  • Nigeria’s Ghetto Award to celebrate hidden talents at Ajegunle

Blackwaves Promotion Nigeria Limited, an entertainment and show-biz outfit, would be celebrating some identified hidden talents during its maiden edition on May 11, 2019.

The programme tagged: Nigeria Ghetto Award (NGA) is slated to hold at the National Arts Theatre, Iganmu.

The chief patron of Blackwaves Promotion, Ralph Agbogu, said this on Thursday at a news conference in Lagos.

He said that the award would be used to recognize people who had weathered the ugly circumstances, stigma and all odds associated with being born and raised in the ghettos to become achievers and pacesetters in their chosen fields.

He said, “Our mandate is to discover and showcase hidden talents in every area of the country to the world.

“Our focus will mainly be on the ghettos and rural communities where talents abound.”

Agbogu said that the selection of Ajegunle as the focus of the event was deliberate because of its symbolic nature.

“There is no other place that will have served our objective better than Ajegunle, which to us, represents a ghetto city.

“Ajegunle by our estimation is the number one ghetto in the country, being a suburb of Nigeria’s centre of excellence.

“Ghettos are like furnaces that bring out the best in metals,” Agbogu said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that awards would  be given to individuals who had made positive impacts in  music, arts and movies, football, banking, journalism and other professions.

The main ceremony would be preceded by a mini exhibition where budding artistes, companies and sponsors would showcase their products and services.

Agbogu also said that on May 4, 2019, a week before the award, there would be a ”Ghetto Walkout” when stakeholders and supporters would trek from the National Arts Theatre, Iganmu to the National Stadium in Surulere.

“The essence of this is to keep fit and create more awareness on the forthcoming award.

“We will also ensure that all participants are safe in order to have a hitch-free exercise,” he said.

NAN also reports that renowned reggae musician, Daddy Showkey, described as `the father of Ghetto celebrities’ is the ambassador of NGA.

  • God will not forgive you, Daddy Showkey tells Mamuzee Twins

Galala exponent, John Asiemo, popularly known as Daddy Showkey is not quick to air his view on sensitive matters, but when he does, he doesnt mince words.

In a no-holds-barred clip posted on instagram, the singer took two of his industry colleagues, Anthonio Akpos Dixon and Andre Andos Dixon, better known as Mamuzee Twins to the cleaners for allegedly abandoning their mother during her time of illness only for them to turn around and start celebrating her after her demise.

According to Showkey, the best person on whose face to put a smile on is one’s mum.

“This message is for two idiots,” he said.

“I called them and told them their mum was in comma, that they should call their mum, or go and see their mom. They refused. Today, they are putting their mum on Instagram for people to be giving them condolence. God will not forgive you.”

Showkey also had strong words for preachers who accuse their members’ mothers of being witches. In his opinion, they should mind their business and expect the wrath of God.

“Make una go. If my mama na winch, wetin concern all una. Na God go judge all of una. And that two idiots dem, God no go forgive una, for wetin una do una mama.”

Mamuzee Twins lost their mother recently and Andre had taken to his Instagram page to pay her a tribute

He wrote; “Romans 6: 5. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: It please’s God to call my Mom, yesterday back unto His glory! Adieu Mommy……Rest in perfect peace in the bossom of Lord.”

  • Daddy Showkey seeks support for vocational training

GOtv Ambassador and veteran singer, Daddy Showkey, has underscored the need for vocational skills training of pupils.

He spoke at the graduation of Rybeka Model College, Ajegunle, Lagos.

“I always advise people that there is nothing greater than making a child develop a skill. I could remember that in my time, I used to represent my school in debate competitions and those things have impacted me today.

“Vocational skills promote entrepreneurship. I am strongly advocating that government should reintroduce vocational studies into the school curriculum. The reason most people  are waiting for the government to provide jobs is because of lack of vocational training. Vocational schools will make our teeming youth population self-dependent,’’ he said.

The musician rewarded four pupils with GOtv decoders for their outstanding academic performances. Showkey, who was born and raised in Ajegunle, said it was necessary for him to give back to his society and encourage the pupils so that they could achieve their aspirations irrespective of where they come from.

Presenting the gifts, he noted that it was an educative tool that provides learning platforms to expand their horizon of knowledge.

Feeling excited that he had visited his neighbourhood, he said: “This is my root. I have come to enjoy myself with the children. For many years, I haven’t attended any graduation, so I decided to come and celebrate with them.”

He thrilled the pupils and their parents with his songs.

Best overall graduand, Goodness Egbuline, said she was happy the musician honoured the school’s invitation to the graduation.

“I am happy he came to my school.  I have not met him before but seeing him today makes me happy,” she said.

The school’s Director of Studies, Charles Oyeka, said Daddy Showkey was an inspiration to the pupils.

“It is our goal to develop the child mentally, physically, emotionally and socially. The school places emphasis on arts and culture. It is not everyone that will be a lawyer, doctor or engineer. Daddy Showkey’s humble beginning, life toils and success, which he shared with our students, show that any child, who is ambitious and backs it with action, will excel in life,” he said.

  • DADDY SHOWKEY Fame does not control me

DADDY SHOWKEY Fame does not control me

John Asiemo, popularly known as Daddy Showkey, hails from Delta State. He told Omolara Akintoye that he wanted to be a soldier initially. Even though he was not discouraged from being a soldier, his passion for music took over.

THE new crop of musicians are taking the centre stage, does your kind of music compete with them? I will not say anything because music has time. No matter the aspect of music you play, music has no generation, and some children are born to become musicians. So there is no need for comparison. For me, my name is Showkey.  I am a key to the show; for me, we all are alive, let’s see what God has for every one of us.

As a veteran reggae and hip hop star, which one does the youth prefer?

The youths are accepting what we have been campaigning from the word go; that they should listen to our music. So, if today the youths are listening to our music, neither reggae nor hip hop, they are listening to our language which is Pidgin English. That is what we have been telling them from the word go. Though they have been used to foreign music, today every part of the world our music is being played. We are in the jet age. During our time, we used to take our music by hand to everywhere, but today through the internet, you can send your music everywhere. So, for me, the youths are listening to our music and that is what we have been campaigning for. Not reggae and hip hop.

The youths you left behind in AJ city before you relocated, are they living up to your expectation?

I had left Ajegunle before I released my maiden album titled, Daddy Showkey welcome. People don’t know why I talk about Ajegunle was because of the experience I had in Ajegunle, not that Ajegunle is better than any community or better than anybody’s neigbourhood. When we were growing up in Ajegunle, if you go anywhere, they would tag you as a hoodlum, or an armed robber. So I decided to fight the image or that negative impression that people have about people living in Ajegunle. I lived in Apapa before I relocated here and I have been living here for more than two decades. So it is not about me living in Ajegunle. Ajegunle is my alma mater; I was born and brought up in Ajegunle. Would I continue to live where I was brought up, every day of my life?

Your fans are saying that you have abandoned the music industry and engaged in other projects

How can they say that? May be they don’t watch television. Towards the end of last year, I performed in an event. So, if I had abandoned music would I have performed at the Headies? I performed at the Headies and I have been doing a lot of shows. I have been performing across the country.

You have not released any new song lately?

I have a new song titled, One Day. They play it on air and I am about to shoot the video. So, I don’t know where they got the information that I have abandoned music for other projects. Anybody can decide to take a break. I had an accident that affected my spinal cord. So if anybody asked me about my music, I always get annoyed because my life is more important than anything else. So if I had an accident that affected my spinal cord, would you expect me to be playing music?

Are you saying that, you don’t have a project that has taken you away from paying attention to your career?

Everybody has the right to do what he or she likes. As a human being, we are expected to do anything we desire to do in life. So, if I am doing any other thing, that is my business. I don’t like disclosing my private project.

Is One Day the only song you released?

I also released AsalamMabis last year, and for this year, I have something in the pipeline. I will not disclose it to the public until I am done with it. My full album is also in the pipeline.

If you had not gone into music, what else would you have done in life?

Uhmm… that is a very big one. Entertainment has been in me since my childhood. So I still feel that I am in the right place in terms of my career. I have been entertaining people with music when I was about six or seven years old. So, if I am still playing music till now, I don’t think I would have any other thing that would interest me than music. On the other hand, I would have loved to further my education and complete it.

What would you want to study in school?

I would have studied Theatre Arts. I would study something that would enhance my career.

But you went to do short term course in the army. Why were you discouraged?

I was not discouraged. I used to be a boxer. And as a sportsman, a lot of options will come. At that time, I desired to do something for my country then. I believed that being a force man, you are ready to serve your country. Then I wanted to be a soldier. What I had always thought of from my childhood was music and that has been my dream. And there is nothing in life that is greater than entertainment.

Can we trace this talent to your lineage?

I would not say it is hereditary, though my father used to be a show promoter. He used to be an entertainment person. My father owns a promotional outfit called Parlance International Promotion in those days. But he was not a musician; instead, what he did was to discover musicians and promote them. But I discovered that it is a talent given to me by God. My parents have not told me that one of the ancestors in my family was a musician.

The Diana song was a mega hit, what inspired the song?

Before Diana, I did Somebody call my name, Fire Fire and Somebody tunlese, so it depends on the generation of people that existed at the time the song was released. All these songs were great hit. Daina was an inspirational song; that was the only thing that made it different from others. Daina was about a woman that has been married for many years without any offspring. It was a true life story. If I have another opportunity, I will do that song again, because the song uplifted women that found themselves in Daina’s situation. If you don’t have a child, people will give you names; that you are a witch, barren and most times the pressure usually comes from the husband’s family. But these people forget that man is not God. In a marriage, it depends on what you want in a marriage. Do you love your wife or you want her to be a baby machine? I feel that God gives children.

We learnt that you are a shy person and you find it difficult talking to women, how did you win the love of your life?

(Laughter) I will not comment on how I met her. I am a very shy person. I hardly go to events, because if I am at an event I will be shy. But once my microphone is in my hands on stage, I am no longer shy. Because of shyness, I could remember in my school days, my friends would tell me, ‘John, go on stage and sing before you start getting shy,’ and that was how I built up the courage to face a crowd. Besides, while I am driving and people look at me I am always shy.

    What has fame cost you?

I have always distinguished my life between John and Showkey, but outside my environment I am not Showkey, I am just myself. That is why I am more comfortable within my environment. I walk freely within my environment. I can drive to Ajegunle to mingle with my friends. The most important thing is to control fame; fame does not control me because I am the one who struggled to achieve the fame. So it is what you ask your money to do that is what your money will do and not your money controlling you. So I am the one controlling fame, and I don’t want to show that I am a super star. Without people, I cannot own a car, buy cloth to wear or feed myself; so my fans are the ones that have the fame and not Daddy Showkey.

Daddy Showkey thrills at GOtv Hood to Hood finale

IT was a night of captivating performances as veteran Nigerian music star, Daddy Showkey thrilled fans to his genre of music at the Legacy Pitch, National Stadium during the finale of the second edition of GOtv Hood to Hood Championship.

The Galala crooner threw the stadium audience into frenzy, taking fans back in time, to the admiration of spectators who gathered to cheer their teams to victory. The Ghetto Soldier, as he is fondly called by his fans, and who recently released a track titled Asalamabeez in which he featured Harrysong, brought the stadium alive the moment he took to the stage for his performance.

Meanwhile, one of the hottest music stars in the Nigerian entertainment scene at the moment, Oritsefemi Majemite Ekele (Oritsefemi) was the guest artiste at the opening ceremony of the competition held penultimate Saturday at the NIS Pitch, National Stadium.

Oritsefemi who appeared at the event in his branded GOtv T-Shirt excited guests and fans at the event with his popular hit track, Double Wahala which he dedicated to the memory of the late Afrobeat king, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

  • Fans fault Daddy Showkey’s Asalamabeez

    Fans fault Daddy Showkey’s Asalamabeez

There was excitement earlier in the year when news broke that Galala exponent, John Asiemo, aka Daddy Showkey, would be returning to the music scene. For those who had missed his genre of music, this was a sign of good things to come and, indeed, a return to the good ‘old days’ of mature music.

True to prediction, when Daddy Showkey dropped the single, Showkey Show, it was greeted with mixed feelings. While some rejoiced at the return of the Diana crooner, others kept their fingers crossed, waiting for him to finish what he started.

Interestingly, the dreadlock-wearing artiste, last week, made good his words when he followed it up with a new single titled Asalamabeez. The song, featuring Five Star Music artiste, Harrysong, is produced by Chimbalin.

However, while Showkey Show is packed with his familiar brand and style, the same cannot be said of Asalamabeez. Perhaps, in a bid to show off himself as versatile, the artiste is, however, about to miss the point. For some reasons, that  Daddy Showkey’svoice, one of the factors that has sold him ahead of the other members of his former music group, Sexy Pretty Boys, is absent in the track. This is aside the fact that the track lacks any definite theme.

Anyone who has followed his brand of music and dance step will agree that Galala does not quite flow with the tempo of the new track, Asalamabeez.

Against this backdrop, the feeling among music critics is that there is only one way for the artiste to go: to flow with the trend and relinquish his claim to the Galala genre.

“Daddy Showkey can do better than this. This is not the Daddy Showkey we used to listen to. Let’s keep our fingers crossed as we anticipate the album,” an anonymous fan wrote.

Another fan, who goes by the alias, Billionaire, also wrote: “This was not what I was expecting. Showkey Show was ‘kool’. But something is off about this. Showkey, please, improve on your lyrics.”
