  • Ambode inaugurates committee on oil producing area relations

Ambode inaugurates committee on oil producing area relations

Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Thursday inaugurated a 45-member committee on Oil Producing Areas Community Relations in Badagry area of the state.

Ambode said the inauguration of the committee was aimed at preventing face-off between investors and host communities of oil producing areas often experienced in the country.

The inauguration comes after the state has officially joined the League of oil producing states in the country.

This followed the discovery of crude oil by an indigenous oil firm, Yinka Folawiyo Petroleum Company Limited.

Exploration and developmental activities in this field commenced since June 1991 and it officially became operational in 2016.

Ambode said: “Lagos, being the home of Nigeria’s most critical commercial activities and now an oil producing state, cannot afford to have any community unrests or disruption of the peace.

“It is imperative that our oil producing companies and their host communities enjoy a very warm and mutually beneficial relationship.”

He said that oil was the major source of revenue in Nigeria today and despite the huge benefits from its discovery, its exploration had brought some negative effects in the oil producing communities,  subsequently affecting the whole nation.

“The exploration activities have been found to create serious environmental challenges affecting health, social and economic activities, sustainable development and ecological balance due to land degradation and air pollution among others.

“These activities among others have led to agitations from communities and youth groups, leading to disruption of exploration activities, pipeline vandalisation and in extreme cases kidnapping and violence,” he said.

Ambode noted that this had made it difficult to conduct the business of oil production smoothly and ensure that the relationship between the oil companies and their host communities remained cordial at all times.

This, he said, had also affected negotiations for compensation for land acquisition, damages and spills.
Ambode said that the committee was expected to interface between the host communities and the oil companies in Badagry.

“They are to coordinate a seamless implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility ( CSR ) interventions planned for the Badagry oil producing areas by oil producing companies,” he said.

According to him, they will also coordinate community and development issues between the host communities, government and oil producing companies operating in Badagry.

Ambode said the government was committed to creating a conducive environment for all to thrive, especially in the budding oil industry.

“On our part, we will take proactive measures to prevent oil spillage, and where it happens, quickly move to clean it up according to globally accepted standards.

“We will also ensure the safety and security of our communities and operators at all times,” he said.

Ambode charged the committee to bring to bear their wealth of knowledge and experience to ensure cooperation and collaboration between the communities and the oil companies operating in Badagry.

  • Boko Haram: Group commend troops of Operation Lafiya Dole

Boko Haram: Group commend troops of Operation Lafiya Dole

A Coalition of over 50 Civil Societies Organizations from Abuja has praised troops of Operation Lafiya Dole over their doggedness and resilience in the fight against the Boko Haram insurgents in the North Eastern part of the country.

The Coalition who visited the headquarters of Operation Lafiya Dole was received by the Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru at the Military Command and Control Centre (MCCC), headquarters of the Operation Lafiya Dole, Maimalari Army Cantonment, Maiduguri in company of other top military and security commanders in the theatre.

In his presentation, the leader of the group Comrade Okpakwu Ogenyi expressed happiness over the high spirit fitness of the troop and their combat readiness to crush the Boko Haram insurgents.

“Members of this group met and interacted with Nigerian troops you lead under the various Commands of the Operation Lafiya Dole and were really impressed with our experiences. We were particularly elated to see the gallant Nigerian troops in the counter-terrorism war in the Northeast in high spirits,

“Dear Commanders, we were also pleasantly baffled with the evidently high sense of professionalism, discipline, patriotism,   commitment and hard work you have brought to bear on troops under your control. It is an indication that all of you have keyed into the vision and agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari and the leader of the counter-insurgency war, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt. Gen. Tukur  Yusufu Buratai in prosecuting the anti-terrorism campaigns in our country, Nigeria,” Comrade Ogenyi said..

The group was particularly pleased with the overwhelming presence of troops and their activities both in the rebuilding process and social activities  in the region which according to them has brought confidence especially to the rural communities, stressing that it is the first time the army is uniquely carrying out her corporate social responsibility for the country.

“ The overwhelming presence of soldiers in the Northeast and the constant staging of military activities in the region , like the 2017  Nigerian Army Day Celebration have consistently imposed an atmosphere of serenity in communities and dismantled the psychological fear of threats of terrorists.

“During our on-the-spot assessment of some military formations in Borno state, we were delighted at the noticeable impact or shadows of the Nigerian Army in the rebuilding process of ravaged and devastated communities in the Northeast through roads and other infrastructural projects.

“We stand to be corrected, but we believe this is the first time the Nigerian Army is exhibiting its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to host communities very uniquely.  There is every reason to appreciate the leadership acumen of the COAS, Gen. Buratai and indeed, all of you his subordinate commanders in assisting him to redefine and casting of a new positive image on the Nigerian Army”.

The group praised the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai for his recent redeployment in the army as a way of strengthening the operations while calling on the new commanders to maintain the tempo of the fight.

Comrade Ogenti said: “At this juncture, please permit us to appreciate the wisdom of the Army Chief for the internal redeployments he recently effected in the Nigerian Army. These routine changes are necessary to expose officers to new realms of experience to broaden their knowledge in military operations.  We wish to charge the newly redeployed Commanding Officers to keep the candle burning.

“Particularly, those of you posted to Command Theatre of Operation Lafiya Dole have an onerous duty  and patriotic obligation to Nigeria, not to only sustain the tempo in the counter-insurgency campaigns, but strive to surpass the records of your predecessors by standing up for our country at all times. This is a “mission of no return,” until victory is fully secured.

“We want to assure you that you have won the battle on terrorism. The ceaseless heat you mounted in mopping out the remnants of  Boko Haram insurgents in clearance operations in the Northeast compelled about 700 terrorists,  among them, top commanders on wanted list,    to call for armistice and surrender to the Nigerian Army . We are proud of your performance and you deserve to be celebrated as all of you are heroes.  We cannot afford to negotiate this celebration with anyone, anywhere in the world. Its victory for our country and only us shall celebrate this victory. We shall soon roll out drums for this elaborate celebration.

“Finally, permit us to specially celebrate your Superior Commander, the COAS, Gen. Buratai for his cerebral tactics and strategies in prosecuting the counter-insurgency war. His wizardry in knowing when, where and how to apply any strategy on terrorists humbled insurgents to earn us the victory we all celebrate today. He knows when to change the narrative against the terrorists to keep the camp of his enemies in perpetual disarray. The Army Chief is a soldier dreaded by Boko Haram insurgents and as master of the game, Gen. Buratai knows when to tell insurgents to sit or stand up and they comply. He is truly the African best. Thank you, the “People’s General.”

In his remarks, The Theatre Commander Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Ibrahim  Attahiru, Theatre  Commander of Ops Lafiya Dole  thanked the coalition  for first thinking it wise to come to the north east to get firsthand information of the operations of the troops and the progress been made in the fight against the Boko Haram terrorists.
He noted that the victory over Boko Haram requires collective efforts and not just the military, adding that   such a visit by the CSO today has helped to strengthen them to do more for the country.

Maj. Gen. Attahiru equally  affirmed the commitment of the military to flush out the  remnant of Boko Haram from their hideout anywhere in the country, just as he promised  a to convey the message to all the troops in the Command.

  • Premium Steel & Mines redefines CSR approach

Premium Steel & Mines redefines CSR approach

Of the many definitions of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), the one articulated by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development is very pertinent to contemporary Nigeria, Premium Steel & Mines Limited (PSML) has said.

According to the firm in a statement, CSR is the continuing commitment of businesses to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as of the local community and society at large.

Premium Steel & Mines Limited (PSML), a company that integrates proactive CRS policies in its business plan and strategy with a long-term vision to achieve sustainable growth for the company and to align private returns with social returns.

PSML, formerly known as the Delta Steel Company, is an integrated steel plant located in Warri, Delta State, and is at the forefront of kick-starting the steel sector in Nigeria. The steel sector is vital to the Industrialisation of Nigeria and to the diversification of the country’s economy. PSML’s current investments into the steel plant and its future expansion plans have the potential to make it one of the largest integrated steel manufacturers in the country – offering a portfolio of high quality finished steel products.

PSML’s clear-cut and proactive CSR policy allows for the prompt implementation of its CSR strategy that is hinged on four key themes: youth empowerment, access to quality education, healthcare improvement, and poverty alleviation. PSML’s CSR policy is supported by a dedicated annual budget and key objectives to:

    Enhance relationships with all stakeholders – government, the media, civil society groups, community leaders – through the implementation of a well-defined CSR agenda;

Support the socio-economic development of its host community; and

Be heard and seen as a driver for implementing greener business operations.

PSML’s CSR projects fall under the following themes / program categories:

    Employability Trainee Programs

    Scholarship Funds and Education Programs

    Youth Empowerment Programs

    Healthcare Intervention Programs

PSML has been successfully executing its CSR projects through a structured engagement of its host community through the Community Development Associations (CDA) by working closely with their representatives to discuss implementation strategies for the CSR projects. A key element of the implementation strategy for CSR projects is to not only provide social benefits for the host communities, but to also create employment opportunities by hiring indigenous contractors, recommended by the local community, to implement these projects.

Recent successful project implement through the use of indigenous contractors include the renovation of the Ovwian Primary School and the Technical College that were rehabilitated and received a complete overhaul to make them congenial to learning.

In addition, brand new schools  haven been built to bring education closer to distant communities.  This approach has also seen health facilities built, furnished, and equipped to support the health requirements of the Aladja community.

To complement the renovation of the educational facilities discussed above and to increase the access to education, PSML donated a 30-seater bus each to the local Primary School and the Technical High School – thereby facilitating the daily transport of students to school on a timely basis. This initiative has substantially reduced the level of absenteeism and contributed to an increase in attendance of students at the schools – a key indicator of future academic success.

Primary school is a critical stage in a child’s development and missing school or arriving late due to lack of adequate transportation can have lasting consequences on a child’s educational success and career prospects later in life.  In addition, the level of material covered in primary school curricular has increased substantially; hence, compounding the negative effects of missing school during these formative years of a child’s education.  Furthermore, research has linked chronic absenteeism to lower achievement in math and reading skills, an increase in problem behavior and difficulty in obtaining a score of “proficient” for admission to secondary and technical schools or to higher education institutions such as a university.

According to Mr. Prasanta Mishra, Chief Executive Officer of PSML, “We came to the realization that lack of access to adequate transportation was one of the main factors that contribute to chronic absenteeism, keeping students out of school, and thereby leading to huge gaps in their learning curve, ultimately leading to low overall academic performance”. This according to him led the organisation to ask itself “what do we do and how can we intervene?” The provision of comfortable and safe daily transportation to and from the school was an obvious answer.

Commenting on the donation, the Assitant  Head Teacher of the Ovwian Primary School said: “This is the beginning of a new dawn for the primary education department in our community. PSML started by giving us this thirty-seater bus. This a feat that has never happened in the history of primary education here in Ovwian. This is the first bus; the first of many.”

In today’s classrooms, computers are being increasingly used as a tool to deepen student learning and enhance the teaching-learning process.  The new model of integrating technology into the curriculum means that computers are in high demand throughout the school day. Where computers are readily available, the teachers and administrators are faced with the task of developing a plan that makes the most effective and efficient use of the computer technology available to them.  However, in schools that lack computer facilities, students lack the opportunity to learn critical computer skills in order to prepare them for today’s technology-driven workplace.

This was the thrust behind the decision by PSML to establish Computer Labs in the local Primary and Secondary school in the Aladja community to ensure that teachers can use computer technology to help students learn more easily and faster and it has benefitted the students by helping them develop computer skills, critical for the success of the pupils who represent the future on Nigeria.

The Computer Labs have benefited the students by exposing them to the latest computer technology for learning purposes. Mishra commented that, “While at the school, I observed teachers and students using the computers to write correspondence and print it without assistance. They would not have been able to do this before. The teachers and students in the schools now know what a computer looks like and can use them, albeit in a limited way by modern standards. This was not the case on the first trip when they had never seen a mouse or keyboard before. Students at the school were excited by our visit, lining the walls and windows of the computer room waiting for a turn to use them. The school was very proud to have the computer.”

PSML’s initiatives in the healthcare space include the provision of potable water via boreholes for the schools which had hitherto been a cause of concern and an inefficient use of students’ time since they had to leave the school premises in search of clean water.  Mrs Dezzy Ighomi, a head teacher of Ovwian Primary School commented, “The water that was provided has gone a long way to helping the children, [stopping] the pupils from moving in and out of the school in search of good drinkable water, and our facilities like the toilets have been made cleaner and neater, with water flowing, everybody is happy. Even the community they are in one way or the other benefiting from it because they also come to fetch and use for their household.”

According to PSML, its CSR strategy is not just about philanthropy; it’s about being responsible corporate citizens and defining its role towards society by taking a lead in terms of the health and safety of its workforce, promoting diversity and human rights, implementing strict rules of corporate governance, optimizing the use of natural resources in an environmentally responsible manner, and engaging in a comprehensive and transparent dialogue with all stakeholders.  The company inspires to take a lead in designing appropriate and pioneering CSR programs and to make CSR an important component of the new wave of economic activity that is required for the economic development and industrialization of Nigeria.

  • How to achieve growth in extractive industry

Unless stakeholders including the private sector and the government engage each other in transparency and accountability, sustaining economic growth in the extractive industries may be a tall dream.

The High Commissioner of Canada to Nigeria, Chris Cooter disclosed this at a seminar on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the extractive industries in Lagos.

At the seminar entitled: Sustainability in the extractive industries: Managing your value chain, Cooter noted that the bane of the extractive industries over the years has been the absence of early and open engagement among stakeholders including communities, which are affected by oil, gas and mine operations.

He said the time had come for stakeholders to collaborate to ensure that most operations in the oil, gas and mining industries were carried out in line with international best practices and standards.

Cooter said the era of shrouding the sectors’ activities in secrecy had to be dispensed with if the desired growth was to take place through investments.

He assured of his country’s desire to support Nigeria in its quest to entrench accountability and transparency in the management and administration of its abundant natural resources by providing the template adopted by his country and other advanced countries for consideration for use.

Besides, he said Canada is poised to bring more investments to shore up its $3billion worth of investments that had been made in the country. “So far, we have attained a major feat in our business relationship with Nigeria going by the kind of investments that we have brought here. The fact is that trade values have tripled during this period while investment is growing rapidly by the day. We are also expecting that significant new investments will come very soon to increase the $3 billion worth of investments that has been made already,” he said.

He noted that the business relationship between the countries was expected to grow by the recent launch of the bi-national commission, which was signed sometimes in April.

The high commissioner said the commission, which focuses on security, economic and critical components of the economy would provide the framework for adding momentum to the business relationship between the two countries to facilitate opportunities, particularly in the extractive industries.

The General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs (PGPA), Chevron Nigeria Limited, Deji Haastrup, said sustaining growth in the extractive industries should not be left to private sector as the government and other stakeholders, including Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) had roles to play in ensuring that the huge revenues realised from oil, gas and mining operations were monitored and channelled into other worthwhile projects.

He also said the country’s future lies in the diversification of the economy and the encouragement of the spirit of entrepreneurship among the youth to reduce over dependence on oil.

He enjoined stakeholders to work together so that the challenges militating against achieving transparency and accountability in the extractive industries, which include lack of respect for rule of law and sanctity of agreements, poverty, corruption and inadequate infrastructure, can be overcome.
