    Sugar Council projects 1.58mt for 2018

    The National Sugar Development Council (NSDC) has projected 1.58 metric tonnes (mt) for 2018, which is less than the 1.6 mt for this year.

    The Executive Secretary, NSDC, Latif Busari, made this known  during a media chat in Abuja. He stated the 1.58 mt will be shared among operators on the basis of their performance.

    He said: “In 2017 the projection was 1.6million metric tonnes, but in 2018 it has to drop due to the challenges facing sugar production.

    “The drop in metric tonnes was part of the attack on Noma, Adamawa Savannah sugar plantation, which is the only sugar plant in the country in operation presently.

    “The sugar company started production on November 4th 2017, and the attack on Noma happened on December 4th 2017, with the herdsmen destroying all the work that has been done in the three plantations. It is a very serious issue.

    “There will be serious challenge in production if the Noma, Adamawa savannah issue is not resolved on time. About three fields in the savannah are already burnt.”

    Busari said there foregn and local investors in the sugar industry, while productions are going on in mini plants all over the country.

    He, however, said this is not enough to meet demands. According to him, Nigeria presently has six brands of sugar. He therefore,  appealed to Nigerians to patronize made in Nigeria sugar.

  • Council to name road after slain activist

    Chairman Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Chairman Apostle Oloruntoba Oke yesterday said plan the road linking Ifako International School with College Road will be rename after the late human rights activist Kunle Fadipe.

    He said the honour was the least the council could do for the lawyer-turned activist, who impacted assisted the downtrodden in the council area greatly during his lifetime.

    “This honour we have no doubt would serve as a motivation to those of us still living to serve humanity and do everything to lift the less privileged,” Oke said.

    The bill to rename the road has passed the second reading at the council’s legislative house.

    The Chairman, while addressing stakeholders at a public hearing on the bills at the council’s area office, said some of the laws are to improve traffic flow and boost the council’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

    He listed bills to make some roads one way, and bill to introduce park and pay on some busy roads in the council as part of the bills he will assent to on Thursday.

  • Council rebuilds three roads, four drains

    The Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos has rebuilt three roads and four drains in the last 100 days.

    Its Chairman, Rasaq Olushola Ajala spoke yesterday in a chat with reporters.

    He said: “We completed four major drainage projects in Ago-Owu, Alhaji-Otta, Anuoluwapo and Opeloyeru streets, covering a total distance of 727 meters. We re-constructed three major roads namely, Araba, Ogunji and Ibukunolu streets; we also rehabilitate three roads namely Abiodun, Kumuyi and Fafolu streets. These are a few of our efforts in infrastructure in tandem with our promises to our people.”

    According to him, the business of governance is challenging, especially when the country is coming out of recession, hence, “the abundance of limitless demands from our constituents has been very daunting.

    “We engaged in massive sensitisation and advocacy, especially during the outbreak of the dreadful diseases such as Lassa Fever, Monkey pox etc. We also introduced a community based health insurance scheme in partnership with the state government.

    “We partnered several well-meaning organisations to bring some health benefits like immunisation, eye screening, ante-natal delivery, post-natal, free medical treatments, free blood pressure check and the treatment of hypertension amongst others to our people.”

    In waste and sanitation, he said that his administration had invested heavily on regular mopping up of refuse, sensitisation programmes, desilting of drains, purchase of sanitary equipment etc.

    On education, the council boss has set up a committee to come up with plans to meet the academic, structural and training needs of schools based on data obtained by the committee.

    “Government belongs to all. Citizens should play their complementary roles in terms of meeting civic duties and responsibilities like the payment of taxes, rates, levies,” Ajala said.

  • PDP wins Akwa Ibom council polls

    •APC rejects results

    The Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) has declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) winner of last Saturday’s local government election.

    PDP won the 31 chairmanship and 329 councillorship seats in the election.

    AKISIEC’s Chairman Aniedi Ikoiwak announced the result in a statement yesterday.

    The statement reads: “The election was contested by 12 political parties and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won the 31 chairmanship and 329 councillorship seats.

    “This statement confirms the announcement/declarations made by the authorised Returning Officers in the wards and local government areas.

    “Details of scores, as submitted by our Field Officers, will be provided by the Field Operations/Logistics Department of the commission.

    “The commission thanks stakeholders and the people for the good conduct exhibited during and after the elections.”

    The newly elected officials will get their certificates today.

    But the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected the election results, describing it as a sham.

    A statement by the Chairman Dr Amadu Atai and Secretary Dr Effiong Etuk, described the election as “falling in standard” of what was expected. It called for its cancellation.

  • Council begins cholera awareness campaign

    Following the confirmation of cholera outbreak in Araromi Community, the Department of Health, Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area has swung into action to contain its further spread.

    Three individuals have died as a result of the disease.

    The council’s chairman, Mayor Dele Oshinowo told the residents that the era of apportioning blame to government is gone, saying his administration is running an inclusive government where everyone is a partaker to ensure the right thing is done.

    He commiserated with the community over the loss of lives.

    His vice, who doubles as the Supervisor of Health, Alhaji Mufa Okusi appealed to residents to see the cleanliness of their environment as a non-negotiable task.

    Medical Officer of Health (MOH), Dr Adeleke Awolesi urged residents of the affected community to embrace a hygienic lifestyle.

    He enjoined them to ensure the source of their water is clean, warning against defecating indiscriminately.

    The council distributed antibiotic drugs and sanitisers to aid proper handwashing.

  • Council boss lists achievements in 100 days

    Chairman, Eredo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) Mr Adeniyi Saliu has reassured the residents of more developmental projects.

    He disclosed this while listing his administration’s achievements in 100 days.

    The council, he said, has recruited additional Gardeners and upgrading of their salaries from N10,000 to N20,000 monthly.

    “We have constructed six ultra-modern toilets with borehole and electricity generating set to power the borehole at Mojoda market. We have renovated the Ajebowale market at Ibowon as well as the housing department in secretariat administrative block,” he said.

    He added that the administration has offered free eye screening and given free eye glasses to women and children, adding that Local Vigilante Group has also been trained.

    He noted that his administration would continue to develop the community through agriculture.

    He said: “Our focus has been to make use of the available agrarian land resources in our council for agricultural purposes and our main thrust shall be livestock farming.

    “We would continue to develop the markets. We would develop security, tourism and ensure our environment is clean, healthy and well protected.

    “In the health sector, we have upgraded some of our primary health centres to meet the health challenges of our people and in the education sector, we have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigeria opportunity Industrial Cooperation for 15 students to be sponsored and admitted in January into different vocations.

    “Also, the council library will be rehabilitated and necessary books would be stocked in for proper use. This administration has hosted campaign against cultism in Secondary Schools. We would also empower our people through our Poverty Alleviation programmes,” he said.

  • Council gets new executives

    New executives of Ikeja Local Government have taken their oath of office.

    The Chairman, Mojeed Balogun, advised the executives to work as a team to get results.

    He urged them to see Ikeja as an entity which needs to be promoted beyond their personal needs.

    Secretary of the council Comrade Akim Dauda said it is a privilege to be called to serve. He promised to work with the legislature and executive to achieve the council’s objectives. Supervisor for Woman Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Mrs. Adenike Yusuf promised to champion education and skills acquisition for women and youths.

    Supervisor for Environment Mrs. Olutoyin Obaseki said Ikeja will not be tagged a dirty environment as she will complement efforts of the state and local government towards attaining a cleaner Lagos.

    Mr. Taiwo Daniel, supervisor for Education, promised to improve education by giving out free GCE forms and school uniforms to pupils.

  • Shippers’ Council recovers over N300m for govt

    The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) recovered over N300 million in 2016, following complaints from stakeholders on alleged sharp practices at the ports, it was learnt at the weekend.

    NSC Director of Regulatory Services, Mrs. I. A. Ezedinma, spoke in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, at a seminar organised by the council for businessmen.

    The theme of the seminar was: The Importance of Port Economic Regulation as a tool for Port Efficiency and Cost Effectiveness in International Trade.

    Mrs. Ezedinma, who spoke through an official of the agency, Mrs. Juliana Saka, said NSC handled 84 complaints from stakeholders and recovered the $1,098,898, the equivalent of over N300 million.

    Apart from the recovered amount in dollars, Mrs. Ezedinma said some other money recovered in Nigerian currency within the period was N15,437,265.60.

    She assured the forum that the NSC was better empowered to assist states to export their products and repositioned to adequately regulate the ports sector to make exporters get better rewards for their sweat.

    Mrs. Ezedinma pledged the council’s readiness to fully actualise the mandate given to it by the Federal Government towards making the nation’s ports the sub-regional hub and Africa’s international logistic centre.

    Surulere Council workers hold forum

    The National Union of Local Government Workers (NULGE) in Surelere, Lagos State, has held its quarterly forum. The event coincided with the birthday of the council Chairman, Hon Tajudeen Yussuf Ajide, who attended the event.

    The workers praised the chairman for the progress recorded so far in the council, especially for his welfarist policies. They listed them as: approval of financial assistance to workers; renovation and furnishing of offices; equipping the clinic; provision of a staff bus and making the premises clean, among others.

    Ajide thanked the workers for the honour done him by celebrating with him. He promised to meet the workers’ demands and make their welfare paramount. He urged revenue officers to discharge their duties without fear or favour, and promised to employ more street sweepers and address drivers and guards shortage.

  • Council build boreholes, fixes health centre

    Epe Local Government Chairman Adedoyin Adesanya, has built two boreholes and rehabilitated the health centre.

    Adesanya said this at a function to mark 100 days in office.

    The council, he said, installed glass and aluminum sliding windows to measure up to the state standards.

    He said the council’s Multipurpose Block has been re-roofed to create a conducive atmosphere for the council officials in discharging their duties.

    “Our legislators are now having befitting office furniture to carry out their legislative businesses. On staff welfare, we have been prompt in the payment of non-pensionable staff salaries before the release of monthly allocation by the state government and bonuses. My plan to increase the Internally Generated Revenue was made possible with this synergy and strong alliance,” he said.

    According to him, 250 people comprising artisans, widows and aged people have been empowered. Five physically-challenged persons were given brand new wheel chairs.

    “I sunk boreholes with two new electricity generating sets to support the pumping of the water, in Zumratul Islamiyya Primary and Solomon Memorial Primary Schools, Epe. These have actually brought relief to them.

    “I eradicated illegal garages along our roads by driving all the road unions to the main garage at Aiyetoro. Road side street tradings at Aiyedoto market were put to an end to forestall loss of lives and properties,” he said.

    Adesanya thanked Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for his developmental strides in Ep. He also thanked the people of Epe for their supports.
