  • Our Girls; Killings; Cup; Fayemi

It is four years+ since our Chibok girls were kidnapped on April 15, 2014. We await the release of the remaining Chibok girls. Inexplicably our Dapchi girl-child, 15 year old, Leah Sharibu is not released. Why have we not extricated this one single girl from the terrifying clutches of Boko Haram?

How is it possible for the Boko Haram to again, just last week, dent Nigeria’s territorial integrity and our security apparatus by raising a terrorist, foreign flag over Nigerian territory? However, as proud Nigerians, we cannot understand why the armed forces appear only after the murderous event. This is in no way to disregard the supreme sacrifice made by so many, largely unsung, gallant officers and men and women, with 23 now Missing In Action (MIA). Because of that sacrifice that we cannot afford to lose another life military or civilian. The armed forces were well-funded during the military era and also judging from the billions stolen by generals and admirals and buried in soak-aways in the civilian era. Can the armed forces be pro-active to prevent ‘take over events’, village massacres, and fake or genuine terrorist activity?

But Boko Haram is not the only battle front in Nigeria.

There is another equally vicious enemy, masquerading as fellow Nigerians! Government and President Buhari must prevent themselves from being seen as Nero ‘Fiddling while Rome Burns’ while people scream in anguish as they die, rot and roast in villages torched by fires, holocausts, set by the vicious herder militias!!

What manner of cumulative evil is one death per day, 10 deaths per day, 20 deaths, 30,40,50, 60, 100, 200  up to and even beyond 300 murders in any single day or night of attacks by Nigerians on Nigerians? The president’s claim that the perpetrators are Gadhafi spawn rings hollow from all reports of survivors. True or false, it should make him spring into action to protect the territorial imperative and is no excuse for allowing the farm destroyers to run amok, unchallenged by our mighty armed forces nationwide which deny complicity. Close all barracks, cancel all leave, and redeploy them to the village war front, garrison the villages to eliminate this scourge.

In Ghana this incursion has been nipped in the bud. And if they really are Gadhafi spawn, are they invincible, invisible or merely being wrongly reported to Buhari by his intelligence? Does that presidential ‘ID’ not instantly make them instant invading terrorists and mercenaries? Government and National Assembly (NASS) warn of fire and brimstone against South Africa when one single unfortunate Nigerian is killed. But strangely, they have collective inertia and incoherent plans when Nigerian villagers are wiped out. No one is brought to justice. We appear to be at war with a fake or ghost enemy. This calls for commando type units to protect Nigeria’s rural populations before the farms become deserts and Nigeria has a serious famine. We will be forced to give up eating cows reducing their value to zero except to be used for bride price! It is an unbelievable propaganda paradox for the Ministry of Agriculture to ‘rightly’ claim a triumph about rice production, which is good, while ignoring the huge threat to Nigeria’s food supplies of the bloody onslaught of herders. Government must be aware that forced peace without justice and seizing one side’s weapons of self-defense is no peace.

We cannot bring back the dead. Their ancestral line is destroyed. Child survivors will never know their history or even their name. The Buhari government’s failure to save life is a Human Rights failure to meet SDG 8,9,10,16 to protect. It prompts suggestions of complicity about the mounting murderous death toll on and around the Plateau and will have election 2019 consequences as too many voters have first-hand trauma knowledge. Bermuda has its ‘Bermuda Triangle’ of mystery and strange accidents, disappearances of boats, ships and planes and people. The herder-instigated farmer killings create a deadly Plateau Triangle including Benue, Nassarawa states and spilling into Benue, Adamawa and Bauchi and now Sokoto and nationwide. Certainly NASS is impotent. Government must stop the matter today instead of offering alternatives including abandoning one’s ancestral property to the terrorist invaders. And yet we all still shed cow blood for meat provided by the blood shed of thousands. Have we no shame? When is enough blood enough bloodshed?

As we mourn, we congratulate France’s multi-ethnic team for lifting the World Cup in a good clean game. Give opportunity to the youth and witness their Mbappe after Brazil’s teenage Pele. Meanwhile Nigeria’s Footbal Federation members rather risk expulsion /suspension of Nigeria from FIFA than obey FIFA rules thus biting the hand that feeds them and the game of football in Nigeria with millions of often untraceable dollars. Football administrators should be above ‘winning’ or viciously destroying the game.

So even more congratulations to ex-governor and ex-Minister Fayemi for re-winning the Ekiti elections. Educated Ekiti, have witnessed the horrors of anti-judiciary thuggery, Shakespearian Macbethian medical theatrics and a tragic stream of unsolved political murders. Can Fayemi put any demons of his past performance aside and bind all the people of all political parties in a spectacular service manner? Nigeria sorely needs a new breed of leader-Obama, Mandela? You choose. Ekiti’s development cannot afford to lose a minute of one day in the next four years.

  • Nigeria’s participation in Amputee Nation’s Cup uncertain

Pius Asaba, a member of the Amputee Football Federation for Africa (AFFA), has expressed doubts about Nigeria’s participation in the 2017 Cup of African Nations for Amputee Football (CANAF).

Asaba told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos that the Nigeria Amputee Football Federation (NAFF) had yet to pay its affiliation fees from 2014 to 2017.

The former NAFF Secretary-General noted that NAFF was affiliated to AFFA, the official governing body of amputee football in Africa, and organisers of the biennial football tournament.

“NAFF has an issue with AFFA as a result of inability to maintain its annual financial obligation for about four years now. This is affecting its participation.

“This year, CANAF is coming up, and there is no way NAFF can take part in the football tournament without clearing the backlog.

“This lingering problem has affected the development of the sport; it has pushed some amputee footballers to try their hands in other para sports,” Asaba said.

He added that the federation was expected to pay an additional amount for failure to pay the affiliation fee in time.

According to him, letters of reminder about the debt have been sent to NAFF through the Nigeria Paralympics Committee (NPC) – the parent body of physically challenged sports.

“I hope a prompt action will be taken to pay up the outstanding amount.

“The NPC is responsible for all disable sports. It is aware of NAFF’s debt to AFFA and promised to pay but, according to it, insufficient fund is causing the delay,’’ he told NAN.

The official said that the organisers of the tournament had yet to decide on the dates for the competition proposed to be hosted by Ghana.

NAN reports Nigeria’s team occupied the 4th position in CANAF 2013, having lost 3-1 to Ghana in a penalty shoot-out in a quarter final match in Nairobi.

  • Team Offikwu win NCC Tennis League Cup

Kaduna based Team Offikwu Sunday in Lagos completed their fairy tale run by beating defending champions Team Tombim 4-2 to clinch the 2016 NCC Tennis League Cup.

In a tight but exciting tie played at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club and watched by His Excellency, former Vice President, Alex Ekwueme GCON and the Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, Team Offikwu took the two reverse singles to put the tie beyond the reach of defending champions.

The team which debuted this year, had recovered from 2 -0 down Saturday to level the tie 2 -2 and on Sunday the young team took the two reverse singles to make the last mixed doubles match inconsequential.

Sylvester Emmanuel, the arrow head of the “comeback kids” once again proved to be the match winner when he beat national champion, Moses Michael, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 in what proved to be the final match.  Albert Bicom had earlier beaten Emmanuel Paul 6-4, 6-4.

In his remarks, Dalung praised the level of organisation of the competition saying the success of the NCC Tennis League is a testimony that sports in Nigeria is better off being private sector driven.

“The competition was taken to all the zones of the Federation, offered very huge prize monies which made several young men and women millionaires with no kobo coming from government. This is a good example for the Sports Federations to follow.” Dalung said

Sir Alex Ekwueme who expressed delight that Nduka Odizor,” the Duke” was at the finals, expressed delight with the level of play and organization.

“It was a very exciting event and I thoroughly enjoyed the matches. If this competition is sustained Nigeria should be able to produce world beaters in the very near future.” The former Vice President who still plays and follows tennis at the world level passionately, said.

Team Offikwu got N7 million while runners-up Team Tombim got N5 million. Team Civil Defence winners of the third place concluded Friday went home with N4 million while the fourth place team, Team FCT got N2 million.

The competition was organized by the International Tennis Academy.

‘Don’t over celebrate cup semi win’

Nasarawa United head coach, Kabir Dogo has charged his wards not to over-celebrate the Federation Cup semifinal victory against former winners, Enyimba.

“There was nothing special in the cup semifinals victory against Enyimba, we actually prepared quite well for the game knowing the pedigree of the opposition.

“We know the outcome of the encounter could go either way so we were not surprised we won at the end of the day.

“Enyimba are a good side, so are we too, we have met on different fronts, we beat them in the Super Four contest as well as shared the honours in the just-concluded top-flight, so we have the edge over them.

“I can say we are the better and lucky side as well as deserved to win the cup semifinals encounter. We will remain in camp to concentrate as well as stay focused on the final clash against FC IfeanyiUbah.

“I have equally charged the players to cut short the celebration over the victory against Enyimba. I have told them to save the celebration until the trophy is won at the expense of FC IfeanyiUbah.

“I have told the players to forget Enyimba’s win but focus on FC IfeanyiUbah, an equally good side.

“We do not want any distraction that will impede on our dream to win the Federation Cup as well as the ticket to Africa.”

Enyimba players gutted by Fed Cup ouster, says Udoh

Mfon Udoh has stated that Enyimba are disappointed by their inability to qualify for the 2016 Federation Cup final which has ended their hope of playing in the 2017 CAF Confederation Cup.

The team bowed 1-0 to Nasarawa United at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan and the forward said the People’s Elephants experienced some setback in their preparations for the encounter

“We had little issues going into the match but we had overcome it before we travelled to Ibadan,” Udoh told Goal.

“We went there with the conviction that we would beat Nasarawa United and still have a chance to play in the CAF Confederation Cup next year with the final of the Federation Cup still to be played.

“We need to forget about the loss and brace up for next season to correct the mistakes noticed this term. It has been a disappointing season for us all and we must share the blame together.”

  • Unuanel pained by Enyimba’s Cup mishap

Unuanel pained by Enyimba’s Cup mishap

Enyimba’s assistant coach, Samson Unuanel, has said his charges did not play “to their full potentials” in Saturday’s Federation Cup semifinal defeat to Nasarawa United.

Unuanel, however, said they have themselves to blame for failing to beat Nasarawa United on Saturday at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan.

“It was one of the bad games played by Enyimba this season. So many mistakes were made. It hurts because we created so many begging chances but none  was converted. We congratulate Nasarawa United for the win,” Unuanel told supersport.com.

Enyimba failed to successfully defend their Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title, crashed out of the CAF Champions League at the group stage and failed to add to their four Federation Cup triumphs.

Unuanel agrees things could have been a lot better for the club this term and described it as “a bad season”.

“These things happen, even to a big club like Enyimba. When they happen, there is nothing you can do about it. It was a bad season and we will learn from it,” he said.

  • Portugal win Euro 2016 Cup

    Portugal win Euro 2016 Cup

Portugal last night won the first major trophy in their history trouncing host France 1-0 in the final of the Euro 2016 Cup .

The match went into extra time after a goaless 90 minutes, but Eder proved to be the hero with a 109th-minute winner to stun the host at the Stade de France.

The first sight of goal went the way of Portugal after just five minutes when Nani raced on to a ball over the top, but he lifted his effort over the crossbar.

Paul Pogba spurned their first shooting opportunity with a wild strike over the top from the edge of the box, but the first clear opening fell the way of Antoine Griezmann when the striker sliced an effort wide from a tight angle.

Portugal talisman and captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who was bidding to become the highest scorer in European Championships history, was caught by a heavy challenge from Dimitri Payet earlier in the match, and although the 31-year-old tried to continue he was ultimately forced to leave the pitch on a stretcher.

The Real Madrid man was in tears as his Euros dream ended, and his departure seemed to take some of the buzz out of the game too as the two teams began to cancel each other out.

Moussa Sissoko was the one player who looked as though he could make a difference, and midway through the half he made a powerful run forward before lashing a deflected effort over the crossbar.

The Newcastle United midfielder then span away from his man in the penalty area to create shooting space, only to fire his effort straight at Rui Patricio.

Chances continued to be at a premium in the second half too, with Pogba being forced to resort to trying a 35-yard volley before Griezmann sent a tame effort into the arms of Rui Patricio.

It was Griezmann who had the biggest chance of the contest shortly after the hour mark too, escaping his marker to latch on to a cross from Kingsley Coman, only to glance his header over.

Hugo Lloris was finally called into action for the first time with 10 minutes remaining, with the France skipper almost being caught out by Nani’s mis-hit cross.

Lloris could only claw the cross as far as Ricardo Quaresma, but the keeper recovered in time to keep out the winger’s acrobatic follow-up effort.

It was France who were asking most of the questions in the closing stages, though, and Sissoko almost found the breakthrough with a piledriver from range that Rui Patricio needed to push away.

The hosts were inches away from winning the match right at the death when Andre-Pierre Gignac turned his man inside the area, but the striker scuffed his finish against the upright and the rebound eluded Griezmann.

There was to be no breakthrough inside the 90 minutes, though, as the match went all the way to extra time, and Portugal came closest to scoring in the first period of the added 30 when Eder climbed highest in the box to steer a header towards goal, but it was too close to Lloris.

Fernando Santos’s side came even closer after the interval when Raphael Guerreiro curled a free kick against the crossbar, but France failed to heed the warning signs and Portugal wouldn’t have to wait much longer before finally breaking the deadlock.

It was Eder who wrote himself into the history books with the winner, cutting inside before picking out the bottom corner with a low 25-yard strike that Lloris couldn’t get to.

  • Lobi Stars favoured in Cup victory

Lobi Stars favoured in Cup victory

Lobi Stars captain and centre-back Anthony Agbaji has said his side were divinely favoured to win the Federation Cup semifinals match-up against Enugu Rangers.

The two-time Cup winners pied the Coal City side 1-0 in Wednesday’s Cup semifinals clash at the Karkanda Stadium in Katsina.

Striker Eche Idakwo scored the match winner that handed the Pride of Benue the Cup final ticket.

Agbaji said the encounter almost degenerated into a tug of war but that his side were resolute to emerge victorious.

“I strongly believed we were favoured to win the Cup semifinals clash against Enugu Rangers.

“Enugu Rangers proved bookmakers right that they are a force to be reckoned with in the round leather game on the home front.

“The match almost turned out to be a tug of war but we were not ready to give up the challenge.

“Excitement has enveloped the entire camp because of this singular victory and qualification to the Cup final,” said the Lobi Stars strongman to supersport.com.

Agbaji said his side are coming into the final with a resolve to make up for the not too impressive performance in the top flight.

“We are not satisfied with our league performances so we are coming to the Cup final to raise our game with the singular aim of winning the title.

“We want to use the Cup final to prove to our doubters that we can win big competitions,” said Agbaji.
