Cooreman sure of double over Vita Club Mokanda

Akwa United coach, Maurice Cooreman has said his team will complete a double over Vita Club Mokanda when both sides face in the return leg of their CAFConfederation Cup preliminary round, second leg fixture in a fortnight.

The Promise Keepers won the first leg 1-0 in Brazzaville over the weekend and the tactician believes his men will get a win at home.

“It is very possible that we get a win at home because we will be playing in front of our fans. My players did a good job in the first leg and we are confident going into the second leg and I feel we can win again against them,” he said.

It is the Promise Keepers’ first ever outing in the continent, having won the Nigeria Federation’s Cup last year and they will progress to the second round if they don’t lose at home, which Cooreman said his men will work against any form of complacency.

“We still have to remain focused on our game because the second leg is equally important. We have to give better than we gave in the first leg and I believe we can,” he said.

Saturday’s victory was Akwa United’s debut win on the continent and the former Enyimba FC coach said the players showed doggedness and determination throughout the game, which effectively gave his side the advantage.

Returnee forward, Ubong Ekpai scored in the first half to seal a famous win and Cooreman insists his side will be good enough for the title if they put up such quality consistently.

Technical Adviser of Akwa United FC Uyo, Maurice Cooreman was a relieved man to see his wards claim maximum points against Nasarawa, but it was his team’s dogged display that impressed him more.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Cooreman said: “I said it on the bench that the team that scores the first goal would win the match. We are lucky that we scored in the last minute but for me as a coach, I am happy to see my players fighting for the ball, working very hard and everybody wanting to come into the team”.

The Belgian coach also stated that his team is getting more in good shape ahead of their first ever game in a CAF continental tournament next week. He believes that with two more difficult games against Warri Wolves (in midweek) and Enyimba (on the last day of competition) to come, his team will just be about ready to go.

“Yes we are getting closer to what we are expecting,” he said.

“You know we are also playing against Wolves on today and Enyimba on Friday. These games are good for our preparation and the kind of stadium and atmosphere we play in will also help us when we go to Congo next week,” added the former Enyimba, Gombe United and most recently Ikorodu United coach.

“Yeah, we could have done better with our chances. But that is what we have been working on in training everyday and will continue to do so. But for the moment, you saw two new players today (Zinte Udeh and James Audu) not really fit but I saw what they can do. I hope we will be ready for the continent,” Cooreman said.

Matchday 2 of the Super Four Challenge in Uyo today will see hosts Akwa United tackling Warri Wolves, the only team that beat them in Kaduna while Nasarawa United will do battle with Enyimba.

Head coach of Akwa United, Maurice Cooreman was delighted with his side’s 1-0 win over Enyimba FC on Friday.
Akwa United narrowly lost their first match in the ongoing Kaduna leg of the 2016 Nigeria Professional Football League Super Four to Warri Wolves but bounced back brilliantly with a deserved one-nil victory over Enyimba in their second game on Friday.
However, the Belgian-born gaffer was sent to the stands for dissent.
Cooreman praised the character of his side and believes that they have turned a corner in their Super Four campaign.
“We have been building for this. We have had a good game and the momentum is building. Our team showed character, they showed tenacity – and I’m just happy that the fighting spirit is back,” he told futbalgalore.com.
“We made it difficult for Enyimba. I told the team that if we stop them from playing, we have a chance of winning the match.”

Cooreman: CAF Confederation Cup title, a personal target

Akwa United head coach, Maurice Cooreman has said that his desire to win the CAF Confederation Cup title as a coach has made the target placed before him by the club as more of his own personal objective.

The Promise Keepers won the 2015 Federation Cup title at the expense of Lobi Stars last November in Lagos and after ditching the coach that ended their barren spell in the domestic scene, Zachary Baraje, the club has brought in Cooreman, a Belgian with enough experience in the Nigerian league.

Cooreman has led clubs like Enyimba, Lobi Stars, Warri Wolves and a host of others in the top flight and the Uyo side has acquired his services only few months after he took Ikorodu FC to the premier league from lower division.

The former Gombe United coach told SportingLife that he is setting his sights on winning the CAF Confederation Cup with Akwa United and that with assurances from the Akwa Ibom Government, everything is possible.

Cooreman told added that Akwa United players have resumed after the yuletide break and have started preparations for the continent and the domestic matches.

    Cooreman eyes CCC trophy

Newly employed head coach of Akwa United Maurice Cooreman insists the target for the club in the CAF Confederation Cup is to win the title.

This revelation comes as a big surprise especially with the club making its debut in the competition.

The Promise Keepers got the ticket after they clinched the 2015 Federation Cup but struggled for form in the 2014/15 league season. Playing in Africa will provide the team massive joy next season according to Cooreman.

“The target is to win the trophy,” Cooreman said.

Akwa United will take on V. Club Mokanda of Congo in the preliminary round.

The matches to be played on home and away basis will be held between February 12 and 28.

In the next round of the Confederation Cup, the winners of the match between Akwa and V. Club will face the winners of the clash involving Police of Rwanda and Atlabara from South Sudan.

    Akwa deny signing Cooreman

Nigeria Professional Football League ( NPFL ) side, Akwa United has said that the report that Maurice Cooreman, technical adviser of promoted side, Ikorodu United has been handed a two-year contract is false.

The Promise Keepers just won the ticket to represent Nigeria in the CAF Confederation Cup courtesy of the Federation Cup victory against Lobi Stars in the final with coach Zachary Baraje in charge of the five-star performance.

An official of the side, Uwem Ekoh said the report of engagement to veteran tactician, Maurice Cooreman is one of the rumours associated with success as the management of the Federation Cup winners is yet to issue any official directives concerning the side’s future in the upcoming season.

“The report that we have engaged coach Maurice Cooreman or any other coach is a rumour and speculation for now though very soon, at least, before the week runs out we will make a statement that will put to rest permanently every form of speculation.

“The board has not said anything since we won the Federation Cup at the expense of Lobi Stars in Lagos.

“The coaches and players are on break and will resume for the new session on December 14.

“So that’s the true state of affairs right now as far as Akwa United are concerned any other thing contrary is mere rumour and speculation, ” said Ekoh to supersport.com.

There were strong reasons that Baraje will leave the side after guiding the Uyo outfit to Federation Cup victory but the former Enyimba and El Kanemi Warriors coach has come out to say  that he will take charge of the side’s campaign in the continent and domestic league.

Cooreman proud of Ikorodu Utd’s promotion

Maurice Cooreman has expressed satisfaction with the promotion of Ikorodu United to the Glo Premier League.

For the first time since his coaching career started in Nigeria’s top flight with Gabros International (now FC Ifeanyiubah) back in 2003, Cooreman stepped down to the lower division after accepting to coach the newly formed club.

“I want to praise my players and the sponsor for the promotion of Ikorodu United. We worked hard to achieve the feat as a team.

“My target was to get Ikorodu United to the Premier League and I’m excited we achieved promotion,” he said to supersport.com.

Cooreman boosted his squad with the trio of Cyril Olisemah, Lucky Edjebare and Shedrack Francis, who have top flight experience.

Apart from Gabros, Cooreman has managed Lobi Stars, Bendel Insurance, defunct NPA, Ocean Boys, Enyimba, Kaduna United, Warri Wolves and Gombe United.

Cooreman won the league twice with Ocean Boys as well as with Enyimba and was Cup champion with Kaduna United.

Cooreman dumps Gombe for Ikorodu FC

Veteran  Nigeria Premier  League coach, Maurice Cooreman, has joined Nigeria National League side, Ikorodu FC.

The coach, who has won every single title available in Nigeria, is already in Lagos since the start of the year, steadying and training his new side for their assault on the Nigeria league.

His last job was at Gombe United, a team that got relegated after he left although their poor start to the season under him made it difficult for the new coach Austin Eguavoen to rescue them.

The Belgian began his coaching career in Nigeria handling Nigerdock FC of Lagos from where he helped in the discovery of players like Taiye Taiwo and Mannaseh Ishaku.

He has led Ocean Boys and Enyimba to league glory in the past and also lead un-fancied Kaduna United to FA Cup glory in 2010.

However, his last two jobs in the top flight of Nigerian football with Warri Wolves and Gombe United didn’t end so well like his past job elsewhere so he will be wishing Ikorodu FC makes an impression in the NNL.

  • Cooreman favoured at Heartland

    Cooreman favoured at Heartland

Belgian tactician, Maurice Cooreman has emerged as top favourite to replace departed technical adviser, Kelechi Emeteole at Heartland.

The former Gombe United coach has handled Enyimba, Kaduna United, Warri Wolves, Lobi Stars, Gabros FC, Ocean Boys, Asante Kotoko, among others in the past.

Emeteole is reported to have crossed over to oriental neighbours, Enugu Rangers for the 2014/15 Glo Premier League season.

An unnamed source said although other experienced coaches have shown interest in the Heartland position the former Gombe United coach is highly favoured to grab the top job due to his track record of winning laurels with past clubs.

“Maurice Cooreman is certain to take charge at Heartland for the upcoming season except the unexpected happens. I’m aware that discussions have progressed smoothly between the experienced coach and the management of Heartland. Although I can’t say outright whether discussion have reached the point where both parties will sit down to append signatures.

“I know, too that other experienced coaches like Godwin Uwua, Salisu Yusuf, among others have equally shown interest in handling Heartland, but Cooreman is in pole position to get the job due to his track record with past teams.

“Cooreman is a coach that has almost won laurels, continental tickets with past teams as well as has eyes for the discovery and harmonious working relationship with young talents.

“These factors place him above his challengers and I think the management of Heartland is favourably disposed to work with him. I believe the management is quite on top of the situation with the reported departure of Kelechi Emeteole to Enugu Rangers,” said the source to supersport.com.

Emeteole guided the 2009 CAF Champions League finalists to the 10th position in the outgone 2013/14 Glo Premier League season.
