    Man arraigned for attempted kidnap of 14-year-old in Lagos

    A 40-year-old man, Benjamin Ezekwesili, on Tuesday appeared before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos over an alleged attempt to kidnap a 14-year-old boy.

    Ezekwesili, a resident of No. 110, Eleli St., Ojuelegba, Surulere in Lagos, was arraigned before a Chief Magistrate, Mrs M.O. Adejuwon, but pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Cousin Adams told the court that the accused committed the offence on July 27 at 10.30 a.m. on Randle Avenue, Surulere.

    Adams said the accused had tried to push his victim, Samuel Omorogbe, 14, into his vehicle in a bid to kidnap him when his mother sent him on an errand to get some foodstuff.

    The offence contravened Section 4 of the Kidnapping Prohibition Law of Lagos State,2017.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the offence life imprisonment or capital punishment.

    Olajuwon admitted Ezekwesili to a bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum who must provide evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Further hearing in the case has been fixed for Sept. 9.

    Man docked for allegedly pushing compatriot to drown in lagoon

    A tailor, Sulaimon Babatunde, was charged before an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly pushing a man to drown in the Lagos Lagoon.

    Babatunde, 24, who resides at No. 135, Isale Gambari St., in Ilorin, Kwara, was docked on charges of conspiracy and murder.

    Magistrate Helen Omisore ordered that the accused should remain behind bars for the next 30 days, pending an legal advice from the office of the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions.

    Earlier the Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Cousin Adams, told court that the offences were committed on June 5 at about 10.00 p.m. at Carter Bridge on Lagos Island.

    He alleged that the accused had beaten the deceased, whose name was simply given as Ahmed severely before dumping him into the lagoon to die.

    Adams explained that the victim and the accused had previoulsy been members of a cult in Kwara.

    “Babtunde claimed that the deceased had caused the death of his two months old baby sometime in January and upon sighting him, he solicited the help of two of his friends, who are now at large.

    “The trio bundled Ahmed into a dark corner where they beat him up before carrying him to the lagoon side and throwing him inside,” the prosecutor stated.

    According to him, the offences contravene Sections 165 and 233 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Babatunde’s plea was not taken by the court.

    The magistrate ordered that the accused should be remanded in custody.

    She adjourned the matter until July 24.

  • Entertainer charged with raping 20-year-old student in Lagos

    An 38-year-old entertainer, Christopher Agboro, on Monday appeared before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos charged with raping and assaulting his female friend.

    He was, however, released on a N500, 000 bail.

    The Magistrate, Mrs K.A. Ariyo, who gave the ruling, also granted the accused responsible sureties in like sum.

    She said one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the accused and directed that a copy of the file should be duplicated and sent to the State Director of Public Prosecutions for advice.

    The accused is facing a two-count charge of assault and unlawful sexual intercourse. He, however, pleaded not guilty the charges.

    But the Prosecutor, Insp. Cousin Adams told the court that the accused committed the offences on June 8 at 11. 10 a.m. at No. 54b, Wegbo St., Iwaya in Yaba.

    He said the accused tricked the 20-year-old student into his apartment and tore her trousers before raping her.

    “He pretended that he wanted to have a talk with the complainant in his car, and when she entered the car, he drove off to his apartment where he allegedly raped her.”

    The prosecutor also alleged that the accused hit the girl with an object on the head which weakened her.

    The offences contravened Sections 171 and 258 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised)

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that rape carries a penalty of life imprisonment under the Criminal Law.

    The case was adjourned until July 26

  • Teenage remanded in prison for stabbing brother-in-law to death

    An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Monday ordered a cobbler, Sulaiman Hassan, to be remanded in Ikoyi Prison for allegedly stabbing his brother-in-law to death with a kitchen knife.

    The 18-year-old Hassan, whose address was not provided, is facing a charge of murder.

    The court did not take the plea of the accused as he was ordered to be kept behind the bars pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    The Magistrate, Mrs. Helen Omisore, ruled: “As the court does not have the jurisdiction to prosecute such matters, the accused is to be remanded in prison for the next 30 days pending advice from the office of the State Director of Public Prosecutions.”

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Cousin Adams, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Feb. 27 at about noon at Rimax Estate, Meiran, a suburb of Lagos on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

    He alleged that the accused stabbed his brother-in-law, Haruna Arebani, 23, to death with a kitchen knife.

    “The accused had accosted the deceased and demanded why his newly wedded wife (the deceased’s sister) was `taken’ away from him.

    “Arebani had angrily responded that Hassan should make more money to reclaim his wife.

    “The statement angered the accused who took a kitchen knife and stabbed the brother-in-law in the stomach and absconded to Ekpoma, where he was apprehended,” Adams said.

    The offence contravened Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 which stipulates a death sentence for offenders.

    The case was adjourned to April 19.
