  • INEC registers 600,000 new voters in Delta

The Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ) in Delta registered 600,000 new Permanent Voter Cards {PVCs} during the just-concluded Continuous Voters Registration { CVR }.

INEC’s Administrative Secretary in the state, Mrs Rose Orianrian-Anthony, disclosed this to News men in Asaba on Tuesday.

Orianrian-Anthony said that the commission achieved a lot by giving the electorate who had not registered before the opportunity to do so.

She said that this included those who recently relocated to the state from other states.

Orianrian-Anthony said that those whose data were wrongly captured were corrected.

She said that registering for PVC during CVR was a civil responsibility that all Nigerians should cherish.

She said that the CVR was worth the stress and the commission was duly committed to the exercise.

The Administrative Secretary also said that the commission in the state distributed 36,647 old PVCs as at Aug.25 while 137,719 PVCs were yet to be collected.

She said that collection was a bit low in the state and that was why the commission kept sensitising the electorate to come forward for them.

Orianrian-Anthony also advised the disabled and women to be part of the registration.

She said that INEC would continue to do its best to ensure that the votes cast by voters during elections count.

Orianrian-Anthony said that the process would be accessible to all Nigerians irrespective of age, gender and religion.

She said that the field would be free and fair that nobody would be left out.

INEC commences CVR in Madagali LGA

Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ) has commenced Continuous Voters Registration ( CVR ) in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa, Alhaji Kasim Gaidam, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) said.

Gaidam told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yola on Tuesday that the exercise was initially stopped following Boko Haram attacks on villages in the area.

He said the registration followed intensive stakeholders’ meeting between security agencies, government officials and elders from the area.

He added that “finally, INEC has fixed Wednesday, Sept. 20, to start Continuous Voters Registration in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa.

“The exercise was halted due to insecurity challenges.

“However, security situation has improved now and following stakeholders meeting, CVR can now start.”

He announced that a total of 86,631 eligible voters had earlier been registered across the state.

He said there were about 130,000 unclaimed Permanent Voter Cards in the state and appealed to genuine owners to come forward and claim them.

CVR: Adamawa to declare public holiday

Dissatisfied with the voter turn-out, Gov. Muhammadu Bindow of Adamawa says he would declare public holiday to enable eligible citizens of the state participate in the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration (CVR).

Bindow said this while receiving some Adamawa traditional rulers who paid him Sallah homage on Monday in Yola.

The governor said that the level of people’s participation in the exercise across the state was discouraging and appeal to all eligible citizens to come out and be registered.

“The decision is to give chance especially to people from Northern and other parts of the state who lost their voter registration cards either during Boko Haram crisis, flood and other disasters to re-register.

“The State Government is going to declare a two-day public holiday to enable all eligible citizens of the state to participate in the ongoing CVR.

“The State Executive Council in the next meeting will fix the appropriate date for the holiday,’’ Bindow said.

He therefore called on eligible people of the state to come out and register to enable them exercise their rights during elections.

Earlier in their separate remarks, the Lamido of Adamawa, Alhaji Muhammadu Barkindo, and the Emir of Mubi, Alhaji Isa Ahmadu, commended the governor for infrastructural development in the state despite financial constrains.

The traditional rulers pledged their support and cooperation to the government for peace and development to reign supreme in the state.

CVR: INEC to create additional centres in Lagos

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos State says efforts are being made to create additional centres for Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) in 13 local government areas of the state.

Dr. Mustapha Mudashiru, the Administrative Secretary of the Commission in Lagos State, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos.

He said the commission had pushed for more centres, especially in 13 of the 20 council areas in the state to reduce crowd in existing centres.

He added that “we requested for additional centres, particularly for some peculiar local governments in Lagos State to further address some of the challenges facing CVR  in a metropolitan city like Lagos.

“We are still awaiting formal approval by the commission.

“We made the case for additional centres in Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Alimosho, Eti-Osa, Ifako-Ijaiye, Ikeja, Ikorodu, Kosofe, Mushin, Ojo, Oshodi-Isolo, Somolu, Surulere, and Lagos Mainland local governments.

“We are hopeful that the commission will consider this and as soon as we get
approval, we will put those centres into use.

“This will go a long way in reducing crowd at existing centres because it is one of the challenges we have been facing.”

The INEC boss said the commission was committed to bringing innovation and improvement to deliver its mandate to the people.

He commended eligible residents of the state for their eagerness and enthusiasm toward the exercise, stressing that statistics nationwide showed that Lagos was leading
    in the exercise.

According to him, the commission’s Voter Education Department is reaching out to tertiary institutions in the state to further increase awareness about the ongoing CVR.

Mudashiru noted that the commission had carried its publicity to University of Lagos, College of Education, Technical, Akoka and would visit other tertiary institutions in the state.

He urged the Lagos State Government to complement the efforts of the commission in the area of publicity and enlightenment, saying it would go a long way in assisting those who may be unaware of the exercise.

On the high volume of uncollected Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) to the tune of 1.4 million, Mudashiru said the majority of the owners of the cards had relocated, especially students who had completed their course of study.

He urged eligible residents to show interest in the exercise to avoid being disenfranchised in future elections, saying it was free.

INEC started the nationwide CVR on April 27 to capture those who attained 18 years of age and others who did not register or those seeking replacement or transfer.
