  • Council chief dismisses ‘suspension’

    Council chief dismisses ‘suspension’

The crisis rocking the Surulere Local Government Area of Lagos State heightened yesterday as its councillors reportedly sent a letter to the chairman, Tajudeen Ajide, suspending him from office indefinitely.

A source said the “suspension” was aimed at denying the chairman of the opportunity of being appointed the council’s executive secretary after the expiration of his administration in October.

The councillors were alleged to be acting the scripts of two prominent lawmakers representing the area at higher levels who have been at loggerheads with the chairman over some issues.

Yesterday’s move, the source added, might not be unconnected with the success of Ajide’s recent poverty alleviation programme despite the said lawmakers’ effort to abort it.

In a telephone chat, however, Ajide, confirmed the incident, but said he was “on top of the situation.”

He said the councillors had earlier asked him to defend himself of some phoney allegations today, adding that he was surprised to receive another letter suspending him from office indefinitely yesterday.

Ajide, who said he remained undeterred, described the development as unconstitutional, insisting that he remained the chairman of the council.

He urged residents, especially his supporters, to be calm and go about their legitimate businesses, assuring that the matter would be resolved urgently.

    •Assembly crisis enters local govt

The crisis rocking the Edo State House of Assembly has ‘spread’ to the legislative arm of Oredo Local Government Area.

Four of the 12 councillors attempted to remove the House Leader, Monday Oboiga.

The fracas that ensued led to the invasion of the council by armed thugs in the meeting and descended on the councillors.

The Chairman, Osaro Obazee, fled when the thugs stormed the secretariat.

It was gathered that trouble started when the councillor representing Ward 10, Dan Ize-Iyamu, moved a motion of impeachment and was supported by the only Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) councillor, Monday Okato.

An argument ensued and thugs stormed the meeting and pounced on the councillors after which they took away the mace.

A source said: “I don’t know how to describe what happened here today. It was every man for himself, when the hoodlums came. The council Chairman, Osaro Obaze, also fled the secretariat.

“If you look at what is happening now, the chairman is the actual target. The plan is that if they remove the speaker, they will begin impeachment proceedings against him.

“This crisis still boils down to the recent defection of some All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftains to the PDP. Some persons believe that their loyalists cannot continue to hold sway since they still owe allegiance to their leaders.”

But the chairman denied fleeing the secretariat during the crisis.

He said: “I just stepped out when some persons came to the legislative chamber, but immediately I got wind of it, I came back. I am an APC member and I am man enough to tell people where I am.”

  • Councillors, Ogoni leaders back Amaechi

    Councillors, Ogoni leaders back Amaechi

Nigeria Councillors’ Forum (NCF) and leaders of Ogoni have pledged their support for Amaechi.

The chairman of the forum, Mr. Lesor Baranu Nwigbaranee, representing Ward 15 of Khana Constitutuency, at the end of its meeting in Port Harcourt yesterday, expressed their unwavering support for Amaechi, whose administration’s performance they rated very high, with a 95 per cent mark.

The councillors said they were expressing the minds of millions of Rivers people at the grassroots whom they represent and daily interact with.

They said their reaction was borne out of their belief that “except strategic stakeholders speak up, the wishes, aspirations and rights of the people of Rivers State as guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution as amended, may be unjustly trampled upon”.

They dissociated themselves from any plan to cause a breakdown of law and order in the state and make the Amaechi administration unstable.

“We, and indeed the people we represent, shall not be part of any acts or actions instigated to cause breakdown of law and order in Rivers State. We are opposed to any measures, especially made in secret or through any uncanny means, to torpedo the Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi-led administration in the state.

“We are committed to the peace and development of Nigeria, the aspirations of the Peoples Democratic Party and its programmes and policies, especially with the mandate given to Chief G. U. Ake on March 17, 2012 as a cornerstone,” they said.

Not pleased with “undemocratic forces” outside the state heating up the polity, the councillors urged political stakeholders in the state to support Amaechi to achieve more for the people.

The forum said: “We condemn the heating up of the political atmosphere in the state with anti-democratic antics and call on political stakeholders to support elected representatives to do their work diligently.”

“We, as members of the Nigeria Councillors’ Forum, Rivers State Chapter, hereby score the Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi-led administration 95% in its overall performance thus far”.

They criticised those attempting to undermine Amaechi’s victory in the recent Nigeria Governors’ Forum election and expressed loyalty to President Goodluck Jonathan.

“We condemn every attempt by undemocratic forces to undermine the hard-earned victory of Governor Amaechi as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, which has been proclaimed free and fair by Nigerians from all walks of life.”

“We remain loyal to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, and urge him to remain focused in his bid to transform Nigeria. In the same vein, we congratulate and identify with the developmental strides of Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi in education, health, agriculture, roads and human capital development which are very conspicuous in all the wards of the state.”

The Councillors’ Forum urged the Rivers State Governor not to be distracted and push ahead to make more unequalled achievements for Rivers people.

“Never before have we seen a political administration stay focused on delivering democracy dividends to its constituents. We will, therefore, stand by the Amaechi through thick and thin,” they concluded.

  • Court sentences councillors to three months imprisonment

A State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, yesterday sentenced four principal officers of Ahoada East Legislative Council to three months imprisonment for disobeying court order.

The officers are the former Leader, Emeka Godein, Deputy Leader, Goodlife Aliegbe, Chief Whip, Onwudiwe Abraham and the former Clerk, Aaron Odu.

The convicts were found guilty of contempt of court by Justice George Omereji on February 25, but were allowed to go on bail to purge themselves of the offences they were charged with before April 15. The court adjourned for their sentencing.

Some members of the legislative council in June 2012 began the process of impeaching the Vice-Chairman of the local government, Britain Ewor, on alleged criminal involvements while in overseas.

On getting the hint, Ewor in a motion dated July 18 2012 and filed in the court on July 23 2012, challenged the planned action of the members and sought for an interlocutory injunction restraining them from further action.

The court granted his application on June 27, 2012, and ordered them to stay further actions or proceedings in respect of the matter being challenged in the action, including the purported impeachment proceedings.

Despite the court order, however, the respondents on July 5, 2012 impeached the applicant (Ewor) and locked up his office.

Following this, the court in a ruling on February 25 convicted the accused persons and ruled that:

“They (respondent/contemnors) shall with immediate effect rescind and vacate the impeachment of the applicant.

“All the suspended salaries, entitlements, allowances and remunerations of the applicant shall be paid to him (applicant), in full.

“That the respondents/contemnor, who have been found guilty of the contempt of this court are to be allowed to go on the condition that two sureties have to take them on bail in the sum of N2million, four passport photographs, a sworn affidavit of means each and address to be confirmed by the court registrar.

“I shall adjourn this case to see if the respondent and the respondent/contemnor have purged themselves of the contempt of this court.”

However, rather than complying with the court order on the resumed sitting on April 15, they informed the court of having appealed their conviction.

The court re-adjourned the case till yesterday, insisting that they should comply with the order of the court.

Yesterday, Omereji sentenced the accused to three months imprisonment with hard labour.

He did not allow any option of fine.
