  • Danfo driver jailed one month for stealing retired police officer’s wallet

    An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Thursday sentenced the driver of a commercial bus, Obinna Obasi, to one month imprisonment for stealing a retired police officer’s wallet containing N33, 000 and 20 dollars.

    Magistrate Ope Agbe convicted Obasi, 36, following his plea of guilty to a one-count charge of stealing, contrary to Section 287(7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    He said the devil pushed him to steal the wallet.

    Earlier, prosecuting Sergeant Cyriacus Osuji, who reviewed the facts of the case, said Obasi committed the offence on 28 August, 2018 at Chevron roundabout, Ajah, Lagos.

    He said Obasi drove his Volkswagen T4 bus with Reg. No LSD 61 XT dangerously and hit the complainant’s Lexus SUV, causing it damage.

    The convict agreed to follow the complainant to his panel beater and repair the SUV, following which the complainant told him to get in the back seat of vehicle.

    They drove to the panel beater’s workshop, but as soon as they got there, Obasi told the complainant that he was going to the bank to withdraw money to pay the panel beater.

    He left and did not return.

    When the complainant checked his vehicle, he discovered that his wallet containing N33, 000, $20, his driving license, Voters Card, Retired SPO Identity Card, and three Automated Teller Machine cards were missing.

    Obasi was subsequently arrested by the Ajah Police Division, Lagos.

  • Man attempts suicide in police cell

    A secondary school dropout, Owolabi Ogunwande, who allegedly attempted to hang himself at a toll gate and in a police cell in Lagos, was on Monday brought before an Igbosere Magistrates Court, Lagos.

    Ogunwande, 27, was arraigned on two-count charge of attempted suicide before Mr Aro Lambo.

    Prosecuting Inspector Cyriacus Osuji said Ogunwande committed the offence on June 28 at about 1:30 pm, at Toll Gate, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, in Eti- Isa local government area.

    He also committed the same offence at about 11:30 am on Monday, in a cell at Maroko Police Station, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

    On both occasions Ogunwande tried to hang himself on the neck with a rope, the court heard.

    According to Osuji, the offences contravened Section 235 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Ogunwande pleaded guilty to the charge. Magistrate Lambo adjourned till July 3, to hear the facts of the case and for sentencing.

    A police source told The Nation that Ogunwande, from Osun State, dropped out at Junior Secondary School (JSS) 3 and worked as a wood loader for seven years before coming to Lagos on March 5, to seek greener pastures.

    He allegedly attempted suicide after finding it difficult to survive in Lagos, but he was rescued by a Man O’ war, official, identified only as Omotayo.

    The source quoted Ogunwande as saying: “When I couldn’t get a job in Lagos, I decided to go back home to Osun State, but I had no money on me, and there was also no food, for me to eat, so that was how I decided to take my life”.

    “I want to kill myself as there is nothing to show for being alive, life has no more meaning to me again.”

  • Three men arraigned for stealing N2.2m property

    Three unemployed men were on Friday arraigned in an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly breaking into a company premises and stealing some items worth N2.2 million.

    The men are Benjamin Anthony, 28, Stephen Azeez, 28, and Dotun Adetoun, 42.

    They reside at a slum area of Victoria Island. They are standing trial on charges of conspiracy and stealing.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Cyriacus Osuji, told court that the three men committed the offences on May 16 at Lekki Phase 1 on the Lekki-Epe Expressway.

    He said that they conspired and stole tarpaulin, valued at N1.4 million and lights, valued at N800, 000, belonging to an advertising company, e-Motion Advertising Nigeria Ltd.

    Osuji said the offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The three men, however, denied the charges.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Abimbola Komolafe, granted them bail in the sum of N100, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

    She said that the sureties must be gainfully employed, resident in Lagos State and must show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Komolafe adjourned the case until June 29 for mention.

     

  • Shopkeeper, guard bolt with employer’s N1.8m

    A shopkeeper, Ebe Onyekozuru, and a security guard, Chijioke Anyagham, who allegedly stole his employer’s N1.8 million, was on Thursday brought before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Both Onyekozuru, 23, and Anyagham, 25, are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Cyriacus Osuji, told the court that the two men committed the offences on April 18 at Shop FA 71/72, Oluwole Urban Market on Lagos Island.

    Osuji said the stolen money belonged to Mr Philip Chukwudoluo, a businessman, who deals in children’s clothes.

    “Onyekozuru stole the proceeds from clothes he sold and deposited the money in Anyagham’s bank account.

    “The missing money was discovered when a stock of the goods in the shop,’’ he said.

    The offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 provides a three-year imprisonment for stealing, while Section 411 stipulates a two-year jail term for conspiracy.

    The duo, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O. Kusanu, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

    She said the sureties must be gainfully employed and should also provide evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case was adjourned until May 30 for mention.

  • Security guard faces N 2.5m fraud charge

    A 26-year-old security guard, Mohammed Andoka, who allegedly obtained N2.5 million from accommodation seekers under false pretences, was on Wednesday brought before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Andoka, who resides at No. 27, Oladimeji St., Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and fraud.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Cyriacus Osuji, told the court that the accused committed the offences on March 13, at 2:00pm., at his residence.

    He alleged that the accused fraudulently obtained the sum of N2.5 million from the complainant, one Mrs Ruth Obaseki, under the guise of renting a three-bedroomed flat to her.

    Osuji said that the accused failed to rent the apartment to the complainant as agreed, after collecting the money.

    The offences contravened Sections 285, 312 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    The Magistrate, Mr Martins Owumi, granted the accused N500, 000 bail, with two sureties in like sum.

    He said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and must show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Owumi said that the sureties must deposit N100, 000 in the court registrar’s account.

    The magistrate also ordered that the sureties must swear to affidavit of means, and have their addresses verified.

    He adjourned the case until April 20, for mention.

     

  • Housekeeper jailed five- year for stealing employer’s jewellery

    An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on Friday sentenced a 22-year-old housekeeper, Kennedy George, to five years’ imprisonment for stealing his employer’s jewellery and cash worth N6.3 million.

    Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. A. T. Omoyele, convicted George after he admitted to stealing his boss Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card to withdraw the money.

    The housekeeper, however, claimed he was not the only one that spent the money.

    George, who lived with his employer, was arraigned on June 19, 2015, on a three-count charge of conspiracy and stealing preferred against him by the police.

    He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted N250,000 bail with the two sureties in like sum.

    Prosecuting police Corporal, Cyriacus Osuji, told the court that George and others at large committed the offences between February 6, 2015 and June 2015, at about 10:00am, at Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

    Osuji alleged that the defendant stole the sum of N300,000 and assorted gold jewellery worth N6 million, property of his employer (name withheld).

    He called two witnesses and said the offences contravened Sections 285(7) and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos Stat, 2011.
