President Muhammadu Buhari will on Wednesday depart for Istanbul, Turkey to participate in the ninth Summit of the Developing 8 (D-8) on Friday, October 20, 2017.
Prior to the D-8 Summit, President Buhari, at the invitation of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey, will participate in an official working visit to Ankara, the capital city.
A statement by the Special Adviser on Media and publicity, Femi Adesina, said that the President in Ankara will have a tete-a-tete with his Turkish counterpart while delegations from both countries will hold discussions in various fields including defence cooperation, security, educational and migration issues.
Buhari, he said, will also visit the Grand National Assembly of the Republic of Turkey in Ankara where he will meet with the Speaker, Ismail Kahraman.
“While in Istanbul, the Turkish commercial centre, President Buhari will use the occasion of the D-8 Summit to bolster warm and growing ties across a broad range of areas of cooperation with leaders of the D8-member countries, namely Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Pakistan and Turkey.
“The Summit with the theme, ‘‘Expanding Opportunities through Cooperation’’, will among other things, focus on cooperation in the areas of agriculture, trade, transport, energy and increased private sector participation among member-countries.
“During the ninth Summit of the D-8, which will also mark the 20th anniversary of the organisation established to improve the developing countries’ positions in the world economy, the President will highlight the significant show of confidence in Nigeria’s business environment and economy.”
The President, he said, will also affirm Nigeria’s resolve to work with D-8 member-countries on many key areas, including peace and security, economy and trade.
“At the end of the Summit, the Heads of State and Government will adopt a Communiqué, also known as the ‘Istanbul Declaration’.”
The President will be accompanied on the trip by ministers, top government officials, including the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Customs Service, Hameed Ali.

President Goodluck Jonathan returned to the country yesterday after two days in Islamabad, Pakistan for the D-8 Summit.
The President, who left Abuja on Tuesday night, attended the opening session of the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the D8 on Thursday, being the outgoing chairman of the organisation.
Jonathan also handed over the chairmanship of the organisation to host President Azif Zardari who chaired the summit’s meeting.The summit deliberated on the theme “Democratic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity’’ and endorsed the D-8 Charter and the D-8 Global Vision.
Jonathan took over the leadership of the body in April 2010 when Nigeria hosted its 7th bi-annual summit. On the sidelines of the summit, the President held bilateral meetings with the leaders of some member countries and also met with the Nigerian communities in Pakistan.
The D-8 was established in 1997 in Istanbul, Turkey, to promote development cooperation among member countries. The members are Nigeria, Pakistan, Malaysia, Turkey, Egypt, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Iran.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday night left Abuja for Islamabad, Pakistan to participate in the summit of Heads of State and Government of the Group of Eight Developing Nations (D-8).
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Jonathan was seen off at the Presidential wing of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, around 11.57 p.m. by Ministers of FCT, Sen. Bala Muhammad and Mrs. Olajumoke Akinjide.
Others at the airport were the Minister of Police Affairs, retired Navy Capt. Caleb Olubolade, the Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mr. Edem Duke and the Inspector General of Police, Mohammad Abubakar, among other top government officials.
The president was accompanied on the trip by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Olugbenga Ashiru, Minister of Trade and Investment, Dr. Olusegun Aganga and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.
Besides participating in the summit of the D-8, Jonathan will also hold bilateral meetings in Islamabad with the Presidents of Pakistan, Malaysia, Turkey, Iran and Egypt whose countries also belong to the group.
The 2012 Islamabad Summit which coincided with the 15 years of existence of the group is expected to enhance member-countries’ share in global trade by 15 per cent by 2018.
The D-8 countries’ share in global trade was reported to have increased from 67 billion dollars in 2008 to 137 billion dollars in 2011.
Other Heads of State and Government expected at the Islamabad Summit, which opens on Wednesday, are Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, Susilo Yudhoyomo of Indonesia, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran and Prime Minister Recep Erdogan of Turkey.
Malaysia is expected to be represented by its Deputy Prime Minister and Bangladesh by its foreign affairs minister.
The D-8 group was established in 1997 to foster developmental cooperation among member-countries which are Nigeria, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan, Malaysia, Turkey, Iran and Egypt.
