  • 3 in court for alleged kidnap of 16-year-old girl

    Three people were on Tuesday arraigned in a Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly kidnapping a 16-year-old girl.

    The defendants- Ogei Blessing, Jennifer Ewenyor and Ogei Mabel all from Delta state, were arraigned on a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, criminal intimidation and kidnapping.

    They all denied committing the offences.

    The judge, Mr Umar Kagarko,
    however, ordered the remand of Ogei Blessing and Jennifer Ewenyor, while he granted bail to Ogei Mabel in the sum of N600,000.

    The judge explained that he granted the defendant bail because she is a nursing mother.
    He said‎ that Ewenyor and Blessing should file their bail application and adjourned the case till May 3 for hearing.

    Prosecutor Umoh Inah, had told the court that one Mrs Cynthia Ogeide and Mrs Chioma Douglas reported the matter at the Special Tactical Squad, FCT Command in January.
    He said the defendants conspired and kidnapped a 16-year-old girl and further gave her out for “sex slavery.’’
    He said when the defendants were arrested; they gave the police false information, which misled the police from conducting a thorough investigation.
    The prosecutor added that one Miss Favour, who allegedly harboured the 16-year-old girl was now at large.
    The offences contravened Sections 97, 397 and 217 of the Penal Code.

    Maikori arraigned for ‘criminal conspiracy, spreading falsehood’

    The Chief Executive Officer of Chocolate City, Lagos, Audu Maikori, was yesterday arraigned at a Kaduna Chief Magistrates Court for alleged criminal conspiracy and spreading falsehood.
    According to the charge sheet, he was alleged to have incited a disturbance of public peace.
    Maikori was arraigned with Simon Joseph, as first and second accused.
    Prosecution counsel Dari Bayero told the court the duo, on January 23, conspired and spread a false story, in social media, that five students of Kaduna State College of Education were killed by Fulani herdsmen.
    “This false information is inciting and capable of disturbing the public peace,” he alleged.
    Bayero said the offences were punishable under Section 24 of the Cyber Crime Act, Laws of the Federation 2015.
    He, however, said investigation was ongoing, and urged the court to give him more time to conclude the investigation and file the case at the appropriate court.
    Counsel to the first accused, Mr. Reuben James, urged the court to grant his client bail on the grounds that the offences for which he was sued were bailable.
    Similarly, counsel to the second accused, Mr. Desmond Tabakwot, urged the court to grant his client bail.
    Chief Magistrate Emmanuel Yusuf said he lacked jurisdiction to try the case and, thereafter, granted the accused persons a N100,000 bail and one surety each.
    He adjourned the case till April 20.

    The Lagos State Government on Tuesday commenced moves to charge the suspected kidnappers of the Oniba of Iba, Oba Goriola Oseni to court for criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, murder and armed robbery.

    The Government, in a statement issued by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, said the four suspects – Duba Furejo, Ododomo Isaiah, Reuben Anthony and Yerin Fresh would be prosecuted in accordance with the relevant laws applicable to the alleged crimes committed.

    Kazeem, who has already issued legal advice for the prosecution of the suspected kidnappers, said the suspects would be charged for offences of conspiracy for kidnapping, kidnapping, and two counts charge of murder and armed robbery.

    He added that the charge would be filed expeditiously at the High Court of the State to ensure prompt prosecution of the suspects.

    It would be recalled that during the unfortunate and dastardly crime, the security guard in the Palace and a commercial Bike rider were killed, while the monarch was whisked away and kept in captivity for about three weeks.

    The sustained pressure and intelligence gathering from law enforcement agencies, however, led to the rescue of the monarch, while the four suspects were apprehended in the process.

    Besides, the Commissioner said the administration of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, as part of its commitment to make the State a safe place to live and do business, will continue to support  law enforcement agencies in the investigation and apprehension of all criminals, especially those involved in heinous crime of kidnapping, armed robbery and murder.

    According to him, “Governor Ambode is committed to ensure that Lagos State becomes a no-go area for criminals who target innocent citizens for kidnapping and collection of ransom.

    “My office will continually give the necessary support to the Police in apprehension, investigation and prosecution of criminals in Lagos State,” Kazeem said.

    He, however, urged residents to promptly provide information that could lead to the apprehension of criminals, assuring that government would continue to work assiduously to ensure that criminals are brought to justice.

    He also said that the State Government is desirous to prosecute to logical conclusion and promptly all criminal cases as well as ensure that suspects are brought to justice swiftly.

    Commission charges Adegboruwa with criminal conspiracy

    The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has filed a criminal charge against activist-lawyer Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa at the Federal High Court in Lagos.

    He was accused of dealing in a seized property that was a subject of EFCC’s investigation without authorisation.

    The commission said he and Jonathan Udeagbala committed the alleged offence on August 13, 2013, in Lagos.

    Adegboruwa was said to have been arrested on Monday at his Lekki office by EFCC operatives.

    The defendants allegedly conspired to lease the property at House 105, NICON Town Estate, Lekki.

    EFCC said the property was a “subject of interim orders of attachment made by Justice Christopher Balogun of the Lagos State High Court.”

    The order, the commission said, was made on June 18, 2012.

    Adegboruwa allegedly leased the property to Shelf Drilling Nigeria Limited for N61, 631,944.65.

    The money was allegedly credited to his Zenith Bank account, 1010240758.

    The alleged offence is punishable under Section 32 (1) of the EFCC Establishment Act 2004.

    The charge, dated May 5, has been assigned to Justice ‎Oluremi Oguntoyibo‎, who was recently transferred from Ilorin Division to replace Justice Rita Ofili Ajumogobia.

    Adegboruwa‎ represents ex-Niger Delta militant, Government Ekpemupolo (Tompolo), on whose behalf he filed an application challenging sections 221 and 306 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015.

    He is also part of a legal team led by Tayo Oyetibo (SAN) who sought to quash the summons issued for Tompolo’s arrest by Justice Ibrahim Buba. The case is now on appeal.

    Adegboruwa is known for his public interest litigation.

    He successfully sued the Lagos State government over tolling on the Lekki Bridge.

    He also got a judgment banning the monthly environmental sanitation exercise. Both are now on appeal.
