  • Oba Tejuosho marks 28th coronation anniversary with praise, worship

Those who thought the recent 28th anniversary of the coronation of the Osile of Oke-Ona, Oba Adedapo Tejuosho, would be full of the usual rituals of songs and dance, traditional festivals and a visit to one or two shrines and sacred sites to pay respect to the ancestors have since found how wrong they were. Unlike many other Yoruba monarchs who dare not go against ancestral beliefs, Oba Tejuosho, a devout Christian, never hesitates in flaunting his faith even though he occupies one of the most revered stools in Yorubaland.

So it was that at his recent coronation anniversary, all those who had looked forward to a celebration rooted in traditional rituals went home disappointed. The prayers of a chief priest were replaced by those of a pastor. Folk music gave way to gospel ministrations led by talented singer Tope Alabi. And instead of a show by masquerades, there was a 28-hour marathon praise organised by Oba Karunwi Evangelical Movement as a form of thanksgiving for his longevity on the throne.

The people of Oke-Ona have become used to their monarch’s ways. Although opposition from traditionalists has sprung up now and then, his seat remains as secure as ever.

Ancient community revisits history with coronation anniversary

Arrangements are in top gear for the 3rd coronation anniversary of His Royal Highness, Oba Owolabi Adeyemi Adeniyi, the Oba of Igbobi-Sabe, in Shomolu area of Lagos State. According to the Monarch, who spoke with The Nation in his palace last Thursday, the community decided to celebrate the anniversary of his ascension to the throne largely for the purpose of drawing the attention of Nigerians, especially the Yoruba race, to the prominent historical position of Igbobi-Sabe.
Oba Adeniyi, who lamented that his domain was, for some time in the past, under the siege of criminals, expressed happiness that with his coming to the throne of his fore-fathers, the community was able to overcome the numerous challenges posed by criminals and their sponsors. He attributed his success in ridding Igbobi-Sabe of criminals to God and his fore-fathers.
“Whenever a rightful King mounts the throne, the community will prosper and overcome all crises. Fadeyi, the most popular part of my domain, was a notorious place as we all know. But those people who were causing problem there before are not from this domain. They are strangers. We thank God we got rid of them. There is no magic other than the prayer of the people in my domain and the grace of God. Our ancestors stood by us and we overcame the problem,” he said.
Speaking on the place of Igbobi-Sabe in Yoruba history, Oba Adeniyi recalled that the founder of the community, Sabe, was one of the great-grandchildren of Oduduwa, the father of the Yourba race. He lamented that this historical importance of the town is almost forgotten by the Yoruba race. He added that the coronation anniversary will be used to reiterate the place of Igbobi Sabe in the country’s socio-political history.
“The creation of Igbobi-Sabe dates back to the early years when our progenitor, a great hunter of no equal, Sabe, settled in the Colanut groove (Igbo-Obi) here after a tortuous journey on a hunting expedition, from Ile-Ife, the cradle and ancestral origin of the Yoruba race. It was at the end of that predestined journey that our ancestor founded our town here.
Sabe was one of the many great-grandchildren of Oduduwa, the father of the Yourba race. Of course, his journey was not without If a divinity which actually directed him to where he should go and finally instructed him to settle here in Igbobi Sabe, a Kolanut farmland. The farmland back then was popular for a variety of Kolanut called Edun.
As the custodianof a rich tradition and culture that need to be propagated for people to remember and respect the place of our town in the history of the land, we are doing everything possible to promote our cultural heritages and reposition Igbobi-Sabe to take her rightful place in the comity of nations in Yorubaland and in Nigeria as a whole.
Ours is a community with huge presence of traditional deities which are frequently worshiped by our people. We still hold our culture and tradition in high esteem as a frontline Yoruba town. Deities like Elegbara, Ogun, Gelede and others are still very alive with us here but Gelede is the most popular. We have the best varieties of Gelede here in Igbobi Sabe. These are some of the things we want to use the anniversary to propagate,” Oba Adeniyi said.
Explaining his love for the Gelede, Oba Adeniyi said he usually bring the devotees of the deity from Ketu in neighboring Benin Republic. According to him, the people of Ketu, who are siblings of the Sabe people here in Igbobi, have religiously practiced the Gelede over the years so much that the practice has remained the same as it was in the very beginning.
However, the Monarch, who said he was a Pastor before ascending the throne of his forefathers, was quick to point out that adherent of other faiths like the Christians and the Muslims, are free to live and practice their religion in his domain. According to him, there is no way anybody can be forced to practice a religion other than the one he desires.
“We do not disturb or discriminate against non-traditional worshipers. I was a Pastor and a Shepherd before becoming a King. I was first a Shepherd in the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC). Then I later moved to the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) Agbala Itura. Look at me today, I am on the throne of my ancestors as a traditionalist. So, we do not force people to partake in our worships, everybody is free to belong to any religion in Igbobi Sabe,” he explained.
The Monarch also talked about his achievements on the throne and his aspirations for his subjects. “The moment I climbed the throne of my fore-fathers three years ago, my first step was to establish a foundation that is aimed at helping our people to the best of my ability. I provided scholarships for indigent students and organize free tutorials for students and school children in my domain after the end of each school session. Igbobi Sabe has the highest number of educational institutions in this part of the world. My domain has played significant roles in the educational pursuit of our children.”
Hon. Aliu Babatunde Kazeem, a former member of House of Representatives and a childhood friend of the King, described Oba Owolabi as a very peaceful, calm and intelligent person.”I wish him a successful reign. I pray Igbobi Sabe people will know his tenure for good, development and peace,’ he said. The ex-Lawmaker added that Oba Adeniyi has brought lots of respect and awareness to the town in the last three years.
Chief Kolawole Daudu who is the Baale of Abule-Ijesha, also described the Oba as accommodating and determined to change the fortune of his domain for good. He described him as the unifying force for the many communities in Shomolu and Yaba areas of the state. The community leader added that Oba Adeniyi’s effort at developing his domain is worthy of emulation by other traditional rulers. ” He is a change agent,” Daudu said.

The Kabiyesi was joined by his brother monarchs led by the current Chairman of Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers who is also the Ologotun of Ogotun Ekiti, Oba Samuel Oladapo Oyebade.

A compendium on the life and times of Oba Adejugbe, Echoes of the Throne, edited by Mrs. Rolake Adewumi was launched at the ceremony.

Fayose launched the magazine with N5 million on behalf of the state government while Aare Babalola launched it with N2 million. Mrs. Suswam launched with it N1 million.

The Ewi received homage from members of his traditional cabinet otherwise known as the Ewi-in-Council, the Omo Owas; honorary chiefs, Iyalojas, Ado-Ekiti Progressive Union (APU), clubs and other tribes in the town.

Mrs. Suswam, a native of Emure Ekiti said she was delighted to identify with Ekiti people, saying: “I will continue to be proud to have been born an Ekiti girl.”

She revealed that she had her first encounter with Oba Adejugbe at the University of Jos (UNIJOS) where he served as Chancellor.

Mrs. Suswam said she was impressed by the Ewi’s speech as UNIJOS Chancellor, describing the speech as “excellent and brilliant.”

While saying she is proud of Oba Adejugbe, Mrs. Suswam prayed for a long and peaceful reign for Kabiyesi, saying Ekiti State would continue to benefit from his wise counsel and experience.

Former Deputy Governor Alabi said the Ewi will be eternally remembered for being in the forefront of the creation of Ekiti State out of the old Ondo State.

Alabi, who served as Director of Budget in the Presidency during the Abacha era when agitation for the creation of Ekiti State reached its peak revealed that he followed Oba Adejugbe to the late former military ruler to push for the creation of a new state.

“I remember Kabiyesi telling Abacha that Ekiti people would not allow him back home if the state creation wouldn’t be a reality.”

The Ologotun of Ogotun, Oba Oyebade, said the entire members of the State Council of Obas celebrate with one of them for witnessing the landmark. He wished the Ewi more fruitful and prosperous reign.

In his speech, Fayose, who was the guest of honour, promised to attend any similar event organised in honour of any traditional ruler in the state.

“The governor is for all traditional rulers and people of the state. I want to assure our royal fathers that occasion such as this is not limited to Ado. As many of our royal fathers that have such a great event like this, the governor is at your beck and call.

“Ado is central to us all as a state and I am for all royal fathers. Any event that tells the history of your existence, I will always be part of it. I also promise that by God’s grace, the new Oja Oba Market, if not completed by this time next year, will be near completion,” he said.

Fayose added: “I pray that new things will be happening in this palace anytime we come here. We have spent over a year in office and in another five months, it will be two years.

“I look forward to the time I will say bye-bye as the Governor of Ekiti State. I work hard to ensure that value is added to governance.”

The Ewi told the gathering that he had prepared a 22-page address but said he would not want to bore the guests with long speech other than to appreciate them for making the day a glorious one.

Oba Adejugbe thanked Governor Fayose for his tremendous efforts at developing Ado-Ekiti and the state at large.

“Ado people cannot thank you enough. You have helped us a great deal and we pray that God will continue to support and bless you. I thank you also for the pavilion here in the palace. It was through your great support and effort that it has been completed.

“I appeal to all Ado sons and daughters to support the administration,” he said.

Oba Adejugbe said his longevity on the throne was due to the grace of God and the people over whom he reigns as king.

He said: “I give glory to God. Twenty-Five years is just like yesterday. The mountains I thought I won’t be able to climb, I was able to climb them.

“I want to appeal to my people, let us give peace a chance. It is when there is peace that the governor can think of the right thing to do for the people. It is when there is peace that Aare Babalola will think of what to do for our people.

“I have no other job other than to pray for the peace and overall development of Ado-Ekiti. I want to urge every one of us to go back to the basics. Let us go back to farming.

“There is no house in Ekiti that does not have a PhD holder but we must go back to the farm irrespective of your status.

“If salaries are irregular and if you have yams in your farm you will have something to sell and eat. In those days, terminal ailments are rare and people enjoy long life because they eat fresh food unlike today when people eat food treated with chemicals.”

Earlier, Babalola had listed the qualities that made Fayose excel as a governor.

He described Fayose as a realistic and pragmatic person, who has brought that to governance.

He said with the dwindling revenue base of the government at all tiers, those in leadership positions have to make extra efforts to meet the yearnings and aspirations of the people.

“Thank God that we have a governor that is realistic and pragmatic. When he says yes it means yes and when he says no it is no.

“We have a governor that is truthful, honest and transparent and that has been helping us in the state. It has also manifested in the recent award given the state government.”
