Warri crisis: Dafinone calls for calm, urges dialogue, justice

Senator Ede Dafinone (Delta Central) has called for calm and peaceful resolution of the renewed crisis between the Urhobo and Itsekiri communities in Warri South Local Government Area.

In a statement on Tuesday, Dafinone said he received reports of the fresh hostilities “with deep concern,” stressing the need for restraint. At this critical time, I appeal to all parties to exercise restraint and shun any acts of violence,” he said. He urged the Federal Government and security agencies to “act swiftly in de-escalating the situation and ensuring the safety of all communities.”

The lawmaker emphasised the historical bond between both groups.

“The Urhobos and our Itsekiri neighbours have coexisted as brothers for decades, sharing cultural, social, and economic ties that must not be destroyed by avoidable conflicts. I appeal to both sides to embrace dialogue and peace, as peace remains priceless and irreplaceable,” he stated.

Dafinone condemned reports of an attack on the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) House at Okere-Urhobo, which left some youths injured.

“Such acts are deeply regrettable, as the UPU represents the heritage and identity of the Urhobo people worldwide. An attack on the UPU is, by extension, an attack on the entire Urhobo Nation. I urge the authorities to investigate these incidents thoroughly and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice,” he declared.

He further cautioned security agencies to act with fairness. “In maintaining peace and security, it is important that security agencies remain neutral, fair, and proactive in order to prevent escalation. The Urhobos of Warri, like all citizens, deserve protection from the Nigerian state,” Dafinone said, while stressing that reconciliation and dialogue must remain central to conflict resolution.

The statement reads: “As Senator representing the good people of Delta Central Senatorial District, I received with deep concern the reports of fresh crisis between the Itsekiris and Urhobos in Warri South Local Government Area. At this critical time, I appeal to all parties to exercise restraint and shun any acts of violence. I further call on the Federal Government and relevant security agencies to act swiftly in de-escalating the situation and ensuring the safety of all communities.

“The Urhobos and our Itsekiri neighbours have coexisted as brothers for decades, sharing cultural, social, and economic ties that must not be destroyed by avoidable conflicts. I appeal to both sides to embrace dialogue and peace, as peace remains priceless and irreplaceable. Violence can only bring pain, destruction, and setbacks to our communities.

“I am particularly troubled by reports of attacks on the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) House at Okere-Urhobo, which also resulted in injuries to some Urhobo youths. Such acts are deeply regrettable, as the UPU represents the heritage and identity of the Urhobo people worldwide. An attack on the UPU is, by extension, an attack on the entire Urhobo Nation. I urge the authorities to investigate these incidents thoroughly and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

“Finally, I call on all stakeholders; traditional leaders, community elders, youth groups, and political actors, to join hands in fostering unity, peace, and mutual respect. It is equally important that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) concludes the Supreme Court-ordered delineation exercise in Warri Federal Constituency, as this will help address longstanding grievances and lay a stronger foundation for peaceful coexistence. Together, we can sustain the bonds of brotherhood and build a future anchored on justice and harmony.”

Dafinone condemns brutal assault on Corps member in Anambra, demands Justice, compensation

Senator Ede Dafinone (Delta Central) has condemned the brutal assault on a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Miss Edema Jennifer Elohor, in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, describing it as “inhuman, barbaric, and an affront to national unity.”

In a strongly worded statement on Wednesday, Dafinone demanded that members of the Operation Udo Ga-Achi, also known as the Agunechemba Vigilante Group, who carried out the attack should not only be arrested, but should be prosecuted by the police.

He said failure to hold them accountable would embolden further abuse of citizens’ rights under the guise of community security.

A viral video circulating online showed the vigilante group storming the corps members’ lodge and assaulting them despite the production of valid NYSC identification cards. Miss Elohor was reportedly beaten, stripped naked, left bleeding, and subjected to humiliating and sexually degrading threats.

“No Nigerian citizen, much less a young lady serving her fatherland, should ever be subjected to such dehumanising treatment,” Dafinone said, stressing that the incident highlights the urgent need to regulate the activities of untrained and unprofessional armed vigilante groups.

The lawmaker also called on the Anambra State Government to take full responsibility for the incident by providing adequate compensation to Miss Elohor for the physical, psychological, and emotional trauma she suffered.

The statement reads in parts: “I, Senator Ede Dafinone, representing Delta Central Senatorial District, condemn in the strongest possible terms the inhuman and barbaric assault on a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Miss Edema Jennifer Elohor, in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

“The cruel actions perpetrated by armed operatives of Operation Udo Ga-Achi, otherwise known as the Agunechemba Vigilante Group, were not only a grave violation of her dignity and rights but also an affront to the ideals of national service and unity.

“This barbarity is an indictment on the Agunechemba Vigilante Group. It underscores the urgent need to regulate the activities of untrained and unprofessional armed vigilante groups who now weaponise violence against law-abiding citizens.

“I demand that those who carried out this heinous assault be identified, arrested, and prosecuted by the Police authority to serve as a deterrent to others. Anything less will embolden further abuse of citizens’ rights under the guise of community security.

“I call on the Anambra State Government to take full responsibility by offering immediate and adequate compensation to Miss Edema Elohor Jennifer for the physical, psychological, and emotional trauma she has suffered. This is the least obligation owed to her after such a harrowing ordeal. The state must act to restore her dignity and send a clear message that such lawlessness will not be tolerated.

“Equally, I urge the leadership of the NYSC to ensure the safety and protection of corps members serving across Anambra State until the completion of their service year. The trust of parents and guardians who release their children to serve this nation must not be betrayed by negligence or failure to guarantee their wellbeing. Our young people should never be exposed to brutality while wearing the national uniform of service.

“As representatives of the people, we must uphold the sanctity of human rights and protect the most vulnerable. The attack on Jennifer Elohor is a test of our collective resolve against impunity. Justice must be served swiftly, perpetrators punished, and reforms instituted to prevent a repeat of such shameful abuse in Nigeria.”

Dafinone to Urhobo Nation: let Us get our acts together, or be displaced

Senator Ede Dafinone (Delta Central) has called on the leadership of the Urhobo Nation to unite and “move as one, or be displaced” in the sociopolitical landscape of Delta State and Nigeria.

Speaking at the 2nd Edition of the UPU Ighelle World Conference with the theme: “Igniting the Urhobo Spirit: Urhobo Youth as custodians and catalysts of change,” Dafinone expressed frustration with a situation where “only one leader wants to be heard and seen.”

He delivered a stark warning, stating the change required for the Urhobo Nation is so profound that “unless we get our acts together now—today—I strongly believe we will be lost in the Nigerian equation, and even in the Delta equation, for good.”

Dafinone defended the right of the Urhobo people to benefit from the current political cycle, with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori at the helm. He invoked the “turn-by-turn” political ethos, famously articulated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Èmi l’ókàn” campaign slogan.

“I want to bring that home to us all here: we have an Urhobo governor, and it is our turn. There is no shame, and there is no sense of selfishness, in an Urhobo governor developing Urhobo land more than other sections of the state,” he declared.

The Senator highlighted his role as a bridge-builder and an “instrument of power” to open doors for his people at the federal level. He encouraged Urhobo youths and businesspeople to approach his office with well-prepared proposals, assuring them that he would use his access to help them succeed.

Dafinone also called for a change in mindset, particularly regarding unhealthy competition among leaders. He shared a personal anecdote about praying for a young mentee to become “richer than me,” explaining that a colleague’s success does not diminish his own.

“The unhealthy competition we often engage in—thinking I must be the richest, I must be the best, I must be the only leader—is defeating us,” he said. “We must move as one. We must move as Urhobo. We must move as a team.”

Dafinone closed with a personal story, recalling how he once prayed that a young man he mentored would surpass him financially.

“His being richer than me does not make me poorer. It takes nothing away from me,” he said, urging Urhobo leaders and youths to embrace a spirit of collective growth rather than rivalry.

CP Erivwode’s promotion pride to Urhobo Nation -Dafinone

SENATOR Ede Dafinone (Delta Central) has congratulated Mr. Victor Erivwode on his recent promotion to the rank of Commissioner of Police (CP) in the Nigeria Police Force, describing it as a “well-deserved elevation” and a source of immense pride for the Urhobo nation.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Senator lauded Erivwode’s rise through the ranks, attributing the achievement to his “unwavering dedication, professionalism, and exemplary service to the country.”

According to him:  “This significant promotion is a testament to CP Erivwode’s steadfast commitment to maintaining law and order, ensuring public safety, and upholding the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force. His track record speaks volumes.”

The lawmaker noted that Erivwode’s tenure as Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Rivers State had particularly showcased his leadership and investigative capacity, adding that he played a “crucial role in tackling complex criminal cases and fostering a safer environment for residents.”

He continued: “This promotion is not only a personal achievement for CP Erivwode but also a source of immense pride for the entire Urhobo nation. It serves as an inspiration to countless young individuals within our community. His rise is a shining example of meritocracy at its best.”

CP Erivwode’s promotion is seen by many within Delta and beyond as a well-earned recognition of service and a boost to the image of the Urhobo ethnic nationality within national institutions.

  • Creation of Ethiope State will correct historical imbalances, unlock new economic frontier — Dafinone

Creation of Ethiope State will correct historical imbalances, unlock new economic frontier — Dafinone

Senator Ede Dafinone (Delta Central) has declared that the creation of Ethiope State presents an opportunity to correct decades of historical imbalances, empower the Urhobo Nation, a major ethnic group, unlock a new frontier for economic and social development, enhance governance efficiency, and preserve cultural identity.

Speaking at the House of Representatives Committee on Constitutional Review’s public hearing at the Chief D.S. Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall, Government House, Yenagoa, on Saturday, Senator Dafinone, Vice Chairman of the Senate Committees on Local Content and Legislative Compliance, emphasised that the proposed state would rectify long-standing inequities faced by the Urhobo people—Nigeria’s fifth-largest ethnic nationality and the dominant group in Delta State.

The Delta Central lawmaker stated that the Urhobos have long faced structural exclusion within the nation’s current state configuration, despite their demographic significance and economic contributions. He stressed that the creation of Ethiope State would “redress this imbalance, ensure fairer resource allocation, and accelerate infrastructural development.”

The proposed Ethiope State, according to the Urhobo people’s submission, would encompass the two Urhobo kingdoms in Warri South Local Government Area, the Urhobo people in Patani Local Government Area, and all eight predominantly Urhobo Local Government Areas. This consolidation, Dafinone argued, would reflect the “demographic and administrative foundation for statehood” that the current structure fails to acknowledge.

Beyond correcting historical injustices, Senator Dafinone highlighted the immense economic potential of Ethiope State, adding that the Urhobo people inhabit some of the most productive oil fields in Nigeria. Yet, their communities remain underdeveloped and sidelined in resource management decisions.

“Urhoboland is a major oil-producing region, yet the people have limited influence over how these resources are managed or reinvested,” he lamented. “Ethiope State would enable greater control over local resources, catalyse economic growth, and promote responsible resource governance in line with the Petroleum Industry Act.”

He further detailed a robust economic foundation for the proposed state, citing “substantial oil and gas reserves,” “vast fertile land suitable for large-scale agriculture,” and “access to coastal areas and seaports, particularly Sapele and Warri, offering enormous potential for fisheries, aquaculture, and maritime trade.” The proposed state also boasts of “solid mineral endowment” and “extensive forest reserves with commercial quantities of timber.”

According to him: “Under the 1999 Constitution, proposals for State creation must meet certain criteria, including popular support, defined territory, economic viability, and legislative approval. Ethiope State clearly satisfies these thresholds, making it one of the most procedurally viable and legally sound proposals for state creation in contemporary Nigeria.

“Ethiope State would provide a more coherent administrative framework, rooted in shared values and identity. This would foster more effective service delivery, citizen engagement, and policy implementation tailored to local realities.

“With its state, the Urhobo people would gain the autonomy to chart their developmental priorities, implement localised policies, and take ownership of their governance. This self-determination would foster greater civic participation and accountability.

“Ethiope State would be better positioned to pursue focused and strategic development initiatives that reflect the needs of its people, from education and healthcare, agriculture and industrialisation.

“Statehood would formally acknowledge the Urhobo people’s contributions to the Nigerian Federation, enhance our political standing, deepen our sense of national belonging, and contribute to our overall unity and stability.”

Dafinone also pointed to existing infrastructure as a strong institutional foundation, including “Delta State University, Abraka; the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun; the Petroleum Training Institute, Effurun; Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara; Federal Polytechnic, Orogun; and the Delta State College of Physical Education, Mosogar,” alongside key industrial assets like “Delta Steel Company, Aladja, and Warri Refining & Petrochemicals Company Limited.”

Dafinone reiterated that the creation of Ethiope State is not just viable but “necessary” to correct a historical wrong, promote equity, and give the Urhobo people a rightful place in Nigeria’s federal structure. He described the proposal as “a call for fairness, efficiency, and inclusion—principles at the core of any functioning federation.”
