Eyes on Dessers, Balogun in Old Firm Derby at Celtic

On the strength of their recent performances,  Super Eagles duo of defender Leon  Balogun and striker Cyriel Dessers should be in the mix when  Celtic w host Rangers at Celtic Park tomorrow  in a highly anticipated Old Firm derby clash between the top two teams in the Scottish Premiership.

The hosts could extend their lead at the top of the standings to 19 points with a win, while the visitors will be aiming to close the gap to 13 points.

Celtic have been the dominant force in Scottish football in recent history, and their grip on the domestic competitions looks set to remain unshaken this season.

The Bhoys have already lifted the Scottish League Cup, defeating Rangers on penalties, while they are into the semi-finals of the Scottish FA Cup and hold a significant 16-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Brendan Rodgers has led Celtic to 24 wins, three draws and two defeats from their 29 league fixtures, and their 76-point haul has left them in control of the Scottish Premiership, sitting comfortably 16 points above Rangers.

With only nine games left in the campaign, a victory on Sunday could virtually secure Celtic’s title, potentially extending their lead to 19 points with just 24 points remaining.

Celtic are certainly the favourites heading into the encounter, having won all of the last eight Old Firm clashes at Celtic Park, though Rangers did record a 3-0 triumph in the latest meeting.

The Gers will be extremely disappointed with how their season has played out, failing to mount a real challenge for the Scottish Premiership title, while they also lost in the Scottish League Cup final and crashed out of the Scottish FA Cup against Queen’s Park.

Super Eagles attacker, Cyriel Dessers celebrated his inclusion in the 39 man senior national team provisional squad with a Man of the Match performance for Rangers in their 3-1 away  win at Fenerbahce in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Europa League tie.

Leon Balogun had predicted a tough battle against Jose Mourinho-led side im but it was Dessers that put the Scottish side ahead  in the seventh minute . Fenerbahce then  rallied to equalise in the 30th  minute.

Vaclav Cerny scored Rangers’  two other goals on the 42nd  and 81st  minute to extend the Gers lead.

Sadly Dessers was denied two scoring opportunities in the 42nd  and 81st  minute that would  have increased the tally before he was subbed off in the 88th  minute to a thunderous applause from the travelling fans.

He has been involved in 22 games with one goal in the current campaign.

The other Nigerian that should have dressed for the game was Bright Osayi Samuel of Fenerbahce who was suspended because of accumulated cards.

Elsewhere, in a UEFA Conference League game, Daniel Daga was an unused substitute for Molde who pipped Legia Warsaw 3-2 in Norway.

Balogun, Dessers  get new coach at Glasgow  Rangers

Super Eagles duo  of Cyriel Dessers and  Leon Balogun will now be working  with a new coach following the appointment of  Barry Ferguson as interim manager at Glasgow  Rangers.

This development comes after the dismissal of Philippe Clement after a disappointing 2-0 home loss to Saint Mirren which left the team 13 points behind  leaders, Celtic, in the Scottish Premiership .

According to a statement from the club, Ferguson, a hall of fame member and former club captain who won five league titles, five Scottish Cups and five League Cups across two spells at Ibrox, will be joined by coaches Issame Charai, Neil McCann, Billy Dodds and Allan McGregor.

Rangers CEO, Patrick Stewart, reacted to the sack of Philippe Clement and the appointment of Barry Ferguson, saying: “Philippe and his team have worked tirelessly during their time in at the club and have played an important role in developing the first team’s young players.

“I want to reiterate, the issues we are facing run deeper than the manager. The ongoing football review seeks to address those issues, and we will continue to implement its findings in the coming weeks and months ahead of appointing a new, permanent manager.

“When I spoke to RangersTV last week, I was clear that everyone is judged on results, and nobody will get unlimited time in any role at the club. Ultimately, the team’s response following their early exit from the Scottish Cup was a cause for deep concern, leading the board to conclude that action had to be taken now.

“I want to wish Philippe every success in the future. He is a fine man whom I have enjoyed working with in my short time here so far.”

“I also want to welcome Barry back to the club. We appreciate him and his team stepping into the role at this difficult time. Myself, the board and the executive team will give them our full support for the rest of the campaign,” he concluded.

Barry Ferguson’s tenure as Rangers head coach begins on Wednesday with an away match against Kilmarnock. Dessers, the team’s top scorer with 18 goals this season, will aim to make a positive impact and help Ferguson start his new role on a high note.

Meanwhile, Leon Balogun will be working towards regaining full fitness in time for Rangers’ crucial upcoming fixtures under Ferguson’s leadership.

  • CYRIEL DESSERS: My partnership with Hamza great

CYRIEL DESSERS: My partnership with Hamza great

Looking beyond Rangers’ domestic inconsistency, Nigerian international and top striker of the team Cyriel Dessers, says he would rather look at the positives in the season.  Dessers urges his Rangers teammates to seize the opportunity as they look to take a step closer to silverware at the biggest stage in Europe.

The Light Blues’ form from domestic to European football has been night and day with a Europa League top eight finish booking a direct qualification to the last 16 of the competition. But on home soil it has been a much different story. Sunday’s 3-1 away win at Hearts brought the gap to rivals Celtic back down to 13 points – but the result doesn’t tell the whole story with results on their travels proving a real problem this season.

Philippe Clement and his troops also lost to Brendan Rodgers’ men in the Premier Sports Cup Final while they suffered a massive shock defeat to Queen’s Park in their own backyard – a result that effectively ended hopes of landing domestic silverware this season. Dessers knows ‘significant improvement’ is required if they are to challenge the Hoops for the title, but says everyone inside the walls of Ibrox is determined to put in the hard graft to close the gap and compete at the highest level.

“I think we are even more aware that this is a big opportunity and it is very important for us, that we need to go for it and seize the chance.”

    BRILLIANT FORM

The striker has spoken of his form of late which has seen him net five goals in five outings.

Also Dessers’ strike at Old Trafford against Manchester United was voted Men’s Goal of the Month for January.

It was an excellent take-and-finish from the striker in the UEFA Europa League as he got on the end of a long pass from James Tavernier.

Dessers used his body intelligently to nudge defender Harry Maguire out of the flight of the ball and after a lovely touch on his left-side he swept the ball into the bottom corner.

He is also full of praises for fellow forward Hamza Igamane, while hoping their partnership can continue to grow in the coming weeks.

He continued: “I am feeling well at this moment, for me personally it is a good feeling but I think in the last games the whole team shared this feeling as well.

“If I am going on this week there are a lot of positive vibes in this building.

“My partnership with Hamza? I hope that is something that continues, the last three games we have been playing together, I have a very good feeling about this.

“The Scottish league is a very tough league for a striker, you get a lot kicks, knocks, punches and all of these things.

“A lot of times I am fighting against three centre-backs, with Hamza next to me or me next to him I think that causes some distraction there and we can use each other, create space for each other, make them hesitate a little bit more and take the profit out of that.

For me it was nice to play with him, obviously Hamza is a very good player and I hope this partnership can grow.

“I think this was a nice start but there is still a lot of growth left in this partnership for our connection.

“These were also the first few games that we played together because normally we get subbed on or off for each other.

“I am looking forward to that and hopefully we can develop that together.”

The 30-year-old has challenged the Gers to go on a similar run of wins as they did at this stage of last season, with the hopes of getting their hands on trophies with what remains of 2024/25.

He added: “Obviously we are hoping, I think last season in a similar period we had a run of 10 games in a row with a win.

“It would be unbelievable if we could go back to that form in the same stage of the season and you never know what happens.

“We just have to look at it game by game but there is the hunger and the hope to go on a similar run.

“We are still competing in three competitions, I think the confidence that we get from the European games is huge, with getting to the top-eight.

“Something special there is possible, for the league we just need to keep going, you never know what happens and just keep looking at it game by game.

“For the cup it is just a big opportunity to get to a trophy in a couple of games.

“The hunger is here to do something special there as well.”

    LEON BALOGUN

His teammate and fellow Nigerian Leon Balogun is not as patronizing as Cyriel of Rangers branding it ‘too inconsistent.’

Speaking to SportsBoom, he said: “Too inconsistent. I think that’s the most honest review I can give. If you look at Europe, we’ve been pretty good. We got direct qualification to the round of 16, but domestically, too inconsistent.

“I mean, I don’t want to be short or shy for words, but that’s just the perfect description. We’re too inconsistent. That’s why we are where we are in the league, which is sad.”

He continued: “I’ve been fortunate to be part of a team that successfully broke Celtic’s dominance in the past, and I’d love to experience that again. However, at this moment, it’s clear that we have a lot of work to do to challenge Celtic for the title.

“As things stand, we’re behind in the race, and this season has highlighted the need for significant improvement. We’re fully aware of the challenge ahead, but we’re determined to put in the hard work necessary to close the gap and compete at the highest level to reclaim the title.”

    Dressers wanted by Saint-Étienne

Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers could get a lifeline from the French Ligue 1 after he falling out of favour at Scottish giants Rangers.

The 30-year-old striker has not started the season badly and has 12 goals and four assists after 26 games.

However, coach Philippe Clement has increasingly preferred the young Moroccan Haza Igamane in recent weeks, which could now also result in a transfer of Dessers.

Champions League: Dessers over work rate against Dynamo Kiev

The head coach of the Scottish Premier League club Rangers, Philippe Clement has heaped plaudits on Super Eagles attacker,  Cyriel Dessers who missed some scoring chances in the Gers draw against Dynamo Kiev in the qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League.

The Nigeria  International has been under intense criticism despite being the club’s top scorer last season and despite scoring a stoppage time equaliser away on Tuesday night his profligacy still generated discussions among the club’s fans.

Clement who guided the Scottish side to an away draw in the first leg tie praised the work rate of Dessers stating that the Nigerian did not allow the few missed chances affect his game.

“Cyriel kept pushing on to get the goal because he had a few chances that he finished very well and the goalkeeper saved well,” Clement told journalists. “So he kept on believing and I’m happy for him that he scored the goal.

“If you compare him with seven months ago he does much more things good for the team.

” Maybe people have a perception about him, but I know there are no defenders anymore who like to play against him, and he’s only growing, so that’s what we want, the coach said.

Rangers will face Motherwell at home on Saturday in their second game of the season after a goalless draw at Hearts last weekend before facing the Ukrainian side in the return leg at the Ibrox Stadium with a win taking them to the group stage.

Dessers eager to keep scoring for Rangers

Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers has stressed that he will not slow with his season’s objective of scoring as many goals as possible after his matchwinner sealed his 20th  goal of the season in all competitions.

Dessers nabbed the winner in the 2-1 victory at St. Mirren late-on, and he was delighted to be on the end of yet another James Tavernier assist.

He told RangersTV: “20 goals is a beautiful number, but I don’t want to stop there – I want to keep going and I want more.

“Not a lot of Rangers strikers got there in the last years so I think it is a nice milestone for me.

“To score a winner in a game like that feels good. There is no room for errors now so we are very happy we got the win.

“It is not new for Tav – not only this season but also in his whole career, he has given many assists like this, but it was an unbelievable cross which the goalkeeper misread and I was there to make the goal.

“But, we were patient, we knew our moments would come, they would get tired and we made good use of that.”

Meanwhile, Rangers head coach, Philippe Clement, has  praised the resilience of Super Eagles striker, whose matchwinner at St. Mirren helped resurrects the Gers’ Scottish Premiership title ambition.

“Cyriel keeps digging in and keeps fighting for the team,” Clement told the club’s website. “He works really hard and then the moments come, that’s what we tell him all the time and that’s what he’s proving now in these last couple of months when he is scoring a lot of goals and when he becomes more and more important for the club.”

“But it’s difficult to point out one, two, three players – everybody dig  deep and every week it will be someone else who gets the praise of being decisive. But, of course, the quality of Tavernier is important in that way and he has shown that a lot already this season.”
