How COSON lit up Lagos for one week

From Vice President Kashim Shettima to Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu, Governor Ademola Adeleke, and Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Barr. Hannatu Musawa, and distinguished speakers, COSON Week lit up Lagos for seven days.

All the distinguished speakers, lecturers, preachers and artistes who spoke, preached or performed at the six major events of the COSON Week between May 25, 2025 and May 31, 2025, all had commendation for the concept of the week long celebrations and hope that Nigeria will rise again.

In a speech at the COSON Green Ball, the Vice President represented by his S.A., Fegho John Umunubo, said: “It is my profound honour to stand before you tonight on behalf of the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON, at this inspiring COSON Green Ball. On behalf of His Excellency, I extend heartfelt appreciation to the Copyright Society of Nigeria, ably led by Chief Tony Okoroji, and to all who have contributed to making COSON Week 2025 a remarkable success.

“Tonight is more than a celebration. It is a reaffirmation of our shared commitment to those who have built and enriched Nigeria’s vibrant music community. Under this year’s compelling theme; Nigeria Will Rise Again! We gather to honour the voices, lyrics, and melodies that have moved generations of Nigerians—from our early beginnings to our digital present.”

In the same light, Governor Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State said at the Green Ball: “It is a privilege to join you this evening at the COSON Green Ball, the flagship event of COSON Week 2025. This year’s theme, Nigeria Will Rise Again, is a powerful message of hope—an affirmation of our shared belief in the power of culture and creativity to rebuild a stronger, more united nation”.

Starting from the opening event of the Week, the National Day of Prayer on Sunday, May 25, the chant, “Nigeria will rise again!” repeatedly rent the air from the bishops, pastors, the congregation, the gospel singers and Nigerians from villages and towns across the nation and cities across the world. “Nigeria will rise again!” became a uniting theme for the citizens of a nation jointly seeking the face of the Almighty to come to the aid of a people confronting profound challenges.

At the 2025 COSON Lecture, and the COSON Mega Jamz at Freedom Park, Nigeria will rise again! became the chorus of most participants. Even Nigeria’s children aged between 10 and 15 years olds, who stormed the headquarters of COSON in Ikeja for Children’s Day at COSON House on May 27, the mantra, Nigeria will rise again! was continually chanted.

Without question, COSON Week 2025 was a master-class in the design and execution of events. Every single event was targeted at a specific section of the society. All the events were held together by the glue, Nigeria will rise again!

COSON continues to be full-fledged corporate organisation, says GM

The General Manager and CEO of the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON), Mrs. Bernice Eriemeghe Ashibuogwu, has issued a public notice refuting the claim by some persons that COSON has been struck out of the Register of Companies and no longer exists as a corporate organisation.

In the notice, Ashibuogwu said; “Anyone, anywhere with a smartphone or a computer can in the comfort of his home or office confirm right now the veracity or otherwise of this shameful propaganda, by logging on to www.cac.gov.ng, the website of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), where every registered company operating in Nigeria is listed.”

Continuing, the General Manager said that the result will be crystal clear that COSON continues to be a full-fledged corporate citizen operating in Nigeria and listed in the Register of Companies.

Ashibuogwu said COSON remains a responsible, transparent, and accountable organisation that has consistently filed its audited accounts and annual returns to the CAC as required by law, a level of corporate compliance which says few companies in Nigeria maintain and which no other organisation in the Nigerian creative industry, can claim.

The renowned accountant revealed that as part of a diabolical effort to cripple and strangle COSON, a perverse judgment was obtained from the court to delist COSON from the Register of Companies. According to her, the game plan is to use the Nigerian way to kill COSON which protects the rights of thousands of owners of copyright in music across Nigeria, so that an unsavoury special purpose vehicle to fleece major organisations operating in Nigeria of billions of Naira in the name of ‘music copyright royalties’ can thrive.

COSON resumes copyright royalty distribution with over N208m

Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON), has resumed full distribution of royalties with the sum of N208.5m earmarked for its members and affiliates.

This followed a resolution adopted by the members at the 2023 Annual General Meeting of the society held this Tuesday, November 7, 2023 at the COSON House in Ikeja, Lagos.

Of the amount, the sum of N62,664,000.00 (Sixty-Two Million, Six Hundred and Sixty-Four Thousand Naira) was set aside as “Palliative Royalty Distribution”.

The money is being split equally among all members of the society whose names appear on the society’s register as at May 19, 2022, as palliatives, to ameliorate the pressing economic situation in the country.

The remaining sum of N145,836,000 (One hundred and forty-five million, eight hundred and thirty-six thousand naira) will be distributed to all qualified members as “Specifics Distribution.”

The motion to ratify the decision of the Management Board, made at its meeting of September 12, 2023, that the AGM approves the distribution, was made by Mr. Tony Ukate, a COSON member from Edo State and supported by Sir Edwin Mary Akwaeze from Imo State.

The COSON AGM presided over by Chief Tony Okoroji, Chairman of the society was attended by musicians and music industry stakeholders from across Nigeria,

In his remark, Okoroji said “I want to assure members of COSON and our international partners that the period of the locust is almost at an end and that with the approval of the members, COSON will today, fully resume the distribution of royalties and benefits to our members and affiliates everywhere.”

  • Banky W supports 2baba on COSON audit

FOLLOWING the call from singer 2baba for the accounts of the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) to be properly audited, another singer Banky Wellington, known as Banky W, has thrown in his support.

Banky W wrote: “If we don’t take steps to hold men in power accountable, we lay down the red carpet for them to abuse it. COSON is the Copyright Society of Nigeria (our collecting society), and it has recently been embroiled in all kinds of public & legal battles. 2 weeks ago @official2baba called for an Independent audit of COSON’s bank accounts. Allegations abound that the society went from spending 1m on security in 2017, to 31m in 2018, as well as rumours of Directors paying themselves as consultants and contractors for the Society’s events…so much so that the NCC has now suspended COSON’s operating license.

“We’ve seen so many of our icons ascend to the highest heights, only to end up in illness and abject poverty, because their Intellectual Property was never properly paid for. In Nigeria, most musicians are only as wealthy as their last performance. There’s a reason why the catalogues of Michael Jackson and the Beatles are worth billions of dollars, while many of our greatest creators are left to rot, after their moment in the Sun.

“A COSON that works would mean a producer like ID Cabasa would be PROPERLY compensated for co-creating Gongo Aso. It would mean that OJB Jezreel (RIP), producer of “African Queen”, wouldn’t have needed crowd-or-celebrity-funding to pay his medical bills.

“2Baba is completely justified as a pioneer, living legend and major stakeholder in our Industry, to request that our society’s accounts be audited. I found the response to his request to be belittling and insulting… with the Chairman claiming that 2Baba was just trying to be on @efeomorogbe’s side, because Efe is his manager and many members have voted for Efe to replace him.

“Chief Tony Okoroji has been Chairman of COSON since 2009, and has spearheaded many important strides taken. However, a leadership position in society must not be allowed to become a potential retirement home.

“The truest test of a man’s character is not when he is faced with adversity, but when he is given power. I’d like him to agree to the audit, and also put in limits on how long anyone can be in power. I hope he remembers Goodluck Jonathan: sometimes, your legacy in power is determined by how you hand it over.”

  • COSON to resist politicians without plans for creative industry

Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) has warned that as the general elections approach, it will mobilize its thousands of members across Nigeria and the millions of music fans who support COSON members to campaign against politicians who have no well thought out plans to deploy Nigeria’s creative talents for the development of the Nigerian nation.

Delivering the annual ‘State of the Music Industry’ address to musicians, investors in the music industry, intellectual property lawyers and the media at COSON House, Ikeja, Lagos on ‘No Music Day’ on September 1, 2018, COSON Chairman, Chief Tony Okoroji said: “It is our firm belief that creative people in Nigeria cannot afford to keep quiet any longer as Nigeria goes through another electioneering campaign season in which politicians hop from one end of the country to the other but no one offers any direction for the development and optimal deployment of the millions of Nigeria’s creative talents for national development.

“Today, we wish to tell Nigerian politicians that we will not be taken for granted anymore and we will not help people canvass for votes who after getting into office will abandon the creative industry to suffer in an environment that completely discourages creativity.

“We are making it abundantly clear that it is only politicians who have developed a well thought out long-term plan for the progress of our industry and have shown clear interest in the development of the nation’s creative environment that can count on our significant support, the mobilization of our fans and their votes as elections approach. In the same manner, we will mobilize massively against those who have no plans to properly deploy the creative energy of young Nigerian people.”

In the same manner, we will mobilize massively against those who have no plans to properly deploy the creative energy of young Nigerian people”

As has become the tradition, COSON asked broadcast stations in the country not to broadcast music between the hours of 8am and 10am to mark the ‘No Music Day’ on Saturday, September 1, 2018 as a mark of solidarity with the nation’s creative industries which have suffered immensely from the debilitating infringement of copyright. The theme of the event was ‘Copyright is Human Right.’

Over 60 top COSON members, Intellectual Property lawyers, and other music industry experts to diverse broadcast stations across Nigeria and the airwaves were bombarded with simultaneous discussions on “Copyright is Human Right” the theme of the 2018 ‘No Music Day’. Top notch social media activities on the same theme ruled the day as flags at the magnificent COSON House in Ikeja flew at half-mast.

Chief Okoroji said, “We wish to remind the different politicians and political parties canvasing for votes across the country that the disease which necessitated the hunger strike of 2009 has not quite been cured. At this time that other nations are building their economic growth on the creative and knowledge economy, Nigeria must take important steps to protect its creative industries to ensure the socio-economic progress of our nation”.

Okoroji who derided the politics of personalities that has enveloped the nation, called for politics of issues that attack the serious deprivations faced by the Nigerian people. Said the former President of PMAN, “We believe that the time has come for our music industry to go beyond simply providing entertainment but playing a key role in nation building.

“We cannot afford to give up as a nation despite the immense disappointments we have had. We must reinvent the Nigerian nation and speak truth to power. We believe that in this process, creative people in Nigeria must play a central role, stand up, take responsibility, work together, establish the strong advocacy necessary in every democracy to create positive change”.

  • COSON sends Ras Kimono home like a king

For two days, the usually calm Oluwaleimu Street in Allen Avenue area of Ikeja, Lagos was on lockdown as artistes and celebrities stormed the COSON House owned by Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) to pay last respect to a legendary Nigerian artiste, the Rub A Dub Master, Ras Kimono.

COSON pulled every stop to ensure Kimono’s funeral was celebrated in grand style like a King.

On Wednesday, August 23, a sleek red-carpet event, a tribute night like no other, was executed by COSON. The tribute night attended by music industry personalities of all persuasions, climaxed the week-long program of the funeral of Ras Kimono who died at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi Lagos on June 10, 2018. The tightly-produced show was opened with an invocation by gospel artiste, Kenny Saint Best. And it featured first class performances by the likes of Tama Nisa, a beautiful young singer, who was flanked by five girls dressed in black, each with a lit candle. She wowed the audience with “Good Night Ras Kimono” adapted from Elton John’s “Candle in the Wind”.

Tama Nisa’s performance was followed by ‘Jolly Good Man,’ a moving tribute in song to Ras Kimono by reggae singer, Righteousman. Incredibly gifted singer, Essence Uwale was also on stage at the COSON Arena and she brought tears to the eyes of many with her unique rendition of ‘One Sweet Day.’

Instead of the traditional minute silence, there was a Minute of Whistles in which everyone in the audience blew their whistles in celebration of Kimono, very well known for his love of whistles. The show at the COSON House was streamed live on several media platforms and on a huge screen on Oluwaleimu Street where a significant audience lined the street and watched until the beginning of the explosive music concert on a huge stage set up by COSON on Oluwaleimu Street.

In between the performances, a documentary personally produced by the COSON Chairman, Chief Tony Okoroji, which traced the life of Ras Kimono, was screened. It highlighted details from his birth in his hometown, Onicha Olona to his passing on in Lagos.

The event which had Koffi as MC, ended with a performance of ‘Holy Spirit’ by Majek Fashek after which differet artistes performed through the night and into the morning.

On the next day, Kimono was laid in state at COSON House. His body was placed in an all glass casket on an enchanting dais designed by Gbemisola Amedu and set up by Lefranc Eventors. People streamed in from everywhere to view the body and pay their last respects to the Rub-A-Dub Master. After the lying in state, a delegation of the COSON Board and officials; the Rastafarian community, members of the family, friends, other entertainment industry personalities and the media, set out in a convoy to Asaba, the Delta State capital.

The body in a white Cadillac Escalade hearse, which was cheered by Nigerians on the road, all the way to Asaba, was received in the Delta State capital, on behalf of the state government by the state Commissioner for Culture & Tourism, Mr. Emma Chinye.

At different stops along the way, ordinary Nigerians waved with many singing and dancing to ‘Under Pressure’, ‘What’s Gwan?’ and ‘Rumba Stylee’ among other hits of Ras Kimono who was a 100% COSON activist and Board member till his end.

  • COSON mourns as Moses Ochie of Fellyx N’ Mozzyx fame bows out

The membership, Board and Management of Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) have expressed sadness at the passing of a very talented and committed member of the society, Mr. Moses Abumere Ochie, a member of the popular 90s pop group, Fellyx n’ Mozzyx. Mozzyx died last Saturday, June 16.

Describing the late artiste as a warm and personable singer and performer, a statement from the body revealed that he died at the age of 49 in his Lagos home.

He had fought a kidney ailment for about 7 years and was preparing for a kidney transplant and hip bone replacement surgery before his death.

“Moses Ochie with his life-long friend, Felix Eiremiokhae, performing as the duo, Fellyx n’ Mozzyx, recorded three albums, ‘Iziegbe’, ‘Free’ and ‘Ruff n Naked’ which titillated music fans in Lagos and beyond in the 90s and thereafter. Those familiar with Lagos night clubs especially the popular Niteshift Coliseum, cannot forget the group that held music lovers spell bound, event after event,” the statement reads.

Reacting from Owerri where he is on an official trip, COSON Chairman, Tony Okoroji said; “This is absolutely overwhelming. To have to deal with this shortly after the loss of Ras Kimono is a big blow. I loved Moses Ochie like a brother. I know that everyone at COSON, especially our General Manager, Mr. Chinedu Chukwuji, also loved Moses. He was incredibly talented and had great respect for everyone. He was a gentleman to the core and a great ambassador of the music profession.

“I prayed and prayed for his ailment not to have the better of him. Just recently, COSON took active steps to generate resources to support his treatment. Sadly, it appears that our best was not good enough. Our hearts go out to his daughters, the entire Ochie family, his friends and fans. May the gentle and musical soul of Moses Ochie rest in peace.”

His death is coming just six days after the passing on of the iconic Reggae toaster, Ras Kimono.

  • COSON: Omorogbe, others locked out of society’s building

Embattled member of Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) Mr. Efe Omorogbe was on Tuesday refused entry to the society’s Ikeja building.

A statement from COSON secretariat says Omorogbe “stormed COSON House in Ikeja with some of his cohorts, bouncers and gang apparently in a desperate attempt to take over control of COSON House.”

Recall that the society’s board members, during a meeting on December 7, 2017, installed Omorogbe as Chairman of COSON, but an Extra Ordinary General Meeting (EOGM) of December 19, 2017 annulled the decision by reinstating Chief Tony Okoroji as Chairman.

Unsatisfied with the new development, and with the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) declaring void, the recall of Okoroji, Omorogbe has continued to parade himself as Chairman of COSON.

COSON has therefore filed a court action recently, asking Efe Omorogbe who was also removed as board member at the EOGM, to stop parading himself as an officer or Chairman of COSON.

According to COSON secretariat, Omorogbe’s Tuesday attempt to take over control of COSON House was resisted, as he and his group were said to be locked out of the building.

The statement further says that Omorogbe had earlier sent e-mails to the General Manager of COSON, Mr. Chinedu Chukwuji asking him to call a board meeting, but the Management of COSON could not accede to his request as they do not recognize him as Chairman of COSON.

Omorogbe has however denied that he went to COSON House with thugs.

He told The Nation on telephone: “We had an emergency board meeting. It was scheduled and all the directors were formally notified.”

According to him, the entrance to the facility was shut on their arrival, thus, the meeting which was attended by six of the directors had to hold at the entrance of COSON House.

Omorogbe listed the other five directors present at the meeting to include Joel Ajayi, Baba Dee, Obi Asika, Seyi Lawal, a representative from Chocolate City and SK Sensation.

“They locked the door to the main entrance to the facility. So, we had our meeting, we made our resolution.”

Omorogbe who said the resolutions would be made public soon, also dismissed claim that a case has been instituted against him in court.

“There is no matter in court. I got an advanced copy of a process. They’ve not gotten confirmation from the court to persecute. I’ve not been served. And if there was supposed to be a matter in court, it’s supposed to be COSON vs Efe Omorogbe. And we just had a board meeting and officially, COSON has withdrawn from the process.”
