Celebrating APC members defy curfew in Ado-Ekiti

HUNDREDS of All Progressives Congress (APC) members in Ekiti State yesterday took to the streets of Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, to celebrate the victory of their presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.

The APC loyalists, who were shouting “Sai Buhari”; “Sai Baba”; “APC…Change”, held brooms and Buhari’s posters.

They sang victory songs and gave thanks to God for giving their party, what they called “the coveted presidential crown”.

The members defied the curfew imposed by Governor Ayo Fayose on Monday. They trooped out about 5.30 am and were joined by commercial motorcyclists, artisans, youths and residents.

They danced to Ajilosun, Irona, Ijigbo, Fajuyi, Ilawe Road, Odo Ado, Okesa, Old Garage, Okeyinmi, Oke Ila, among others.

Commercial vehicles and motorcycles were decorated with APC posters, with their occupants joining in chants of Sai Buhari.

One of the celebrators, Okunola Olumide, said no law in Nigeria forbids people from rejoicing legitimate accomplishments, such as naming ceremony, promotion and electoral victory.

“There is no law that bans us from celebrating the victory of our candidate. This curfew cannot stop us. This is our finest hour and we will continue to savour it for years to come,” Olumide said.

Another APC member, Mrs. Wuraola Ogunyemi, said the celebration of Buhari’s victory was a national exercise, and wondered why Fayose would hurriedly issue out orders stopping that of Ekiti State.

The APC members advised the governor to allow APC lawmakers perform their duties or “risk another round of impeachment”.

“Ordinarily, we do not have problems with Fayose as a governor as long as he allows our lawmakers perform their duties and stop attacks on our secretariat.

“Fayose had written those of us in APC off, in the political arrangement of Ekiti State, because he said a few days ago that his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would win all the Assembly seats, we shall see how he will achieve that now.”

Though they praised him for being the first governor to congratulate Buhari, the members said his latest actions were belated and self-serving.

Throughout the period of the road show, policemen provided cover for jubilating APC members and controled the traffic.

    Dusk-to-dawn curfew in Ekiti

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in the state.

The governor, in a broadcast to the people, said the curfew takes effect from 7.30 pm to 6 am.

He advised people to be moderate in their reaction to the result of the presidential election, which the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, won.

The curfew is believed to have been imposed to prevent wild jubilation in the opposition camp, which may provoke members of the ruling party and other Jonathan sympathisers.

The governor urged Nigerians to accept the result of the presidential election in good faith, saying the outcome of the poll reflects the will of God and Nigerians.

He said the result also reflects the will of all lovers of peace, progress and development of Nigeria.

A statement by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, hailed the resilience and commitment of President Goodluck Jonathan and Gen. Buhari.

The governor said the election results should not be seen as victory or loss for any party, adding: “To me, Nigerians and democracy won.”

He praised Nigerians for believing in the democratic process.

“By this election, Nigerians have shown that democracy has come to stay in the country.”

Fayose said: “I salute Nigerians, especially the people of Ekiti State.

“I salute President Jonathan for laying the most solid foundation for democracy in Nigeria.  And I salute Major General Buhari for being a resilient and dogged fighter.

“I urge Nigerians, irrespective of their ethnic, religious and political affiliation to respect the outcome of the election in the interest of peace, progress and development of the country.

“Nigeria, as a country, is greater than any individual or group and it is my plea that no one should do anything to rock the boat of peace in the country.”

Curfew: Ekiti residents grumble over security agents’ alleged harassment

THE imposition of the dusk-to-dawn curfew in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, by the state government two weeks ago was primarily meant to curtail the excesses of hoodlums who had gone on the rampage, brutalising perceived opponents of a prominent political figure in the state.

That was shortly after thugs had beaten up judges and other judicial officers within the court premises. Before the announcement of the curfew, the matter had nearly gone out of hand when Chief Omalafe Aderiye, a former chairman of the National Union of Road Tranport Workers (NURTW), was killed by alleged assassins.

Hoodlums seized the occasion to unleash arson on the belongings of perceived opponents. Scores of houses and vehicles were torched in the uprising, which halted the peace, espencially in Ado-Ekiti for almost three days. The imposition of the curfew was, therefore, generally seen as a welcome development.

The curfew itself had been very effective. Since the imposition, no major outbreak of unrest and destruction of property had been recorded, while motor parks and the major streets become deserted daily from 7:00pm when the curfew takes effect.

All would have been home around 7:00 pm, while those who are still outside by then would find their way home by stealth. As admitted by a large section of the people and from investigations by this reporter, compliance with the curfew has been effective. It has, however, been lamentation galore

24 Hours Curfew imposed on Kafanchan as Buhari cancel visit

A 24 hours curfew has been imposed on Kafanchan, Jema’a local government area of Kaduna as a result of the alleged killing of two youths who were said to be among an unruly crowd insisting that jungle justice be meted out to suspected 32 Fulani men arrested by the Army with weapons in Kafanchan.

The incident which has generated tension across southern Kaduna led to the cancellation of the visit by former Head of State and a Chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC) to Bondong in Kaura local government area of the state to condole with victims of the recent attack on three villages in the district which left over 120 people dead.

However, the state governor, Mukthar Ramalan Yero called on resident of the area to remain calm and law abiding as Government is doing all within its powers to sustain peace in the entire state.

In a statement made available to The Nation, the Director General, Media and Publicity to the Governor, Ahmed Maiyaki quoted the governor as telling the people to remain calm and desist from taking the laws into their hands to avoid throwing the state into confusion and anarchy.

The Governor Yero said security operatives have intensified surveillance across the state aimed at foiling any attempt by miscreants and criminals to attack innocent citizens in the area and called on all law abiding citizens to cooperate with Government and the Security agencies in the ongoing push to rid the state of hoodlums and evil doers.

The governor said “this is not the time for people to obstruct the course of justice by attempting to perpetrate barbaric acts of jungle justice. Government and indeed security forces will never fold their arms and allow people take laws into their own hands.

“We want to assure the entire people of Kaduna State that in our resolve to end the spate of unwarranted attacks on innocent citizens, Government will continue to work with security agencies to ensure that those behind the various killings in the state are brought to justice. This will be vigorously pursued without fear or favour”.

Sources in the area told The Nation that soldiers on routine patrol in the area had arrested some men with weapons and once the information filtered into the town, some youth gathered and insisted that they be released to them.

One Yashim Bonnat who claimed to be a youth leader in Kafanchan,  “I am around the Railway Junction of Kafanchan town. Youths have surrounded an office around here where soldiers are keeping 32 Fulani men that they caught this morning around 10am while trying to fuel their truck.

“I saw with my eyes the weapons recovered from them. They included 12 AK riffles, about 13 den guns, a bag of ammunition, all kinds of machetes, knives, and what looks like improvised explosives among others. They are displaying the arms and made the men to seat in front of them. No one needs tell you that they are Fulani men. . . This is making the youths here very angry.

“They are saying that the men were coming to attack Kafanchan and that it was God that apprehended them. So they want the soldiers to release them to be lynched by them. You can hear the shooting of guns in the air to scare them away. My nose is choking with tear gas too”, he said and hung up.

When contacted, spokesman of the Kaduna State Police Command DSP Aminu Lawan, said he was not in a position to comment on the issue as it was an operation of the Army and not the police saying “It is the Army that arrested the people. It is the Army that is said to have shot people. They have not briefed us. I cannot speak for them,” he said.

Assistant Director, Army Public Relations office of the One Mechanised Infantry Division, Kaduna, Col.Usman Abdul said though he had heard of the arrests and the violence in Kafanchan, he has not been sufficiently briefed to make any statement to the Press, and asked for more time.
