The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Charles Ayo, said this at a media briefing ahead of the institution’s 10th convocation.

Ayo said that the event was for the award of first and higher degrees in various disciplines in the institution.

He said that of the 1,315 students, 610 others would be graduating in the Second Class Upper Division, while 510 will be graduating in the Second Class Lower Division.

According to him, a total of 91 others would be graduating in the Third Class Division.

The don said that the institution would also be graduating a total of 135 postgraduate students during the ceremony.

He said that the number of this year’s first class graduates was an improvement on the 82 the institution produced at the 2014 convocation.

Ayo said that the institution’s products had found it easy to pursue further education in Ivy League universities around the world as a result of the quality of education offered in the university.

“The university’s goal for the 2014/2015 academic session is innovation, impact and internalisation.

“In order to achieve this goal, the university established 21 multidisciplinary research clusters that are committed to proffering solutions to myriad of challenges facing our society.

“One of such innovative research clusters is the Intergrated Dual-Powered Mobility Engine tagged CU-IDEA, which has to do with automobile that combines energy from fuel combustion and battery, to supply traction power to electric motor.

“We have also come up with the Afroscholar Project which is also fashioned toward taking care of the myriad of problems African-based academic institutions are faced with which has led to the poor quality rating of education in the continent.

“The need to address these challenges has necessitated the development of this project which is also an initiative of Covenant University that desires to create a viable platform for open and free access to relevant learning resources that are available within Africa.

“The Afroscholar initiative will among other things, engender mutual sharing of learning resources and academic collaborations among key actors in the learning spaces of Africa to raise quality of learning and scholarship in Africa,” he said.

Ayo said that because the institution wanted to remain a pacesetter in the provision of quality tertiary education in Africa, plans were underway to commence its Medical School within two years.

He said that the institution had, during the 2014/2015 academic session, interacted with several institutions within and outside the country while a number of new Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) were signed.

Ayo, however, noted that others were currently being processed.

  • Online store for Covenant University

    Online store for Covenant University

Covenant University students never dreamt of having an online store, tailored specially to meet their needs. But the birth of ShopInCU, last year, has brought excitement to the entire student community.

The now-thriving online store was founded by two Covenant University students from the department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Omole Success and Oluwaniyi Dayo.

ShopInCu, has become a favourite for buyers and sellers alike, both within and without Covenant University. The online store offers products from fashion items to electronic gadgets, and in could best be described as, ‘a market for products needed by the average University community member’.

ShopInCU also offers buying and selling services to those living at locations surrounding Covenant University, that is, Canaanland and Ota environs.

One of the co-founders, Omole Success, explains how they got the idea, “initially, my partner, Dayo Oluwaniyi and I, used to sell clothes. I was never really good at selling so I thought we should find an easier way to sell our stuff. I could design websites and program a bit so I spoke to him about it and we decided to start selling online on our now-official website- www.shopincu.com”.

Contrary to the general notion that most startups require enormous capital, ShopInCU started off with a capital of twenty to thirty thousand naira.

When asked how the capital was realized, Success reveals that it comprised mostly personal savings.
The organization offers 5 basic services as shown on their website: Sales, Delivery, Advertising, Marketing and Customer feedback. The service that stands out, of all these, is the Customer feedback. Via this service, ShopInCU offers information to other sellers on customer trends and behavior to enable them concentrate their resources on the right target market(s).

On how the two young entrepreneurs met in the first place, Dayo explains that they were already friends even before they got the idea for ShopInCu.

For the two young entrepreneurs, determining the needs of the university community was not difficult, as they are undergraduates themselves.

For ShopInCU, financial gain is not the main objective. The organization allows individuals and organizations to market their products free-of-charge on its online platform.

For budding entrepreneurs, Success also advised, “if you have something you’re passionate about, take a bold step and build it into a company now. There’s no better time. And most importantly, I can’t over stress this; don’t give up.”

With such passion evident in its founders, ShopInCU is definitely one organization to look out for in the next few years.

  • ‘I knew I would be CU’s best student’

‘I knew I would be CU’s best student’

Alma Jamachi Oputa is Covenant University’s best graduating student for the 2013/2014 session. Alma who graduated with a CGPA of 4.99 from the department of Computer Science, tells Olafisoye Demilade, how she achieved the enviable feat and plans for future.

    Tell us about your background?

I was born in Kaduna and grew up in Kaduna, Jos, Lagos and Owerri. I went to three primary schools, Command Day children school, Jos, Alama private School, Jos and Air force primary school, Victoria Island, Lagos. For my Secondary school, I attended Faith Academy, Ota, Ogun state.

What informed your choice to study computer science?

I studied computer science but it wasn’t my first choice initially. I have always wanted to study medicine since I was a little child. But things didn’t happen as planned and I couldn’t enter in for medicine at Unilag. Covenant University was my second choice and one of my secondary school teachers just picked computer science randomly for me. That was it.

Have you always come out tops since your primary education?

Yes, I have been excelling from my primary school days.

What was your initial reaction when you found out you were the best graduating student?

I felt very honoured and excited. It’s something I have been working on from my 100 level so I expected it. I knew beforehand that I had the highest CGPA in my set and I worked towards it by God’s grace.

What motivated you throughout your University days?

For starters, every semester was less stressful for me and that had to be God at work. Even when work got so cumbersome, I had wonderful friends and we would always tell each other we had to read, excel and do our best because we had goals. My friends were indeed the best! My lecturers were always there to answer any questions I had. I called my parents like everyday on campus and they never stopped encouraging me and telling me I was the best. I had every reason to do my best and come out the best.

What plans do you have now that you have graduated?

I have children in mind. I want to help as many children as I can, I don’t want any child suffering at all. I plan to build NGOs, motherless homes and free schools for these children. I also have some fashion ideas in mind. I want to own my brand of shoes and set up boutiques all around the world.

I also would like to go further in my field of study, computer science, and specialize in a particular area.

Do you still have any plans to study medicine?

Not at all. I can still attain the doctorate title (PhD) but not in the medical field now.

Who would you consider your mentors?

My dad, Bishop David Oyedepo and Ben Carson. My dad has mentored my entire life. It was from my dad I got the mentality that no matter where I found myself, whether I wanted to be there or not, I had to be the best! He told me to prove to people that I was good enough for every aspect of life and I could only do that by being the best. As for Papa (Bishop Oyedepo), I love him so much and I have never had any other spiritual mentor than him. He is a true spiritual father, and as for Ben Carson, I love his calmness, the way he does his jotb and still excels in all of it

What were the challenges you faced in the University and how did you get past them?

I didn’t face any major challenge. I just learnt to put God as a major factor in my life no matter what was happening or how busy my life got. I learnt to give God much of my time.

Describe your typical day while in Covenant University?

My typical day in CU varies based on the activities and plans I have lined up for that day. I wake up, pray, prepare for lectures and look at my to do list so I can plan how I would go about them and how I would use my free periods. After lectures, I go for any meetings and programs I have to attend and eat thereafter. I, then, study in the evenings and at night and I write my to do list for the next day. Afterwards I pray and go to bed.

Did you have time for social activities?

Definitely! I’m a very social person and I love to participate in social events. I’m an extrovert, with a lot of friends. It just boils down to how well you are able to manage your time.

How has life after graduation been so far?

Well, I find myself thinking and planning a lot. I’m already in a position where I have to decide a lot for myself now. By the grace of God and by total dependence in God, I’m working towards fulfilling God’s agenda for my life.

  • ‘Why public universities produce few first class graduates’

‘Why public universities produce few first class graduates’

Micheal Osayi emerged the 2013 best graduating student of Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, with a total CGPA of 4.926. In this interview with Samuel Akpan and Sonia Nwosu, the Civil Engineering graduate who hails from Edo State, speaks on his academic accomplishments, dream of becoming a first class graduate and how he emerged best graduating student.

    Who is Michael Osayi?

I am the second child of Engr Gabriel Eromhonsele and Mrs. Charity Eromhonsele. I am 21 years old. I am from Igueben Local Government Area of Edo State. I am a lover of God, a lover of people, and a lover of soccer. I am a critical thinker and solution provider.

Give a brief background of your academic accomplishments?

During my primary education, I was usually among the top three in my class. In junior secondary school, I was a little above average. It was during my senior secondary education that I began to take academics seriously. After the first year of my senior secondary education, I finished as the best in my class (SS1B) and won an award in mathematics. At the end of my second year, I was the 2nd best in SS2 class and won the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) award. I finished my secondary education as the best graduating student and as a finalist in the Maltina National Reading competition.

Did you aspire to be a first class graduate?

When I gained admission into Covenant University in 2008 my goal was to leave with a first class degree and I thank God that I was able to achieve it.

    What motivates and inspires you?

My major source of inspiration is God’s word- the Bible. According to Dr. David Oyedepo, every other book informs but the Bible transforms.

Is Michael all about academics or are there more sides to him?

During my stay in Covenant University, I was privileged to engage in some social and leadership activities. I was a course representative from 100-500 level and engineering class representative from 100-300 level. I was a floor representative, floor chaplain, and wing chaplain in 200 level. I was an executive in my department in 300 level and an executive in communion unit of CU’s chaplaincy. I was also privileged to be the financial secretary of TechWeek 2011.

What lessons did you learn from Covenant University?

The first and foremost lesson is the fact that without being a friend of the Holy Spirit you cannot achieve and maintain good success. The second is the fact that the people you have around determine the events in your life. During the first semester of 200 level, I offered 14 courses and held five leadership positions but by the help of the Holy Spirit I finished with a 4.95 GPA that semester. That was when I learnt the first and foremost lesson.

     What’s next for Michael?

My future ambition is to become one of the leading structural engineering consultants in the world.

What roles did the school play in molding you?

The events that occurred during my stay in Covenant University have made me spiritual, diligent, and responsible, built my capacity, given me a possibility mentality, and have taught me sacrifice. Covenant University has played a major role in molding me.

What is your  formula  for academic excellence?

First of all, you have to know that you are a success not because of your talents or abilities but because of Christ in you. Secondly, you have to prepare wisely by making sure you attend all lectures, do all assignments, and start studying early. Finally, try to study with your friends and make sure you teach others.

What is your reaction to the growing concern about increase in first class graduates produced by private institutions?

It is not a concern to me but a blessing to Nigeria. Most of the lecturers in public universities believe that a first class result should be for a few people, so they try their best to frustrate their students to ensure that they “suffer” in order to obtain a first class. Also the environment and infrastructure is not conducive for learning in most public universities. This also hinders the students from expressing their full potential. But in private universities like Covenant University, the infrastructure is good, the environment is good, and lecturers give students the scores they “deserve”. In summary, in most public universities the mentality of “suffering” is built into their students but in Covenant University, students are built with a mentality of “sacrifice”.

What is your advice to other students?

My advice to students is for them to live their lives for a purpose and not for pleasures. A life lived for a purpose brings fulfillment and pleasures but a life lived for pleasures brings poverty and corruption. There is a time for everything under the sun. Do the right thing at the right time.
