  • Man docked for breach of peace

    A 27-year-old man, Tobi Olowu, was on Thursday arraigned in an Ota Magistrates ‘Court for alleged breach of peace.

    Olowu, who lives at No. 28 Akintunde St., Iyana-Ilogbo, Ota, is facing a charge of breach of peace.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Tsav Dominic, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Feb. 26 at about 11.30a.m. along Ajibode Road, Ota.

    Dominic said that the accused conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by threatening one Victor Olalere, that “his mother will bury him.’’

    He said that the offence contravened Section 86 of the Criminal Code Vol. 1, Laws of Ogun, 2006.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Senior Magistrate, Mrs F. A. Ojelade, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till March 13 for hearing.

    Producer drags Silverbird Cinema to court

    Producer of award-winning Nollywood movie, ‘The Boss is Mine’, Okechukwu Oku has sued the management of Silverbird Cinemas, Uyo for breach of exhibition contract, demanding N10 million as damages.

    Explaining the rationale behind the move, Oku said the screening of the movie was scheduled to hold at the Silverbird Cinema, Uyo in early 2016 but the management of the outfit failed to live up to its bidding. He stated that to the chagrin of guests who turned up in large numbers to grace the premiere, the cinema failed to produce the needed electricity to power the cinema.

    “I was embarrassed to say the least. Everybody we expected was present. We were all seated by 3pm, expecting the film to come on when the lights went out. When we approached the management of the cinema, they told us that their generator was faulty. This lingered on till 9pm. By then, the guests had left,” Oku lamented.

    He revealed that since then, he has sought the attention of the outfit to settle the issue amicably but to no avail.

    ‘The Boss is Mine’ is the story of an enterprising young man who comes to a decision to employ a cleaner and a cook in order to ease his fiancée’s return.

    A production of Oracle Films, the movie stars the likes of Imeh Bishop Umoh, Mike Godson, Daniella Okeke, Mary Ogbonna, Sapphire Obi, Osita Chukwu and a host of others.

    Despite the setback, its lead act, Imeh Umoh recently won the best actor in a comedy at the 2017 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award for his role in the movie.

    The actor beat Ayo Makun (A Trip to Jamaica), Bovi Ugboma (It’s Her Day), Blossom Chukwujekwu (Ghana Must Go), Mike Ezuruonye (Brother Jekwu), Okey Uzoeshi (The Life of a Nigerian Couple) and Amechi Muonagor (Meet the In-Laws) to win the award.

  • Cart pusher charged with stabbing colleague over N500

    A 28-year-old cart pusher, Jegede Adetayo, was brought before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday in Lagos for  allegedly stabbing a man with a broken bottle over N500.

    Jegede is facing a charge of assault occasioning harm.

    The  prosecutor, Sgt. Ihiehie Lucky had told the court that on March 3 the complainant, Idris Ibrahim, also a cart pusher, came to Ogudu Police Station to report the incident.

    Ihiehie said the complainant had invited Jegede on March 2 to follow him to carry some iron rods at Maryland but the accused refused in spite of the promise to give him N1,000.

    “In the process, a boy popularly known as Chelsea, decided to go with the complainant.

    “The complainant said when they came back,  he gave them N500 each and they all left.

    “The accused  woke up at about 9.30 p.m. to demand the balance of N500 and after much argument, he took a broken bottle and stabbed the complainant, ” he said.

    The accused, however, denied the charge.

     

    In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule-Amzat, granted the accused bail in the sum of N40, 000 with two sureties who must be gainfully employed.

    she adjourned the case to March 27.

  • Man arrested for raping stepdaughter

    Police on Wednesday in Niger state arrested a 45-year-old-man, over alleged rape of his three-year-old stepdaughter.

    The suspect was arrested in Kundu, a village in Rafi Local Government Area of the state.

    Abdullahi Mayaki, Police Inspector attached to the state Child Rights Protection Agency, said that the mother of the girl, Malama Fatima Bawa, reported the matter to the agency.

    He said that the suspect, however, denied the allegation during investigation, claiming that he only intervened whenever his wife beat the girl.

    But Bawa had told the agency that she caught her husband sexually abusing her daughter after he approached her for sex at night and she refused him.

    “My husband likes sex too much, so I chased him out of the room in the night and locked the door.

    “It was after I chased him out that I heard my daughter, who was sleeping in the parlour, crying.

    “I quickly ran to her only to see my husband abusing my daughter sexually.

    “I am a breast feeding mother and I spend the whole of my day taking care of the children, yet my husband does not allow me to rest,” she told the agency in her statement.

    Bawa alleged that she saw blood stained and semen on the girl’s body and informed her brother in-laws wife about the incident who advised her to take the girl to the hospital.

    The Director-General of the agency, Hajiya Mariam Kolo, said that the victim would be treated in the hospital.

    Kolo also said that the suspect would be charged to court in accordance with Section 18 of the Child Rights Law.

    The Director-General described the act as ‘ungodly’, saying that the state government would no longer condone any form of violence against children and women.

     

  • Security guard arraigned for stealing from blind employer

    A security guard, Miracle Lamber, who allegedly locked up his blind employer in a room and bolted with his N50,000 cash, was on Wednesday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    The 21-year-old accused was arraigned before Magistrate Mrs Y.O. Ekogbule on a two-count charge of breach of peace and stealing.

    Lamber, who resides with the complainant, however, denied the charges and was admitted to bail of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Clement Ikuoimose, said that the accused committed the offences on Oct. 18, 2016, in Ifako-Ijaye, Lagos.

    Ikuoimose said that the accused stole N50,000 belonging to his employer, Mr Ayo Fagbemila, and ran away to Anambra.

    “The accused, who was employed as a security guard and house keeper to the complainant, disappeared with his money after only two months of employment.

    “The accused conducted his self in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by locking up the complainant in a room and going away with the key without even considering his condition.

    “Fortunately for the complainant, the man who introduced the accused for employment, came to visit him.

    “When he discovered that the complainant was locked up inside one of his rooms, the man broke the door to gain entrance into the room.

    “The accused was arrested after four months of his disappearance.”

    The prosecutor said that the offences contravened sections 166 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    If found guilty of stealing, the accused could be sentenced to three years’ imprisonment, according to the provisions of Section 285.

    Magistrate Ekogbule adjourned mention of the case until March 22.

  • Man, docked over alleged motorcycle theft

    A 45-year-old man, Olutan Adekunle, who allegedly stole a motorcycle valued at N230,000, was on Wednesday charged before an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun.

    Adekunle, who lives at No. 26 Owolabi St., Iyana-Iyesi, Ota, is facing a two-count charge bordering on stealing.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Chudu Gbesi, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Jan.5 at about 12.45.p.m.at No. 5, Holy Ghost Avenue, Iloye, Ota.

    Gbesi said the accused collected the motorcycle on credit from one Babatunde Oluwaseun, and promised that he would pay him N7, 000 weekly, an agreement he did not fulfill.

    “All efforts made by the complainant to get his money or the motorcycle proved abortive,’’ he said.

    The offences contravened Sections 383(1) and 390(9) of the Criminal Law of Ogun, 2006.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Senior Magistrate, Mr S. O. Banwo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    He said the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and should be gainfully employed.

    Banwo said the sureties should show evidence of tax payment to Ogun Government.

    The case was adjourned till March 16 for hearing. (NAN)

    Husband to court: I beat my wife when she flouts my instructions

    An estranged husband, Clifford Monday, on Wednesday admitted in an  Akure Customary Court that he only beat his wife, Bukola, whenever she flouted his instructions.

    Clifford made this known when he testified in a divorce petition filed by the wife.

    He told the the court that Bukola was the main cause of the misunderstanding they had in the union.

    He also admitted he destroyed his wife’s property, adding that his wife used tricks to extort money from him.

    Ealier, the petitioner, urged the court to dissolve the 11-year-old marriage for alleged constant beating, drunkenness, promiscuity and insensitivity to her.

    Bukola gave an instance when the respondent beat her during her second pregnancy to stupor and attempted to abort the pregnancy but her mother intervened.

    She said that the respondent always raised suspicion on all her movements, and had abandoned her and the three children of the marriage.

    The President of the court, Mr Ayodele Omotola, held that the evidences before the court showed there was no marriage between the two parties.

    Omotola noted that the court’s priority and consideration were on the products of the union.

    He, therefore, dissolved the union and ordered the respondent to pay N10,000 monthly to the court for the upkeep of the children.

    He further said that the respondent would be responsible for the education of the children.

    The president awarded custody of the children to the petitioner and gave the respondent unhindered access to the children.

    He said that both parties would be responsible for the medical and clothings of the kids. (NAN)

  • I am guilty as charged – Rapist

    “I am guilty as charged,” a rapist,  27-year-old Samuel Adedeji told a Lagos court on Tuesday.

    Adedeji, a factory worker, had entered a guilty plea when he was hauled up before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on a charge of rape.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Taiwo Akanni, remanded Adedeji, who resides at Nkem Igborosun, Mowo via Badagry at Kirikiri Prison pending sentence at the next date of adjournment.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Clifford Ogu, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Feb. 8 at his  apartment.

    According to him, the accused lured the 20-year-old woman into his apartment with a promise to assist in securing a job for her.

    “Immediately the girl entered the room, Adedeji shut the door  and raped her.”

    The offence contravened Section 259 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that sexual assault by penetration carries life imprisonment.

    The case has been fixed for March 20.

  • Alleged rape of housekeeper : Two brothers get N400, 000 bail

    Two brothers , Emmanuel Anyanwu and Okechukwu Anyanwu, were on Tuesday brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court charged with raping their mother’s 13-year-old housekeeper.

    They were, however, released on a bail of N400,000.

    The accused, 26-year-old Emmanuel, an applicant, and 22-year-old Okechukwu,  a student, both reside at 17, Babudu Bello St., Ishashi in Berger on the outskirts of Lagos.

    They are facing charges for conspiracy and rape.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Clifford Ogu told the court that the offences were committed sometime in December 2016 at the apartment of the accused.

    “The accused raped a 13-year-old girl who is their mother ‘s housekeeper several times and because of this, the girl ran away from the house.

    “On one of the occasions, the girl was rescued by a good Samaritan who saw her in the night and took her to a police station, ” Ogu said.

    The offences contravened Sections 259 and 409 of the  Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the offence carries life imprisonment.

    The accused, however pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Taiwo Akanni, in her ruling, granted the accused a bail of N200,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

    Sher directed that the case file should be duplicated and a copy sent to the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for  advice and adjourned the case to March 20 . (NAN)

  • Driver in court for defiling neighbour ‘s daughter

    A 50-year-old driver,Covenant Dako, on Tuesday appeared in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for alleged defilement of his neighbour ‘s 10-year-old daughter.

    Dako, who resides at 22 Road, Festac Town, Lagos, is charged with defilement.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Clifford Ogu, told the court that the offence was committed on Feb. 3 and Feb. 6 at the accused residence.

    Ogu said that on Feb. 3, the accused lured the victim, a 10-year-old girl into his room, with the pretext of sending her on an errand.

    “The accused defiled the girl and threatened to kill her if she talk.

    “On Feb. 6, the accused called the girl again into his room and was about to molest her, when a neighbour who was peeping through the window raised an alarm,” he said.

    The offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Taiwo Akanni, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Akanni adjourned the case till March 20 for Director of Public Prosecution’s advise.(NAN)
