It was gathered that he got angry and attacked his mother with the machete he was holding and ran away.

The source said the young man was however accosted by youths in the community, who brought the matter to the Paramount Ruler of Ugep.

  • Low voter turnout in Cross River

Despite the large turnout that characterised the presidential and national assembly elections a fortnight ago, the governorship and state house of assembly elections witnessed high level of voter apathy in Cross River State.

In many polling units visited across the state, the INEC ad-hoc staff members were seen just sitting around, waiting for voters.

The election across the state was generally peaceful, it was, however, observed.

It was also observed that there was reduced security presence.

In several places, it was, however, noticed that there was vote buying as voters were being induced with the sums of N500 or N1000 to sway their decision around the polling units.

The State governor, Prof Ben Ayade, who voted in his Kakum, Obudu local government area country home, said he was confident of victory.

“I am perfectly happy with the arrangement on ground, well organised and voting is going on peacefully,” he said.

  • PDP decries killings, violence, militarisation of elections

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the heavy militarisation, violence and killing of innocent Nigerians during Saturday’s Governorship and State Assembly elections across many states of the federation.

A statement on Saturday by the spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan blamed the development on what the opposition party described as the desperation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the elections.

“The world watched with utter horror as soldiers under the command of the Buhari Presidency, hound, arrest, shoot, terrorise opposition figures and provide cover for APC thugs to unleash violence, kill opposition members, cart away electoral materials and disrupt polls in PDP strongholds, all in the bid to forcefully foist the APC on Nigerians,” the statement said.

The party further bemoaned the resort to bloodletting, violence and alleged official high handedness by the APC in the electoral process, which it said, has further confirmed this administration has no regard for the lives of Nigerians and lawful processes, but only interested in seizing power by all means.

The PDP noted that never in the history of the nation had a general election recorded such bloodletting, violence and manipulations as triggered in the 2019 elections.

Lamenting further, the PDP said: “In Rivers, Akwa-Ibom, Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Kogi, Benue, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, among others, soldiers brazenly aided APC thugs to unbridle violence, hijack electoral processes and write fictitious results for APC candidates.

“In Rivers state, soldiers invaded INEC office in Bori, beat up and chased away PDP agents and assisted the APC in ballot stuffing and writing of results.

“The scenario was the same in Akwa-Ibom where security agents provided cover for APC thugs in their bid to hijack the electoral process.

“In Imo state, APC thugs, accompanied by security agents disrupted polls in PDP strongholds and reportedly killed a PDP agents in Umudo/Umuwala area of Owerri.

“In Ebonyi state, APC thugs aided by security agents, burnt down INEC facility in the state, seeing that their party did not have any foothold in the state.

“In Ajaokuta, Kabba/Bunu, Olamaboro, Ijumu and several other local governments in Kogi state, APC thugs, assisted by soldiers invaded polling units and carted away ballot materials, a development which sparked off restiveness in some areas and resulted in mass destruction of property in the area”.

The party regretted that in many other states, the APC, in connivance with INEC, orchestrated the deliberate diversion of electoral materials meant for certain areas to unknown destinations, resulting in the frustration of electoral processes in the affected areas.

“We know that the APC plot to derail our hard- earned democracy and impose a fascist regime on our nation but we are resolute in standing with Nigerians and all lovers of democracy to ensure that nobody, no matter how vicious, is allowed to vanquish our democracy.

“In all, our party stands with Nigerians in their resilience at this defining moment in our political history.

“The PDP commends the courage of Nigerians in standing firm in defence of democracy, despite the machinations of the APC,” the party added.

  • INEC confirms electoral materials hijack in 4 C/River councils

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Cross River has confirmed the hijack of electoral materials in four local government areas of the state.

The local government areas are: Abi, Bakassi, Obubra and Etung.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Frankland Briyai, confirmed the development shortly after monitoring the voting process at some polling units in Calabar Municipality and Calabar South.

He said that report of hijack at Yakurr Local Government Area of the state was yet to be confirmed, noting that the commission would record zero scores in all areas where materials were hijacked.

“We have had cases of hijack of materials today. I got a call on hijack of materials in Abi, Bakassi, Obubra and Etung Local Government Areas.

“In Yakurr Local Government Area, I got a call concerning hijack of materials but I am yet to confirm that.

“I have said it before, if they deliberately refuse to make use of the card reader by hijacking electoral materials, the affected areas will score zero.

“Every Cross Riverian and politician is aware of this.’’

He, however, expressed satisfaction with high turnout of voters in some areas and applauded voters for their peaceful conduct during accreditation and voting.

“The security agents were doing their work accordingly in all the areas we visited and I must commend them for that,’’ he said. (NAN)

“There was so much gunshots inside my house. My car and other valuables were destroyed and we found over 15 pellets in the morning.

“I don’t know where this is coming from. I thank God for the safety of my wife and children.

“I want to call on the state Commissioner of Police and other security agencies to move in immediately and investigate this matter because it has been reported,” he said.

He said that he has not had any political rivalry with anyone or quarrel that should warrant such an attack in his home.

  • From death trap to express way

MR Chioba Okeke works in Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State. But he lives in Calabar, the state capital. He now spends about 30 minutes to get to work from home everyday and this quite excited him.

However, that was not the case before now.  He used to spend hours making the same trip. He described his experience then simply as a nightmare.

Mr Okeke’s story tallies with those of thousands of other commuters who ply the Calabar-Ikom-Ogoja Highway that had been a death trap, being in a state of disrepair for years until the  Federal Government intervened and began to rehabilitate the almost 350-kilometer stretch.

The state has two major federal highways: the Calabar-Odukpani-Ikot Ekpene and the Calabar-Ikom-Ogoja roads. The former is the shortest to other south-south and south-east states, while the latter, which connects almost all the local governments in the state in one long stretch, leads to the northern part of the country.

The Calabar-Odukpani-Ikot Ekpene Road received attention in 2016 when the Federal Government, through the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), carried out intervention works on the road to ameliorate the plight of commuters.

The Calabar-Ikom-Ogoja highway, constructed in the 70s, however, remained in a state of complete disrepair until the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola(SAN), visited the state in 2017 to inspect that road following the people’s outcry. The minister  had promised that funds would be released to carry out intervention works at critical sections of the road as well as rehabilitation works where necessary.

In need of urgent attention at the time was the Pamol axis of the highway,  the only road leading in and out of the state capital, where a deep gully had threatened to cut the road in two, endangering the lives of road users.

The situation had been a terrible one, as a yawning chasm had taken up the entire road, forcing vehicles to precariously use one lane of the road; even the side of the road which vehicles were forced to use had been eroded  and was in a collapsible state.

Commuters had expressed strong fears that with the onset of rains and heavy traffic, especially with heavy-duty cement and petroleum trucks plying the road,  tragedy was imminent if nothing was done urgently.

Also worrisome for commuters and residents was that the road was the only one leading in and out of the state capital. Hence if the road had collapsed, besides the imminent loss of lives, Calabar would be completely cut off from other parts of the country.

This was the part of the road that had been giving Okeke and other commuters nightmares any time they were going to work.      However, their exhilaration knew no bounds when the Federal Government intervened and began to fix the road. They expressed gratitude to the government  for making life easier for road users and saving lives.

“Sometimes we used to spend hours on this particular spot, but not too long, the Federal Government intervened and as you can see, things are back to normal. It now takes just 30 minutes to get to Akamkpa. I want to thank the Federal Ministry of Power Works and Housing for a job well done. We are all happy. You can see that things are gradually getting back to shape.

“This place we are standing here, there used to be a very big gully by the side; it had been there for years. It gradually ate into the road and almost half of the road was gone before the intervention,” Okeke said.

At the Iwuru, Akamkpa local government area section of the road, where rehabilitation has been completed, a commercial motorcyclist, Patrick Sylvanus, also expressed joy over the development.

“The road was very bad but now, we are enjoying it  because they have worked on it. Before now, we were not able to pass through here because the place was very bad, but now, we thank God that the government has come to give us a better place to pass. We are very happy with the government. It has also helped our business in this area a lot. Also, we used to record a lot of accidents here because of the bad road. There was an accident that happened at this spot involving a tanker. It caught fire and  killed a lot of people here because of the bad road. We thank God, it is now fine,” Sylvanus said.

Mr.Odey Joseph from Ogoja said he travels home more often now from Calabar as the condition of the road, though not perfect, has greatly improved.

“I used to spend up to 10 to 12 hours anytime I wanted to travel from Calabar to my home town. Because of this, I was always reluctant to go home, even when it was important for me to do so. But now even though the work on the road is still going on, I can make it home in four to five hours. For this I am grateful,” Joseph said.

In Ugep local government well known for the sale of garri, the women in the area, where a rehabilitated portion of the road passes through, expressed gratitude, saying their sales had improved.

One of them, who gave her name simply as Nnanke, said because of the smooth road, more people now come to buy their products from other local government areas and even neighbouring states.

“Before now, it was just people  passing through that used to patronise us. But now that the road is good, people actually come here directly to buy our garri. We are happy for this,” she said.

The Federal Controller of Works, Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing in Cross River State, Engr.Bassey Nsentip, said the ministry was working on the rehabilitation of about 250 kilometers of the road.

The road, which is the nerve of the state, runs 330 kilometers from Calabar in the southern part of the state up to Ogoja Local Government Area in the northern part, terminating at Gakem at the Benue State border.

Nsentip said three different contractors are handling the rehabilitation of the road and the quality of the job was good. According to him, areas rehabilitated would last for over 20 years.

He said the idea was that by the time government is done with the road, travellers would have a smooth ride all the way from Calabar, at one end of the state and to Ogoja, at the other end.

In January this year, Fashola flagged off the rehabilitation of the 73-kilometer Odukpani Junction-Ikot Okopra-Akpet 1 section of the Calabar-Ikom-Ogoja road in Biase local government area.     The minister said the project, which cost about N14 billion, is a demonstration of the commitment of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to bridge the infrastructural gap in the country, geared towards providing the much needed stimulants for economic growth and ease of doing business. The project is expected to be completed in 24 months.

“This project is a 73-kilometer single carriage way. It links the industrial town of Akamkpa to Biase Yakurr road, hence its frequent  use by industrialists around the area, which led to its deterioration. The shoulders of the road have been completely eroded, while the entire alignment is riddled with alligator cracks, as well as characterised by potholes,” the minister, who was represented by the Minister of State in the Ministry, Mustapha Baba Shehuri, said.

“When completed, the road will greatly reduce vehicle operation maintenance cost, improve travel time, reduce accidents as well as loss of lives and property. It will also enhance the socio-economic wellbeing of the people along the corridor, generate employment opportunities for both skilled and unskilled labour and assist in the fight against crime,” he said.

  • C/River: Appeal Court order upholds Owan-Enoh, others as APC candidates

The Court of Appeal sitting in Calabar on Wednesday granted a Stay of Execution Order which reaffirmed Senator John Owan-Enoh, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba and others published by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State.

The panel of three Judges headed by Justice A. M Uwade frowned at INEC’s misinterpretation of her earlier order of February 20 which directed that parties in the matter maintain Status Quo Ante pending determination of the substantive case.

The three judges in the panel unanimously agreed that the Stay of Execution Order earlier granted subsist in the interest of justice as evident in the affidavit and counter affidavit as contained in the subject matter of the appeal, suit No CA/C/62/2019.

A Federal High Court Judgement delivered by Justice Simon A Amobeda in Calabar on February 11 in the case filed by Etim John and two others challenging the legitimacy of the current State Executive Committee of the APC in Cross River State, led by the late Sir Mathew Achigbe who is now being represented in acting capacity by Sir John Ochala, had declared that the Etim John faction be taken as the legitimate state executive council of the party.

The judge also went further to pronounce that candidates from the list submitted by Etim John should be recognized by INEC.

This Federal High Court Judgement prompted the appeal for which the stay of execution has been granted.

Responding to the Stay of Execution Order the Counsel to Etim John and others, Ayei Okpa said “I am satisfied with the order of court because it is in the interest of justice and all parties have agreed to expeditiously handle the matter and bring the substantive matter to an end.”

Also responding, Counsel to the APC, Awa Kalu SAN said, “the import of the Stay of the Execution granted and reinforced simply reverses all that INEC may have done in error or compromise of any sort”.

According to him, Senator Owan-Enoh, Senator Ndoma-Egba and other candidates of APC whose names were published by INEC as submitted to them by the National Working Committee of the APC, remains as the status quo and that the court has given the respondents’ counsel up to Friday March 1, 2019 to file their brief on the substantive case and the matter adjourned to Monday 4thMarch, 2019 for hearing.

  • APC wins reps seat in Cross River

The All Progressives Congress ( APC ) has won the Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency seat in the Central Senatorial District of Cross River State in the results announced so far.

The state has eight House of Representative seats and Egbuna’s victory has disrupted the possibility of an all People’s Democratic Party (PDP) affair, as it presently is.

The candidate of the APC, Dr Alex Egbuna, scored 29, 432 votes to beat the candidate of the candidate of the PDP John Gaul-Lebo, who came second with 26, 971. The returning officer was Dr Chike Ekeopkara.

Abi/Yakurr is the constituency of former governor, Liyel Imoke of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

  • PDP insists on results from polling units

…alleges plots to alter election results

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has insisted on the official release of results already delivered at the various polling units for its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

A statement last night by the spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, cautioned that Nigerians will not accept any figures except what was declared and collated from the polling units.

The PDP further alleged that the Buhari Presidency has been mounting pressure on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and dispatching officials to change results in Rivers, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Kogi, Bauchi, Cross River, Borno, Yobe and Edo states among others, in a frenzy to allocate fictitious figures for President Buhari.

“Pathetically, the Buhari Presidency is also threatening the South-East state governors to change results and carve a 25% for Mr. President, a scheme that has already failed.

“In Bauchi state, we are aware of the plots to move thump-printed ballot papers and fabricated results from Bauchi to Dass Local Government Area to upturn PDP’s victory in the results already delivered and announced at the polling units in the area.

“This is why the electoral officials have been delaying moving the results for final collation and announcement. If this plot fails, the APC plans to void the results for Dass.

“In spite of all these, our party assures Nigerians that the hope for a new government led by Atiku Abubakar, is already manifest.

“Our agents and indeed, Nigerians, already have the results as delivered at the polling units and are not ready to accept anything to the contrary. President Buhari and the APC should therefore quietly come to terms with the fact that they have been defeated.

“The PDP therefore cautions INEC to respect the laws and electoral guidelines by upholding and declaring results from the polling units as expressed by Nigerians on Saturday”.
