    Mark craves for violent-free elections

Senate President David Mark urged the citizens yesterday not to despair, saying “there will be light at the end of the tunnel”.

He was confident that the nation’s socio-political and economic problems in the last one year would give way to better days in the new year.

Mark spoke in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Paul Mumeh.

The Senate President said: “There is no doubt that the situation, especially insecurity, is challenging. We cannot pretend that all is well with us. But we are a nation of good faith in one God. When it seems impossible, God will make it possible.

“This trying time is only, but a phase in our match to greatness. With cooperation, dedication, honesty and patriotism on the part of all of us, we shall surely triumph.”

“All that is required,” Mark insisted, “is for all citizens; both the government and the governed to see our challenges as a collective problem facing all of us and not only to a part.”

He noted that there was no problem too difficult for the nation to surmount, “if we come together in one accord to confront the menace.”

Okoh craves corporate sponsors for sports

A sport enthusiast and former international boxing champion, Wellington Okoh has renewed his plea to individuals and corporate bodies to invest in the development of sports, particularly boxing and other sports outside football.

Okoh, who is a Commissioner with EDSOGPADEC, told SportingLife that gone were the days when sports development was in the exclusive list of government. He pointed out that paucity of funds in the face of bloated wages and decaying infrastructure, makes it increasingly difficult if not near impossible for government to develop sports in the country.

He said corporate bodies and affluent Nigerians could assist to build gyms, swimming pools, basketball courts and other sporting facilities and donate such facilities to government, schools and sports clubs.

The one-time Golden Globe boxing champion attributed youth restiveness and the increasing number of youth involvement in criminal activities to the dearth of sporting facilities which would have otherwise catered for their passion and energy in more positive ways.

He reiterated his commitment towards the revival of amateur boxing in Edo State through the encouragement of young boxers who excel in national and international tournaments as well the sponsorship of the Edo Amateur Boxing Championship which he began in December last year.

He disclosed that efforts were being made to ensure that the second edition of the championship would hold in June.

  • Gombe’s Obioha craves Scorpions’ motivation

McMarcel Obioha feels Gombe United have enough quality to challenge for honours in the upcoming season, but insists they must be properly motivated to fulfill their huge potentials.

The Savannah Scorpions finished ninth in the premier league after a blistering start last season, and the central defender told supersport.com that losing focus towards the end has been the major problem since he joined the team four seasons ago.

“This is my fourth year in Gombe, and we’ve always started well but finished empty handed. Our major undoing has been unfulfilled promises, and I hope there would be change in attitude this time,” he said.

“It is difficult to play every week at a high level when issues off the pitch aren’t moving fine, so we look forward to being motivated throughout the campaign. The new coach, Maurice Cooreman has done well to put together a strong side ahead of the new season and I’m really confident we can compete on the same level with the top sides.

“Every player loves to win titles or play on the continent and we also have the same ambition here.

“It’s good we’re starting (the league) in Ibadan against 3SC because it has always been a happy hunting ground for us, and we’ll be targeting the three points,” he added.

Obioha is also looking forward to playing a more prominent role in the Super Eagles after training with them briefly last year before injury ruled him out.

“I was part of the team in camp for the friendly against Peru, and (Godfrey) Oboabona was even moved to the right-back to accommodate me in central defence. It was looking promising till I twisted my ankle in a test game against the Flying Eagles.

“The injury sidelined me for three months, but I’m back to full fitness and would like to play my way back to contention. The only way to achieve this goal is to impress with my club, so I can’t wait for the new season to finally get going,” he said.
