopposed as the PDP senatorial candidate for Benue Northeast Senatorial District.

Suswan went into Zone A primary as a sole candidate following the defection of Senator Barnabas Gemade from the PDP to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), two weeks ahead of the primaries.

Suswam, who took a shot at the Senate after bowing out of office in 2015, lost the senatorial to Gemade, who was forced out of the PDP to fly the APC ticket.

Ogola loses PDP primaries in Bayelsa

Delegates yesterday stopped the ambition of Senator Foster Ogola to return to the Senate on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The senator, representing Bayelsa West, was rejected by delegates, who voted for Works & Infrastructure Commissioner Lawrence Ewrudjakpor.

Senator Ben Murray-Bruce (Bayelsa East) on Monday said he will not be seeking re-election into the National Assembly.

Kano aspirant backs out of race

One of the APC aspirants for the Kano Central Senatorial district, Senator Basheer Garba Mohammed (a.k.a Lado) announced his withdrawal from the race and donated his campaign structure to President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

In a statement, the senator said he was withdrawing from the race based on the intervention of the Ganduje and as a mark of respect for the governor.

A former governor in the state, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, who recently returned to the party, is believed to be the party’s choice for the senatorial seat. He will now slug it out with Hajia Laila Buhari for the ticket.

Kalu, Haruna cleared to run in Abia, Kogi

The APC NWC yesterday cleared former Abia State Governor Orji Uzor Kalu and Yusuf A. Haruna to contest the party’s primaries for the Abia North and Kogi Central senatorial districts.

    Melaye wins Kogi West ticket

Senator Dino Melaye was yesterday affirmed as the PDP flag bearer for the Kogi West Senatorial District.

There were six contenders in the race. Four of them were not cleared by the party’s screening committee. The other two stepped down for Melaye, who recently defected from the APC.

Those who stepped down for Melaye were: former Local Government & Chieftaincy Affairs Commissioner Tolorunjuwon Faniyi and House of Representatives members representing Kabba/Bunu/ Ijumu Federal Constituency Tajudeen Yusuf.

Those who did not get the party’s nod were House of Representatives members Sunday Karimi (Yagba Federal Constituency); former acting Kogi State Governor Clarence Olafemi, Henry Ojuola and Ganiyu Salaudeen all from the Yagba Federal Constituency.

The primary was conducted at the Prestige Hotels in Kabba.

The Returning Officer for the exercise, Mr. Jude Sule said that Melaye scored all the delegates’ votes from the seven LGAs of Kogi West.

The exercise which was peaceful was monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security personnel.

Melaye after the exercise, said the affirmation was “Shocking but not surprising bearing in mind that he has represented the axis wonderfully at the upper champer of the national assembly.”

He however appealed to all other aspirants who might be aggrieved, to let go of their anger and join hands with him to rid the state and the country of the “bad governance of APC, both at the state and national level.”

At Idah, Kogi East, venue of the PDP senatorial primary for the district, tension was said to be high, where seven aspirants including the incumbent Senator Attai Aidoko contested the shadow primary.

As at the time of filing this report, the exercise was yet to commence, and it I’d believed it will be postponed.

Senator Ahmed Ogembe, was reportedly affirmed as the PDP flag bearer for the district, though conflicting reports had it that other aspirants were waiting for the election materials from the party headquarters in Abuja.

Ogembe is the serving senator representing Kogi East.

    Enugu East PDP inconclusive

The Returning Officer for the PDP primary in Enugu East Senatorial Zone, Abdulrahman Yunusa, declared the election inconclusive due to shortage of ballot papers.

Delegates from Enugu East, North, South, Isiuzo and Nkanu East concluded their voting while voting for delegates from Nkanu West Local Government Area, which incidentally was the host council, did not hold.

Yunusa, however, said that the polls of the remaining council area would be done early today.

“After the remaining one council polls tomorrow, I shall officially declare the winner of the primary for Enugu East Senatorial Zone and return the winner as the candidate of the PDP ahead of the general elections,’’ he added.

The contestants for the seat are incumbent senator Gil Nnaji, former Governor Chimaroke Nnamani, a lecturer at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Prof. Gab Agu, Prince Lawrence Eze, Chief David Nkwo and Chief Joshua Mba.

    Three Abia PDP senators emerge

Three Abia senators on the platform of the PDP yesterday clinched the party’s tickets for the 2019 general elections in the state.

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South) went through the crucible of a keenly-contested race to grab his ticket, his counterparts from Abia North and Abia Central, senators Mao Ohuabunwa and Theodore Orji, literally got theirs without stress.

Abaribe, who seeks to return to the Upper Chamber for the fourth tenure, polled 413 votes to defeat three other contestants.

The contestants included: Education Commissioner Prof Ikechi Mgboji, a former state lawmaker, Emeka Stanley and Chief Solomon Ogunji, an aide to Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu.

  • Constituents seek Abaribe’s release

Constituents of detained Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South), under the auspices of Obioma Ngwa Welfare Association, Abuja, have called for his release from detention of the Department of State Security (DSS).

Senator Abaribe (Abia South) was arrested for alleged deal in fire arms but the DSS are yet to officially say why Abaribe was arrested.

A statement, titled: “Appeal to the Department of State Service (DSS) for the Release of Distinguished Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Representing Abia South District in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”, appealed to the Director of DSS, Lawal Daura, to intervene.

The statement, signed by the chairman, Chief Achi Eric Egwuibe, reads: “We, the members of Obioma Ngwa Welfare Association, Abuja, a socio-cultural body made up of constituents of the detained Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, received with dismay the shocking news of his arrest and detention by the operatives of the Department of the State Service (DSS).

“We are shocked that three days after his detention, there are no concrete charges under the law against him.

“We, hereby, appeal to the Director-General of the DSS, Mr. Lawal Daura, to ensure Senator Abaribe’s immediate release.

“Indeed, he deserves his freedom being his fundamental human right as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).”

  • Omo-Agege’s constituents differ over attack

There was mixed reactions yesterday from leaders of thought in Delta Central Senatorial District which Senator Ovie Omo Agege, who is at the centre of the mace theft incident, represent.

The Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), the main socio-cultural organisation of the Urhobo, condemned the invasion of the senate and the purported role played by Omo Agege. But some well-placed Urhobo persons saw a plot to frame their kinsman.

Spokesman of the UPU, Chief Abel Oshevire, said the Urhobo nation did not send its senator to disturb the peace of the Senate.

He said Omo-Agege would only get the support of the UPU if he is able to prove he was not connected to the attack and the hijack of the mace.

But an Urhobo senior chief in Uvwie Kingdom and former Delta State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Chief Victor Otomiewo, said there was more to the incident at the Senate than ordinary. He wondered how the invader managed to sail through, with a perfect escape, without any resistance.

Stating the position of the UPU in Warri yesterday, Oshevire, a former spokesman to former Governor, James Ibori, said the Urhobo people are well-mannered and would never condone brigandage by anybody, adding that the UPU would support any action against its senator if he is proven to be linked to the incident.

“As far as the UPU is concerned in the first place, Ovie Omo-Agege is our senator, representing the Urhobo nation and we recognize him, no doubt about that, but the UPU as the umbrella body of the Urhobo people, we are strongly against what he has done, if indeed Ovie Omo-Agege is responsible for the attack on the hallowed chambers of the Senate.

“It amounts to indiscipline, it’s an act that is unbecoming of a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, we are not concerned about the person involved, we are concerned about the rule of law. The Urhobo people are a very disciplined people, we have respect for constituted authority, we are not know to be lawless or violent and we will at no time condone indiscipline or any misbehavior, irrespective of who is involved.

“If our senator is indeed involved, we condemn the act in its totality and we can never be part of such uncharitable attitude. Without reservation, the UPU condemns that dastardly act against the hallowed institution.

“However, if Ovie Omo-Agege can extricate himself from it, we will stand by him, but if he’s the mastermind, then we will not support him in anyway, but join the rest of Nigeria to condemn it and will ask that the law should take its course.

However, Chief Otomiewo wondered why nobody has been talking about the rather unusual ease with which those who took the mace operated, in a place that is supposedly under serious guard.

“I didn’t see him do anything, all I saw was that he came in and there was uproar and seemed to be disconnected from the whole thing, so what I’m reading in the media looks like a speculation. All I saw was that some persons ran, carried the mace, he was there as an onlooker. They are linking him to it probably because he was suspended.

“But what I want to ask and what you people are not asking; how come strangers entered the hallowed chambers of the Senate, did whatever they did and left. I have been to the Senate and House of Representatives, I know the security arrangements, it is not possible for a car to pass unauthorized into the place and unauthorized exit. It’ll merely take a phone call and the whole place will be sealed up. So how come they entered into the chambers, carried the mace, came out, entered their vehicles and drove away? No casualty, no arrest, nobody can tell you the number of the vehicle. I think there’s more to it than meet the eyes. I see ‘authority arrangement’ like Fela will say.”

“All I’ve seen is if the Senate can commit illegality, then any other person can also do the same. What are the senators going to tell the riotous youths in the Niger Delta and the Boko Haram when they themselves are not disciplined? I am assuming the position of ‘sidon

look’. It has happened before, it will happen again. Depending on which side of the political divide you are, but I’m not committed to any statement”, Otomiewo said.

  • 2019: Constituents reject Ben Bruce

The constituents of Senator Murray Ben-Bruce in Bayelsa East, yesterday said the ‘common sense’ senator did not deserve re-election in 2019.

The constituents lamented their alleged poor representation by Ben Bruce and asked him to forget politics and return to his entertainment business.

They, however, backed Nimi Barigha-Amange, who represented the district in the Sixth Senate.

They recalled that during Amange’s period, they had a robust and quality representation.

Rising from a stakeholders’ meeting in Nembe, Bayelsa, constituents, comprising John Thatcher, David Obodor, Afen Bright, Wilson Abel, Oscar Egberi, Jeff Afagha, Angela Ikokote, Rev. Ranami Afagha, and Atim Atim-King, among others, said Amange would be a worthy candidate.

In an address read by Abel, they urged the electorate to reject the years of suffering, cluelessness and ineffective senatorial representation.

The constituents said they would not accept an imposition of “faceless hawks” that had no link with the people they claimed to represent.

“A district blessed with wealth of inestimable value has nothing to show for it. Rather, the district is seen as the poorest of all the senatorial districts in the state. Our children will one day ask what happened to our oil and gas and the answer will be inexplicable.

“This is because of the non-performing senators picked to represent the district. Whatever we have in the district is through the benevolence of the government of Seriake Dickson, the indisputable leader of the Ijaw nation.

“It is pertinent to mention that the only highway linking Yenagoa, the state capital, with Nembe Local Government Area was facilitated by Dickson. The leaders, as well as the government of Bayersa State had single-handed fought for the re-location to the state of oil and gas companies to their operational headquarters.

“But the call has fallen on deaf ears because our senators never tried to add inputs into this demand. As we talk, taxes due the state are rather paid to Lagos and Abuja against our demands.”

They lamented that there were issues the senators that represented them after Amange would have handled, but they turned a blind eye.

“Despite billions of naira being appropriated for projects, for the past eight years, no single constituency had been located in Bayelsa East. Are we not worthy of one or two constituency projects?

“If they claim that we are wrong, let them point at a constituency project they have influenced to the district! Twon Brass, the citadel of Christianity is being washed away gradually by the atlantic ocean.

The community has cried out, calling for embankment. But the senators representing that district have failed to pursue the project for the people.

“They should also tell us how many appointments they have attracted to the people – none as we know. Even their personal relationship with the people is nothing to write home about. Another area our senators have failed the people is their non-commitment towards the realization of the Brass LNG, which had been in limbo for so long.”

  • Ekweremadu to constituents: don’t lose sleep over me

Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu has asked his constituents and supporters not to lose sleep over the Motion Ex-parte for assets forfeiture filed against him by the Special Presidential Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property.

Ekweremadu vowed that he could neither be intimidated nor silenced.

A statement by his media aide, Uche Anichukwu, said Ekweremadu spoke when the people of Mgbidi paid him a solidarity visit over his latest travails.

According to him, Ekweremadu told his Awgu constituents, led by the monarch, Igwe Pius Uzochukwu, that the latest allegations would fail like the previous ones as they were not founded on truth.

The statement reads: “I thank you for the show of solidarity. I have been inundated with calls, messages, and visits by concerned constituents and well-wishers within and outside the country. But, there is really nothing to worry about because the entire thing is a well-oiled propaganda on lies and doctored will that include fictitious properties, just to cow me.

“It is also about 2019 politics. However, I will not be cowed or relent in my efforts to serve you and the country. So, please sleep with your two eyes closed. Tell others too that there is nothing to worry about.

“I am also happy that more people, courageous and well-meaning men and women are speaking up on the state of the nation. Rest assured that I will not refrain from speaking up in defence of democracy.

“As I said a few weeks back, it is not about us who are privileged, but about the country and future generations. So, I can’t afford to be intimidated or distracted. Like the previous attempts to silence me, this one too shall fail.”

  • Constituents threaten to recall Ben Bruce for non performance

Constituents threaten to recall Ben Bruce for non performance

Constituents, mainly students, from the Bayelsa East Senatorial District, have threatened to recall the Senator representing them in the National Assembly, Mr. Ben Bruce.

The aggrieved constituents accused the “common sense” senator of neglecting them and having no plans for his constituency, which comprises Nembe, Brass and Ogbia local government areas, Bayelsa State.

Leaders of student bodies for the three local governments made their grievances known yesterday in a statement.

The statement was signed by Samuel Tari (Nembe), Ambrose Joseph (Brass) and Mark John (Ogbia).

They lamented that the senator was not in good relationship with his people and had continued to shy away from his constitutional responsibilities.

They cried out that the senator was donating relief materials to people in other states when his constituents were wallowing in poverty with many students unable to pay their fees.

Besides, they said since he was elected, Bruce had not visited his people.

They said: “Since Bruce became a senator, he has failed to look into the basic needs and challenges currently bedeviling the East Senatorial District, such as education, as most of our students cannot access good quality education.

“He has failed to attract a single project to the district in terms of infrastructures, roads and others. He has continuously and deliberately ignored efforts by the people to create a working relationship that will bring out purposeful leadership for our people.

“He is yet to fulfil any of his campaign promises; painfully, he is an Abuja-based senator. He refuses to visit his constituency, except only once when he visited his hometown and couldn’t even stay for up to four hours.

“Sincerely, we are tired, other places are enjoying the benefits that come from having a national representative. Our case has been a curse rather than a blessing. We are just like a district without a senator. This is why we are intended to change that narrative”.

The student leaders gave the senator a 10-day ultimatum, to amend his ways or face consistent protest and the recall process.

They asked the senator to organise a town hall meeting with his constituents and take out time to tour his constituency.

“We are, hereby, giving him an ultimatum of 10 days, starting from 21st August. If he fails to meet with us, we shall take our protest to the National Assembly.

“We will mobilise all the students, our mothers and our fathers. We will initiate his recall process. Our people deserve a better treatment from him. We request to have a town hall meeting.”

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream), Tayo Alasoadura, has donated thousands of naira to some indigenes of Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State.

Alasoadura, who is the senator representing Ondo Central in the National Assembly, said the gesture was part of activities marking his two years in office.

He said: “The disbursement is to enable the beneficiaries start small scale businesses, which will help them cater for their immediate families and reduce hunger.”

The senator recalled that last December, he distributed tricycles, grinding machines, motorcycles and sewing machines to residents of the senatorial district.

Alasoadura said he also provided six solar-powered boreholes in the six local government areas under the senatorial district in the last two years.

He said: “In addition, we provided five transformers to boost power supply in Akure South and Akure North local government areas.”

The former finance commissioner noted that the empowerment tools and cash would reduce suffering among his constituents.

According to him, the bad economy has become unbearable, though the Senate was working on how to use legislative actions to ameliorate the challenges of the people.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain promised quality representation and thanked his constituents for their support and loyalty.

The Owa of Idanre, Oba Frederick Aroloye Arubiefin, who was represented by his wife, Olori Morenike Aroloye, hailed the senator for his gesture.
