  • 56,000 students participate in Cowbellpedia maths competition examination

About 56,000 students jostled to cross the stage one hurdle as the qualifying examination of the 2019 Cowbellpedia Secondary School Mathematics TV Quiz Show, sponsored by Cowbell, the flagship brand of Promasidor Nigeria Limited, held across designated centres nationwide 9th February, 2019.

This year’s figure represents a 27.2 percent increase over the 44,000 participants recorded in 2018.

Out of this number, the best 108 will proceed to the next stage of the competition, which is the TV Quiz Show proper.

The two-hour long examination was hitch-free in all the centres as candidates with confirmation slips were tested in the written examination.

Officials of the respective state’s Ministry of Education and the National Examination Council (NECO) supervised the examination at various centres.

Some candidates at some of the centres expressed optimism about their ability to make it to the next stage of the competition.

An SS2 student of Iponri Grammar School, Lagos, Emmanuel Adeoti, said he hoped to advance to the TV Quiz Show proper, regardless of the hurdles ahead of him. ‘’The road to the Quiz Show may be quite difficult, but I’m sure I will be among the successful participants,”he enthused.

‘’I prepared very well for this exam and I look forward to being at the TV Quiz Show,” said Musiliu Adio of Community Junior Grammar School also in Lagos.

Assessing the conduct of the candidates at his designated centre, a NECO official, Charles Aneke, said although it was quite an arduous task getting the candidates to follow instructions, the exercise was a success.

An official of Lagos State Ministry of Education, Benedict Adegoke, also expressed satisfaction with the general conduct of the candidates. “They were all seated before exam began. It wasn’t a case of having to run after one student or the other,” Adegoke disclosed.

The teachers commended organisers of the Cowbellpedia TV Quiz, for sustaining the annual Mathematics competition which, they said, has continued to spur the desire for excellence in their students.

“Looking at the performance of my students today since the commencement of Cowbellpedia, it’s been a great leap from good to better. Each student wants to outperform the one before him or, at the very least, maintain the same good record,’’ said Abimbola Afolarin, a teacher at one of the centres.

  • Port-Harcourt boy beats girls in Maths quiz

History beckoned on three finalists of the Cowbellpedia Secondary School Television Quiz seeking whom to make famous as winner of the 2018 edition of the competition.  Praise Isinkaye of the Federal Government Academy, Suleja; Juliet Ekoko of the Ambassadors College, Ota, and Chinedu Mgbemena of Graceland International School, Port Harcourt all had their eyes on the final prizes of N2 million, an all-expense paid education trip, and others.

Having won the junior category of the Cowbellpedia two years ago, Ekoko was the favourite of the three to lift the trophy. Many wanted a repeat of history, like Munachi Ernest-Eze achieved last year by being the first ever to win the senior category and junior category trophies in 2015 and 2017.

But it was not to be. Though the trio ended the first round strong, the 60 seconds of Fame round was the undoing of Juliet and Praise.  Their surprisingly lack-lustre performance in that crucial stage was not enough to threaten Chinedu, who did not particularly impress in his round. It gave him the needed marks to win the competition with 75 points.

Chinedu, who had also competed in the Cowbellpedia as a junior student (but did not win), was happy about his feat this time around.  He thanked his teacher, Mr Christopher Olasupo for the preparation he got.

“My aim in this competition is to be the champion, I am happy God has done it today. I am proud to have made my parents proud,” he said.

Despite not getting the star prize, Praise said she was happy with her performance in the competition.

“I am happy I got to this point.  I believe that girls can be the best; we just have to work hard,” said Praise who won N1,500,000 for her effort.

Her father, Kehinde Isinkaye, a secondary school principal, said he exposed his children, including Praise elder brother who was also a Cowbellpedia participant, to mathematics early.

“From the start of their nursery school, I started teaching them mathematics.  I am a Mathematics teacher.  I spent a lot of time with my children when they were growing up.  I appreciate Cowbellpedia for this giant stride they are doing,” he said.

On her part, third placed winner, Ekoko, said she was not disappointed with her performance.  She was rewarded with N1 million.

In the junior category, 13-year-old Akinfoluhan Akinleye of The Ambassadors College, Ota, won the N2 million grand prize.  He beat Splendour Nwankwo of Jesuit Memorial College, and Favour Okarike of Graceland International School, both in Port Harcourt in a tight final.

Akinfoluhan dedicated the crown to both his father and teacher, Kayode Adebayo.

“I feel very happy to scale the hurdle to the final and winning the crown, especially being my first time of participating in the competition. My father will be so happy,” he said.

Others in the final were: Jessica Austine of the Federal Government Girls’ College, Owerri, Imo State; Enoch Adenekan of The Ambassadors College and Nafisat Abdulwaheed of Reality High School, Ilesha, Osun State (senior category); and Chidozie Uzochukwu of Nigerian Tulip International School, Abuja; Gabriel Akogun of Welkin International and Loluwa Abiodun of The Ambassadors College, both in Ota, (junior category).

The teachers of the top two winners got N500,000 each, while those of the first and second runners-up received N400,000 and N300,000.

In his address, the Managing Director of Promasidor Nigeria Limited, Anders Einarsson said Cowbell had provided a platform to improve performance in mathematics for the past 20 years.  He said that informed the increase in prize money by 100 per cent this year.

Since it started in 1998, Einarsson said the Cowbell-sponsored Mathematics competition had grown to involve over 11,000 schools. He reiterated the company’s commitment to the competition.

“It is my promise that we at Promasidor Nigeria Limited will continue to stimulate the interest of young Nigerians in the study of Mathematics and Cowbellpedia is a demonstration of our commitment,” he said.

In his remarks, the Acting Registrar of the National Examination Council (NECO), Mr Abubakar Gana, who was represented by Mr Mustapha Abdul, the Director of Examination Development, underscored the importance of mathematics to daily living. He urged students to embrace the subject.

“My advice to studnets, parents and teachers is not to run away from mathematics.  Mathematics is a beautiful subject. It is something you embrace.  It helps you in everyday life,” he said, while thanking Promasidor for providing a platform for young people to develop interest and expertise in the subject.

  • Female student smashes Cowbellpedia records

A new competition record has been set in the history of Cowbellpedia Secondary Schools Mathematics Television Quiz Show, sponsored by Cowbell Milk, the foremost brand from Promasidor Nigeria Limited.

In the senior category, Adebisi Ademola of Reality High School, Ilesha, Osun State, and Enoch Adelekan from The Ambassadors College, Ota, Ogun State, progressed to the semi-finals.

The four contestants who could not make it beyond the first and second rounds in this group were: Joshua Umoh of Monef High School, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State; Akachukwu Onyuike of Nigerian Tulip International College, Abuja; James Gabriel of Deeper Life High School, Calabar, Cross River State; and Mairo Musa-Machima of El-Kanemi College, Maiduguri, Borno State.

A highly-spirited Adebisi promised to channel all his energy and capacity to win the ultimate prize. “I feel excited scaling this hurdle. But my ultimate ambition is to win and become the 2018 Cowbellpedia champion,” he said.

On his part, Enoch expressed huge relief for getting to this stage and prayed that he becomes the champion to make himself, his parents and his school proud.
