  • Matriculation: Varsity warns students against cultism, drugs

    The Plateau State University, Bokkos, on Wednesday, warned its 996 new students against cultism, drugs and theft.

    The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Doknan Sheni, gave this warning at the matriculation for the 2016/2017 session in Bokkos.

    “You should count yourselves lucky to be matriculated today because out of no fewer than 10, 000 candidates, who applied to this university, 966 were successful and admitted.

    “As our students, you are implored to study hard and be disciplined, especially by shunning all social vices such as examination malpractice, cultism, hard drugs, drunkenness, rape, and other misconducts that might earn you expulsion’’.

    According to him, the university’s motto is: “Knowledge, Diligence and Integrity

    Sheni said the institution had a culture of sticking to its principles and norms, which were in conformity to global best practices and the drive for the achievement of standards among Nigerian universities.

    “You must, therefore, as a matter of fact, choose to conduct yourselves responsibly, to justify the confidence reposed in you by the admission offered to you’’.

    Sheni said the university would teach them about ethics and good conduct besides their education programmes, to qualify and be worthy in character and learning.

    He said the management of the institution was committed to bequeathing a legacy of a functional, effective and efficient university system, comparable to other highly-rated institutions in the world.

    The Vice-Chancellor disclosed that the National Universities Commission (NUC) had scored the first convocation of the university 95 per cent.

    He advised Local Governments, wealthy individuals and philanthropists to invest in the university by building hostels, hotels or motels that could enable them to generate revenue.

    “Besides our students and staff, who are staying outside the university campus, our guests, who come to attend our functions can be accommodated there.

    “I am ready to give land to any developer, especially the LGs, to build their hostels that will be named after the councils, which will continue to generate funds for them,’’ he assured.

    Provost warns freshers against indiscipline, cultism

    Fresh students of the Federal College of Education in Eha-Amufu, Enugu State, have been warned against getting involved in cultism and examination malpractice. The Provost, Prof Benjamin Mbah, said the Anti-corruption Vanguard established in the college by  the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is empowered to check indiscipline in the college.

    Prof Mbah spoke at the college’s 2016/2017 matriculation, where 1,000 students took the oath. He said any student caught for indiscipline by the anti-corruption body would be punished severely. He also advised the students to study hard, noting that the college would not condone examination malpractice. He said Exam Ethics Marshal set up by management would be fully involved in the supervision of examinations.

    Prof Mbah said: “I am pleased to let you know that ICPC has set up Students’ Anti-corruption Vanguard in this college to wage war against corrupt practices. The college also set up Exam Ethics Marshal that will monitor the conduct of examinations. I, therefore, warn you against cheating in examination or bribing any lecturer to pass. Be mindful of the college rules and regulations. Severe penalty awaits anyone who breaches the school rules.”

    The provost said the college gave priority to academic excellence, good character and entrepreneurial skills. He said the students made a wise decision to have chosen the college to pursue their career in education, advising them to prepare for the challenges.

    According to him, the award of National Certificate in Education (NCE) does not come without hard work and perseverance. He advised the freshers to hope for success if they were ready to study hard.

    Prof Mbah assured the students that the college would create enabling environment to aid their learning. He added that management had provided more blocks of classroom, offices and equipped Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centre to help the students in research.

    The college, Prof Mbah said, places premium on ICT knowledge, adding that both staff and the students were expected to be ICT-compliant as he urged the freshers to embrace it.

    A parent, Ozor Ezike, from Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, called on the Federal Government to upgrade the college to degree-awarding institution, pointing out that the college possessed the facility and manpower to be a university.

    A physically-challenged girl, Blessing Ani, admitted into the Department of Biology and Computer, promised to give in her best, saying she would not allow her condition to stop her from realising her dream. She praised the management for finding her worthy of admission, vowing she won’t disappoint her parents’ confidence.

    Rector advises students to shun cultism, violence, exam malpractice

    The acting Rector of Federal Polytechnic Auchi in Edo, Dr. Momodu Jimah, on Wednesday warned newly admitted students in the institution to shun cultism, violence, examination malpractice and others vices.

    The rector, who gave the warning at the opening ceremony of 2016/2017 orientation programme for the fresh students, also advised them to avoid indecent dressing.

    He warned that the polytechnic would not hesitate to expel any student found wanting.

    Jimah also admonished the students to imbibe dialogue, peaceful co-existence, discipline and hard work to excel in their academics.

    “You are coming into the polytechnic at the time the institution is undergoing renewal and rebirth.

    “Our aim is to reposition the polytechnic so that both staff and students imbibe the virtues of transparency, truth and hardwork.

    “There are sanctions for breaches of school rules and regulations; there are sanctions for cheating in examinations which may result to rustication or even expulsion of student involved.

    “The institution emphasis is on discipline and learning. We abhor cultism in whatever form and we shun improper dressing.

    “Students must live within the tenets and rules of the polytechnic by ensuring they do not involve themselves in any act of lawlessness and indiscipline,’’ he said.

    The rector assured the students that staff and management of the institution would provide the enabling environment for them to excel.

    Earlier, the Dean of Students Affairs, Mr Godwin Okpeduo said that the institute was known for its uncompromising and sustained policy of zero tolerance to social vices and academic dishonesty.

    “The polytechnic will not condone actions which contravene its regulations or behaviours that portray the image of the polytechnic in bad light,’’ he said.

    Police parade 17 suspected cultists, armed robbers in Bayelsa

    The police in Bayelsa State, Thursday, paraded 17 suspected youths arrested in connections with armed robbery and cultism.

    One of the suspects identified as Innocent Chidoka was arrested for robbing his passenger, Mrs Happiness Orukipadi along Mbiama-Yenagoa road of her bag containing personal belongings.

    Chidoka was reportedly nabbed in the act while his dagger, handbag of the victim and a tricycle with registration number KMR 589 WL were recovered from him.

    The Commissioner of Police, Asuquo Amba, who paraded the suspects said one Joseph Precious, who threw his pistol away and escaped from a crime scene after attacking one Solomon Preye at a gunpoint, was apprehended by the police.

    He said the Anti-Robbery Squad later sighted Precious, a suspected cultist, at Tombia Roundabout in Yenagoa and arrested him adding that the suspect led the police to recover another locally made revolver pistol.

    Amba said the police also rounded up three suspected cultists, Ese Jacob, Endurance Dede and Nwobiara Chinedu, who gathered at the Transformer Junction, Swali planning to unleash trouble in Swali Community.

    He said: “The Police swung into action and arrested the three suspects. A locally-made pistol and a live cartridge were recovered from the suspects. The suspects confessed to the crime and admitted to be members of the Greenland Secret Cult.

    “In Sagbama Town, a leader of a notorious secret cult group, one Peremobowei Eyitimbai was arrested with a locally-made pistol and two live pistols.

    “Policemen on patrol along Tombia-Amassoma Road arrested one Ovieni Johnson. A locally made single barrel pistol with one live cartridge was recovered from him”.

    On strategies adopted by the police to fight crimes in the state, he said: “We have intensified patrols and surveillance. Members of the public are more willing to volunteer useful information.

    “This strategy has paid off with the arrest of armed robbers, recovery of firearms, recovery of cars and arrest of suspected cultist”.

    Amba said having effectively tackled kidnapping in the state, the issue of cultism had become rampant in the state.

    But he said that his command was engaged in a mass arrest of suspected cultists adding that anybody apprehended would be diligently prosecuted.

    He urged parents to pay attention to the activities of their children to discourage them from getting involved in cultism.

    The authorities of the University of Ilorin (Unilorin) has warned its new students against cultism and pornography.

    The students were advised to adhere strictly to the rules guiding the institution’s operations as anyone found contravening them will be rusticated.

    Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, and Acting Registrar Mrs. Rebecca Okojie, gave the warning in Ilorin.

    Prof. Ambali told the students they were the lucky few of the 110,675 candidates who applied for admission, noting that the figure was the highest number of applicants for a single university in the country.

    According to him, 103,482 candidates chose Unilorin as their first choice, with about 65,417 making 180 and above in their Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examinations.

    Seventy-five thousand, six hundred and five candidates registered for the post-UTME screening. The university admitted 13,570, of which only 10,886 registered.

    Ambali told the students the admission was a golden opportunity to launch them to lofty heights if properly treasured.

    “I expect the best from you our new students. I expect nothing but hard work from you. There is no room for vices here, once you are caught, you are gone.

    “This set means a lot to me because you are the last I will admit before my tenure ends,” he said.

    Mrs. Okojie warned the students to shun cultism and pornography on and outside the campuses, adding that the university had zero tolerance for indecent dressing.

  • Cultism attracts 10- year jail term in Kwara

    Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed has warned youths in the state to eschew cultism.

    He added that anyone found guilty of involvement in cultism and other related activities risks a 10-year jail term, rustication and fine.

    Ahmed said this in Ilorin at the 23rd Combined Convocation of Kwara State Polytechnic.

    He said: “Let me draw your attention to a growing social problem.  While most students are responsible and focused on achieving success in their education, a small minority choose to indulge in negative and criminal behaviour such as cultism.

    “Let me make this very clear. My administration has no tolerance for cultism and related activities within and outside academic institutions. Anyone found guilty of involvement in such illegality risks a 10-year jail term, a hefty fine and rustication.

    “Consequently, parents, guardians and other members of society must keep an eye on their wards and report unusual behaviour or movement to security agencies for investigation.”

    He advised tertiary institutions in the country to make entrepreneurship a compulsory rather than elective first year course.

    He also urged the polytechnic to be innovative in solving technological problems.

    “I therefore, encourage the polytechnic to continue to embark on technological innovations that will address our numerous socio-economic problems and exploit emerging opportunities by partnering with the private sector in order to access funding for their research and a market for your innovations.

    “The boom in Nigeria’s information and communications technology sector is an example of the relevance of technology in economic advancement and employment generation,” he said.

    Earlier, the Rector of the institution, Alhaji Masud Elelu, said no fewer than 48,761 students graduated with National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND).

    EKSU student jailed two years for cultism

    An Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti yesterday sentenced a man, Adekunle Iyanu, to two years imprisonment for belonging to Black Axe Cult.
    The accused, who was a student of Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, was arrested behind the campus on July 24, 2013 at Ifaki-Ekiti.
    The prosecution counsel, Femi Onipede, tendered exhibits recovered from the accused with his confessional statement.
    Justice Oluwatoyin Abodunde held that the prosecution had established the case beyond reasonable doubt.
    She was of the opinion that the menace of cults should be curtailed and culprits punished.
    The defence counsel, Chris Omokhafe, urged the court to be lenient with his client, saying he was a first-time offender.
    Justice Abodunde sentenced the accused to two years imprisonment without any options of fine, saying this would serve as deterrent to others.
    An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court has sentenced an Islamic scholar, Rahman Osupa Adini, to three months imprisonment for assault and stealing.
    The cleric was convicted of six-count charge preferred against him by the state.
    The 49-year-old was arraigned on February 22, 2010 at 9:45 am together with his wife, Yemisi, at Olorunsogo, Zone 5, Adebayo Street, Ado-Ekiti.
    The scholar was charged with conspiracy, stealing, wilful damage, assault occasioning harm, giving false information to the police with an intention to cause the police to act against Jibodu Abiodun, who he had assaulted.
    Prosecution counsel Femi Onipede, who called four witnesses, tendered series of evidence to prove his case.
    Defence counsel Rotimi Adabenbe pleaded for mercy after the court had convicted his client.
    Chief Magistrate Adesoji Adegboye discharged Yemisi for lack of evidence and sentenced the accused to three months on each of the six-count charges but to run concurrently without any option of fine.

    Policeman arrested for ‘cultism’ in Calabar

    The Cross River State Police Command yesterday paraded 35-year-old Constable Kingsley Iyieke for alleged involvement in the cult clash that led to the death of two policemen last month.

    Police Commissioner Jimoh Ozi-Obeh said Iyieke was fingered by one of the arrested suspects.

    He was accused of being a member of one of the cults.

    The police boss said: “It is unfortunate that one of us was involved in such incident.”

    He said Iyieke, attached to the Marine Unit, had been dismissed and would soon be arraigned.

    The suspect told reporters that he was not a member of a cult.

    He said he knew nothing about what he was being accused of.

    Ozi-Obeh has reunited a 16-year-old secondary school pupil, Kingsley Akom, who was abducted by suspected human traffickers in Oyo State, but was rescued in Calabar by a surveillance team of the State Housing Police Division, with his parents.

    He said the police were on the trail of suspected kidnappers, who abducted a female civil servant with the Ministry of Health last Friday in Calabar.
