Kogi: When varsity lecturers, government lock horns

It is glaring that the Kogi State University students have always suffered the consequential effect of the frictions that has engulfed the state government and the lecturers in recent times. COVENANT UMORU and ABEEB ALAWIYE writes

The popular adage that says when two elephant fights the grass suffers is a quintessential example of what has played out in the confluence state in the last three years.

Kogi State University (KSU) lecturer and the state government have comfortably acted the role of the elephant, while the students have unavoidably played the role of the grass.

The academic staff union of University (ASUU), Kogi State University chapter had cumulatively embarked on a Nine months industrial action and still counting over the last three years. The interminable industrial action has become the hallmark of the institution, and unarguably, this has placed KSU as one of the top institutions in Nigeria that suffer from a continuous industrial action.

The reason for the actions of the striking union is not farfetched, is basically anchored on Non-Payment of salaries and other dividends for several months.

This intermittent down tool has left the university with no concrete academic calendar.

Disruptions in academic programs in higher institution serve as a non-motivational factor to the students. It discourages them from learning. It is not surprising therefore that during strike actions, most students are seen involved in diverse activities such as sexual immorality, cyber scam, pool betting, unnecessary gossips, watching of films and reading comic materials for entertainment purposes rather than reading their books.

In the long run, they soon forget about academics and are no longer prepared for class activities which negatively affect their learning capability.

Conspicuously, the relationship between the Governor Yahaya Bello led administration and ASUU is completely paradoxical to that of Late Prince Abubakar Audu the founder of the institution and the union.

The down tool ASUU embarked in 2015 is still taking its toll on the institution as  students that graduated from Theatre Art, and Economics department in that year are yet to be mobilized for the compulsory one year national youth service. While their counterpart from other institution have completed the program. Also, the second semester result for some level in the same year is still pending.

In 2016, the union embarked on yet another action between April to July, as most expected the academic calendar was affected.  Students were compelled to resume immediately after the New Year celebration for their second semester examination with less time to prepare.

Barely two days after the conclusion of the second semester examination the Joint Action Committee (JCC) comprising of all the tertiary Institutions in the state, embarked on an indefinite strike. JCC demanded for the immediate reconstruction of governing council in all institution, and the payment of eight months arrears of salaries to all categories of staff.

While most tertiary institution has completed their first semester for the 2017/2018 academic session kogi state university is yet to begin.

Education is a right and not a privilege, therefore, the Government should always endeavor to honor whatever agreement reached with the academic communities.

The protracted strikes that have forcibly kept KSU students outside the four walls of the university can be averted if necessary steps are taken to build a good relationship between both parties. It is worth emphasizing that any government with a poor education system is heading towards a black future.

At the same time, the striking unions of higher should device other means other than strike to resolve aggrieved issues. Strike action should always be the last resort. This is because of the negative effect frequent strikes have on students and the entire academic community.

#BBNaija: Who takes home the Prize?

With just two days to end the game, the race to the highly coveted prize money of a whooping N25,000,000 and an SUV has intensified. Following the eviction of the smooth operator – Bally, the “trophy” is within the grasp of the remaining housemates. However, the probability of winning for each of the housemates is 1:5…not a bad one I must say!

The heavily criticised but overwhelmingly entertaining reality show is one that has witnessed several melodramas from the different housemates: From Ese and John being branded “fake housemates” before their eventual eviction, Gifty’s denial of ever knowing Banky W while in the house and the grey areas concerning her marital status, Kemen’s disqualification from the house after massaging and “kemening” Tboss while she was asleep (asleep?, hmmm…only God knows oh!),  ThinTallTony’s fake but glaringly sensual and carnal affair with Bisola in the house, Bassey’s shocking announcement of having a girlfriend after his eviction, and lastly, Bally’s merit award of being the “master kisser”; having kissed all the female housemates before his eviction.

Kudos must be given to all the evicted housemates who have been so wonderful in participating in the show.  Our shout out goes to – John, Ese, Gifty, Miyonse, Soma, Cocoice, Uriel, Kemen, Thintall Tony, Bassey and Bally…We hail thee!

It is believe that any credit gotten in the house will not count when it comes to knowing who will go home with the grand prize as the reality of the impending grand finale quickly crawls upon the housemates; only the person with the highest number of votes will eventually win the prize.

A lot of interesting stories are unfolding in every city as we draw closer to the final few days of the reality show.

BBNaija has simply captivated and more or less mesmerised its audience across Africa, most prominently Nigeria where a lot of people have stood up to campaign for their housemate to win the money bag.

Recently there has been a lot of exciting moments in the heart of BBNaija fans as people of high personality in Nigeria stood up to campaign for their favorite housemate.

Efe who is branded as the man of the moment “based on his logistics instinct” has received a lot of support from Nigerian celebrities campaigning for him and also his people from Warri rallying around to secure votes for their man.

Comedian bright okpocha popularly known as Basket mouth took to his Instagram page to campaign for him. Other celebrities in support of Efe are YBNL Boss Olamide, Ice prince Zamani, I go die, popular Nollywood actress Funke Akindele a.k.a Jenifa also shows her love and support for Efe.

TBoss got the support of Uti Nwachukwu, Linda Ikeji, Adekunle Gold, Linda Ejiofor, Beverly Osu, Ex BBA Africa winners – Dillish and Idris, Ex-BBA housemate – Maria, Nollywood actress – Ivie Okujaye, Beverly Naya, Bob risky, Mike Godson and more.

Bisola got the support of Iyanya, Mofe Duncan, Padita Agu. Also, her sister was recently pictured sharing recharge cards to Unilag students as a way of campaigning for her sister.

Marvis also get her supports from the Rivers state government as a way of mobilizing people to vote for their own child.

Lastly, Debbie-rise was also rumoured to have gathered supports from Kogi state government.

The SUV and N25m up for grabs by the “fantastic five” housemates, the big question now is: Who are you casting your vote for?

  • #RunLagos: How to run marathon

    #RunLagos: How to run marathon

As Lagosians prepares for the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon here are some helpful tips suggested by Douglas Scott, contributing editor for Runners World.

     Run a Dress Rehearsal

Four or five days before the marathon, do a two- or three-mile marathon-pace run in your marathon outfit and shoes. Picture yourself on the course running strong and relaxed. Besides boosting your confidence, this run will provide one last little bit of conditioning and will help you lock in to race pace on marathon day.

     Don’t eat Fat-Load

“During the last three days, concentrate on eating carbohydrate-rich foods, such as pasta, potatoes, bread, fruit and fruit juice, and sports drinks,” says Suzanne Girard Eberle. It’s the carbs, after all, not fat or protein that will fuel you on race day. Girard Eberle says what’s important is increasing the percentage of your calories that come from carbs, not simply eating more of everything. Since you’ll be tapering and expending fewer calories,” she says, “you don’t have to consume a great deal more food than usual. Rather, make sure your food choices are carbohydrate-rich—for example, spaghetti with red sauce, instead of Alfredo sauce, or a bagel versus a croissant.”

    Look Down

Select the shoes–and the socks–you’ll wear in the marathon. The shoes should be relatively lightweight but provide good support, and the socks should be the type you wear in other races. If the shoes aren’t your regular training shoes, wear them on at least one 10-mile run at marathon pace. This test run will determine whether you’re likely to develop blisters or get sore feet–before it’s too late. If the shoes bother you on this run, get yourself another pair.

    Warm Up

But just a little. Even the best marathoners in the world do only a little jogging beforehand, because they want to preserve their glycogen stores and keep their core body temperature down. If you’re a faster runner with a goal pace significantly quicker than your training pace, do no more than 10 minutes of light jogging, finishing 15 minutes before the start. Precede and follow your jog with stretching. If you’ll be running the marathon at about your training pace, skip the jog. Walk around a bit in the half hour before the start, and stretch (see below).

    Drink on the Run

“Practice during your remaining long and semi long runs with the sports drink and energy gels you intend to refuel with during the race,” “Serious-minded racers and those with finicky stomachs should be using the sports drink that will be available on the race course. And remember that sports drinks do triple duty when compared with water by providing fluid, carbohydrates, and electrolytes, the most important being sodium.” Find out how often your marathon will have aid stations, and practice drinking at that rate. If you don’t run with fluids, place bottles along your training route.

ASUU strike cripples activities In Kogi varsity

The strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kogi State University has started taking its toll on the institution.

The non-Academic staff of the University had earlier joined other tertiary institutions in a strike action called by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprising all the Tertiary institutions in the State.

vThe union had declared an indefinite strike last Friday demanding the immediate reconstitution of the university’s governing council and the payment of eight months arrears of salaries to all categories of academic staff.

Addressing reporters in Lokoja, the chairman of the union Dr. Daniel Aina explained that the absence of governing council for more than one year had affected the institution negatively that it could no longer function statutorily.

“In view of the demand for the immediate reconstitution of the university’s Governing Council, recent developments on our campus suggest that the lack of the council appear to be a ploy to erode the university autonomy which stands it out from all other institutions. ASUU-KSU will resist this.
