  • Ex-UNILAG VC counsels workers on integrity

For about 90 minutes, Prof Tolu Odugbemi returned to the University of Lagos (UNILAG) where he served as vice chancellor (2007-2010) to give valuable advice to registry and bursary workers recently.

The programme, “An Hour with the Doyen”, an initiative of the bursary and registry units of the university, provides opportunity for workers of both units to learn from past administrators of the institution.

The Senate Chambers of the institution was packed such that a large number of workers of both units had to stay in the foyer while Odugbemi, spoke on “The Pivotal Role of Administration in a University – Reflections”.

Odugbemi, who also served as the vice chancellor of the Ondo State University of Science and Technology (OSUSTECH) after UNILAG, underscored the importance of imbibing such values as honesty, hard work, team work, and integrity, which he said were crucial to the smooth running of a university.

He shared his experiences as an administrator with the audience, which also included some principal officers like the Registrar, Mrs Taiwo Ipaye; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Research), Prof Toyin Ogundipe; the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof Duro Oni, and the Provost, College of Medicine, Prof Folashade Ogunsola and other dons.

Prof Odugbemi advised the workers to ensure they put the interest of the community above self in all their official dealings as selfishness causes underdevelopment.

“The Nigerian education sector has numerous challenges.  Discipline is very important in attaining any significant achievement in society.  Nigeria is at cross-roads.  Instead of our present educational system helping to propel us forward in development, we face a gloomy state of decay because of wrong ideas and teachings that made ‘self’ instead of ‘society’ the centre of development.  The over-development of ‘self’ in positive ways would not have harmed the nation but the greed attached to ‘self-development’ has,” he said.

Participants told The Nation they learnt a lot from the lecture.

Mrs Adeola Akinyeye, senior assistant registrar with the senate, said: “I also learnt about integrity, courage – that these are the values that we need to imbibe as administrators and they will help us to contribute our quota to the development of the university. So I intend to do that and also make use of his word of wisdom in my day-to-day activities.”

Prof Ogundipe said: “I learnt that you must put integrity, sincerity and be purposeful in whatever we are doing to move the university forward. The university is to help the community and the society the other way round, so if there are problems in the society the university should be able to help.”

Prof Ogunsola said the Odugbemi’s lecture re-instated what she already knew about integrity and other values.

“I have known him for a long time and understand the importance of the things he mentioned – courage in particular and integrity. In Nigeria you may have integrity but you will constantly have to defend it because everything around you is struggling to break it,” she said.

Oluwaseun Ajidabga of the Information Unit said many people came to hear Odugbemi because of his integrity while in office.

“The turnout has never been this high in the history of an hour with the doyen.  The people who were outside where more than the people who were inside, which goes to show the love they have for the former vice chancellor; and I am sure people will put what he has said to good use,” he said.

Dr Ipaye said the programme has been invaluable in tapping into the knowledge of veteran administrators.

“We felt that inviting veterans to come and share with us their experience in the office and to receive their guidance will stimulate most of us.  We have been having very stimulating experiences from the vice chancellors, registrars.  It is an opportunity to tap from their wealth of experience so that we can work towards an enduring legacy,” she said.

  • CHARLES OPUTA COUNSELS SINGLE LADIES

    CHARLES OPUTA COUNSELS SINGLE LADIES

THE words of our elders are words of wisdom is a popular African aphorism once popular on a government radio station back in the days. And Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy confirmed it in a Facebook post ahead of the forthcoming Valentine Day celebrations. The Area fada spoke from his wealth of experience in a post directed at single ladies, advising them not to feel negative in any way if they do not have a man in their life as their ‘Val’, to take them out, buy them gifts, and the like.

As he put it, “Few days to Valentine day, and some lady out there is arrested in her thought. In her thought she has this running in her mind, ‘I don’t have a lover, I don’t think any man will want to take me out on that day.’ My special advice to you young lady. KNOCK IT OFF!!!!!!!”

Disabusing the often mistaken notion that the lack of a relationship, or absence of a man in a lady’s life means that she is deficient in some way, he  added that material things should not be one’s source of happiness, or proof of how beautiful or endowed she is. He said, “Don’t let that thought make you feel like crap. Valentine gifts, and outing doesn’t validate how cute, sexy, and appreciated you are.”

Going further, he enjoined single ladies to banish the thought of depression that some suffer due to loneliness, but enjoined them to put on their best, get into circulation, and not give up. “Take away that mindset from your beautiful soul because the worst loneliness is not to be comfortable with yourself. No matter how you feel, GET UP, DRESS UP, SHOW UP, AND NEVER GIVE UP. I hope this speaks to any lady out there who feels like a loner. Be your #WCW”, he quipped.

  • Eguavoen counsels Arsenal loyalists at Heineken Champions Planet

Eguavoen counsels Arsenal loyalists at Heineken Champions Planet

As all the matches of the 2nd leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16’s get underway from next week, visitors and consumers at Heineken Champions Planet are still relishing their experiences and the outcome of the first leg matches.

However, consolidating on its brand role by engaging consumers with the matches and other innovative games, Heineken hosted another football legend. It was the turn of former Super Eagles coach, Austin ‘Cerezo’ Eguavoen to be engaged by visitors of the Heineken Champions Planet with the matches of the night and his best moments on the national team. Moments after taking the ‘Hot Seat’, Eguavoen, who guided Super Eagles of Nigeria to win bronze at the 2006 African Cup of Nations in Egypt, told the large gathering of mainly Arsenal FC loyalists to brace up with the reality of a likely exit of their team in this season’s competition.

“We have to face the reality that the team has a high mountain to climb especially against a compact Bayern Munich side that dominated play all through the night at the Emirates Stadium in London,” the defender who was part of the AFCON victory for Nigeria in 1994 in Tunisia said.

While his remarks were a delight to other rival fans of the North London club who were in the house, famous Disc Jockey Jimmy Jatt and other invited guests with the army of Arsenal supporters were initially down cast but were quick to brace up and with the hope of turning around the huge deficit when they travel to Alliaz Arena in Munich on the 13th of March for the return leg.

“The UEFA Champions League has thrown some funny results in the past and there could still be hope for Arsenal if they go into the return leg match with the right attitude and Bayern fail to play at their optimum,” Eguavoen remarked.

An elated consumer remarked that: “AC Milan appeared to have copied the tactics of Chelsea and Celtic-the only sides to have beaten Barcelona in their past 25 matches in Europe -by soaking up waves of attacks before hitting back on counter breaks!”

World Footballer of the Year, Lionel Messi was completely anonymous through out the match with only one shot at goal by Andres Iniesta in spite of their domination. While goals from Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sulley Muntari (both from Ghana) in the second half wrapped up historic celebration at the Heineken Champions Planet and Milan city.

The surprise results of the night in all the four matches also had an unfavourable effect on points scored by consumers and visitors who played the StarPlayer app. With very few goal opportunities that later transformed into reality, many of players could not anticipate correctly.

With the matches becoming more complicated, many of them will have to sharpen their innate anticipatory skills when the all-important second leg matches are played next month in order to win premium Heineken gift items.

The fun and excitement of this season are not limited to the Heineken Champions Planet alone because videos episodes of visitors experience will be broadcast across the nation on major TV stations. Live reports from the Heineken Champions Planet are also available on Nigeria Info Live radio commentaries and twitter at Heineken_NG. Heineken consumers in Nigeria can be part of the exclusive experience by visiting any selected Heineken world class bar or taking part in the quizzes on Heineken face book page.
