Lagos Council poll: forum vows to resist imposition of candidates

A group, the forum of Agbado-Oke-Odo Grassroots Association have urged the leaders of the Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) to organise credible primaries for chairmanship and councillorship aspirants.

The group warned that imposition of candidates may spell doom for the party during the council poll.

In a statement in Lagos, the group said: “We are using this opportunity to appeal to the ruling All Progressive Congress APC to be cautious of who they present as Chairmanship and Councillorship candidates in Agbado/Oke-Odo LCDA in the forthcoming Council Elections in Lagos State.

“This has become urgent and imperative as a reaction to information making the rounds suggesting that the leadership of the party is considering some former council chairmen for automatic second term tickets.

“We are of the opinion that if such consideration exists at all, it should be based on a readily verifiable record of sterling performance and service to the communities in the course of the initial term of three years of the former chairman.

“We hereby restate with emphasis that such a situation does not arise at all in Agbado/Oke-Odo LCDA! Most of the previous administrations neither have nothing to justify the resources available to them nor the confidence reposed in them by the electorates who voted them into office to be considered for a second term.

“To the contrary, their tenures were marked by rancorous relationships with all well-meaning individuals and associations such as the Community Development Associations, Grassroots Associations, artisans, market men and women, youth associations and leaders of thought and even their own party at the local level levels. It will be in the best interest of the party to refrain from fielding such candidates.”

The group added: “What we need now that the attention of the state government is focused on some of our communities with the upgrading of some our critical road infrastructure is purposeful governance at the LCDA!

“It will be the only way to significantly complement the efforts of the Ambode Administration and none of the previous elected council chairman had demonstrated the capacity to fit the bill in the course of their earlier opportunities.

“Finally, parties are advised to search critically within their ranks for sellable men of integrity with proven records of service to humanity as leadership in the Local Government should no longer be considered as job for the boys.”

  • ‘It’s our turn to produce council chief’

‘It’s our turn to produce council chief’

Chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ajegunle have resolved to put an end to monopoly of power by the people of Olodi by ensuring that the next chairman of Ajeromi Local Government, Lagos State, emerges from their area.

The aggrieved members of the party visited the Lagos office of The Nation to present their case recently. Their spokesman, Mr Yunusa Olaosegba explained that Ajeromi Local Government is made up of Ajegunle and Olodi communities. He said for over 40 years, the Olodi axis has dominated political power by  producing local government chairmen, members of House of Assembly and House of Representatives to the detriment of Ajegunle community.

To prove their case, Olaosegba  gave the names of those that held positions since 1979, all of them from Olodi axis. They are Chief Dele Fayemi, House of Representatives (1979-1983); Hon Japhet Ogunyemi, member, Lagos State House of Assembly (1979-1983); Hon Toyin Bolarinwa James, member House of Representatives (1999-2003) and Hon. Adesina Ogunkoya, member, House of Assembly (1999-2015).

Others are Hon. Tajudeen Ajasa Oluwa, Council Chairman (1991-1993); Prince Rabiu Adio Oluwa, Council Chairman (2000-2007); Hon Kamaldeen Bayewu, Council Chairman (2008-2014)and the current Council Chairman, Mrs Danmole Fehintola Akaba.

“We have met with the APC Senatorial Leader, Chief Rabiu Oluwa on the continued marginalisation of Ajegunle and the need to reverse the trend by conceding the party’s chairmanship candidate to us. Ajegunle deserves better treatment. It has the number of votes in the local government. Whenever there is a problem, it is Ajegunle votes that come to the rescue.

“We have resolved to present Samshideen Arogundade, a talented young man who has empowered many youths in the community and ameliorated water problems of the people through sinking of boreholes. He has been in the struggle for the chairmanship position in the past five years.”

Mr Bright Obaduemu, a lawyer,  corroborated Olaosegba’s views. He said the marginalisation of Ajegunle was very obvious. The fall out, he said, was the denial of infrastructural development such as good roads, potable water, drainage and waste disposal facilities, among others.

Obaduemu, who said he was born and brought up in Ajegunle, claimed that there is no street  in Olodi that has not been tarred; they also dominate infrastructural development as if Ajegunle was not part of Ajeromi Local Government Area. This discrimination must stop, he said.

He said: “Ajegunle is not lacking qualified candidates to hold political offices but they are not given the opportunity to get there. We have plethora of vibrant youths that are competent to be council chairman but we have settled for Arogundade because of his antecedents.

“I have the privilege of relating with Samshideen Arogundade; he has demonstrated penchant  for philanthropy; he takes youths of Ajegunle abroad for education empowerment in United Arab Emirate (U.A.E.). He has a registered foundation dedicated to the development of the youth and to assist the orphans, elderly and physically-challenged people. His respect for elders stands him out among the youth.

“He‘s ably armed with ideas; he has been on ground; his international exposure will enhance the development of Ajegunle”.

A representative of Arewa community in Ajegunle, Alhaji Mohammed Bashir Yusuf appealed to the leadership of the APC in Lagos State to prevail on the  APC leaders in Ajeromi Local Government Area “to  please allow Ajegunle to present chairmanship candidate”.

Yusuf said conceding the office to Ajegunle will create a sense of belonging and as well ensure equity, fairness and justice.

He said the people of Ajegunle are very loyal to the APC. “We have never disappointed the party when it comes to election; we want the party to compensate us this time around by conceding council chairmanship position to Ajegunle,” he stated.

For Mr Nelson Ibebunjo, Ajegunle will develop if the people of the community are allowed to hold political offices.  Ajegunle is a slum. Arogundade has what it takes to develop it. For five years now, we have been struggling for chairmanship position. We are appealing to the APC  national leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to come to our rescue.

The women representative, Mrs Blessing Eze said women in Ajegunle have endorsed Arogundade’s aspiration for the chairmanship position. “All women stand with him;  we believe there will be development in Ajegunle if he becomes Chairman of Ajeromi Local Government Area”, she said.

  • Lessons from Taraba Council polls

    Lessons from Taraba Council polls

‘It was the people’s way of saying thank you for the marvelous job he has done on the roads, at the Jalingo Airport, in the provision of water to the state capital and other towns and communities, in repositioning educational institutions and in
renovating hospitals and equipping them with drugs to improve the quality of healthcare delivery’

Those who say that Nigerian politicians are poor students of history cannot be faulted. They are perfectly right. Nigerian politicians are, indeed, an excellent example of this brand. They forget the past very easily and often recourse to those things that they had condemned and consigned to the dustbins of history as inimical to the survival, growth and maturity of democracy in our country. They insist, when it is convenient for them to do so, that elections must be free and fair and that nothing should be done to impede that expressway that leads to the dreamland of electoral freeness and fairness. But when the tide of the political cyclone turns against them, the drumming will change and so will the dance steps too. The rest of their actions, thereafter, can only be better left to the imagination. They will turn hitherto cherished principles of electoral perfection on their heads and unashamedly insist that it is the right way to go.

The most recent example of this contradiction was experienced in Taraba State where local council elections were held Saturday February 25, Ibi Council Area in particular. Chairmen and councillors were being elected into the 16 local government councils to succeed caretaker committees that have been running their affairs for some time now. The elections were meant to enrich the nation’s new culture of representative governance whereby only those that the people have freely chosen through the instrumentality of the ballot box will occupy elective positions. And the Government of Governor Darius Ishaku, determined to make the elections a positive contribution towards strengthening the country’s incipient culture of democracy, took all steps necessary for this goal to be achieved.

But there were those who did not want this to happen. They were the All Progressives Congress, APC, leaders in Ibi, one of the 16 local government council areas in Taraba State, and the only council area where the recent council elections did not hold on the scheduled date. They came out on their evil mission to stop the elections in the local government and they succeeded but only because Governor Ishaku declined the option of using the machinery of law and order to disperse them from where they had laid ambush for electoral materials meant for that day’s election.

Before the day of the elections, electoral materials were moved by the State Independent Electoral Commission, SIEC, to police stations in all council headquarters for safe keeping, Ibi inclusive. That had been the practice, even in the case of national elections. It always worked out well. Even in this case, everything looked perfectly right until what became a contest between the good and the bad took the centre state in Ibi in the early hours of the polling day. A group of politicians and their supporters belonging to the All Progressives Congress, APC, thought the best thing to do was to prevent the elections from taking place since they were sure that their candidate was unpopular and would ultimately lose if the election were allowed to hold. They devised a trick to achieve that. They arrived early at the gates leading into the police station in Ibi where electoral materials were being kept and blocked it, insisting that the materials wouldnot be moved out to polling venues. And so, the elections did not take place there.

When they were certain that it had become too late in the day to hold the elections, they vacated the entrance to the police station. At that point, the only option feasible was the postponement of the elections and the return of the materials to Jalingo. And that was what SIEC did. The incident which was condemned by many well-meaning Nigerians in and outside Taraba State, is a sad reminder of the stiff and unaccommodating attitude of our politicians to elections. That attitude is that all elections must end in their favour, otherwise, the process is demonised and truncated. That was what played out in Ibi on February 25. In case those who were behind those unfortunate events in Ibi haven’t realised yet, they need be told that they only succeeded in drawing back the hand of the clock and this will affect their council area in a negative way for a long time to come. Today, Ibi is the only council area still being administered by a care-taker committee.

But besides that incident, the council elections were peaceful, adjudged as very free and fair by electoral observers and other independent groups that witnessed it. Governor Ishaku was commended by the monitoring teams(and there were many of them on duty that period) for creating the atmosphere that enabled the success of polling. The National Orientation Agency, NOA, in Taraba State even wrote a commendation letter which was addressed to Governor Ishaku. In the letter, the Agency’s Taraba State director, Dr. Robert Gulkawi, said the governor demonstrated through the elections a rare “spirit of sportsmanship.” Dr Dulkawi said NOA officers who covered the elections submitted reports to the effect that the process was “incontestably transparent.” This, Gulkawi said stood out the elections as hugely credible, unstoppably convincing and widely acceptable.”

The contest was, no doubt, fierce with about ten registered political parties in the race. At the end of it all the ruling People’s Democratic Party, PDP, won in all the 15 local government council areas where the elections were held. It was a well-deserved victory for the party. The victories were seen in many quarters as evidence of Ishaku’s ever rising popularity rating in the political firmament of the state. It was the people’s way of saying “Thank You” for the marvelous job he has done on the roads, at the Jalingo Airport, in the provision of water to the state capital and other towns and communities, in repositioning educational institutions and in renovating hospitals and equipping them with drugs to improve the quality of healthcare delivery and in stabilising electricity power supply in some areas of the state. The party’s victory was also a way of acknowledging the regular payment of workers’ salaries by the Ishaku administration and many other things that the government has achieved in less than two years in office.

Those elected have already taken their seats in the various council areas. At their inauguration on Monday February 27, 2017, in Jalingo, Governor Ishaku urged the new council helmsmen to discharge their duties with humility and to ensure prudent application of resources. The event was witnessed by a cross section of PDP chieftains from all the council areas in the state. It was a happy ending to an exercise that people had feared would lead to unending crisis. Those fears failed to manifest. Rather, it further united the people behind the resolve to maintain peace. Some people, particularly, youths came out in their thousands in a solidarity rally with the Governor and the efforts he is making to put the state on the path of development.

  • Kebbi to conduct council poll in July

The Kebbi State Independent Electoral Commission (KESIEC) has released the time-table for the next local government elections in the state.

The Chairman of the commission, Hon. Aliyu Muhammed Mera, who disclosed this to reporters in Birnin-Kebbi, the state capital, said the election will take place in the 21 local government areas in July.

He said this will enable the political parties, stake holders and the general public to make the necessary preparations for the exercise.

He said nomination forms, contacts and other relevant documents pertaining to the election are available at the secretariat of the commission.

  • Council, others empower over 200 women

NO fewer than 200 women have benefited from an entrepreneurial/empowerment training held by Ejigbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

The four-day event, which held at the council’s premises, was held in partnership with The Progressive Women Advocacy Organisation and Inexhaustible Ocean Multipurpose Cooperative Society (Agbonmagbe).

The council’s Sole Administrator, Mr Ibrahim Adigun, said the  programme was aimed at ensuring that women in the LCDA were independent and resourceful, adding that when they are empowered, they would be able to meet their needs. He thanked the partners for their commitment, noting that a similar event was held last year.

Head of Administration of the council Mrs Iyabo Ogunyemi harped on women empowerment as a panacea to nation building. She charged the participants of good conduct during their stay.

The Progressive Women Advocacy Organisation President, Mrs Vivian Obi, said the objective of the group was to enrich their knowledge, keep women busy and be useful citizens, adding that an idle mind is the devil’s workshop. She urged the participants to avail themselves of the opportunity being provided by the council. “Whatever you will learn will be practical-oriented,’’ she said.

Managing Director Inexhaustible Ocean Multipurpose Cooperative Society Pastor Richardson Allen said at the end of the training, the trainees would get soft loans without collateral. He urged them to repay the loans which were coming from the Bank of Industry (BoI), adding that those who repaid would get double the amount next time. He recalled how he started the programme from his earnings until support came.

“The natural resources are the fertile land which can be used for agriculture and the large chunk of the youth is the human resources who would work on the farmland to generate revenue for government,” she said.

  • Council renames road for Tinubu

    Council renames road for Tinubu

All Progressives Congress (APC) National leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s trade mark cap and glasses were unveiled on Friday in Ojokoro, Lagos, as part of activities to mark 65th birthday. Tinubu was 65 last Wednesday.
Some party stalwarts and top government officials gathered at the Ojokoro Lacal Council Development Area (LCDA) for the unveiling of what was referred to as his symbol.
The council also renamed the Agbado Station Road Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu Road.
The symbol was unveiled by Tinubu’s daughter and the Iyaloja-General of Nigeria, Chief Folashade Tinubu-Ojo.
The council’s Sole Administrator, Dr Waleeh Ipaye, said the gesture was part of its council’s way of celebrating “our great leader.”
Ipaye said: “Ojokoro LCDA is one of the 37 LCDAs created by our dynamic leader when he was Lagos State Governor in 2003.
“In celebrating a good leader, we are doing justice to the present and coming generation as this will go a long way in inspiring the upcoming generation. You will agree with me that our Governor Emeritus is not only good at the management of materials and resources but equally in managing men and women. The samples of these are quite visible in all corners of Lagos State and Nigeria at large.”
Mrs Tinubu-Ojo hailed Ipaye for his strides in the council, saying “he (Ipaye) is doing great. Does any of our council chairmen have a choice not to perform? They don’t. All of them have to work hard to complement what the governor is doing.”
She urged members of the National Assembly to enlist the 37 LCDAs in the Constitution.

Osun council polls to hold before Dec

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has said local government elections will hold before December.

The governor dropped the hint in Osogbo, the state capital, at a workshop for information officers.

According to Aregbesola, this will spread good governance to the grassroots.

He challenged information officers to promote state activities, especially in the rural areas.

“What we have is a situation where most of our activities are under reported.

“You must work hard to become information specialists that we desire to provide good information to the public,” he said.

Aregbesola described the hues and cries following the state’s debt burden released by the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) as “insignificant to the achievements of his administration”.
