    Council chief presents score card

In a few days, the administration in Ikosi/Isheri Local Council Development Area (LCDA) will be 100 days in office. The council Chairman, Abdulfatai Oyesanya said plans are ongoing to make life better for the people. He further explained that the last 100 days had been very challenging, but did not stop the rapid infrastructural development across the wards.

He pointed out that the council had expedited action on the Salami Olomode Road in Ward A, noting that the 105 meters road will open up development.

He said: “We have completed another road in Ward E on Olatunju Street which is about 130 meters. Not only that, we have been able to complete the construction of some markets which we began during my first tenure. The market in Magodo is also due for inauguration and we hope it will enhance the revenue profile of the council.

“Those engaged in market activities would be making profits that would be ploughed back for the development of the council. The Isheri Primary School which we started during my first tenure had been completed and is due for inauguration during the celebration of the 100 days in office.

“We are offering our free medical services to all citizens of Ikosi/Isheri, the facilities are available and they will take care of the medical challenges of all our citizens in places such as Magbon, Isheri and Ajegunle. That will take immediate effect and as part of activities to mark our 100 days in office.”

Oyesanya added that the council places importance on poverty alleviation, even as he said youths, traders and others who do not have viable means of subsistence would be assisted to set up their own businesses.

“We are giving our equipment as part of our poverty alleviation programmes. Those to benefit include men, women, widows and orphans. The items will include deep freezers, sewing machines, grinding machines and popcorn machines, among others.

“We will donate cash to them to enable them to start off. We are also going to provide furniture to our pupils in schools. They will also get writing materials as part of efforts to encourage parents to send their wards to schools. So, the 100 days celebration will be well packaged to make sure that our people feel the impact of democracy.”

The council chief noted that the ongoing projects are sited across the council, stressing that every resident should have a sense of belonging in the LCDA. He maintained that every school within the council will get furniture during the distribution of the items.

“I think it is only in Ward B that has not gotten additional facilities for now. It was not a deliberate act; it is because some of the projects sited in the other wards are very close to the it. And probably by the time we would be talking of one year in office, the projects would go round all the wards irrespective of the circumstances.”

Oyesina said the council had been trying to meet up its primary obligations despite paucity of funds. He pointed out that it was not a peculiar case to the council, stressing that it was a general problem.

The council chief said it would soon constitute council revenue board that would enhance its revenue base.

According to him, the board is the organ of government saddled with the responsibilities of evolving viable means of making money accruable to the council.

He said the legislative arm of the council is committed to impacting on the developmental stride of the government.

“They have been responsible for the making of bye-laws to ensure that what we do in the council is listed as the best for civil society. These bye- laws, like the ones also from the Lagos State government, are being implemented for the progress of the people.”

  • Police arrests council chairman, others over council secretary murder

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested the transition chairman of Ukanafun Local Government Area, Mr. Abasiono Udomfu and three others over the killing of the council’s secretary, Mr. Ime Atakpa.

An aide to the chairman, Mr. Akaninyene Ibout, was said to have been arrested on Wednesday after the visit of the wife of the Akwa Ibom State governor, Mrs. Martha Emmanuel to inaugurate building for widows on Tuesday.

A sister to Atakpa’s wife, who did not want her name in print, told newsmen  in Uyo yesterday that Udomfu, during Emmanuel’s visit, raised up his hands saying: “God knows that my hands are clean concerning the murder of the LG secretary.”

She said that after the chairman had made the declaration, Ibout also said that his hands were clean and that he did not have anything to do with the killing of the late LG secretary.

It was learnt that the police intelligence who were in the area at the time they were making the statements, arrested Ibout on Wednesday.

He was said to have named the chairman and two other people of involvement in the alleged murder of the council secretary.

Our correspondent gathered that Udomfu had made attempts to bribe the policemen that arrested him, asking them not to disgrace him.

The two other people were said to have been arrested from Port Harcourt, Rivers State. They were said to have confessed to the police that Udomfu gave them N300,000 to kill the LG secretary.

On April 16, 2017, four unidentified gunmen shot and killed Atakpa.  He was said to have been shot when he was in his farm, an Integrated Farming scheme, which is a boys’ quarter in his house in Ukanafun on that date.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Chukwu Ikechukwu, who confirmed the arrest, explained that all the suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigation is concluded.

He said: “Investigation is on and soon as we conclude it, the matter will be charged to court.”

Seven months power outage worries LG boss

Alhaji Alhassan Bagudu, the Chairman, Kaiama Local Government Council of Kwara state, has lamented the seven months power outage in the area, which he said had crippled economic activities.

The chairman in a statement he issued on Sunday in Kaiama, appealed to Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) to restore electricity in the area.

Bagudu said that the blackout persisted in spite of the fact that the council had committed a lot of funds for the replacement of damaged cables and other electrical materials.

According to the council boss, the power outage had slowed the pace of work in the local government council operations.
He, however, commended the Emir of Kaiama, Alhaji Muazu Omar, for donating a 50 KVA power generating plant to Kaiama General Hospital.

The statement added that the council had set up a seven-member committee, headed by the Vice-chairman of the council, Alhaji Usman Yusuf to fast-track restoration of electricity to the area.

The committee, among other things, will suggest permanent solutions to the power problem in the area.
The committee is expected to visit headquarters of IBEDC in Ibadan, among others.

EFCC arrests ex-council boss over ‘fake’ projects

Officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday arrested the immediate-past Chairman of the Interim Management Committee of Zaria Local Government Council in Kaduna State, Alhaji Umar Ibrahim-Rabagaddama over alleged fake projects.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the former council boss was invited to the Zaria Police Area Command for questioning by EFCC officials who came from Kano.

The officials, who refused to comment on Ibrahim-Rabagaddama’s case, went round the premises of the council headquarters to investigate the allegations levelled against him.

However, a reliable source, who pleaded anonymity, told NAN that the former chairman presented some documents to the EFCC officials, who were visibly unconvinced by his claims.

The source said the arrest might not be unconnected with a petition written against the former chairman.

Prior to the arrest, there had been rife speculations in Zaria that Ibrahim-Rabagaddama bought a mansion worth about N60 million.

His arrest came barely 12 days after he handed over the council’s leadership to the new council chairman who was elected in the December 1 local government polls.

Some eyewitnesses also told NAN that the EFCC officials later took the suspect to Kano for further interrogation.
