The program which is open to Secondary School students in Lagos will officially debut on June 20, 2018, at the Multi-Purpose Hall, EKO FM, Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos with schools vying for honors. Also, solo talents in music will be on stage to contest among themselves.

Executive Producer of the show/Chief Executive Officer, Entertainment Media Limited, Biodun Kupoluyi, explained that “the appalling trend of parading music illiterates as the elites of Nigerian music pushed us as an organization to birth this idea. The rich musical history that King Sunny Ade, Fela, Dan Maraya Jos, Bala Miller, IK Cairo, Ebenezer Obey, Osita Osadebe, Oliver De Coque, and all the other great legends toiled to build is gradually eroding, dying and that is why we decided to face the next generation to help arrest the situation.”

Contestants are to perform cover songs and original compositions during the competition. While excitement is high among school pupils, music instructors and parents, organisers say schools have since began rehearsals for the competition that will parade 14 of the 26 bands eliminated during the first round, leaving the remaining contestants to face the battle in front of a panel of industry experts for the second round.

Among the schools qualified for the finals are CMS Grammar School, Igbobi Junior High School, Supreme Education Foundation, Bishop Howell, Seolad Group of Schools, ZIggy Wisdom School,Living Stone Model School, Babington Macaulay, and Baptist Academy, Command Day Secondary School,  Stadium Junior Grammar School  and Agidingbi Junior Grammar School, among others.

The 12 qualified bands in the First Round tagged, Knockout Series, as well as winners in Solo-Face-Off  will move up to this year’s Grand Finale set for June 21 which coincides with World Music Day.

  • How BBNaija contestants voted themselves for eviction

After last Sunday’s twists where two supposed evictees were pardoned  and the introduction of two new contestants, tension resumed Monday after three members were put up for possible eviction. They include the likeable Efe, amorous Miyonse and music devotee Soma.

It was the eighth day of the show and Biggie gave each housemate 45 seconds to make their nomination decision, leading to a gloomy feeling afterwards.

Only the two new housemates; Debbie-Rise and Bassey were exempted from nominating and being nominated.

Biggie kicked off the first live nomination show by calling Bally into the Diary Room. And there was no time wasted as Biggie asked Bally to give his two nominations in 45 seconds – same for the 11 other old housemates.

Bally voted out Miyonse and Soma; Bisola voted out Miyonse and Gifty; Kemen voted out Miyonse and Soma; TBoss voted out Miyonse and Gifty; TTT voted out Gifty and Miyonse; Uriel voted out Bisola and TBoss; Miyonse voted out Kemen and Marvis; Marvis voted out Miyonse and Gifty; Soma voted out Kemen and TTT; Gifty voted out CoCoIce and Bisola; Efe voted out Miyonse and TBoss while CoCoIce voted out Miyonse and Soma.

In all, eight housemates nominated Miyonse, including his presumed girlfriend, Tboss. Gifty got four nominations, while Soma ended up being the third housemates with the highest nominations with three nominations.

However, as is the tradition on the show, the Head of House must save one of the three and replace him or her. With the task of ‘save and replace’ rested on CocoIce as Head of House, she saved Gifty and replaced her with Efe.

The decision was shocking to most fans of the show who want Efe to remain in the competition for the prize of N25 million and a brand new Kia Sorento car.

  • Parents intercede for COWBELLPEDIA contestants as pupil sets record

Parents intercede for COWBELLPEDIA contestants as pupil sets record

With the best 108 of maths brain set for the television quiz stage of the Cowbellpedia maths competition, some parents have sought spiritual help  for their wards’ success.

While teachers played the roles of counsellor and supporter, some parents were seen at the studio where the Cowbellpedia quiz competition was being recorded, praying for their wards, too tensed to concentrate while awaiting their turns.

The prayer may have been necessitated by the brilliance exhibited by the pupils on set.  For instance, a contestant in the junior category, Oluwatunmise Idowu, of Scholars Universal Secondary School, Ota, Ogun State wowed everybody by answering 17 questions correctly in the 60 Seconds of fame round.

With the feat, she beat the record of 15 questions set by the 2015 Cowbellpedia champion, Ayodeji Akinkuowo.

One of the parents providing spiritual support for her ward was Mrs. Josephine Okeke, whose son, Favour, was one of the five representing Loyola Jesuit College, Gidan-Mangoro, Abuja.

She spent most of her time entreating God to reward her son’s efforts.

Okeke contested against Ayomide Ajayi of Bibo Oluwa Academy Ilesa, Osun State; Emmanuel Igban of Ambassador College, Ota, Ogun State; Isikanye Praise of Federal Government Academy, Suleja, Niger State; Ugozuchuwu Offor of University of Nigeria Secondary School, Enugu Campus; and Divine Uzagu of Federal Government College, Okposi, Abia State in the preliminary stage of the quiz.

Mrs. Okeke, a pharmacist, who ‘dumped’ her career to support her children, said the prayers were necessary as effort is not enough.

“The race is not for the swif, but for God who shows mercy and God says: ‘I will show mercy to whom I will show mercy.’ I believe God for my son. I am standing in the gap for him. God cannot fail, so, my son can never fail,” she said.

Another intercessor was Mrs Patience Okoh, who stood in the gap for her niece, Angelica Uzo, also of Loyola Jesuit College.

“I am the mother here in Lagos, my sister called me up from Abuja yesterday that I should be here to monitor her. What it means is that I must do everything within my power to make her succeed and the best I can do is to pray. This I have been doing,” she remarked.

Redemption Adebayo, a pupil of Model Secondary School, Alagbaka, Akure, Ondo State, said her father called her daily to pray that she makes it to the finals.

“The whole family is praying for me, and we did a lot of prayers to seek God’s favour from the beginning of this competition,” she said.

With one million up for grabs for each of the winners (and N400,000 for their teachers) in the junior and senior categories of the competition, as well as an all-expenses paid educational excursion outside the country, the prayers are in order. However, the finals would tell whose prayers God would answer.

Last year, Akinkuowo of Adeyemi Demonstration Secondary School, Ondo State, won the senior category, while Munachi Ernest-Eze of Loyola Jesuit won the junior category.

They got N750,000 each, while their teachers got N250,000. The schools also got five computers and printers.

  • How contestants for Ooni’s deputy Obalufe were screened

Facts have emerged on how an 11-member committee screened the 10 contestants for the vacant stool of Obalufe Iremo, the head of Ife kingmakers.

The Obalufe is second in command to the Ooni.

Ten princes from the Aga Ruling House had signified intention for the vacant position after the death of Oba Solomon Omisakin.

Some of the contestants are protesting against the Ayoola Olafiranye-led committee after Elu Abayomi came first with 115 points, Sunday Oladimeji Fadire 98 points and Segun Adeyeloja 96 points.

They accused the committee, which was yet to make its report public, of not complying with the tradition that frowns on picking a candidate from female lineage, when there are qualified ones from the male lineage.

But a contestant said before the selection process began, a meeting was conveyed where it was resolved that aspirants from both male and female lineages should be allowed to vie for the post.

Abayomi said because Jaojo, one of the ruling houses, is a female progenitor, it implies that the arrangement al binitio has no special consideration for patriarchal system.

According to him, “two Obalufes before Oba Omisakin were from female lineage and contributed immensely to Ile-Ife. So, no declaration forbids candidates from the female lineage.

“After the committee was inaugurated to select the most qualified candidate(s), it began work. Forms were sold for N100, 000 while required credentials were also submitted.

“Ten aspirants were deemed eligible. As part of the selection process, the committee saw the need for the aspirants to sign a MoU with the following terms:

“That the committee was assessed and accepted by all aspirants as competent to do the job.

“That the ten aspirants were eligible to vie for the post.

“That the decision of the committee shall be binding on all aspirants. That all the aspirants will embrace peace before, during and after the exercise.

“After the passage rites of Oba Omisakin, the committee received a communiqué from the government to select the next Obalufe. It fixed December 31 for the final screening.

“The event was closely observed and monitored by appropriate authorities, such as the executive secretaries of both Ife Central and Ife East Local Governments, the head of local government administration (HLA) , the area commander, Moore police station, and other security agencies.

“Nine aspirants appeared for screening; one abstained for personal reasons.”

He said if condemnation of the outcome of the committee’s work persists, the exercise can be decalred inconclusive.
