  • Ogun to impound heavy duty trucks damaging roads

The Ogun State government has threatened to impound trucks belonging to cement and steel firms carrying over 30 tonnes on state’s roads.

Last Friday, Governor Ibikunle Amosun bemoaned the damage heavy duty trucks did to state’s roads and the time and resources the state expended to fix them.

The governor warned that his administration will no longer condone such damage to state’s roads.

Speaking yesterday through the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Otunba Bimbo Ashiru, the government said roads that would normally last 15 years became deplorable within a year by trucks carrying tonnes of loads beyond strength of the roads.

Ashiru spoke at his Oke-Mosan Office in Abeokuta, the state capital, at a symbolic presentation of certificates to participants of Lafarge Africa’s two-day Geology and Mining capacity training.

Fifty participants benefited from the training in raw material exploration, safety operations, blasting operations, among others.

The commissioner blamed the deplorable condition of roads on heavy vehicles plying them, saying it was time they took responsibility for fixing them.

According to him, the same challenges are experienced in other states.

He said: “Everybody, including the governor, is complaining about the trucks. They must maintain that policy by not loading their trucks with more than 30 tonnes so that those roads can last.

“If you fix a road now, we should be looking at the next 10 to 15 years. But what we have seen that these roads are in bad condition. Roads fixed in less than one year are in bad and deplorable conditions.

“So, I beg these companies, especially the cement and steel industries, to look at how they can meet the policy. They must meet the policy. We are going out there and put it everywhere in Ogun State that any truck that is carrying more than 30 tonnes should be impounded and charged accordingly.”

Lafarge Africa’s Director of Communication, Public Affairs and Sustainable Development, Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, said the training was part of the company’s commitment to the United Nations sustainable development goals on climate, people and community.

The director said Lafarge would continue to maintain its corporate social responsibility (CSR), adding that it is committed to giving back to its host communities.

She assured the government that Lafarge Africa will continue to train more geologists.
