  • Cristiano Ronaldo announces return from injury with a goal

Cristiano Ronaldo announced his return from injury with a goal on Saturday as Juventus extended their unbeaten streak in the league under new boss Maurizio Sarri after edging past SPAL at the Allianz Stadium.

Miralem Pjanic’s superb strike just moments before the half-time break had opened the reigning champions’ account.

The Bosnian star had been teed up by Sami Khedira on the edge of the penalty area, and dispatched beyond Erit Berisha with a sumptuous effort.

Paulo Dybala and Cristiano Ronaldo went close in the second half to doubling Juventus’ lead, but found Berisha in inspired form for the visitors.

However, the latter finally netted Juventus’ second following an assist from the Argentine. Dybala whipped an inviting delivery into the box which was met by a towering header from Ronaldo, who converted into the bottom right-hand corner.

The tie was Ronaldo first outing for Juve since the controversial FIFA Best Footballer of the year award which was won by arch rival and Barcelona forward Lionel Messi. Though the former Real Madrid shunned making the award a major subject of discuss the award has however continued to generate reactions with many disagree with the result. World soccer ruling body FIFA has reportedly said the controversy will be investigated.

  • Old family video breaks emotional Cristiano Ronaldo

At 34, Juventus  forward Cristiano Ronaldo is not only one of the best players in the world but indeed one of the most photographed and talked about celebrity. The story of his life and his soccer career has been told, published and re-published.

No doubt he has seen several of his own pictures with friends, teammates, family members to mention just a few.

The former Real Madrid ace was however seized with emotion seeing for the first time a video in which his late father spoke very well about his then 20 year old son.

Ronaldo was reduced to tears after being shown footage of his late father expressing his pride at his achievements.

The Juventus star was shown the clip of his father Jose Dinis Aveiro speaking about him on his doorstep, ahead of the Euro 2004 tournament held in Portugal.

His father, an alcoholic and former soldier, would die of liver failure a year later at the age of 52, missing out on much of Ronaldo’s success and the birth of his four children.

In tears, Ronaldo said during the hour-long interview with Piers Morgan:  ‘I never saw the video. I never saw that video. Unbelievable.’

The Portugal international also revealed how facing a rape allegation left him feeling embarrassed in front of his girlfriend and children. Speaking about the accusation, he said: ‘It makes you feel so bad.’

‘One day I was at home in the living room with my girlfriend and then the news they speak about Cristiano Ronaldo, this and that,’ he said. ‘You listen to your kids coming down the stairs and you change the channel because I was embarrassed.

American model Kathryn Mayorga claimed the football star raped her in a Las Vegas hotel room in 2009 but Ronaldo strongly denies the claims.

Las Vegas authorities announced last month that there was not enough evidence to bring criminal charges against Ronaldo.

  • Ronaldo scores four times as Portugal rout Lithuania 5-1

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo took his international tally to 93 goals when he scored four times on Tuesday.

The goals helped to give the European champions a 5-1 win away to Lithuania in their Euro 2020 qualifier.

Playing in his 161st international, the 34-year-old notched his eighth hat-trick for his country and the 54th of his remarkable career.

But the goals did help Portugal through what had threatened to turn into a frustrating evening.

Unheralded midfielder William Carvalho completed the rout in stoppage time as Portugal stayed second in Group B with eight points, five behind leaders Ukraine with one game in hand.

Serbia are a further point behind in third after a 3-1 win in Luxemburg.

“I scored one goal against Serbia and four today (Tuesday) and what I want most is to continue like this,” said Ronaldo, who converted an early penalty kick and then added three second-half goals.

Portugal coach Fernando Santos said: “Ronaldo is the best player in the world. This is clear and unmistakable proof”.

Lithuania, bottom with one point, missed an early chance when Vykintas Slivka fired over from close range.

They quickly paid the price when Markus Palionis handled a Joao Felix cross and Ronaldo put away the spot kick in the fifth minute.

Lithuania goalkeeper Ernestas Setkus made an excellent save to prevent Edvinas Girdvainis turning the ball into his own net.

But Vytautas Andriuskevicius then grabbed a surprise equaliser, rising above his marker to head home from a corner in the 28th.

Ronaldo set up good chances for Felix and Bernardo Silva, which were wasted, after the break before taking matters into his own hands.

Just as Portugal were beginning to show signs of frustration, Ronaldo produced a low shot which bobbled twice in front of Setkus in the 62nd minute.

The Lithuania goalkeeper got his hand to it, but it hit his head and bounced into the net.

Three minutes later, Ronaldo was left free in the area to sweep home Bernardo Silva’s cross and Silva also provided the pass for Ronaldo to sidefoot his fourth 11 minutes later.

Carvalho’s goal, his fourth in 60 games, was a fitting reward for a player who keeps the Portugal midfield ticking over without getting much attention.

“I’m convinced that these players are capable of finishing top of this group,” said Santos.

Aleksandar Mitrovic scored twice to keep Serbia’s hopes alive with a win in Luxembourg.

He headed Serbia in front after 36 minutes and Nemanja Radonjic curled in the second 10 minutes after the restart.

Substitute David Turpel pulled one back and Serbia were on the ropes until Sergej Milinkovic-Savic produced a delightful reverse pass for Mitrovic to fire in the third.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo is highest mega buck earner in Serie A

Cristiano Ronaldo is earning £28million-a-year in wages at Juventus after taxes, three times what Matthijs de Ligt gets as the second highest earner in Serie A, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

Juventus’ new summer signing de Ligt takes home £7.2million-a-year plus bonuses, jumping up above the likes of Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain to take up his spot behind Ronaldo.

Third spot in the list is taken up by another Serie A newcomer, Romelu Lukaku, who is getting £6.7million-a-year plus bonuses after joining Inter Milan from Manchester United this summer.

Of course, Ronaldo earns far more than his wages due to his global status. Nike alone pays him £14.68m-a-year, and he will also receive performance-based bonuses.

Juventus understandably take up the bulk of the list of top earners, with nine of their players appearing in the top 10. Only Lukaku and Inter break that mould.

Juventus have won eight Serie A titles in a row, so can afford to spend big money on the players they need to keep their run going. They reportedly spend £264million-a-year on player wages.

Aaron Ramsey is another name they have brought in this year, with the Welshman on £6.3million-a-year since joining on a free transfer after his contract with Arsenal ended.

Adrien Rabiot joined from PSG this summer, and he too has broken into the top 10, earning the same as Ramsey plus bonuses.

With all these new arrivals, the likes of Dybala, Higuain, Miralem Pjanic, Douglas Costa, Mario Mandzukic, and Sami Khedira have all found themselves dropping down the list of best paid footballers in Italy.

Not far off the top 10 is AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who earns £5.4million-a-year, and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly earns the same.

    SERIE A TOP EARNERS

    1. Cristiano Ronaldo – £28m
    2. Matthijs de Ligt – £7.2m
    3. Romelu Lukaku – £6.7m
    4. Gonzalo Higuain – £6.7m
    5. Paulo Dybala – £6.5m
  • Ronaldo claims 10th Portuguese Player of the year award

Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo is far from closing shop on accumulation of awards both home and abroad.

The former Real Madrid ace added another feather to his cap after clinching his 10th Portuguese Player of the year award.

The 34-year-old has dominated his country’s annual awards night since 2007 and has taken the top gong each year since then – bar exceptions in 2010 and 2014 when Simao and Pepe respectively won the awards.

Ronaldo, fresh from leading Juventus to an eighth straight Serie A title last season, beat off competition from Atletico Madrid starlet Joao Felix, Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva, Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes and Wolves’ Ruben Neves.

The glamorous awards evening took place at the Carlos Lopes Pavilion in Lisbon where Ronaldo, reflecting on a tough year, paid homage to his early days at Sporting Lisbon in his speech.

‘This world is so fast, with the social media, the press, it’s been wild,’ Ronaldo said.

‘It’s been an extremely complicated year on a personal level. Don’t let anyone pull you down.

‘I can’t help but mention that Sporting deserves a little prize. Next time.’

Benfica were the big winners of the evening having been awarded the men’s and women’s Team of the Year awards.

Bruno Lage, Benfica boss, was also recognised with the Manager of the Year award.

Ronaldo, having missed on UEFA’s Player of the Year award at the expense of Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, is looking to win FIFA’s The Best award after being named among the nominees.

The Portuguese will again contest for the game’s biggest individual honour with Van Dijk and Barcelona star Lionel Messi.

The winner will be announced on September 23 at a ceremony in Milan.

  • VAR rules out Ronaldo’s goal as Juventus start title defence with win

Ronaldo looked to have doubled his side’s lead but his head was judged to have been narrowly offside by VAR.

  • UNENDING RIVALRY: Why I am better than Messi- Ronaldo

It doesn’t really matter whether one is in Jerusalem or Judea, the rivalry between Portugal international Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentina forward Lionel Messi is not one that can end in a jiffy.

Both players boast of cabinets full of numerous awards from far and near. Their rivalry remains a talking point not only among stakeholders and soccer pundits alike but also among their teeming fans scattered across the globe.

But like the saying goes out of the abundant of the heart the mouth speaks, which perhaps explains why Ronaldo has finally submitted that he is better than Messi.

The Juventus forward gave his personal take on the eternal rivalry between them, stating that the difference between the record-breaking pair is that he has won the Champions League with more than one club.

The debate over who is better – either currently or indeed of all time – reached boiling point during the duo’s shared time in Spain, with Real Madrid and Barcelona fans at odds over which of the world-class stars should be named the best.

Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates after netting for Juventus

A total of five Ballons d’Or each does little to help separate the attackers, but with Messi having spent his entire senior career at Barcelona, Ronaldo hinted that he perhaps puts himself ahead of the Argentine due to his ability to adapt to new surroundings.

“In the case of Messi, he is an excellent player,” Ronaldo said in DAZN’s series The Making Of.

“Not only for the Ballons d’Or he has won but for also being a player who was always at the top year after year, just like me.

“The difference with me is that I’ve played for different clubs and I also won the Champions League with different clubs.

“I was the top scorer in the Champions League six times in a row.”

Regardless, Ronaldo continues to harbour great respect for Messi, making it clear that sustained success over a ten-year period for both players should be appreciated for the huge amount of hard work that it takes to stay at the top.

“Obviously, I have not seen such a rivalry between two players at the top of the mountain for so many years,” the Portugal captain added.

  • Ronaldo ‘sells £2.3M hillside mansion to Pepe

Cristiano Ronaldo has shown the lengths he will go to for close friends after he ‘took a £1.25million hit’ selling his Portuguese mansion to teammate Pepe.

The Juventus superstar has a wealth of properties to his name but, according to the Sun, has decided to sell his hillside retreat in his homeland to his international teammate.

Hidden away by vast woodland and situated in Geres, the mansion – which includes a landing pad for a helicopter – was purchased for close to £3.5m seven years ago by the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Pepe, who played alongside Ronaldo at Real Madrid, is now back in his home country having joined Porto after leaving Turkish side Besiktas.

Super Eagles’ Captain John Mikel Obi has expressed his preference for Chinese food over Nigerian popular food, Eba.

In a monitored interview, Mikel said “To be honest, I don’t eat eba as much. I think for the last five or six years, I eat more Chinese food than eba.”

Speaking on who he prefers between Juventus striker Cristiano Ronaldo and FC Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, Mikel Obi, who plays for English side Middlesbrough, said: “It is Messi all day. For me, he is from a different planet. I am grateful to have played with him and against him so many times, right from our days at the U-20 level.”

  • Ronaldo buys one-off Bugatti La Voiture Noire for €11million

Cristiano Ronaldo is rumoured to be the new owner of the one-off Bugatti La Voiture Noire – reportedly the most expensive car ever built.

Reports suggest Ronaldo has spent €11million (£9.49million) on the unique Bugatti which was first presented to the world at the Geneva Motor Show 2019.

The French luxury company built only one of the prototype supercar and it is a tribute to the 110th anniversary of the founding of the company

The car is a modern interpretation of the mythical and legendary Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic, four of which were built between 1936 and 1938.

The car is powered by an 8.0-litre turbocharged W16 engine and can reach 260mph.

Bugatti have confirmed the one-off model now has an owner, but have refused to officially identify them.

Spanish sports paper Marca reports that the new owner is the legendary footballer, despite previous claims that it was bought by Ferdinand Piech, former chairman of the Volkswagen Group.

The owner will not be able to drive the car until 2021 as the company still needs to finalise some small details on the prototype, according to reports.

Ronaldo has a fleet of luxury cars which reportedly include a Mercedes C Class Sport Coupe, a Rolls-Royce Phantom, a Ujn Ferrari 599 GTO, a Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4, an Aston Martin DB9, a McLaren MP4 12C and a Bentley Continental GTC Speed.
