Correctional Service releases biometric information on 31 fleeing inmates

The Nigerian Correctional Service, (NCoS) has released details of biometric information of some escapees from the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Suleja, under the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command.

The inmates, about 119 of them, fled the Centre in April as a result of the collapse of the facility’s perimeter wall following a heavy downpour.

Some of the inmates were immediately recaptured, while security forces were still on the trail of the majority of them.

The Correctional Service said it had become pertinent to publish their biometric details to recapture them and bring them back into custody. The Service had earlier published biometric details of 18 of the fleeing inmates.

“The general public is further informed that the Nigerian Correctional Service has since deployed overt and covert strategies towards recapturing all escapees while ensuring that security in custodial facilities nationwide is beefed up to forestall any security breaches.

“If any of the escapees is sighted, the public can report to the nearest security agent or agency or may call the following numbers: 07087086005, 09060004598, or 08075050006.

The NCoS also said six other personnel have had their ranks reduced, while 13 others received a verbal rebuke for various misconducts.

A statement by the service public relations officer, Abubakar Umar, said a total of 20 personnel were discharged and acquitted of allegations of misconduct levelled against them.

He said the Civil Defence, Correctional Service, Fire, and Immigration Board approved the sanctions for personnel.

The board “reviewed various cases of unprofessional conducts, wrongdoings, improper behaviours and serious misconducts of erring personnel, resulting to the dismissal of three (3) personnel, including a Controller of Corrections, for various misconducts such as gross negligence of duty, absence without leave, trafficking in illicit items, general inefficiency, falsification of results, etc”, Umar said.

The statement reads: “In a letter issued by the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), a total of twenty (20) personnel were discharged and acquitted of the various offences which they were accused of; while one (1) officer who was previously suspended was reinstated after the review exercise.

Correctional Service did not reduce inmates’ ration in Jos – Official

The Plateau Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service says it has not reduced the quantity and quality of food rations for inmates.

Spokesman of the command, Mr Godfrey Longdiem, stated this in Jos on Saturday while reacting to media reports that inmates at the Jos Custodial Centre protested over shortage of food on Friday.

He added that instead, the command was planning to supplement inmates’ meals because of current hike in prices of foodstuffs.

“The command wishes to clarify that it has no intention or plan to reduce the quantity or quality of inmates’ ration, but to supplement their meals as a result of the hike in prices of foodstuffs.

“Inmates are normally served rice four times in a week.

“Contractors, however, complained about incessant increases in prices of food items, particularly that of rice and consequently, they requested to serve rice twice a week and supplement with another food.

“This request did not go down well with the inmates, but the situation was later brought under control without harm or injury to anyone,’’ he stated.

Longdiem called on Plateau residents and Nigerians in general to disregard media reports that suggested an attempted jailbreak at the Jos Custodial Centre.

We don’t feed inmates with cat meat, says Correctional Service

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has dismissed reports that inmates at its facilities are fed with cat meat, instead of beef.

The Service described such reports as wicked, malicious and most unfortunate, insisting that its food supplies are handled by professionals while the cooking is done by inmates themselves under strict supervision.

“For the avoidance of doubt, inmates’ ration is awarded to certified vendors who supply raw food stuff to designated custodial centres”, UmarAbubakar, the Public Relations Officer of NCoS, said in a statement.

He explained that a ration committee constituted by the Comptroller-General comprising the officer in-charge of the centre, a medical officer, welfare officer, ration clerk,  chief warder, and other relevant professionals would confirm the wholesomeness before recommendation for payment.

Abubakar said: “The actual cooking is done by the inmates themselves under the supervision of professional caterers, and it is mandatory for designated officers to have a taste of the food before serving to the inmates.

“All these processes are documented for official references and, in a nutshell, show the seriousness attached to inmate feeding by the management of the Nigerian Correctional Service.

“Besides, it is immoral and insensitive to insinuate that cat, a pet, which many detest as food, will be officially served to a people!

“Nigerian Correctional Service, therefore, wishes to advise the public to disregard the unfounded information, as it remains a figment of the author’s imagination.”
