Pinnick, who explained how the 500,000 dollars from FIFA in preparation for the two friendly matches played in London was spent, said: “Three hundred thousand dollars ($300,000) was spent on accommondation, feeding, stadium rental, transport, general logistics for the two friendly matches booked in London.”

Clearing the air on when exactly will the foreign based players get their appreance fees for the match, he said: “I have a meeting with the Minister next week on the outstanding of the Super Eagles.”

Pinnick denied he received any money from CAF.

Each Super Eagles’ player is entitled to $2,000 as appearance fees.

Money was received from Guinness and N70 million from government’s allocation for February.

Akinremi drags NIS boss to Dalung over missing file

WORRIED about his missing official file, Francis Akinremi, suspended Ag Head of Department Sports Management Studies, National Institute for Sport (NIS), and has dragged the institute’s director, Chukwudi Eke before the Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung.

Dr Akinremi’s official file has been a subject of discord, even as the NIS boss confirmed it disappearance since 2015.

Eke said about the missing file: “I came on board to meet the issue of the missing file. This missing file has been ringing bell and no member of this management is happy about it. I have set up a committee on it since August 2015, headed by the Registrar and up till now, no report has been submitted.”

In a new bid to fish out his file, Akinremi has written an SOS (Save my Soul) letter to the Sports minister. According to him, “I have to do this because I fear that whatever they have done to my file can affect me in the future.”

In the letter dated March 20th 2017, and addressed to the Hon. Minister of Youth and Sports, Akinremi appealed to the high authority to investigate his missing file. “In the course of my stewardship as the chairman of the Academic Staff Union NIS branch, my official file ‘REF. NO NIS/P/203’ was missing…..as a mark of undue punishment and personal vendetta against my person.”

He called on Dalung to as a matter of urgency carry out ‘holistic’ investigation to address the lingering crisis in the institute as well as his suspension from all statutory committees and as Ag HOD of Sports Management Studies department.

When contacted, NIS registrar Adeneye Adeyemi said the committee is on the verge of summoning the former director and registrar to say what they know about the missing file.

  • AKWA IBOM FESTIVAL: Udom, Dalung vote for grassroots sports

AKWA IBOM FESTIVAL: Udom, Dalung vote for grassroots sports

The Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State Mr Udom Emmanuel and the Hon Minister of Youth and Sports Mr Solomon Dalung believe that the future of Nigerian sports lie in grassroots development.

Yesterday at the magnificent Godswill Akpabio International Stadium over 20,000 students were present to watch the commencement of the first ever Akwa Ibom State Youth Festival declared open by the Governor with the sports Minister as special guest of honour.

Governor Udom charged the  students to see the competition as a common spring board to fame and a brighter future, while the sports minister commended the Akwa Ibom State Government for leading other states of the federation in what will determine the future sports fame of the country. He said that it was only investment in the youth that will make him miss a top flight match in London involving the Super Eagles of Nigeria. The Minister promised to do everything in his power to help Akwa Ibom sustain ” this laudable and far reaching project”.

Governor Udom, in his speech, said that by exposing the students to the best sporting facilities at an early age, his administration was giving them wings to soar to greater heights.

This, he said gave rise to his establishment of sporting centres in each of the ten federal constituencies of the State, of which one has been completed in Itu and another nearing completion in Eket federal constituency.

He said his “administration sees sports development as a valuable gift to our children and youths,” and urged “participants to endeavour to make maximum use of this opportunity, and make it a visa to the land of stardom.”

The Governor, who called for more attention to the business side of sports, said sports in the today’s world was a goldmine and not mere entertainment.

“Beyond the story of this festival, our youths should be launched to the glory of the money-spinning venture of sports,” he asserted.

Governor Emmanuel who was accompanied by the State’s first lady, Mrs Martha Udom Emmanuel posited that the secret of world sports stars, “is hidden, first and foremost, in early exposure to world-class facilities particularly at an early age”.

He lamented the poor run of the country in the last Olympics and the nonparticipation of the national soccer team in the recent African Cup of Nations, and promised to raise stars to lead Nigeria back to glory ways in global sports.

Emmanuel thanked the Minister of Sports for his readiness to support the state in grassroot sport development, praying that “this( efforts) be a feeder to our national teams in the future and make us retake our rightful place in different sports”.

The opening ceremony featured invitation relay, march past of the participating teams, calisthenics display, oath taking ceremony and the lighting of the Festival torch by national and commonwealth sprints sensation Miss Aniekeme Alphonsus.

The week-long event featuring competitions in 20 sports at secondary and primary school levels will end on Sunday March 26.

  • Dalung urges Ambode to revive Stores

Dalung urges Ambode to revive Stores

The Minister of Youth and Sports Solomon Dalung on Wednesday made a passionate appeal to Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State to help revive Lagos-based Stationery Stores FC.

Dalung made the appeal after they had jointly inspected facilities at the National Stadium, Lagos purportedly abandoned about 11 years ago for possible concession to Lagos State Government.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Stationery Stores, founded in 1958 by then business mogul, Israel Adebajo, became dominant in the football circles in Nigeria between the 1980’s and 1990’s, providing the bulk of the national team players.

Notable among the players are Ike Shorunmu, Sam Opone, late Peter Fregene, Ganiyu Ajide, Abiodun Obafemi, Koya Dosunmu, Wasiu Adetoro and Hakeem Ogunlade among others.

The team won a total 13 Lagos State Challenge Cups and was four-time champions of FA Cup in 1967, 1968, 1982 and 1990. The team was the champions of the premier league in 1992.

Stationery Stores was also the runners-up of African Cup Winners Cup in 1981.

Trouble started for the club in 1992 when they were relegated for failing to complete their fixtures due to financial problems. It also faced some legal battles thereafter.

The team was unable to come back to life due to unresolved internal wrangling in the family.

Baring the importance of the club to football development in Lagos, Dalung called on Ambode to wade into the matters affecting the club in order to resuscitate it.

“I want to appeal to the Lagos State Government to resuscitate the club I so much loved when I was in Plateau State.

“I am a fan of the club and I have been trying to look out for the club. I have searched the internet also.

“When I arrived in Lagos yesterday, I was trying to see the semblance of the club because I want to associate with them.

“Whatever be the circumstances that may have led to the end of the club, I trust you with your large heart and your capacity to intervene.

“I want the crisis to be resolved and ensure that the team is resuscitated. The sentiments of that club to the national stadium cannot be wished away,’’ he said.

Responding, Ambode said that he was a fan of the club too, adding that he had watched some matches of the club sometimes ago.

“I am also a fan of Stationary Stores; I used to watch the team play against NEPA in the National Stadium. I was once thrown out of my seat during one of their matches,’’ he said.

Dalung tasks Super Falcons to retain AWC title

The Minister of Youth and Sports,Solomon Dalung has charged the Super Falcons to work assiduously to retain the title which they won two years ago when the 2016 Africa Women Cup of Nations begins in Cameroon this weekend.

The Minister, who accompanied the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo during their camping exercise in Abuja stressed the need for the team to stay united and fight for victory.

“Despite the numerous financial challenges being faced by the team, I am confident that these true Nigerian women will do the nation proud. We will keep routing for the team back home in Nigeria and pray for their success,” Dalung said.

The Super Falcons are due in Cameroon for the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations which kicks off this weekend.

  • Dalung, Pinnick, Ogba grace Skoolimpics final

It was an exciting final at the weekend when the curtain was finally drawn at the first edition of Heritage Bank – Lagos State Skoolimpics at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere.

The Minister for Youths and Sports, Solomon Dalung, led some other top dignitaries to the final among which was the president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, even though the  event was not a football competition.

The Athletic Federation of Nigeria, Solomon Ogba, was not left out likewise former Commissioner for Sports in Ogun State, Bukola Olopade.

The fun was unlimited as the children were treated to the best of entertainment within and outside the main bowl.

Apart from the normal finals in the boys and girls 100m and 400m, there were races involving staff of some of the branches of the bank while the entertainers presents were not left out of the race.

Top comedians like Ali Baba, Omo Baba, and others raced against each other with Super Sports presenter, Mosez Praiz, deciding to run with his back adding to the fun already exhibited by others.

Speaking during the final, the minister applauded the ingenuity of Heritage Bank for organising the event as he appealed to other corporate bodies to emulate the bank.

“This is what we are talking about, this is the way to go in order to develop sports in the country,” he said.

“Heritage Bank and their other partners have started it, let others join them to make sports great again in Nigeria.”

  • A word for Dalung

    A word for Dalung

Sports Minister Solomon Dalung apparently enjoys hearing his own voice which translates to doublespeak on matters concerning the industry. He is quick in reminding us that he isn’t a football minister, yet nothing good can come out of football, if he isn’t handling it. Dalung negotiates all football deals. If he doesn’t know about it, it won’t happen. He shunned church services on Sundays to beg President Muhammadu Buhari to release cash for the Super Eagles. This kind minister sef!

Would it, therefore, shock Dalung to hear that it cost the Table Tennis Federation less than $19,000 to prosecute the African Championships where Nigeria emerged champions in the women singles, winners of the male doubles event and runners-up in the men’s singles and mixed doubles? Nigeria was also runners-up in the male team event. Sir, Super Eagles are a distant 11th in Africa, in spite of your expert intervention and interest. Sir, $19,000 is less than what we paid four bench-warming Eagles players for beating Tanzania in a meaningless last game of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in Uyo.

It will interest Dalung to know that Nigeria star Aruna Quadri is number 25 in the world. Yet the minister’s cherished Eagles are 60th. Shouldn’t these facts challenge the minister to pay more attention to the game like he does to soccer? Or should I enumerate Segun Toriola’s table tennis exploits? Shortly before the Olympics, Oshonaike cried blue murder over the ministry’s neglect of the team. She was stampeded to do a retraction; she would have been dropped from participating at the Rio Olympic Games, if she didn’t. Nothing changed. Oshonaike repeated everything she said before the Olympics when she got to Morocco.

Stories of how other sporting federations don’t attend key competitions, including qualifiers for the Olympics, are legendary. But the minister couldn’t be bothered for as long as it isn’t football. Need I waste space to enumerate instances where Nigeria was absent from competitions because of lack of entry visas?

Is it not one of the duties of the ministry to sponsor teams which qualify for international competitions? At these world events, Nigeria’s flag is hoisted, her national anthem sung and the medals’ table has the country’s name, not that of the players. So sir, why can’t the ministry fund their trips? What did the minister do for the table tennis squad when the news came that only Funke Oshonaike was in Morocco to represent Nigeria in the female events? If we had our female players there, they would have finished runners-up in the singles and doubles events at the worst – that is if they don’t win some of the events, like Oshonaike did in the singles?

Why didn’t the minister forgo going to church on Sunday to appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari to release the cash the ping pongers needed to participate in the competition, like he did before Nigeria’s last game against Zambia in Ndola? We saw how the minister headed for Atlanta to pay the footballers their dues. We also saw how the minister personally supervised the payment of our contingent in Rio and only recently in Zambia. This wouldn’t be the first time that the table tennis contingent would attend competitions as orphans. They virtually paid their way to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The pair of Oshonaike and Segun Toriola wanted to address a press conference in Rio to announce their retirement from the game because of this and other reasons. But their federation president Enitan Oshodi prevailed on them not to retire but to help him nurture the younger ones he was introducing to the game. What a genius Oshodi has turned out to be, considering what Oshonaike achieved in Morocco last week by becoming the best female table tennis player in Africa at 42.

What is clear to us now is that Nigeria doesn’t have a sports calendar, where the minister can plan how funds should be disbursed to contingents heading for international competitions beyond what Dalung and his men read in the media on football. Indeed, it is the duty of the federation to organise tournaments to discover, nurture and expose those discovered to bigger competitions. If there is one federation that has made its mark in terms of organising competitions funded by the corporate world, it is the table tennis federation.

Dalung wouldn’t say that the table tennis federation’s chieftains have not done their beat like he does with football. He must therefore apologise to the players, their officials and the coaches for the humiliation that he has subjected them to since he became minister, like he did to the footballers in Rio.

Had Nigeria organised an Olympic Games’ fundraising event before the multisport event in Rio, there would still have been cash left for the table tennis contingent. Let me inform the minister that our players earned points which would help them to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games from the tournament in Morocco. This is the hallmark of sports- forward looking and highly dynamic. It has such terminologies like wild card meant for borderline players and achievers in the games. What it also means is that there would be a lot of competitions leading to bigger ones like the Olympics.

Now that the table tennis, basketball and boxing federations’ chieftains have shown that they can prosecute their programmes with corporate sponsorship, it behooves on the minister to make these three sports pivotal in our quest to excel at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. It should start today. After all, the three sports were at the Rio Olympics.

It isn’t enough for the minister to doff his hat for Oshodi. Rather, the minister should sit with him to see how past sponsors of the game can return, with assurances that their cash won’t be misappropriated, now that they have credible members.

We can use table tennis, basketball and boxing (the Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame project) for the pilot schemes to lure the corporate world to support sports. Subventions from the government to these three bodies could be increased. It could also include not sending cash to non-functional federations, which should kick their bumps to start their programmes.

    The Algerians are talking

The media are awash with quotes from the Algerians promising the Super Eagles a tough time in Uyo next Saturday. Such mind games help the fans to storm the stadium to watch the match. They have acknowledged the depth-in-strength of our stars just as they think we are beatable inside the Nest of Champions Stadium.

We aren’t expecting the Algerians to clap for us in Uyo. It is for this reason that we plead with our players to report to the team’s Abuja camp, so that the coaches would have more days to prepare them for the tie.

This idea of our players sneaking into Nigeria, only to report to camp two days to the game is unacceptable. They were granted permission to head straight to the camp, not their homes. Thank God the coaches have asked them to report in Abuja. Surprised? The players lied about connecting flights from Lagos to Uyo, which forced them to report late. I wonder what they would tell the coaches now. They could either fly straight to Abuja from Europe or to Lagos. The flights that take off to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) from Lagos are uncountable.

Again, we need to plead with our players not to fill the hotel rooms with their guests who distract them. They don’t accommodate guests in the hotels where their European clubs camp. Why do they exhibit such attitude here? Our players should be told that Nigeria’s flag must be hoisted in Russia in 2018. We have the players to help achieve that objective. Anyone who isn’t ready to play by the camp rules can excuse us.

Going for World Cup tournaments should be our birthright in Africa. It should be a stroll in the park, given our players’ exploits in Europe and the Diaspora.

    Ambode’s bull’s eye

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s decision to open the gates at the Teslim Balogun Stadium was a bull’s eye shot. It showed that the governor understood the essence of such a cup final.

Large turnout of spectators at the stands helps the corporate world to identify their products and services with such human activities. The bill boards and the inner perimeters of the playing pitch should have advertorials that would further convince the big companies to advertise, knowing that for 90 minutes they would enjoy international attention in the media.

Corporate firms always ask what is in it for them if they splash their cash. I’m excited that one of the teams (IfeanyiUbah FC) would be wearing West Ham FC of England’s colours as enshrined in the deal struck by the two parties. I wish Nasarawa FC players could also be clad in a Nigerian firm’s shirt. It could have also formed a talking point for the neutrals at the stands in deciding which of the two teams to support.

May the better side win the trophy and represent us well at the continental level next year. Take a bow, Akinwunmi Ambode for the wisdom in throwing open the gates at the stadium. Globally, the country’s FA Cup games are the biggest and the oldest. The people cherish watching them because of their tendency for upsets. It is in the FA Cup that minnows shock the giants. And Nigeria’s FA Cup game between Nasarawa FC and IfeanyiUbah FC epitomises this.

Ambode’s decision should propel the NFF to pick good referees for the game and ensure that the television coverage is world class, such that viewers at home are shown the fans celebrating at the stands, not just focusing on the personalities at the State Box.

The NFF security committee members must ensure that the gates are locked once the stadium is full. Latecomers can be encouraged to head for the National Stadium, Surulere complex, which is opposite the Teslim Balogun Stadium to watch big screens inside the premises. Effort must be made to ensure that the gates are flung open with 20 minutes to the end of the game to avoid any stampede.

Thank God the two teams are not the traditional ones with immense followership. So, their fans won’t be fanatical. They also won’t cause any confusion when either of them loses the trophy at dusk today. It is a breath of fresh air having new teams in the finals. I hope that they give the fans the value for their money.

  • Dalung, Pinnick halt arrest of LMC boss

Dalung, Pinnick halt arrest of LMC boss

Security operatives at the Abuja International airport failed to arrest Chairman of the League Management Company of Nigeria (LMC), Shehu Dikko upon arrival from Zambia.

Dikko arrived with the Super Eagles on Sunday night into the waiting hands of about five security operatives who were armed with guns and handcuffs to whisk him away.

However, the combined effort of the Minister for Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung and the president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick stopped the plain clothes operatives from arresting Dikko.

Dalung was pushed to the wall by the operatives despite making it known to them that he is a serving minister, the operatives were still bent on arresting the LMC boss, which infuriated the minister.

An angry exchange between Dalung and the men sent to arrest Giwa led to one of the operatives firing shots into the air, when Pinnick and Dalung mobilised against them.

The failed attempt to arrest Dikko is reportedly related to the contempt of court charge against the LMC, when they refused to stop the league despite a court ruling in favour of expelled Giwa FC.

Siasia quits as U-23 coach, slams Dalung, NFF

SAMSON Siasia, who coached Nigeria’s men’s football team to a bronze medal at the Rio Olympics, is quitting the game in his country because of what he describes as “a disrespectful system”.
Siasia, the most decorated African football coach at the Olympics having also won a silver medal in Beijing in 2008, claims to have gone unpaid for five months by his employers – the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
He says he has quit football in Nigeria after “a turbulent and incredible campaign in Brazil.
“I have reached that point where I have to say I have had enough,” Siasia, whose contract expires at the end of the Olympics, told BBC Sport.
“I’ve gone several months without getting paid, years of being derided and disrespected by the sports authorities in Nigeria but I am done already.
“It’s sad that after all we went through to get to Brazil and end up winning a bronze medal, the players, coaching and backroom staff never received a ‘thank you’ in appreciation despite a turbulent time at the Olympics” Siasia added.
Before arriving in Rio, Nigeria’s ‘Dream Team VI’ were held up in Atlanta, USA, because of a problem with the payment for their flight, and they only landed in Brazil just hours before their opening 5-4 win over Japan.
Nigeria also had a troubled build-up to their quarter-final against Denmark after the players boycotted a training session in a dispute over pay.
Amid all the problems that blighted their campaign, the team showed courage under adversity to clinch the country’s only medal at the Rio games.
“First we had the minister deride us for camping in Atlanta and even denied our existence as a group before the flight problems,” recalled Siasia.
“Players had to embark on a strike to be heard, then the boys kept a good spirit to win an incredible medal, only to be publicly criticised for speaking to the Japanese surgeon who supported and rewarded the team for their brave spirit.

  • We settled the bills — Dalung

We settled the bills — Dalung

The attention of the Ministry of Youth and Sports has again been drawn to the news that Team Nigeria’s  Captain John Mikel Obi paid hotel bills accruing from the 8 unaccredited players and officials in Rio with the National U-23 team.

According to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Barrister Solomon Dalung, the chief coach of the team Samson Siasia in company of another official had come knocking on his door at about 4am Sao Paolo time.

” Siasia was in my room early this morning and said the hotel security had refused to allow the team leave the hotel due to unpaid hotel bills. I also lodged in the same hotel with the Permanent Secretary and other members of the National Assembly (NOC)who came to watch the match against Columbia.

I told him to add the bill to the Permanent Secretary’s bill so that he can clear it alongside other bills. The amount incurred by the excess officials and players is $4,600. When we checked out of the hotel, the money was added and the Permanent Secretary paid all outstanding bills. I am surprised to hear and read that Mikel Obi saved an embarrassing situation by paying the bills” Dalung stated.

The Minister also restated that 8 unofficially accredited persons have been following the team since they left Atlanta including 4 players and 4 officials. The organizers of the games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) are only responsible for 25 accredited players and officials including feeding, flights and accommodation. We have been carrying the rest along.

” In Manaus, we were forced to pay camp allowances to the extra 4 players making 29. As we speak now, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is the only federation that does not have a single board member on ground. Not even the Secretary-General is here.  So, it is really unfortunate that this is happening. We have paid all players and other athletes their first 11 days in camp and the payment of the rest of the days will commence today( Friday). We want to plead with the players to shelve all actions capable of distracting them from their upcoming game on Saturday against Denmark and channel all grievances through the appropriate route.

We remain committed to the welfare of all our athletes in camp as we look forward to giving them our  unhindered support” Dalung reassured.
