    Cultists kill community’s deputy chairman in Rivers

    Suspected cultists on Saturday killed the Vice-Chairman of Obelle Council of Chiefs in Emohua Local Government Area, Rivers State, Ferdinand Dabiri.

    The attackers said to be suspected members of the dreaded Iceland cult group stormed a location where Dabiri and other chiefs were rounding off a meeting and shot him dead.

    A leader of the assassination identified simply as Cairo was said to have alighted from a motorbike with a gun, bypassed other chiefs and shot his target twice.

    The son of the deceased, Joseph Dabiri, confirmed the incident in Port Harcourt while his brother added that the incident had been reported to the Rumuji Police Division

    Joseph said: “I heard that a guy came with a gun while my father was in a meeting at Omuwoka village in Obelle, and shot at him.

    “Then somebody grabbed him (gunman) but he struggled and freed himself from the man’s grip and shot my dad again twice and fled.”

    The Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed the incident, saying investigation was ongoing.

    She said: “I can confirm the incident. From the situation report I got one ‘Cairo’ went to the Obelle community and shot somebody while they were holding a meeting.

    “The command has commenced investigation into the matter to ensure the perpetrators will be identified and made to face justice. The deceased’s body has been deposited in the morgue”.

    It was gathered that the assailants killed the community chief on Saturday evening causing panic in the area.

    The attackers said to be suspected members of the dreaded Iceland cult group reportedly stormed a location where Dabiri and other chiefs were rounding off a meeting and shot him dead.

    A leader of the assassination identified simply as Cairo was said to have alighted from a motorbike with a gun, bypassed other chiefs and shot his target twice.

    He was said to have stayed momentarily to confirm that the victim was dead before he zoomed off with his gang members.

    Other chiefs immediately ran to different locations for safety while some villagers swiftly fled their homes.

    The son of the deceased, Joseph Dabiri, confirmed the incident in Port Harcourt.

    The victim’s second son said the incident had been reported to the Rumuji Police Division and demanded justice for his late father.

    The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed the incident, saying investigation was ongoing.

    Gunmen, cultists kill police inspector, corporal, vigilante in Rivers, Plateau

    Gunmen suspected to be herders have killed a police inspector, Yakubu Dauda, and seized his rifle in the Chwelnyap Rim community of Riyom Local Government Area, Plateau State.

    Also in Rivers State, rampaging cultists have killed a police corporal identified as Francis Friday and a member of a vigilante group, OSPAC, Ngozi Ipah, beside the Ahoada East Council Secretariat.

    Confirming the Plateau State incident to journalists in Riyom during a visit by the fact-finding committee set up by Governor Caleb Mutfwang to investigate the causes of violence plaguing the state, David Tsado, the DPO of Riyom, said the incident occurred on Monday while officers were on an operation in the area.

    Tsado narrated that the gunmen, who arrived in large numbers, ambushed the officers, resulting in the death of one officer during the operation.

    He explained that the gunmen terrorizing the area were well-armed, adding that despite mobilizing their men after the attack, they were unable to overcome the gunmen’s resistance because they were well armed.

    “Yesterday, my men were on ground in the community following a report of security threats in the area not knowing that some gunmen laid an ambush.

    “In the process of tracing the gunmen, they opened fire on our men and one of us, inspector Yakubu Dauda, unfortunately lost his life. His copse has been deposited in the hospital.

    “Today, the commissioner of police deployed more men to take the fight to their den, but it was another heavy encounter. It got to a stage that we have to retrieve,“ the DPO said.

    The chairman of the fact finding committee, Major General Nicholas Rogers, while speaking on the committee’s visit to the area, said they were at the council to find out what went wrong resulting to the incessant killing and attacks in the area, adding that “it is a very bad situation. We are here to identify the problems and gathered suggestions from stakeholders on who to would relevant find lasting solutions.

    Youth and community leaders informed the committee that many villages were attacked, adding that in the last one month, about nine persons were killed and 33 houses burnt, hoping that the establishment of the community would bring an end of the attacks.

    It was gathered that the attackers in Rivers State, said to be members of the Iceland cult group, stormed the OSPAC office and opened fire on the operatives.

    The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the development and described it as a brutal attack, noting that it happened at about 8pm on Monday.

    The police spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said the armed assailants were led by two men, Umegbewe Kingsley aka Gutam and one Opaka.

    “During the assault, OSPAC operative Ngozi Ipah was shot. While escaping, the assailants also gunned down a police officer, Corporal Francis Friday, who was on special duty at the Secretariat with the Special Intervention Squad (SIS)”, the statement said.

    It said the police patrol teams led by the Divisional Police Officer arrived at the scene, but the attackers had already fled.

    Both victims of the attack were rushed to the Ahoada General Hospital with multiple gunshot wounds but were pronounced dead on arrival, and their bodies were deposited at the hospital morgue for autopsy.

    The Commissioner of Police, (CP) Olugbenga Adepoju, visited the scene and deployed tactical teams to the area.

    The police boss directed the Area Commander and DPO to intensify efforts to track down and arrest the perpetrators.

    He vowed that the killers of the police officer and the OSPAC operative would not escape justice and urged residents to remain calm and cooperative by reporting any suspicious individuals or activities to the nearest police station.

    JUST IN: Five cultists feared killed as supremacy tussle resumes in Mushin

    At least five notorious cultists have been feared killed after rival gangs resumed supremacy battle in the Mushin area of Lagos at the weekend.

    The gang war said to be between members of the Aye and Eiye cult groups, it was gathered, started from Ilasa and soon escalated to Ile-Epo, Idiaraba, Tollgate and Ilupeju areas of the local government area.

    Sources told our  correspondent that one of the deceased known as Debo alias Zaydee, a resident of Olufunmilayo Street, was among the top cult leaders of Eiye in the area.

    It was gathered that his brother, also a suspected cultist, was allegedly killed a few years ago during gang war.

    Trouble was said to have started on Saturday morning after suspected Eiye members killed one Elijah, said to be an Aye.

    The death of Elijah, it was gathered, angered members of his gang who went on retaliation against the supposed killers.

    It was gathered that while returning from burying their dead, the hoodlums sighted Debo on a motorcycle, trailed him and dispossessed him of his firearm.

    “They shot him. As if they were not satisfied, they cut his head to be sure he was dead. They also macheted another guy. I heard they killed more than five people, all suspected cultists.

    “People are afraid that the situation might get out of hand. I don’t want to stay outside late because no one knows what will happen,” said a resident who pleaded not to be named.

    Another suspected cultist was said to have been killed near the Mushin Tollgate around 8pm on Saturday.

    A friend to Zaydee who confirmed his death on social media, recalled how he exchanged banter with deceased earlier in the day.

    Gunmen suspected to be cultists have killed a man whose wedding was scheduled for December in Edo.

    The victim, simply identified as Danladi, was reportedly killed at a friend’s shop located about 100 metres from the Esigie Police Division in Oredo Local Government Area, one of the municipal council areas in the state.

    A source, who pleaded anonymity, noted that Danladi was sitting in the shop when the gun emerged from a GLK Benz jeep and shot him twice at close range.

    “Danladi is an easy going guy. He was the son of Seriki Hausa in the area. His death has created a huge vacuum in his family and a painful loss to his would-be wife.

    “He has started sending invitation cards for his wedding to guests. He was billed to tie the knot with his partner in December,” the source said.

    When contacted, SP Moses Yamu, Public Relations Officer of the Police Command in Edo, regretted the renewed cult killings in the state.

    “The command is doing everything within the law to tame cultism in the state. The situation has been brought under control,” he said.

    Yamu, however, called on members of the public to give useful information to the police in helping the fight against cultism and cult related crimes in the state.

    Armed cultists kill four in Rivers community

    Gunmen suspected to be cultists have killed four residents in  Edeoha community in Aboada East Local Government Area of Rivers State.

    The assailants suspected to be members of the Iceland cult group were said to have stormed the community about 2am yesterday with their weapons.

    It was learnt that the gunmen went from house to house in search of their targets, causing panic among residents.

    A source in the community, who spoke in confidence, said the reason for the attack was not known.

    He said: “The whole community was in confusion when they came and started shooting. Three of those killed are natives of Edeoha while the other one is native of Ekata community still in Aboada East LGA but resides in Edeoha.

    “The suspected Iceland cult members who carried out the killing came from a camp in a neighbouring community to carry out the overnight killing at Edeoha.

    “The people killed are not cult members but the attack is believed to have been carried out by cultists who may have been paid to eliminate the four residents over some unclear issues.”

    Members of Ibassa Ijegun Egba Youth Association yesterday decried increasing rate of cultism in their community located in Oriade Local Council Development Area of Lagos.

    The Chairman, Mr. Kareem Idowu, in a statement in Lagos said residents could no longer sleep in their homes comfortably or walk round the community freely.

    He said there had been unrest in the community because of the activities of the cultists.

    “Residents and indigenes are finding it difficult to walk freely. Business merchants cannot go about their businesses without fear.

    “Children can no longer go to school and activities of the community have been placed on hold due to the criminal activities of these notorious cultists, who have taken over our peaceful community.

    “Their notorious action has not only affected the community mentally, but has also affected our community psychologically and economically,” Idowu said.

    He said at first it was a battle between rival groups, but it later degenerated into something else such as daylight robbery, extortion and attempted rape on young girls.

    “They now brutalise and intimidate innocent members of the community with guns, cutlasses, axes and other dangerous weapons. 

    “These cultists are not indigenes. They did not originate from our community,” Idowu said. 

    The General Secretary, Mr. Wakili Jaiyeolu, said the town was deeply rooted in Yoruba culture where members co-existed in peace and harmony.

    “But as we speak now, the reverse is the case, as cultists have taken over our community.” 

    He implored Lagos State Government, Inspector General of Police and others to come to their rescue “before these hoodlums start killing innocent citizens.”

    Gunmen believed to be cultists have killed a young man identified simply as Akpan in the Rumukalabo axis of Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital.

    It was learnt that the man popularly called Fregene was returning from a place he went to watch a football match on Wednesday night when the the assailants trailed and attacked  him.

    The hoodlums reportedly shot Fregene twice in the neck at a close range and immediately fled the scene.

    A source, who spoke in confidence, said: “The man, Akpan body was just there on the ground after the cult boys left. Nobody could do anything because we don’t have guns like these boys.

    “So there was confusion in the area, even people living around ran. The place that used to be very peaceful became something else. People were running helter-skelter to save themselves.”

     Akpan was said to have hailed from Akwa Ibom State but lived in Port Harcourt.

    When contacted, spokesperson of the state police command, Grace Iringe-Koko, said she would find out from the police division near the area.

    The Police Command in Ogun on Tuesday said it had arrested three notorious suspected cultists belonging to ”Eiye Confraternity” at Joju area in Sango-Ota.

    The Police spokesperson in the State,SP Omolola Odutola,made this known in a statement issued to newsmen in Sango-Ota.Ogun.

    According to him,the police command was able to apprehend the suspects as a result of credible information provided by an anonymous citizen.

    Odutola said that the suspected cultists were arrested when the Divisional Police Officer(DPO) Sango Ota, CSP Saleh Dahiru, led his anti-robbery team to School 3 in Joju, Sango.

     She added that it was at this location where the suspects,  Micheal Jackson, Joel Obieva  and Oluwaseun Bamideke, were caught planning their illegal activities.

    Odutola said: “During investigation, the suspects confessed that they were part of a larger gang of “Eiye confraternity”, comprising five members, with their leader still at large.

    “Their intention was to meet at the school before carrying out their planned operation.

    “However, thanks to the swift action of the Sango Division police, they were apprehended before they could execute their nefarious plans.”

    She said that the police were currently making efforts to track down the remaining suspects who managed to escape arrest.

    Odutola further said that the suspects in their custody would be charged to Court once the investigation being conducted by the State Criminal Investigation Department was completed.
