    10 die, 11 injured in Kogi road crash

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that 10 persons died while 11 others were injured in a crash that occurred on the Obajana–Lokoja route in Kogi on Friday night.

    The Corps Marshal of FRSC, Malam Shehu Mohammed, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.

    The statement was issued by the Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Mr Olusegun Ogungbemide.

    Mohammed said that the crash, which occurred at about 11:30 p.m. at Apamaru, involved a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus with registration number KTG 100YL.

    He said the vehicle was conveying 21 male passengers.

    According to him, preliminary investigations by the FRSC revealed that the accident was due to speed violation and wrongful overtaking by the driver.

    The driver, he said, lost control of the vehicle.

    He said the injured victims were evacuated to Fisayo Hospital, Obajana, while the remains of the deceased were handed over to their families.

    Expressing grief over the tragic loss of lives, Mohammed cautioned against night travels, excessive speeding and wrongful overtaking.

    He said these factors remained leading causes of fatal crashes in Nigeria.

    Mohammed urged passengers to be vigilant and proactive in cautioning or reporting reckless drivers on the road.

    He stressed that “silence in the face of recklessness is complicity in tragedy.”

    Mohammed reminded all road users that road safety remained a shared responsibility.

    He urged road users to report reckless drivers by dialing the FRSC toll-free number 122.

    Mohammed said road users could also alert the nearest FRSC patrol team or any security agency on the route.

    He reiterated the corps’ commitment to intensifying enforcement against overloading.

    Mohammed further said the corps would strengthen advocacy campaigns discouraging night journeys, especially on critical transport corridors.

    10 die, 11 injured in Obajana–Lokoja crash

    Ten passengers died and 11 others  sustained various degrees of injury in a road accident at Apamaru  along Obajana–Lokoja highway.

    The crash, which occurred on Friday night, October 10, involved a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus with registration number KTG 100YL, bearing 21 male passengers at the time of the incident.

    Spokesman of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, announced in a statement on Saturday that a preliminary investigation by the FRSC crash team revealed the crash was caused by speed violation and wrongful overtaking by the driver, who lost control of the vehicle during a night journey.

    He said: “Out of the 21 persons involved, 10 were killed on the spot, while 11 sustained varying degrees of injuries, including deep cuts, fractures, and bruises.

    “The injured victims were evacuated to Fisayo Hospital, Obajana, while the remains of the deceased were handed over to their families and taken to Sarikin Hausawa, Obajana, for burial in line with Islamic rites.”

    Ogungbemide said the Corps Marshal of FRSC, expressed grief over the incident, warning that night travels, excessive speeding, and wrongful overtaking continue to be major causes of fatal road crashes in Nigeria. 

    “He, therefore, called on commercial vehicle operators to adhere strictly to road safety regulations, emphasising that the Corps will intensify its enforcement on Overloading and advocacy to discourage Night Journey across critical corridors in Nigeria.

    “The Corps Marshal urged passengers to remain vigilant and proactive in cautioning or reporting drivers who exhibit reckless behaviour behind the wheel,” Ogungbemide said.

    Twenty-year-old Nigerian striker, Paul Julius has passed on in a car crash just weeks after joining Cypriot club.

    The club Enosis Neon Paralimni FC (ENP) announced the demise in a statement.

    It reads:  “It is with deep sadness and pain that we express our sincere condolences on the unexpected loss of our footballer Paul Julius.”

    12 pupils killed in South Africa’s crash

    Twelve primary school children died in a road accident on Wednesday in South Africa as a minibus taking them to school overturned and caught fire after collision, officials said.

    The incident occurred on the N14 motorway near Merafong, about 70 kilometres west of Johannesburg, when another vehicle rammed the school bus from behind.

    Also, the driver of the minibus was found dead.

    Moreover, the South African authorities said the victims were burnt beyond recognition. Seven other children were injured in the accident in the province of Gauteng.

    Road officials were initially unable to provide any information on the ages of the children.

    The police are currently investigating the circumstances behind the accident.

    ´´The loss of our children is a devastating blow to our community,’’ Gauteng Province Minister of Education Matome Chiloane commented.

    No fewer than seven persons lost their lives, while many injured on Thursday, May 16, in a road accident that occurred along Iseyin -Ibadan road.

    The Nation gathered that the accident involved two vehicles.

    Confirming the incident, the acting Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), David Adewale, said 22 people were involved in the accident.

    He said: “It is true, seven people died; 22 people were involved.

    “Two vehicles were involved in the accident. 16 people were taken to the hospital.”

    12  killed, 28 injured in Zaria-Kano expressway crash

    The Kaduna State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kabir Nadabo, yesterday said at least 12 persons died and 28 sustained injuries in a road crash along Zaria-Kano expressway.

    Nadabo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna that the fatal road crash  occurred at Tashar Yari village at 7:36am yesterday.

    “The trailer with registration number KTG454ZZ was travelling to Kano when the unfortunate incident occurred,” Nadabo said.

    He said that the cause of the crash was wrongful overtaking, speeding and  overloading, which sadly resulted in the high number of fatalities.

    Nadabo said the Chairman of Makarfi Local Government and the Unit Commander, Tashar Yari were onground to assess the incident.

    He said an investigation revealed that 40 people were involved in the crash, 28 got injured and 12  died.

    “The injured were conveyed to the Makarfi General Hospital for further treatment.

    “The owner of the vehicle, who is in Azare, Bauchi State, has been informed and directed to report to the Kaduna Sector Command, while the driver of the trailer was reportedly among the deceased,” he said.

    Nadabo said that the accident was avoidable, adding, ”hence our resolve to continue to reach out to the stakeholders, particularly transport unions.

    ”This is to preach and sensitize their drivers on the dangers of speeding, overloading, dangerous driving and the use of cellphones while driving, among others.”

    11 die, seven injured in Kwara auto crash

    Multiple accidents yesterday claimed the lives of 11 persons in Kwara State.

    Seven sustained injuries in the crashes, which occurred about 4:50am at Aiyere, along Bode Saadu-Ilorin route in Moro Local Government.

    The auto crash involved a DAF truck and a Toyota Hiace bus.

    The accident was reportedly caused by wrongful overtaking and speed violation.

    The state Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Stephen Dawulung, said: “Preliminary investigations showed that the Toyota Hiace bus coming from Gombe en route to Lagos wrongfully overtook another vehicle, resulting in a head on collision with an oncoming DAF truck.

    “Eighteen people (men) were involved, 11 of them sadly lost their lives, while seven others were rescued with injuries and have been taken to a private hospital in Bode Saadu, where they are receiving treatment.”

    Dawulung directed full investigation into the crash.

    He sympathised with the bereaved families and wished the injured quick recovery.

    He advised drivers to drive within the stipulated speed limits, avoid night journeys and long hours of driving without adequate rest.

  • Four dead, 13 injured in Abuja crash

    Four persons where killed and thirteen injured in a fatal, early morning crash that involved four vehicles at Ushafa-Bwari road Monday in Abuja.

    Federal Road Safety Corps Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem revealed that three males and one female died while 13 others were injured in the accident which involved a commercial bus, a 2001 Mazda 232 car, 2004 Toyota Corolla and another Toyota Corolla.

    Kazeem who attributed the crash to dangerous driving said that the injured had been taken to the Bwari General Hospital for treatment while the dead were deposited at the morgue.

    He also said that FRSC personnel in Bwari and the police got to the scene shortly after the crash and cleared the obstruction to enable free passage of vehicles.

    “The injured and the dead victims have been taken to Bwari General Hospital, the obstruction was cleared and traffic control handed over to Insp. Linus of Motor Traffic Division, Bwari Police outpost,” Kazeem explained.

  • Former NDDC Acting MD, son, die in auto crash

    Former Acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Pastor Power Aginighan, is dead.

    Aginighan, a chieftain of the Delta state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the leader of the Ijaw elements within the party, reportedly lost his life in a ghastly road accident around the Mbiama end of the East-West Expressway on Friday.
    Also killed in the accident were his son, identified as Tammy, and his police escort, whose name could not be confirmed at the time of filing this report.
    Although the details of the time and the spot of the road where the accident occurred could not be ascertained at press time The Nation gathered that vehicle conveying the deceased was crushed by a trailer, leading to an inferno, which burned the victims beyond recognition.
    Confirming the sad news, the state Treasurer of the APC, Hon Ebiakpo Ezebiri, said the incident happened on Friday, adding that leaders of the party had been trying to reach the deceased all through the day, but he was unreachable.
    “We were together on Thursday when we hosted Professor Utomi. People were trying to reach him yesterday to get his attention on some matters, but he was unreachable, nobody knew he was dead. The accident happened during the day, but since they had been burnt beyond recognition, nobody could have known who was involved.
    “He was in the vehicle with his son and his police escort when the accident happened just after the Mbiama bridge. Some of our people have already gone to the scene of the accident to retrieve the bodies. We are in mourning, this is very painful,” Ezebiri said.
    It would be recalled that the Ijaw elements of the APC, just over a week ago, conferred the leadership of their stock in the party on Aginighan.
    Efforts to get the police to confirm the incident was unsuccessful as the state command’s spokesman, DSP Andrew Aniamaka, was unable to confirm.
    He, however said he would link up with the Bayelsa state command to get feelers.
  • Two more people die in auto crash in Ogun

    Barely four hours after an accident on Ogun state stretch of the Lagos – Ibadan expressway claimed 12 lives on Saturday, another auto crash on Abeokuta – Sagamu road, Ogun State, has claimed two more lives.
    The latest accident which occurred at the Siun – Kobape  corridor of the Abeokuta – Sagamu road involved lone Nissan Serena conveying 11 people, including the driver. The vehicle is marked LSD 679 EQ.
    The Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, who confirmed the accident, said 11people were involved with two of them dead while four others were injured.
    Akinbiyi added that the vehicle had burst tyre and crashed when the driver lost control of the wheel.
    According to him, both the injured and the dead have been taken to the General Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta.
