Large turn-out as Yobe holds LG elections amid security challenges

After several postponements, local government elections in Yobe State took place yesterday across the 17 local government areas of the state amid security challenges.

Turnout was unexpectedly high with Governor Ibrahim Gaidam who cast his vote in his village at the Bukarti Primary School Polling Unit amidst cheers from the crowd describing the turn-out as “impressive and encouraging.”

Our correspondent who monitored the elections in some villages of Damaturu, Tarmuwa, Bursari, Bade, Geidam and Yunusari observed that voting began as early as 8am.

The election was generally peaceful and the logistics fair.

There was, however, heavy security presence in all the polling booths as well as major streets in Damaturu with soldiers, police, civil defence corps and immigration officers on alert.

Shops and other businesses were closed while restriction on movement was imposed throughout the state from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Reports from other parts of the state also spoke of security build up to forestall any unforeseen circumstances.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state opted out of the election, citing security challenges and the state of emergency in the state.

However, the State Independent Electoral Commission decided to go ahead with it because the emergency rule excludes democratic structures in the state.

Gov. Gaidam after casting his vote expressed happiness that the day went without any reported case of violence in any part of the state.

He, however, told his detractors whom he described as ‘Abuja politicians’ to hide their faces in shame, adding that the successful election has rubbished the impression about insecurity in the Yobe State being created by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of 2015 general elections.

Some of the election observers who spoke to our correspondent commended the State Government and the State Electoral Commission for their courage to conduct the election.

Dr. Hanatu Binyat, Executive Chairman of Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission, noted YSIEC has demonstrated that SIECs are capable of holding elections at all levels in the country.

Mr. Femi Bafunsho, Chairman Justice and Equity for All, an NGO, who observed the conduct of the polls, said the turn out in most polling units was commendable.

The Chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission, Hajiya Hannatu Binyat, told NAN that reports received from across the state spoke of a peaceful conduct of the election and congratulated the people for a successful exercise.

Coordinator of NGOs monitoring the election in the state, Ali Abatcha noted that the election is a litmus test for people who believe that elections cannot be held in the state in 2015.

Member representing Geidam, Yunusari, Bursari Federal Constituency, Goni Bukar described the election as a triumph for democracy.

According to him, the successful conduct of the election is a testimony that peace has returned to the state and no political activity in the state can be subverted.

Ten parties participated in the polls.

Jonathan’s visit: Police beef up security in Damaturu

The Yobe Police Command said it had beefed up security in and around Damaturu ahead of the state visit by President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday.

The Commissioner of Police in Yobe, Alhaji Sanusi Rufa’i, told journalists in Damaturu on Wednesday that “teams of mobile policemen have been deployed to the state to reinforce the security on ground.

“We are determined and working towards a peaceful and hitch-free presidential visit to the state,’’ the News Agency of Nigeria quoted the police commissioner as saying to journalists.

He said the command had deployed its personnel to all the nooks and crannies of the state capital.

“Although we now enjoy relative peace, we will leave no stone unturned to provide adequate security for the presidential visit and the people.

“We have adequate manpower and logistics to ensure a peaceful visit. We implore the public to conduct their lawful businesses, remain law-abiding and cooperate with the security agencies.’’

In Damaturu, Jonathan is scheduled to inaugurate the state university, the dual carriageway ring road, 300 housing units and an ultra-modern hospital.

The Commissioner for Housing, Alhaji Ago Dala, said government constructed 1, 179 housing units from 2007 to date in compliance with the Millennium Development Goals’ target on housing.

“The houses were sold out to people on owner/occupier basis with 65 per cent subsidy. This means, beneficiaries are paying only 35 per cent of the cost price of the houses.

“The state housing programme was designed to shift from house renting to house ownership with little stress.

“As a matter of policy, Yobe Government offsets outstanding balance of houses for families of deceased persons,’’ he said.

  • Gunshots mar Sallah celebrations in Damaturu

Gunshots rang out in Damaturu, Yobe State, on Friday night dampening the joy of many residents of celebrating a peaceful Sallah. Panic soon swept across the town and residents quickly retired indoors, wondering whether the attack which the Police had said was likely on the day had started.

It was only yesterday that news spread that the gunshots were ‘friendly force firing’ (FFF), by security agents. But the Yobe State police commissioner, Mr. Patrick Egbuniwe, said his men told him they were attacked so they returned fire.

“Yes, I heard the gunshots yesterday (Friday). What my boys told me was that they were attacked so they had to return fire. This is what I was told but we thank God it did not last for long.

“I understand the fear this will create in the people because for so long, up to a month we have not heard any gunshot in Damaturu. But people should remain calm”, CP Egbuniwe said.

However, the fear and panic created by the gunshots forced many residents to stay indoors for much of yesterday in a town the Islamist sect, Boko Haram, has terrorised intermittently over the last one year.
